The following program is an.
Exclusive presentation of TV.
Georgia Public Television presents the Georgia High School Association 2000 football semifinals.
Funding for this program is provided in part by Georgia Natural Gas, Georgia's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, IBEW Local 613 and by South Trust Bank.
The 2000 semifinals from the Georgia Dome has reached its final chapter.
The five a semifinal championship between Parkview and West Side make it.
And good evening again once again, everybody, and welcome.
I'm Jim Janaki.
Joe, big day at the georgia dome.
Four games in the books.
This is the last one and this is a big one.
Parkview and west side Macon, two teams that have advanced to the big game under the big top.
And joining me now to talk about the big game is Rodney Walker from Sandy Creek.
And Rodney, it's it's been quite a day here and this is going to be a big football game.
Well, it is.
And, you know, it's kind of Cinderella coming here, three year old program.
And we'll know in a little while where they going to get to where the glass slipper home or not.
But they're playing a great football team in in Parkview, you know, probably is one of the better teams in the state in five eight.
So it ought to be a great football game.
And of course, the winner of tonight's football game between Parkview and West Side, Macon will take on the Harrison Hoyas next Saturday night right here on TV in the five eight championship game.
So that ought to be a good one next weekend.
Oh, I think it'll be a great football game.
And I think that, you know, Parkview is got a great balance attack.
I think West Side Rides and motion.
So I think we're going to see a great football game.
And then next week I think you'll see another great football game.
Parkview and West Side making to call it the two guys in the booth stakes.
SHAPIRO Ball back from 790 The Zone in Atlanta.
Gentlemen, we're excited about it.
Obviously, the five eight semifinal championship, we had a great one last night.
It stars Mitchell and Harrison.
And obviously tonight, as they were talking about the underdog stories West Side, make it.
Oh, baby, we had a doozy last night.
I think we're in for a humdinger tonight because as coach said, you've got a three year old program just like stars Mitchell was last night.
They've got a great coach in Robert Davis.
He's got three state titles and two national titles at you know, at Warner Robins.
They were able to get them over at West Side, Cecil Ball runs a great program at Parkview.
We're in for a beauty tonight.
Let's take a look at what Parkview does.
Season statistics, they go 13.
Oh, no, not bad.
1700 yards through the air, 16 passing touchdowns and they banging out on the ground, 2100 yards rushing and 22 rushing touchdowns.
They quarterback Beau, an outstanding baseball player as a catcher for the baseball team his first year as the starting quarterback at 99 carries 300 yards on the ground and six touchdowns averaging 3.2 yards a carry.
But he likes to throw the football, no question about it.
He does.
And you're going to see a balanced attack from Parkview.
Let's go now to Cecil Flo and see what he has in mind for his game plan.
Well, I think it will be like it has been, you know, for us in the past.
We've got to have a ball control offense.
Robert, got some real quick kids on defense and on his offense excuse me.
And we're going to have to try to keep the ball away from as much as we can, try to throw in a good balance of running pass and not try to be predictable and, you know, have to be thrown on third down, you know, where we can, you know, be in the flow of our game, take care of the ball.
Obviously we can have turnovers and things like that just will work in a game like this.
Defensively, it'll be a bend and not break and I know they're going to make some plays.
When you get this far, you make plays and honestly, I have to tell the kids and sell them on the fact that the team you play is going to make plays.
But you know, they try not to give them the big play, try to make them earn everything they get.
And if you do that, you know, if you make them play the whole field and you don't give them gifts and you know, you should be okay thanks coach.
And West Side of making the Seminoles are going to run a wing tonight.
They're going to be on 50 on defense.
Let's take a look at their stats and what they did this year sees it.
The statistics are ten and three on the year, but that's why they come in as an unranked member of the tournament, 300 yards passing through the air, four touchdowns.
They love running.
The football is that simple.
3000 yards on the ground, 29 rushing touchdowns.
They don't want to run the football.
They want to run the football state.
But they're not afraid of passing it back.
Tony Mathis, their quarterback, has gotten a little bit better.
Let's go right now to.
Watch Stuart Bo.
He carried 200 times this year, 1200 yards and 14 touchdowns.
That's the gentleman who's going to see the football.
And as he goes, so go west side, make it.
George Pressley, another thousand yard rushers, they got two guys in the backfield, press it, runs it on the outside ball and then they'll use Stuart basically to run it off, tackle it.
Let's see how Coach Robert Davis is going to use these guys tonight.
Well, we're basically a running football team.
We run the wing T and we do a good job of that running the ball.
And we do throw a lot of play action, pass off the wing and we've been trying to run the veer mixed in with the wing, make a good combination of Veer and the wing to our defense.
We run, we stop the run.
We've been flat like we've got to stop the run.
We do a pretty good job up front.
We've got two good linebackers that fill holes real well second day and we were fair and we're going to try to get slowed down a little bit.
Throwing the ball.
It's the best high school football players in the State Bowl, the five eight semifinal championship at the Dome, an unknown ranked West Side make it against a powerhouse in Parkfield has all the elements of a great Saturday night.
If you won the state title in 1997 and they're looking to make way for the second time in four years on the sideline this afternoon is that Rob Tribble?
Well, guys, West Sides kicking game is in a shambles right now.
Starting kicker Grant Trotter as a hip pointer he's going to be able to kick but his effectiveness is going to be definitely compromised.
As for their punter, he has a bad ankle.
Really, not in any situation you want to be in when you have to go up against Parkview.
Let's go back upstairs.
But those are the kind of variables that make it difficult to pull the upset.
But again, we've seen this throughout the day, throughout yesterday.
Whatever you may expect to happen, don't count on it.
This is the playoffs.
This is the semifinals, and it's the Georgia Dome on a Saturday night.
Steak SHAPIRO and vote back at the car.
It's the 580 semifinal championship.
Parkview and West Side make it come in action.
You're watching the Georgia High School Association Football Championships on TV.
Live at the Georgia Dome.
Steak SHAPIRO and Bo Bock from Atlanta's sports leaders Sports Talk 792 zone, the sports radio station here in Atlanta, Georgia, and both the park, the Panthers and the West Side make it Seminoles.
The final game of what has been a great two day ten game run of which people are here at the Dome, at the TV, have worked tirelessly and hopefully both get lucky like we did last night.
We got the best game of of Friday and stars Millen Harrington and we hope we get the same today but I think.
We're going to steak because you know Robert Davis is an excellent coach, as is Cecil Flow.
Both of these guys have been in big games before.
And as you see, Parkview taking the field right now, these look like two small college teams.
The way they take the field you love the way they their entrance.
And these two teams are ready to do battle tonight.
I think we're going to have a great game.
Well, West Side, Macon, Bo, not only the kicking game, but obviously having three losses on the year.
Granted, they were some of the great power teams in the state, Warner Robins, Brookwood and Northside.
But they, you know, talking to Coach Davis before the game, they said they wanted to peak in week 11.
That's what they was gearing everything toward.
Obviously, he's been here before.
He's won with Warner Robins, won state titles in both.
Three state titles and two national titles.
So he understands the process of getting, you know, to the end of the season and getting to the tournament and trying to be in a position where your team is playing at its best.
He feels like it's the best state play.
He feels they're undersized plays with a lot of heart, a lot of the things you heard about stars now.
But obviously, any time you go up against the tradition of what they're facing tonight, I mean, that's something that can be intimidating.
Well, you've got to get a break.
You've got to make your breaks and you've got to make a big play.
And they've got some big play running backs on this West Side squad who can really, you know, tote the pick.
Yeah.
2000 yard rushers.
A member of this club this year.
Both we talked about George Pressley the running back and we talk about Antoine Stuart Stuart runs more like a fullback he'll be off tackle look to pound it they'll look to use the speed of George Pressley outside and and get him some space and allow him to.
Maybe to make some big plays to great students.
By the way, stood a 4.0 1280 and Presley 3.8 and 1080.
And you know, I notice as we go through the program and looking at these kids, both of these schools have some excellent student athletes.
Kicking off West Side make it Parkview will return grant totter he of the hip pointer will kick off and there Patrick McCourty back for Parkview we're ready to go the five eight semifinal championship a chance to play in the state final against Harrington, who played a great game here.
Last night and play some football do a little.
More to kick here stake Parkfield.
Across the 30 in touchdown in the 36 yard line That's Joey Sturdivant.
He's one of their two way players and he gives a pretty good field position for Park for you to come out of the gate.
With their kicker unable to drive the ball.
They had to go with that.
MOORE To kick and try to get a little more high down, perhaps did not give them that.
Did about eight or nine, ten yard return.
Clint Simmons comes out of the quarterback.
Let's look at his offensive line at Spellman Armstrong 11 good Flemming and Sudduth they protecting Clint Salmons a lot of seniors up front Dawkins and Ogletree in the backfield we're underway here Salmons handoff straight ahead to Crosby 40 just outside the 40 yard line in the 41, Sean Dawkins hit on a play.
This is a multiple pro set offense that we're going to see from Park View tonight.
And they do a lot of things that are very well balanced.
Ball Club Tim Brady with the tackle for West Side.
And here's a defensive front Hudson Pope Davis and man defensive backs linebackers Kent Rouse Richardson Freeman Townsend Morgan Let's make sure we got that last guy out.
Second and six Simmons under center man in motion long running back They pitch outside throws it Dockers Dawkins across the 45 to the 47 It'll be a big run first down and the flag down on the play.
Well they had the cluster formation to the right stake in that the formation was strong to the right they came back to the left side with motion and that lead blocker got a great block, well out block on the linebacker, got.
A great blocked ball because as a whole it looks like and Parkview is going to move backwards on this one.
That's the guy that really used to pound the football.
Both Sean Dawkins, he's only a sophomore.
He's a he's a beauty.
John Dawkins, 511 to 15.
He's got a £300 bench press.
So four, six in the forties, 855 yards on the year.
Holding on the offense.
GRIFFIN Second down.
Look at those itty bitty defensive players for West Side, making some of them only go about five, 11, £170.
They relied on speed and quickness and cunning power.
Gentlemen, you see tonight to watch for his Jeff Francoeur, number 12.
He's one of the big play players in the state of Georgia.
A three touchdown game already in this tournament.
Second and 16 ball at the 37th play action back to pass looking.
Downfield the overtime kicked off great interception there west side making it in control picked up by number 26 Clint Kent defensive back.
Backup free safety And how about that for a big play early they put him in a second long ball and west side make it makes a play.
Great their leading wide receiver you see they start him out of the backfield and they they ran him on an out he tried to go to the up receiver and actually had three receivers over there and just picked the wrong one, the one that was in double coverage.
Tony Mathis, now junior quarterback, he can run it very nicely.
Good option quarterback as well out of this swinger formation.
Don't be surprised if West Side make it it doesn't throw him much comes out looking to throw the ball that's how they got back in the game last week take the handoff.
As we said, Mac is rolling right looking downfield.
He's got a man and it's incomplete on the side.
Look, looking for Marlon White, the sophomore.
But Baldwin, in talking to Coach Davis before the game, one of the things he was impressed by last night was the way Harrington, a running team, both came out throwing the football.
Well, Harrison, last night goes Coach Copley wanted to run it, wanted to throw the football early because he wanted to surprise him.
A great call here by Robert Davis.
And you can see Mathis, his arm just good.
Looks like he really can throw it.
Second and ten ball.
The 46 yard line west side making the early turnover and business handoff straight ahead Get about three Antoine Stewart the fullback 1031 to go We're in the first quarter of the five eight semifinal championship the opportunity to go to the championship game against Harrington.
Brant Brock is the offensive coordinator for West Side.
He played at Florida State and he's been around a long time.
He's a heck of an offensive coordinator.
David Bruce is the defensive coordinator.
Third and seven ball on the 43 yard line faking a pitch.
Try to run straight ahead in that part.
Beautiful to front is ferocious yeah they'll run him down.
They'll run the wink t, they'll run the veer, they'll throw the football.
They try to do a lot of things and a lot of different formations.
Seven Mackenzie and Willis Sutter Look at the penetration here.
That's what's going to be tough all night.
That's why Parkview is just killer.
They've got a lot of experience up front a lot of seniors, Masi and 30th, of course, the seniors, Chad Leathers, the junior, and Seth Mackenzie.
What a specimen.
As a sophomore.
They can get the running ball running game going and they can run some play action and be effective fourth.
And six shotgun for not and they're going to punt and remember they're worried about their kicking game tonight.
This one looks like it may be headed for the endzone it's end over end and it is indeed landing in the end zone.
So that's where Parkview will take over the touchback.
They'll come out to the 20 yard line.
Almost had a chance.
That was a fine punt for a Punto with a bad ankle.
Almost had a chance to down that inside the two just a little bit too long.
Well, it died right when it hit, but unfortunately hit right in the end zone.
So a opportunity wasted.
Not a good sign for Coach Davis's ball second play from scrimmage.
Essentially the third play from scrimmage, you get the big interception, you get the momentum changer.
You hope and do absolutely nothing with the football offensively.
So now, Parker, you're back in action first and ten at the 20 yard line, 918 to go.
Quarter number one.
Simmons hands off straight ahead.
That's Austin.
Ogletree gets about three.
Austin Ogletree just on that dove on the left side.
And he's also the leading tackler on this team.
Parkview has a lot of great athletes that go both ways.
Here it is right here.
Simple handoff to the left side.
And what they will try to do is wear down west side with their superior size.
Coach Davis does not believe in the two way player ball and he thinks it's an advantage for his club and has been throughout the season.
They only play guys one way and a guy like Frank Korver, such an outstanding athlete plays almost 60 plays a game that could be a factor in second and 624 yard line 840 to go They hand off on the outside there and get nothing grabbed Lester.
See how quick the West Side making the defense is?
They had about six or seven hats on that ball and they really can go sideline to sideline.
So so far ball undersized west side make it doing a good job up front controlling the line of scrimmage have already been benefited from a holding call and here taking care of business on first and second down against sub Brad Lester and Austin Ogletree Lester only a freshman both watch him tonight number 35 shotgun formation Clint Simmons spread the field here to four wide receivers to the right turnover third down and five Simmons.
Down field is cocked and this could go over a lot on the outside.
It's Frank Gore down the sideline and he is cut down at the 20 yard line.
And that is one of the great athletes in the state.
Quinn Kent makes the tackle.
But what we talk about, Jeffery Gore, he doesn't catch a lot of passes.
Look at that.
Play.
Unbelievable stay different cause you said one of the best athletes in the state.
He wears number 12 for Jeremy Meyers, who was on this squad when they won the state championship in 1997.
Here he is.
And just look how rangy is he looks just like Jeremy Meyers.
The Free Safety, the two year starter for Georgia Tech wanted to wear number 12 like he now has 12 interceptions that surpass Jeremy Meyers.
And you see what he does on the offensive side of the ball.
You were talking about him being a two way player.
Tough to keep an athlete like that off the field.
A huge play for Frank Gore on third and five there at the West Side, making 20 yard line, first attempt.
Savage way outside knocking.
Tucker has got daylight He's at the ten foot five and he has lost the football at the three yard line.
That's a first down.
It is knocked away by Dorian Freeman, the senior.
But again, great blocking on the outside and great speed by Sean Dawkins.
Well, I would like to know what Cecil Flo calls that formation.
You could call it Jumbo, you could call it tight.
He's got two tight ends.
And look, he pulls it.
He pulls the guard in.
He's got the tight end on one defender out there and a lot of speed there to save the touchdown.
Yeah, Dorian Freeman doing a great job stripping that football ball, but goes right out of bounds.
It's first and goal from the three part view knocking on the door Simmons he'll keep straight ahead He's in it looks like dunk.
Just stopped him Sure.
To the naked eye up here in the Georgia Dome.
It looked like he may have got in, but he is right on the one inch line ball as they just run salmons off tackle.
I may be crazy, but I think Parkview has got 12 men on the field.
It looks like on that line.
But looked at way on the play before and even now with the one coming out, I think that they've got 12 on the field.
But they got 12 players on the field, get a decent count.
Yep.
Wow.
Andrew Morgan jumps for West Side, make it.
They have 12 players in the field and they head on that big run.
When they got down to the three, they also had 12.
They got 12 players in the huddle right now.
Then ball foul encroachment on the defense half the distance of the goal repeater down.
They still have 12 on the field.
Second and goal 635 to go again flag down on the play let's see what the Collins.
I may be going crazy you know I counted it four times.
You know what?
I think you've been doing too many games over the years.
Encroachment on the defense half the distance, four the go.
42 down.
It's a double tight end formation and it looks like they got more guys in the line.
But 630 to go Parkview ready to punch it in literally on the half inside Salmons straight.
Ahead Touchdown Parkview.
Clinch Salmons straight ahead.
And Parkview using Jeremy French for their biggest weapon to bust down the sidelines to the third and five.
And then they use Prince Simmons to just bust it home.
Craig Johnson a kick.
Whiteside making west side make it may have to come out throwing now they don't want to play Parkview from behind They have to keep pace with these Panthers.
Well, they've only had one possession it was a three an out in this drive is covered 80 yards.
And it's good.
So Parkview takes the football and uses a huge catch by Frank Cooper.
And then Simmons just goes right over literally at the half inch yard line, getting great, blocking up front there from his offensive line.
Spellman just crunched in the nose tackle up front.
Good.
Simmons is an all star catch who played in the junior Georgia team in baseball.
He has signed a scholarship to go to the University of Georgia last year.
As a catch, he threw out 19 of 22 Steelers.
After a while, nobody would attempt against them, and the only way they can move or run is to fund them.
Move.
That's an amazing percentage, both for a catcher, 19 and 22, especially at the high school level.
Craig Johnson on kickoff to West Side.
Make it seven.
Nothing early 615 to go here.
Quarter number one, powerful Parkview undefeated on top.
George Pressley is back as the return man for West Side making light of the Georgia Dome.
The five, a semifinal stakes for Bro and Bo back on a Saturday evening in downtown Atlanta, finding out who's going to the state championship game at Parkview will kick off.
Across the ten to the 12.
And it's Dorian Freeman.
Defensive back out to the 23 yard line so west side make it really bo stay within themselves.
As I said talking to Coach Davis, certainly one of the things he said is it's going to be very difficult to run the football against Parkview.
I mean, upfront they bring back guys are experienced they're very physical part of you won their first two games this year, both by virtue of a no offensive touchdown.
Frank Corey had a big pick off and returned for a touchdown and they created another one as they've struggled offensively, defensively to be terrific on the outside, across the 25 and after the 30, Georgia's pressing it 35, 40, knocked out of bounds at a very close to being a late hit in the 42 yard line.
But they get it and George Pressley with some space and that's what we talked about Stuart the fullback and plus to the outside.
They're going to have to get to the corner.
And Presley is the guy who can do that.
He's five, seven, £180 and he runs a four or 540.
He looked even quicker than that.
He's he's very quick makes great cuts.
Looks a lot like Warrick Dunn the way he got around that end there first and 1043 yard line west side making a big first down run their five pressing the handoff the straight ahead seven yard hammer by Antoine Stewart the fullback and now some good work up front Cole Brantley and Chris Eason and Brad Lord on that offensive line.
Todd Stewart, the junior linebacker in on the hit.
Antoine Stewart, he's the bangers six feet, £200 and he ran for over 1200 yards this year.
Tony Mathis obviously pleased with the last couple of carries that goes for six yards, second and four.
But they're starting to move the football offensively.
It's a handoff.
The straight ahead to Stewart Stewart of the cross of 48 near the 47 looks like it's very close to a first down ball and a key time for West Side making a start moving the ball Wednesday.
You see these guys break the huddle.
You know, they just have the look of a well-coached football team.
They broke the huddle, rushed to the line of scrimmage and they look like they mean business.
You like to see a team that comes out of the huddle, crisp like that and ready to go.
Zeb McKenzie, we're on an attack again.
Hard to believe this kid is a sophomore, third and one.
This is Tony Mathis.
Look for Stewart here, maybe straight ahead of Mathis himself, who can really run the football.
Tony Mathis again, only a junior for two running backs, both thousand yard rushes, those Stewart and Pressley, they're seniors.
And for me to give a straight ahead a dove for Stewart and he is very close.
I do not think that he got it.
I don't think he did either.
That was a great tackle.
Tried to go over the top and he was met right in midair.
Well, but what do you do here?
Well, I think you've got a punt.
You try to pin the mistake.
Look at that penetration.
They're great sticks up front.
It's like Todd Stewart doing his own dove to meet Antoine Stewart.
They're going to measure seven nothing.
Parkview 429 to go first quarter of the five semifinal championship games here in Atlanta first down shows a we know.
Back to you the whole thing that what they've got to do sustain these drives and try to keep the ball away from that Parkview offense.
I think we've learned two things important here in this first quarter.
First thing is West Side, Macon's offensive line starting to show some of their stubbornness.
The second thing is that you need a better bifocals, my man.
I may be right first.
And ten from the 47, the handoff is impressive.
Touchdown, great hip in the backfield.
Justin Albritton the strong safety the senior coming up and making that hit They try to get to space outside doesn't happen.
They're going to have to run outside They can't run inside and they're going to have to stick with the game plan.
Well, but.
But they may be right right now for a little play action.
They've got to put the ball up some time.
But play action airborne second 11.
Is a coach, Jerry Stewart, the Parkview defensive coordinator.
He's been in the business about 30 years himself.
And that again, straight ahead.
Seven yards George Preston in six but now makes it more respectable on third down here clock continues to move Zeb Mackenzie Mackenzie.
I hate the thought of getting one of these names wrong and having some kid keep his tape and having to hear us get his pronunciation wrong.
I'm waiting for you to get one right.
You better watch yourself.
But third and six, big play early on here.
307 to go pass on the 43 yard line apart from the is going MATTHEWS under center two backs behind now in motion Preston.
They're going to throw looking downfield oh and somebody on the way hits Francoeur He's at the 35 to 30 He's down to the ten oh, man is this kid a player?
Tony Mathis knocks him out of bounds.
That's number 13 on the year for Franklin.
57 yards on the interception return for Jeff Green Could look at him drive on the ball read it.
All the way they go right at Jeremy Frank court I mean vote I understand he's a two way player maybe you want to test him, but that's the best player on the field and you've allowed him now to control the whole first quarter and put back Parkview in a position right now to really put West Side, make it.
Up against today.
He's a great athlete.
He also hits 402 in baseball last year.
Is that Gwinnett County home run record with 15?
The great golfer, great basketball player, even though he doesn't play for.
Park, won't play for Park to be in the starting lap.
This is one of the best athletes George has seen in a while.
Park Field calls it timeout by Jeff Francoeur.
And again, I talked to Coach Davis about it before the game.
One of the things he said is, you know, we can't we can't pull a Dion Sanders and throw away from Jeremy Franco.
We have to be ready to attack him and just make him with this.
Is they also move him around the field.
Well, Jeff right there just read that ball.
I mean.
He evaded them.
He baited Tony Mathis.
He laid off the receiver as if he was not in the play and saw him crank it and just made a drive on the ball and picked it off.
There's coach Robert Davis and Brant Brock.
In back of him is offensive coordinator.
The speed on Frank court just unbelievable.
And just.
You know in a game like this the expression is don't let this guy beat you.
And then Jeff Frankel two of the most impressive athlete on the field and so far that has not worked for Coach Davis.
Frank Court has been sensational.
First and goal at.
The six west side making.
Use of stop the.
Pitches outside Dawkins and he's down about the three John Dawkins in front of that offensive line Brad Fleming and Willie Sutter 235 to go but really tough spot for West Side Nathan.
West Side, naked runs a 50 defense deal zone.
They'll mean no blitz.
They'll do anything they have to do right now.
They just have to get in the gaps and get lower than par four.
You have to get the pads under them and and don't give them any quarter down here because you don't want to go down 14 nothing to this bunch.
Second and goal play action here would probably really work, especially if you look for a tight end.
Clint Simmons under center.
He takes the handoff low keeper gets down about the.
Half yard line and again running over that left side.
Brad Fleming, Greg Spellman, good penetration.
Derrick Davis, the junior with a hit on the play 149 to go with third and goal at the one tough with a guy like Simmons about how.
You want to root him out of here and just give the ball to a Sean Dawkins and try to power it in.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Sam and just keep it going.
Almost the same part of the field you were a few minutes ago, Clint.
Sam is a big, strong kid.
He's got six rushing touchdowns on the year seven, if you include today.
And he'll keep it and try to go over and they'll give it to him.
Touchdown, Parkview.
Clint Salmons taking.
Care of business.
Jeff Frank Corps doing the same.
Well, it's been Ole Frank for so far with the big catch and run and then the interception returns for 57 yards.
They get that initial surge.
Fleming and Spellman doing a great job Greg Johnson to come in for the extra point.
But talking about being up against it now for West Side make it bow down 14 nothing.
The Cinderella story as we get closer to midnight doesn't look like many glass slippers around the Georgia Dome right now.
14.
Nothing park to you.
Well, now it's time to pull out all the stops.
You got to start throwing the football.
Tony Mathis, as a as a very good looking arm.
Throws a good ball tight spiral.
You're only.
In the first.
Quarter.
Why?
You water yourself in a position where you start throwing the football all over the field.
Clearly, Jeff Frank cause it can terrorize you back there.
I mean, the one thing is you have a sustained drive and take up some time, even if you only get three out of it.
Let's take a look at this pick again because this is the key play of the game so far.
So Johnny Mathis drops back.
He's looking to his right side.
He telegraphs it.
He's looking right at his intended receiver, as you saw, Frank, gorgeous, laid off and laid back there.
And too far for the ball to be in the air for Frank, who had not to make a play on that ball.
Marlon White is who he was looking for.
The sophomore wideout and Frank Corps had a great sense, almost like they knew on film where they like to go in that third down situation with Frank, who was sitting right George Press play back Craig Johnson will kick from park view the Panthers an impressive looking bunch That's a great kick and they'll go into the end zone so.
And now a quote a semifinal flashback.
The state championship game was played at the big orange jungle where Parkview defeated the Blue Devils of Tipp County, 21 to 7 semifinal.
Colquitt County and Parkview.
Jeremy Meyers picked off four.
Reggie Stancil passes three in the end zone.
It was one of the best individual performances ever in the state playoffs.
If that wasn't enough, Meyers then caught a TD pass in overtime to give the Panthers a 14 seven win against the Packers.
Well, you talk about Jeremy Meyers, Beau.
Jeff Frank was writing his own flashback that we may be watching a few years from now, the night that he has had so far.
Well, we talked about Jeremy Meyers and he looks like him.
Same posture, dead ball, foul ball.
Start on the offense.
Down first, down.
Wiry, gangly, raw boned kid all over the field, making plays.
First and 15 west side make it tries to get something going now handoff to Pressley gets about five of it back towards Pressley showing a burst of speed thousand yards rushing for the season for west side Macon.
Got a.
Scoring drive with three plays that's what happens when you get it down to the six took a minute 22 to run off three.
Clint Simmons goes over from the one half yard line, his second touchdown of the day and it's 14.
Nothing is what we have to lead.
Straight ahead, Antoine Stewart out to the 28 yard line.
But I really don't think Coach Davis is going to feel comfortable throwing the football right now in this situation.
How you want to do is try to settle your kids down.
They're probably a little shellshocked right now at the way right out of the gate, they're down 14, nothing.
And, you know, the last thing they need is another turnover going the other way.
Yeah, you're probably right.
And especially down here in minus territory, you want to get it out of here so you can open up your playbook.
20 seconds left.
This could be the last play of the first quarter on a Saturday night, the five eight semifinal will take the hand of the road left looking downfield in trouble.
They off and they'll know it's not going to happen for Tony Mathis.
Not with a sophomore, Todd Brooks making a play.
And again, the passing game, not much there at Parkview Secondary is ferocious, one of the best defenses in the state of Georgia.
And that is really going to be the story.
It's a learning process.
Tony Mathis, only a junior.
And that time he made a good decision.
He wanted to go in the outcome to his left side, looked over there.
There was coverage there.
He pulled the ball down and tried to make what he could.
The first quarter is ended.
What started out promising for West Side, Macon has taken a turn.
Parkview looking to go to the state finals hook up with Harrington.
It's going well now 14 nothing.
We'll come back for a second quarter.
You're watching the Georgia High School Association Football Championships on TV.
Beautiful downtown Atlanta, Georgia.
On a Saturday evening in the fall.
It's been real beautiful for Parkview so far.
It's been a buggy ride for Fox.
This Christmas lights are out and a great time of year to be in downtown Atlanta, especially if you're lucky enough to be inside the Georgia Dome just a few blocks away from Centennial Park, where Coach Cecil Flo tries to make it a 14 and oh season, a third and four to go right here, fourth down, a fourth down.
And three, I should say, as as they will punt away, T.J. Hudson doing the punting.
I'm sorry.
And part of getting the football back in a short kick fair caught by Frank Cor at the 39 and the last thing you want to do is be kicking him.
Yeah.
Frank Gore, is there anything else he can do?
Maybe load up the bus tonight.
Parkview will try to get their running game going.
Now very undersized West Side making, you know a lot of what they do is on emotion and coming out down 14 nothing that has to throw him for a loop.
Certainly Clint Simmons under center here, two backs behind him.
He'll give him straight ahead to Dawkins and Dawkins pounds his way out across the 48 to the 49 yard line.
Charlie Richardson, the senior on the hit.
Just about a ten yard gain.
And look at the blocking on the right side.
They seal that side.
And I think that the west side was slanting to the right and they just had the right play call against a bad defensive call.
Tommy Levan, good doing a good job getting himself downfield.
And Parkview, the part of you offensive and defensive line Bill probably their greatest advantage it has been all season.
You know the 1997 state championship team just a few years away.
And they graduate a lot of guys from last year's team.
But where they brought the most back was on the offensive and defensive front.
And that has shown tonight and shown all season long.
Second and one salmons not a bad time to go play action and they do that sandwich looking downfield is Joe on the pressure he lets it go look for Frank caught.
Hold deflected away interference calling the secondary Clint can't have been involved in a.
Number of plays early ball.
Yeah he has and tried to make a play on that ball but you saw Frank Cooper was able to get behind him lots of time here for us.
Simmons to throw the football and he throws a nice ball and just just a little bit too early.
He got hit pretty good ball.
I mean, he got whacked as he threw it and he could not have thrown it any better.
I mean, in stride, Frank couldn't break it down field and in a desperate situation west side making with the interference call but very impressive combination really looked like one a athletes Clint sandwich and Jeff Frank caught and we got a penalty where are we going now take a call that offensive.
Hell and ineligible downfield on the offense yeah.
Defensive pass interference decline.
Replay the down.
Will do second and one again it looks like but the surprise of a fake handoff up the gut and going to frank caught deep has been lost.
That was a good call on second and one that was just battery made salmons the friend could.
Second and one.
Sam overall look downfield still on the pressure.
He gets out of it somehow and it he gets hammered and that's maybe the best athlete on the field.
Jeremy Tarleton, the senior linebacker, and he.
Delivers a whack and that's the key ball.
They said they wanted running after Jeff Frank here all night.
Let's look at the replay Simmons in big trouble here finds a way to get out of it and then all of a sudden, Tarleton delivers a major blow looking to hold onto the football.
His Salmons Barnes, their leading tackler with 115 tackles 18 for a loss.
He's got four sacks.
That's his fifth sack, these five, 11, £210.
And he's a senior linebacker.
He's tough.
Yeah.
He's Robert Davis's favorite tough player on defense in terms of athleticism and talking with him about talking before the game and he thinks talk to the guy that can run with Frank Gore and so far, that hasn't exactly happened.
Third and nine, though, part two it his second and one it's an eight yard loss Simmons out of the shotgun back to pass looking downfield and breaking free just for a moment Kirk Alexander the tight end the senior and he overthrows him and a big bullet dodged by west side making it.
Kirk Alexander's there a big tight end he's six 3 to 1 he's got 27 receptions this year but 12.3 yards per catch.
Greg Johnson will kick away Dorian Freeman the senior will return west side, make it trailing 14 nothing 953 to go the five a semifinal game here at the Georgia Dome on a Saturday night.
It's a bad snap.
They come after it and he gets it off.
Freeman takes a bounce at the 25, goes out of the 23 and that that bounce took a nice little Astroturf hop.
It sure did.
But I don't know how West Side missed that.
I thought they had four guys around.
I don't know how they either didn't get the football ball or they didn't have a roughing.
Let's take a look at the replay.
This right here, a bad snap from center.
Like a good third baseman.
He picks it up.
Oh, he just flew right by it and luckily it didn't catch his leg is amazing.
He was almost there too early.
Bono.
Yes, he was.
I mean, he went right past the football boy.
That hurts West Side make it.
It really hurts.
James Rouse.
Tony Mathis tries to get things going.
The handoff is on the outside there across the.
25 out to the 30 and touchdown here, Travis Evans.
Out to the 32 yard line.
Bo, he's a freshman.
How about Greenwood?
Well, you know, this is another one of those just three year old programs, just like Stars Middle.
Last night, coach Robert Davis has done a great job with these guys, only the third varsity season.
And here they are in the state semifinal playoffs.
This is the deepest pump make in public school has gone in the playoffs in 25 years.
Second and two ball in the 32 yard line.
The handoff is straight ahead.
Antoine Stewart and he has got the first down.
So if anything has right tonight, Bo, it's some of the surge they've gotten from the offensive line.
It's really amazing against that bigger Parkview squad, look how big they look.
I don't know if it's a white uniforms there.
We're looking at West Side Macon right there.
But, you know, they just look so much bigger on the field.
Antoine Stewart, 1200 yards this year, 5.3 yards per carry.
And he really churns and keeps those legs moving.
First and ten handoff again in the 40 to the 43 gain of about six yards on the play, 843 to go second quarter.
Too.
I'm talking about those white uniforms.
Think they look big, but also they look multiple.
In other words, they look like there's another man on the field.
Yeah.
Hey, I worked with a guy once.
Really?
Yeah.
Crazy mixed up guy who?
I was convinced for about three plays.
There was a in the the uniform.
That's got to be the uniform.
Bronco style uniform.
Or whatever.
You want to go with the get out of this one.
Go right ahead.
Second and four ball in the 43 yard line, 815 to go with the handoff is to press the press he tries to get outside here and is touchdown great speed great quickness you come here making that tackle Joey Sturdivant, a sophomore.
Just a great move to avoid the loss.
Watch this right here outside cuts it back inside, hits the seam, then makes another cut outside.
What a talented runner he is.
Never get it.
I never heard a guy get so much credit for a one yard run.
Over 1100 yards this year.
6.3 yards per carry throw.
George Best and they go with a quick snap and right at the line they pitch outside, try to get a first down and they have got it.
It looks like after the 48 yard line.
George Presley again.
BO It's pretty simple formula.
They're going outside, it's impressive.
They're going between the tackles most of times, going to be Antoine Stewart, Austin Ogletree with a hip.
Ogletree, remember, also carries the football for Parkfield first down West Side, make it 733 to go, Parkview Leading West Side, make it 14 nothing.
I'm Steak SHAPIRO with Bobak.
A sports talk, seven night of his own here in Atlanta, watching the five a semifinal matchup the winner plays in the state finals against Harrington Harrison Harrison he's going to Al Harrington I'm watching too much NBA.
Harrington was I think his character on Ally McBeal.
The caddy straight ahead for five yards.
Antoine Stewart.
It's real simple, but they're not going to get too creative right now.
They're going to run Stewart and they're going to run press about these guys, a thousand yard rushes.
They're going to try to get back in this football game.
Well, you know, based on their last series, I think Tony Mathis really started to see some things that he was not seeing earlier.
And, you know, you get kids in this dome seeing it for the first time, quarterbacking this squad.
You know, for the first time this year, Tony Mathis was a little too antsy, didn't take this time, wasn't patient, didn't read the defenses.
I think he might have learned something in this game is fumbles.
On the ground Mathis looks like he got it big break and it'll set up about a third and six.
Mathis and Stewart say, how do you do to each other?
The ball ends up on the carpet and they kind of set up a third and seven tough there ball when you're driving moving the football the way they were.
Right here was just a actually Antoine Stewart I think forgot the play ran a different play.
Tony Mathis bone now maybe putting himself in a position where he has to throw the football and has not had any success.
I don't believe he has a completion rate unless you got to consider the one he had to just break.
Court coach Cecil Flow, his defense run by Jerry so we run a43 they'll come with a blitz here it comes from the outside.
They pick it up very nicely.
Oh, he's got them out there.
But under throws.
Frank Court knocks it away.
Frank Cool.
Marlon Marlon White, the sophomore of the same combination there again.
I told you, he's not going to hesitate to go with Jeff Frank.
Court and straight man to man coverage.
They're deep both.
But you know, if you're going 30 yards downfield, you're giving Jeff Brant cause time with his speed to get all the way back there.
And, you know, it's almost a mirror of the flashback we just saw with Jeremy Meyers.
Both.
That's the kind of stuff Jeremy Meyers was doing in the Dome a few years ago when he was picking off passes in traffic and and catching balls.
And continues to do it for Georgia Tech.
Frank Caldwell returned.
T.J. Hudson the kick.
It's a short one.
Frank Cole fair catch at the 20.
I'd love to have seen him take off for that one just to watch him with the football in his hand.
We said in the third year of this program, Robert Davis loves coaching this club.
Oh, I am very proud football team.
You know, we're a young school.
We start from scratch, kind of like Kurt Russell did of George Southern.
And we have come so far and we have matured and football wise we've matured in age and everything.
But our kids are really they play hard.
The game's important to them.
I'm just really tickled with them being here.
He's one of the good ones.
Three National title, three state titles and two national titles at Warner Robins before coming over to West Side.
That's like Southern football coach one on one right there, casting call, great sound, right up the middle.
And it's a big one.
John Dawkins sees daylight and is cut.
Down at the 38 yard line.
So it's only a matter of time before Shaun Dawkins got off and he did right there.
And I think we're starting to see even this early in the game with 547 to go in the first half, that's still the dominance of the park.
You offensive line.
You see it right here.
Look at that hole and guys are still flying around after being blocked and Dawkins is able to take it for a bundle.
Brad Fleming and Greg Spellman, he can't say enough about Spellman, the center man.
He is crunching people right up front.
James Rouse had to run him down first and ten ball now with the west side making 37 yard line.
How about Shaun Dawkins?
Two carries for 60 yards beat right.
Here in motion there.
It looked like it indeed is a comeback chance for West Side making the last stick.
But this one is going to come back false start.
They were in a power formation with two tight.
You got some good material for the second half.
They're very worried about this.
This West Side Macon Club hasn't come this far by not having heart, guts, grit.
I'm not worried about their heart.
I'm just worried that we got a close game.
Shiloh, by the way, that led them last week, 24, 13 at the half, and they came back and exploded, throwing the football in that second half and a number of interceptions as.
Well and beat them 35 to 24.
And that's where Tony Mathis.
Motion on the offense five yards penalty fell first there.
It was that Shiloh game in the second half where they felt that Tony Mathis really came of age as a passer.
And again, I you know, west side make is certainly has a shot to stay in this football game.
But the reality is Parkview a different from Shiloh in terms of trying to get back in it first and 15 ball west side making 42 big drive here from Carr for you to try to really open up some space give us straight ahead is that Joey Sturdivant, the sophomore, second string tailback and Andrew Morgan, the junior cuts him down?
Yes.
Well, you see, they think they can run right at West Side Macon right now.
And the Seminoles are going to have to get in those gaps, though, maybe have to guess a little bit.
They're going to have to do some standing up there, some looping and try to get in the gaps and disrupt them in the backfield.
Second and 11 ball, the West Side, Macon, 39 yard line play off.
Clint Salmons already has run for two touchdowns from the one.
We'll see what they want to do here.
Go inside, pitch to the fullback and it's going to go for a bunch.
Straight ahead, Kirk Alexander, the tight end edge and say lining up by the tight end formation going to give that little pinch shuffle pass.
And a little shuffle pass.
It goes very popular play out of the process formation.
So well orchestrated and look at that crunching block up front there by Brad Fleming, the left guard.
I mean, you want to talk about a big time block.
You can't say enough about Park View's offensive front, really opening things up.
Bring it out and measure for this first.
Three out them chains.
Come on.
That's a first down for Parkfield for 13 to go.
They continue to march down the football field and this game ball really moving along at a rapid pace at some point.
West Side, Michigan, I think decided that running the ball was their best chance and they were doing great until that miscue or trying to hand off the football that killed their drive.
They're not going to work in the third and long ball, not against the secondary and not against Franco first and ten ball.
The 27 salmons under center one wide receiver right.
He's got a tight end in motion to hand off the straight ahead and again that's John Dawkins who is fighting his way down a great little run down about the 19 yard line getting about eight on the play.
Last couple of three carries, they're averaging now six, seven yards per carry on.
First down, you see right here with a block downfield.
I'm surprised that you both you're not mentioning his offensive linemen.
I thought you were all about the ball box blocks of granite.
You know.
And these.
Are you are you relying on me to acknowledge all the great talk.
To you?
As a matter of fact, is the recipient of the bowl block blocks again granted award when Jeff Francona was our prep player of the week for Waffle House just a couple of weeks ago.
Is that right?
Second and two ball in the 19 yard line.
He's gone down.
Go in motion.
Sam is now play action pass.
No look end zone he's got a man and it is knocked away looking for Jeff Frank court and again some great coverage there by Clint and two already has an interception on the day.
Sam has just threw two late steak he had Fran Cooper out there when he put it up finally he was able to recover and make a play on the ball at him early.
Well, it gives us air under the ball and a great play.
You know, Kent was pretty much there, but I don't know.
I mean, let's give some credit here.
He can't throw it early.
You throw it early and you drive the ball and you can make a play on it when you have to put the ball.
Not much air under it, you have a chance for the secondary to recover and make a play.
I think they'll just try it.
This is a two down territory ball and with that offensive line I expect them to go straight ahead here and try to pick up the first down.
Simmons now third down and two handoff is to Dawkins trying to get outside.
He does get the first down and a little bit more.
Taurean Freeman and Charlie Richardson making the hit and then I'll set up a first and ten at the 19 yard line.
Oh boy, there's slobber knocking down there.
And I'll tell you one thing that those field blocks are going to do is they sustain the block.
Yeah, great job.
And they block downfield.
You know, they they stay with it, like you said, and they get everybody blocking, including Francois Salmons.
Now first and ten of the 19 to 30 to go second quarter pass you rolling over west side make it so far handoff outside bang in his way Austin Ogletree the two way senior not much there.
That's the type of defense that David Bruce, the defensive coordinator for West Side is is familiar with, where you get a couple of three guys that you attacking the ball carrier and then the fourth man comes in and knocks them out.
Second and nine ball, the 18 yard line, great pressure there by West Side.
Make it look for Shawn Dawkins, Jeff Frank Cork and Clint Salmons.
At this point of the field, both those are the money guys for Parkview and they play a lot of guys.
But Frank Cooper wide right right now, Shawn Dawkins is the lone setback quarterback will keep and go forward about the 16 yard line playing at somewhat conservative 129 to go on the clock Glenn Stanton's gain of about three on the play Raymond Dagger they hit.
They get inside the red zone they like to keep the ball in Salmon's hands.
Third downs Salmon's a little banged up on that play.
Salmons, by the way, you know, he's just been a very capable passer.
He's got 16 TDs this year, only two interceptions.
Time out on the field.
Looks like Parkview wants to figure out what they want to do.
Well, let's go down to Jim.
All right.
Thanks, guys.
single-A semifinal earlier today, Commerce and Lincoln County, Montel Williams, a big day.
Two touchdown run scored on a two point conversion have and also blocked a punt He'll play in the single-A championship game next Friday night at commerce and they'll take on the Buford Wolves there's your final coming up here.
Tigers 17, Red Devils 14 back you guys the boot.
That was a fun one early.
Yeah.
70 teams in close games all day to day and.
Coach Cecil Flow He'd love to punch another one in with only 106 remaining in the first half.
Neal Hour, the offensive coordinator for Parkfield.
Well, interesting spot here.
Both third and seven and minute to go on the clock.
You know, you may just go back to the basics.
It's Frank Warren sandwiched by a pitched catch.
And this part of the field does put wide receivers, one on the right, one on the left Stewart lining up inside Salmons back to pass he's look at end zone He's in trouble.
And he'll throw it away That may be downing and now they'll give him an incomplete pass Got it.
Close enough on the right side there.
Jeremy taunted again by the kid.
I told you about, just slapping it away and a flag is down.
Let's find out what happened here.
In the State House.
No flag on the flag.
Pick it up.
Greg Johnson.
28 yard field goal attempt.
This would really complete a very efficient first half for Parkview.
The kid has a wonderful football.
One of the best kickers that I've seen in recent high school.
Yeah he really he's got he drives the ball states.
Big time foot 17 nothing Parkview leading west side make it second quarter 55 seconds left what do you maybe a big.
Run back here maybe that's what west side Macon's got the got cooking.
Well they got Stewart I believe and they got Pressley back there I know is the guy they want to get in space and create something.
For him.
55 seconds to go in the first half, 17 nothing.
Parkview of a West Side Making.
Part for you, going about their job very efficiently.
Both, you know, using the heat, the pieces that got him here.
Craig Johnson will kick in toward Pressley is deep.
They've got a lot of balance.
I think what they decide to do with the football when they get it right here depends on where this ball.
Ends up.
And it's good of Kendall.
Bring it out.
Boston 20, and he's on the 24 yard line and.
Really a place where they don't want to mess around.
Let's go back to the gym, see what's happening at halftime.
I think steak earlier today, that Double-A semifinal.
Washington Wilkes and Cook the star of the game take his term in 237 yards two touchdowns now he needs 138 yards to break.
Herschel Walker single season rushing record of 3167 championship game scheduled for next Saturday night at 730 at America's Tigers and the Panthers.
Back to you guys.
Back to the action and going straight ahead, Antoine Stewart, not much there.
They may just be content to try to go to the locker room and figure out how to attack Parkview in a different manner.
That's the fun of that work.
Last week, Ball down 2413 and again a much taller task with Parkview.
But well down here inside the 30 yard line they certainly don't want to give up something that, you know, cheap to.
You can't afford when you're still in this football game and you have a great comeback capability, but you cannot afford anything that happens.
The handoff is outside of freshly impressive barrels ahead.
They go after the football pretty good and he is knocked down.
So he takes a pretty good look end the first half and an exciting one.
It was particularly important for the Parkview Club that uses Jeff's brain core the way these guys did the Parkview Panthers one half away from taking on the Harrison Hoyas and West Side making Cinderella tale may only have 24 minutes, but we'll find out what's going to happen.
Tough talk right now in a second and one of the coaches and and find out his perception of what has been a very beautiful and efficient half for Parkview.
Let's go down now to Rob Trible with Coach Cecil Flow.
Well, Coach, it seems you obviously had this team out, man, but they did come back on Shiloh last week.
How much do you make sure you let your kids know that at halftime at zero zero, that's what it is.
Is zero zero going in the second half and our kids got to play just as hard.
This coming up high up this we just played or we'll be in trouble.
I mean, they have a they have a long history of being a second half team.
And they did that last week at Shiloh.
They did that in Houston County.
I mean, and you just you wait.
You'll see that we're going to have to play real good.
We've played real good in the first half.
Just talk about both sides of the ball.
A lot of quality there.
Yeah, it is a good two good football teams out here right now play.
We are we need to keep sustain ourselves, you know, and we need to move on into the end zone just, drive them out of there.
I think we can we take care of the ball pretty well.
We just go in and make a few adjustments and go second half.
All right.
Good luck in the second half.
Well, you know, Coach Bo's obviously smiling on the inside.
He's got to feel good about his chances.
Let's go back upstairs.
One half.
One half out of the way.
Parkview Leading West Side 17, nothing.
Jeff Frank, Korean company looking to beat Harrison.
We'll come back.
You're watching the Georgia High School Association Football Championships on TV.
Nothing like the holiday season in downtown Atlanta as you look at Centennial Olympic Park.
And welcome back to the Georgia Dome, everybody, as we continue on with the football semifinals.
Great game park view and west side don't count west side out.
Last week they trailed that half 2414 to Shilo and they came back coach.
Right.
Well, they did.
And I heard Coach Davis's interview last week on the radio, and he was very positive about his team's comeback and how they attacked the second half.
And no one.
Coach Davis, they will attack this half and you'll see a different football team.
You better not get out West Side can tell you that.
Like Cecil Flo said, they're going to tell their kids, we're starting at zero zero.
Okay, here's the part for you.
Marching band.
And Jay say they.
Were with Park is very scholarly looking band director Alan Bates.
Just tell me about your competitive season.
You guys slave away in the summer, just like the football team does as you guys do this year, we did real well.
We went to two competitive events and placed real high in both of them and a noncompetitive event got top awards there.
So it went real well.
You know that plus that plus football games.
We have 19 performances under our belt since the 1st of August, so it's been a long season.
How hard is it?
You've got good numbers out here.
How hard is it to maintain big numbers in a bad cause?
It's always nice to have more mouths to put around the instruments.
Well, it's nice to have it's hard because the increased graduation requirements in the state and in Gwinnett County make it tougher.
Kids get crammed in.
A lot of them have to take summer school to get the extra coursework in.
But we think it's worth it and most of them do, too.
All right.
Well, that's it for banners.
Go back upstairs.
All right.
Thanks a lot, Rob.
It's halftime.
Parkview leads at 17.
Nothing over West Side making more of the halftime festivities from the Georgia Dome after this.
You're watching the Georgia High School Association Football Championships on TV.
We continue with more of the halftime festivities from the Georgia Dome Parkview leading at the half 17 nothing.
Here's the West Side High School marching band.
That's ball rolling all for you.
And the football.
That's it.
Here with the Grand Puba, the West Side Band.
Jim Blanton I notice you don't have quite the numbers at Parkview has.
What does that like dealing with that?
Well, we just have to make sure that everybody's got their part covered to the best of their ability.
Everybody's marching the drill and playing the music throughout the entirety.
We can't have anybody any let down out there.
Oh, look on the bright side and pay as much money for busses.
They can probably all cram into one bus right.
True.
That's true.
So tell me about a trip you have coming up to Virginia.
Yeah, we're going to go up to Williamsburg, Virginia, perform at a concert band festival up there and also do a march and parade competition.
Some of the events that we're going to be taking part in visiting Busch Gardens, a cruise up the up the river, kind of a dinner dance cruise and a visit to Colonial Williamsburg.
So we're in the fundraising phase of that right now.
They're correct.
Right in the middle of it.
Yeah.
All right.
Well, Jim, maybe you can reach into your deep pockets and cut this man a check.
Let's go back to you all.
Sure.
Thanks, Rob.
Put the pressure on me.
All right.
Great job, Rob.
I'll tell you what, Coach Mark Hughes, offensive line first half, definitely the.
Difference.
Oh, no doubt.
They took the drive and went 80 yards.
They control the line of scrimmage and with a lot of pressure on websites, defense and I think their size is wearing them down as they go along.
We have first half highlights between Parkview and West Side, Macon.
I'll tell you what a big play by Clint Savage.
The Jeff Frank car not set up a first play of a highlights and it's a quarterback sneak coming up by Clint Salmons to give Parkview a seven nothing lead and when Parkview take control of the offensive line it sets up plays on the offensive on the offensive side of the ball a lot easier for the team double.
Oh, yeah, without a doubt.
It just, you know, it opens up the offense once you establish a run, then you've got the pass capability.
So when the offensive line of scrimmage is making holes, it just opens up the whole offense.
You know, everybody's been talking about, well, here come the first half highlights and we talked about that quarterback sneak by Simmons Salmons And there it is with seven nothing Parkview Then Frank Kirk comes up with a big interception coach.
Oh, great play.
Well, look at the break the ball it's a great break.
And he carries the ball down to inside the ten yard line and they go in and goal.
And then a one yard touchdown from Clint Salmons.
Another quarterback sneak.
And then Parkview Shawn Dawkins gets into the act.
Shawn comes up with a big run here down to the West Side 37.
Well, look at the hole.
And the offensive line is controlling the ball game.
And that's the key to the park music.
Say it.
And that set up this 28 yard field goal by Greg Johnson and that makes it 17 nothing at the half.
And here's your halftime stats, coach.
Well, as you see, Bobby, who's got 166 total yards to 77 from Whiteside.
And we were talking earlier about how everybody's talking Parkview Harrison since that 17 nothing at the half.
Little did you know that at the beginning of the season in the quirky Cal classic Parkview played Harrison and the very first game of the year here at the Dome.
And in overtime, Parkview beat Harrison eight seven.
And guess who was the only guy that scored a touchdown for Parkview?
Jeff Francoeur picked up a fumble 35 yards for the only touchdown.
All right.
More from the Georgia Dome after this.
You're watching the Georgia High School Association Football Championships on TV.
Steak SHAPIRO and Bobak, we're live at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta where the five eight semifinals have one half behind them, an opportunity to meet the Harrison Hoyas in the championship game next week.
And so far it was the Parkview Panthers early and often bowl leading 17 nothing.
Hey, Coach Flow said going into the intermission that you're the scores.
Nothing, nothing.
That's the way they've got to approach it.
Because of the comeback for West Side last week against Shiloh, they were down in that game, came back to beat them 35 to 24.
Yeah.
And so that's been their pattern.
I mean, they're an outstanding second half team and they don't play a lot of players both ways.
They think that's an advantage in terms of stamina.
They also think that, you know, if they put themselves in a position where they can wear teams down and guys going both ways, that's going to help them.
But part of your strength, though, is their size.
Sizes is just absolutely huge.
They're a big high school football team and they've, quite frankly, have worn down West Side a little bit.
You know, they're getting that offensive line, those blocks of granite that we talked about have been doing just a sensational job.
Guys like Alexandra, tight end, Sudduth, Fleming Spellman, Armstrong, Loving Boogie and Gustavsson, they're just, you know, just the same blocking downfield.
They've just been excellent.
Let's take a look at some of the earlier action today, the single-A semis, Commerce 17, nothing above Lincoln County, the Double-A semifinals, Washington Wilkes 28 seven over Cook they'll move on the triple-A semi Swain's Barrow advances to the championship for the state of Georgia against Washington County.
They went 1774 a great game that finished a couple of hours ago.
States Barrow beats Creekside 2212.
Parkview will kick off with Greg Johnson kicking it.
Dorian Freeman, who is back.
There looking to start with a big run back here that just needs some kind of shot in the arm.
They need something to go their way.
They need to get the momentum.
George Pressley also back a find tailback west side make it looking to get something going.
They will touch the ball first trailing that 17 nothing and Wesley Francis will have a shot at this one.
At the 10 to 15 across and 20 he's at the 30 and he's so moving at 35 and then the 4040 yard line.
George Pressley, say, get my back.
Let's start this second half.
Coach Davis loves that.
He just needs something to get them going, some spark.
Tony Mathis taking over at quarterback this year for the first time for West Side.
You know, they thought he came alive last week in the second half against Shilo throwing the ball throws it well throws a nice ball he's you know, a little bit and he's a little more experienced in reading defenses.
When you're going against a defense like Parkfield, these guys can really make a play on the ball.
Let's see what Tony Mathis has up his sleeve, Antoine Stewart and George Pressley, 2000 yard rushers in the backfield for West Side Macon.
That did not get it going so much.
Only 100 yards rushing in the first half for West Side Nuggets.
What they did best really is moving the football.
But again, miscues hurt them, cutting a big interception BO and then a miscue in the backfield.
We've got an equipment problem here steak got to get those they've got to get those cleats tight.
Well, lace them up.
I hear you.
Lace them up so you can pick them up and put them down 11.
50 to third quarter to go first Tanner to west side make it has they start things off quarterback on outside their interlock two four Tony Mathis Todd Stewart the linebacker with a hit.
That's the quintessential wing team play which the quarterback is you know is deceptive is that you're faking it to the left side you're keeping it bootlegging it around the right.
Tony Mathis gain of three, second and seven from their own 45 yard line West Side making trying to make a game of this trailing powerful Parkview 17 nothing.
The Panthers looking at a home game next weekend if they can hold on over the next 24 minutes second and seven Mathis and Stewart Stewart allowing is way forward for the first out of the 46.
Stewart's their pound is six feet £200 1200.
Safety for that guy.
Two great blocking on the left side, Chris East and Cole Brantley.
The center west side making has shown an ability to run the football.
They haven't shown an ability to pass the football.
MATHIS To Stewart straight ahead for two.
Credit coach Davis West Side coming out with a lot of energy enthusiasm they don't know they're down 17 nothing.
They're playing this game like, you know, they're in control.
That's good coaching is coach Davis.
Stewart low run straight ahead if it's on the outside look for George Presley to seniors 2000 yard rushers both in the backfield.
To give us the press play 20 to 40 Pressley down to the 37 but a. Yard short of the first down Warren Dotson with a head.
Credit the coaching again they've shown that formation when they change the strength of formation from left to the right side.
Last time they did that they ran to the weakside.
This time they come back to the strong same.
Third quarter 1030 to go big third down conversion here look for Mathis to keep or Stewart to go straight ahead they cannot screw around with putting this football the air ball they need first downs.
Massive hands off Stewart Frost the 30 down to the.
27 great block the right side by Brad Odom.
Brad Odom, Logan White, the wide receiver out there, also getting a downfield block.
Isn't this great?
Seeing a club come out down 17?
Nothing.
This is what they're this is what they made their reputation on second half comebacks and they come out with this much energy and fire.
George Pressley with a great block, also a fine tailback helping to spring.
His counterpart, Antoine Stewart first and ten ball at the 28 yard line in double handoff and crunch that's not going anywhere the freshman Travis Evans.
That's the wing reverse where you give the inside handoff coming back to the other side.
Hit by it made by Todd Stewart Watch Stewart here ball number 16 He wasn't fooled I.
See how the play blew up those stake with the penetration of Parkview.
Now boy were in the same situation we talked about in the first half Tony MATTHEWS has not been able to convert anything through the air.
They haven't been able to get anything throwing the football downfield.
And at some point you get in these second and third and long, you got to need to do that.
Tony Mathis, flank to the right side.
New quarterback.
They shake the hand up, they go outside and proceed.
He's down to the 3225 play and knocked out of bounds.
It looked like he was out earlier.
But that's a first down the 13.
How about that call.
Ball you know they're changing up things and came in at quarterback that's Chandler Penn and they flanked Mathis out to the right side and then ran away from the strength of the formation.
Yeah.
And it was a pure individual effort by George Press.
I mean, this is all Pressley Ball.
Watch him scoop that sideline.
He's a talented runner.
Looked like he may have been out of bounds a little early.
But again, the spot is 13 and we've got a flag on a play and we'll find out what this is.
A killer.
Killer penalty now against West Side.
Make it.
That's too bad.
Illegal procedure.
Yeah.
On the offense.
Five yard penalty.
Repeat two down.
Tony Mathis back in the game at quarterback And that's a killer a real killer and Mathis in trouble here both you because if you go vertical you know how talented that secondary is an outstanding penalty in in the game and Tony Mathis will stay in and go wide left two wide receivers to the right here to the left Tony Mathis is wide and handoffs straight ahead and up in there and twice to it.
So trying to get more involved offensively.
Tony Mathis not playing.
Wideout see I think what happened with with their wide on the first formation he didn't cover the tight end and they didn't have enough men on the line of scrimmage.
And that was the procedure called Zeb McKenzie.
You want to know what people in Gwinnett County are worried about if you don't go to Parkview?
He's only a sophomore.
You're going to watch him for a couple more years.
Johnny Mathis, by the way, has two receptions this year for.
11 yards, 13, 16.
Mathis looking to go downfield, plenty of time to throw.
Great pass connection down to the 40 yard line.
George Pressley with a catch the best executed play through the air all night.
Yeah and you like the way I keep saying way they come out and just trying to take charge of the second half.
Look at that.
Look at the excellent ball that Johnny Mathis throws.
Look at that time by the only rush three Parkview and.
It was a perfect, you know, perfect pocket that was formed.
And he just went to town there with a big completion first and ten ball, the 14 West Side, making it busy.
And I think the pressing matters is touchdown.
A huge defensive stop by Todd Stewart, who has been dominating all night, though.
Todd Stewart as defensive coordinator.
Stewart's son, also his brother is one of the coaches, Kevin coaches, the wide receivers for Parkview.
Well, they just blew up that play.
Bo absolutely blew it up for a ten yard loss.
They fake on the end to Pressley and then try to get Matt as outside with Ashley Pressley giving him a lead.
BLOCK Todd Stewart's got some closing speed.
Doesn't give you defense is unbelievable.
There's Jerry Stewart he's proud of the sound of that last play.
Looks like Jerry Sandusky's involved a little bit second and 20.
What does Robert Davis have in mind here?
Fall at the park for you 20.
Four throw options late to keep it.
MATHIS Across the 22 out of the.
Try to get a little bit back set up both third about 14.
Todd Brooks and Joey Sturdevant on the hit.
Oh I like that play that they ran before with the completion to Presley maybe they can run something like that, sneak somebody out of the backfield in the middle of the field seems to be open against Parkview.
You see how you don't want to throw to the outside, to the perimeter because you got that guy out there.
Yeah, just Jeff Frank.
And don't go away from him.
That's my advice.
13, 13 to 17.
Mathis back to pass he's in trouble going down field.
Great catch and they got it and see if they give it to him they have if they have it short of the first down but great hands by Marlon White, the sophomore who was victimized by Frank Gore.
And we got a.
Huge fourth down look at the play ball.
What a great throw on the run and good hands just picked it right off the calf.
Great arm strength.
And two, the play of the Day coming up.
What do you do, Mr. Bok?
Well, the Play of the day, we've got the wing.
You've got the option.
What I would do is taking time out.
That's taking time out.
And let's talk it over.
Brant Brock, the offensive coordinator played at Florida State, is coach Robert Davis.
My friend Brock is going to talk to his troops in the huddle.
608 to go Parkview Leading West Side 17 Nothing here in the third quarter.
We're in the five semifinal championship game at the Dome and Beau early on in the second half West Side, Macon has come out with what you like to call playing personality.
Yeah, they really have.
And whether you like that.
The way they break the huddle and maybe you can't be successful without a playing personality.
Parkview has got one.
We didn't really see it from West Side in the first half, but they've come out now and they've come out with a renewed energy coach, obviously told them, hey, guys, this is our chance.
You know what we've done this year?
We've been in situation before.
They have driven the football and move the football a little bit.
Tonight had not been total domination.
I think Parkview has just taken advantage of turnovers and and big plays and put themselves in position.
Here comes Tony.
Masters fourth and two big, big play early in his second 608 to go a long drive so far that he's looking to throw and to make a connection he had him George Presley in the flat and Tony MATTHEWS just did not.
Deliver.
He had time to call.
Was there ball.
Well he ran to his left side is tough with a throw variety running to the left side.
He didn't square his shoulders to the receiver, consequently couldn't get enough on the ball.
Thrown against your body is what you're doing when you're rolling out and throwing that way.
And he had more time.
He almost rushed.
His coach, Brant Brock, right now talking with Tony Mathis, along with Robert Davis.
See, that's exactly what he's telling them.
Tell him to put it up.
Let him run under it.
He tried to drill that.
Now you want to kind of lead him to the outside here in that situation.
All right.
First look at Park View's offense in the second half, 17, nothing.
They lead the handoff.
It's straight ahead to Dawkins.
Dawkins gets a hammer, they're popping down there.
And again, in the middle of all the action is Jeremy Townsend kid is a soft is a senior but is really as ferocious a hitter as we've seen really in at least two in the championship.
We've been watching both number 29.
Jeremy Townsend Oh, he's been sensational for West Side and he's their leading tackler.
The whole purpose of, of their defense now is try to pin Parkview.
Second and eight 531 to go third quarter Parkview Panthers leading 17.
I think it's outside the docket and he's got a great play by the defense in the backfield right there to cut down Shawn Dawkins and say, we got to get our offense the football back.
Well, you should have seen the block downfield these, guys.
Just keep going.
You can just see it on the right hand side of your screen about ten yards downfield.
Parkfield is really an excellent coach.
Football James Ruse, the corner with the hit right there.
Super job getting in the backfield.
Third and seven.
Coach Cecil Faux not happy with his first two plays in the second.
But I'll tell you what he is happy about both that clock 450 to go third quarter third and seven for 48 to go third quarter shotgun formation looking downfield.
And that's a connection for a first down across to the 23 Joey Stewart about the sophomore to the catch.
Great protection mean when you have that kind of protection you can wait find somebody open the Sturtevant was wide open.
Just a perfectly executed play there and really what it really does is continue to chew that clock up, look for a sort of a bow.
By the way, he's a sophomore to be a big factor in the coming years as well.
And he'll be catching passes from Dustin Wade.
The sophomore backup quarterback had a chance to talk to his dad at halftime.
A great fan of our radio station seven out of the Zone and a great gentleman, a great kid who was going to be running the show.
Clint Salmons, three of seven so far in the game has not had to do much except hook up with Mr. Frank for the pitches on the outside and goes for very little sort on again getting a shot at and it looks like he's got a holding call on the play.
It comes in a little late.
Comes in late and this is what West Side needs.
They're hoping it is a holding call because they want they really want to get field position for their second possession of this second half.
They've got to get something on the board.
Well, I can't I can't stress enough how crucial that fourth down miscue was, because, I mean clock now we go back to first and ten is just moving.
Note with Parkview running the ball no need to throw it it's.
Never going to save long yeah.
This ball is not going to be in the air.
Much ball in the second half.
Holding on the offense ten yard penalty down first down.
You just tuning in and joining us for the five semifinal championship game here at the Georgia Dome Steak SHAPIRO and Beau Bock from Atlanta.
Sports Leader, Sports talk seven of his own to win the games here on TV and very grateful for the opportunity to call a great game last night and stars Mitchell and Harrison and a great one.
And also tonight, the Parkview and West Side make it spread.
The field here.
Stake four wide receivers to the right to the left, they'll set a man in motion.
And out to Frank Curran, the flat and Frank Corners cut down about the 2019 yard line is so.
Suited to the speed of that West Side defense, they had that block pretty well, but there were more people over there than they could block.
And that's because of the excellent pursuit of the West Side defense, which is a run by David Bruce, their defensive coordinator.
They like to run their tight end.
Kirk Alexander.
You know, he's close to the tight end.
He plays split and he catches shuffle pass earlier in the game in the first half.
They do a lot with him.
He's a senior.
Is he going anywhere but next year?
Well, he's 63 to 20 and there's a couple of schools talking to him.
Some of the small schools, the Furman's a West Georgia.
So schools like that so far.
Second and 14 338 to go pass over the middle.
Connection looks like Sturtevant and he could go 40 3020 and cut down at the one quick tent.
But Clint Simmons says hello to a sophomore and has a big game.
Now, tell you what, that was a beautifully designed play, but you can't say enough about the throw.
That throw was absolutely perfect.
Hit him in.
Stride.
Let's look at him.
Right in stride, through it, through traffic.
And can you imagine, Kent Speed, look at the closing speed that he's got just heard of.
It's moving pretty well himself.
Sort of as just looking at that end zone and saying, this is it.
I'm a sophomore playing for Parkview Panthers.
I'm about to score six in the dome.
It's can I can I can I say, with all due respect, the throw was nice, but I mean, the catch and run was much more impressive.
I mean.
It looked like about a three yard slant to me.
Timeout Parkview and well, we talked about a momentum crusher, obviously not getting the fourth and two because you put the football back with Parkview in that.
That's dangerous.
Here's a play right here.
What you got a great catch.
What's about speed?
Athleticism?
It's what Franco does.
So what Sturdivant does here, I mean, he's out running.
He's out running West Side, making much of that great call.
Great call against that defense, because the safeties were up and you throw it, you know, almost like a slant to the middle of the field, which was vacated, you know, Parkview.
When you look at sophomores like that, you know, they have Denver Bronco uniforms, but they reload like Tennessee.
No question about they graduated in numbers next week on GPB, the finals, Statesboro, Blue Devils and Shower Raiders 730.
And on Saturday night, the five day final, the Harrison Hoyas and the Parkview Panthers.
If they hold on or West Side, make it, if they make the big comeback, if it is hard for you and Harrison, that game is at Parkview.
First and goal salmons handoff inside touchdown Sean Dawkins.
Now you look back at that fourth down play that pass and how important that was because he couldn't punch it in right there then you second opportunity was the pin park for you down there in there end and get good field position about Nick Field as you take over for your second possession.
Now your second possession is going to be down by another score.
Your first and 20 and you hold Frank here on that little on that little screenplay, only about four or five yards, but then all of a sudden, sturdivant just bust one, and you're in deep trouble.
And that's Coach Davis nose.
In.
23.
Nothing.
And make it 20 for Coach Davis.
By the way, both those familiar with high school football in Georgia know of his great run and.
Want a legend.
Won three state titles, a couple of national titles.
He's had much, much more talented teams than the one he brought to the Georgia Dome tonight.
And with a three year old program with West Side to get deeper than any other Macon school has in the last 25 years in the playoffs is you know a testimony to his his coaching abilities.
Yeah west side make again a ten and three season they were not ranked coming into the playoffs they had losses during the year to Warner Robins Brookwood north side of ten and three year and looked like they were out of gas against Shiloh last week.
I guess it was down 2413.
They real off a huge second half shut out Shiloh in the second half and get themselves in position to go to the dome.
Here's the replay.
DAWKINS Great blocking on that right side, that offensive line, huge offensive line count Kyle Armstrong and Greg Spellman doing the job in.
And the lead block from Austin Ogletree, who has been sensational for them on both sides of the ball, plays fullback and linebacker, 137 tackles from the defensive side.
And when he carries the ball, he averages 5.1 yards per carry.
Drive with six plays, three yards took 256.
Dawkins goes over from one and guard back will kick away Taurean Freeman sent to return there he is the sophomore who turned this football game over to Parkview in the second half.
Greg Johnson So.
That may be the crusher but certainly puts West Side Macon in deep, deep trouble.
20 for nothing.
Here's the kick 309 to go.
Third quarter.
It's one of those mortars, if you will, and a fair catch call for by Mitch Mitchell.
A smart play by him to fair catch that.
I want to see him catch and run Mo come on.
We need we need something big there.
Well, when you're going backward and you're catching the ball over your shoulder, tough to reverse.
I'm surprised at you.
I thought you want to.
See blockers in front of you, your wedges.
You know how for coffee and bagel.
You know the XFL, there won't be you not allowed to fair catch.
How many guys are going to get decimated in that league?
24.
Nothing.
Three or nine to go.
Handoff is straight ahead close for about five to Antoine store.
What do you think about that role ball.
But that rule.
No fair catch.
Well, what can you say?
I don't know.
I don't know is all I see is.
What do you need to see?
I mean, you know, football, you're not allowed to fair catch.
They have to give them they have to give them a halo, allow the guy to catch it.
They'll give them away.
I mean, if you don't give me a halo ball, want to just like, you know, line them up like a blocking dummy and just hammer them.
I think it's got to be.
You think it's going to be nutty swag down on the way.
A little too antsy, just wanting to get that play going.
They were pulling both guards to the right side.
Do you think the XFL has chance?
I think it has a chance at that time of year.
I think everybody's going to tune in just to see your how frozen they are playing.
And Soldier Field in February.
Yeah, exactly.
That ball foul ball start on the offense.
Five yard penalty steal second I.
Still haven't figured out the cheerleaders and they're going to go with the most scantily clad cheerleaders in keeping with the WWF motif.
Yet they're going to play in February an outdoor stadium.
So those ladies are going to get hypothermia second and ten.
The handoff is a straight ahead to Antoine Stewart and very little game there.
I think it's, you know, Tony Mathis last week against Shiloh was able to really throw in the second half.
We have spoken about that.
And at this point, I'm thinking maybe Coach Davis is thinking that, you know, why make this a blowout, why it's turning this over?
Yeah.
Let's not embarrass ourselves here.
The final score, Mathis faking outside and getting he's in hot pursuit, turned to throw in the run and he goes out of bounds, maybe gets a late hit there.
No, it is not good.
Non-Call by the referee in Willie Wallace, Sutter's drove them out of bounds.
But to talk about an absolute match.
Well, as I said right here, I drove them out.
Actually.
Well, Greg Spellman, who ran him down, Sutter made the hit.
Spellman showing good speed.
Sudduth is six for two fifties, got 102 tackles, seven sacks Furman South Carolina Kentucky looking at him right now.
And also plays on the offensive line.
Also is there long snapper guy like that can play for ten years in the National Football League is a long snapper.
Fourth and 11 and they will punt this football away to the dangerous arms of Jeff Frank Gore.
Not a good kick to see what Franklin wants to do with it.
Not much is going to roll and take a park view bounce at the 40.
Two that was by design just trying to positional kick to keep it away from Frank caught.
139 to go third quarter 24 nothing Park view live at the Georgia Dome on a Saturday night in downtown Atlanta Steak SHAPIRO Bo back part of the TV all day marathon and for two straight days.
I got to tell you, look around this booth.
Here is some people here has been spent about 12 hours.
I don't even know if they went home.
It's a motley crew right now.
So Land of the Zombies, this.
Booth, we got some good information coming, by the way, in our fourth quarter, we got our ace info guy behind this gentleman had to come back some tales to leave Prince Simmons under center when we pointed out that they hand up straight ahead to Brad Lester, the freshman.
You know what's going to happen now?
Both so young men are going to get their first chance to carry the ball in the Georgia Dome, including perhaps quarterback Dustin Wade talking to his dad at halftime.
His hope was obviously maybe there's a chance to get some of the guys involved.
Yeah.
Just to see some of the youngsters getting here.
That's when you can do when you have depth, a program like this, west side with a little different defensive look, they give you a43 look.
There are base 50 defense.
Brad Lester by the way, by the kid who just carried the by the freshman may be the fastest player if you can believe that on the part of the Panthers club wow second and three ball on the 49 yard line of Parkview they lead 24 I think 50 seconds to go.
Quarter number three pitches outside.
It goes to Lester.
Lester trying to get through a hole there and no doubt about the 48.
And he's very close to a first down as the clock continues to move.
James Rouse with the tackle.
You can see how lickety split quick he is.
So he had the move to the inside, thought he had the seam.
It closed quickly.
They bounced it outside.
That's just not fair ball.
I mean, that is just not fair to have this kid being one of the faces on the team.
He's a freshman.
Let me get this straight.
Let me see the ninth grader.
Mm.
Wow.
Not to mention Joey Sturdivant, who's a sophomore who also has got another couple of years to do what he did earlier this quarter, which is outrun the opposition, something Barkley is very good at.
I would think Bo, both coaches probably in the same mentality of wanting to move this game along in terms of the fourth quarter and running the football.
And the left part of your screen there.
That's Neal hour to go with Robert Bell as offensive coordinator of this club.
It's his first year of his belt, went to Berkeley as their head football.
And we saw Robert Davis, too, trying to figure out what to do with his opponent.
That's it for the third quarter after the handoff.
Straight ahead, a gain of about two yards to C.J.
Thomas and a couple of guys getting carries now that ordinarily do not get as many and we may see more of that in the fourth quarter.
I'll tell you what we'll see in.
The fourth quarter, one of the great teams in the state of Georgia get themselves set for a home game watching the Parkview Panthers take it to the house 20.
Four.
Nothing will come back.
You're watching the Georgia High School Association Football Championships on TV.
Big Steak SHAPIRO Bobak, back here at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, start of quarter number four, the Parkview Panthers leading the West Side, make it Seminoles 24, nothing bone.
It has been a a story of a dominant football program continuing to dominate a team that came in with a Cinderella story in its third year as a varsity football team.
Bone there, they're getting taught a lesson and.
You can't take anything away from what the Seminoles have done.
This year.
And over the last three years, only the third varsity season of this program.
This has been a sensational run.
Second and eight ball on the 46 yard line and west side make it Clint Simmons under center they'll off to shut it down at the 45 Quinn Simmons the senior quarterback for Parkside outstanding athlete two rushing touchdowns that was flag on the play two rushing touchdowns on the day by Clint Simmons is going to Georgia but he's going as a baseball player one of the great catchers in the state threw out 19 of 22 runners last year.
And he will be a part of that ever building baseball program at Georgia.
Frank Hall may be a baseball player himself when he's a senior next year in the shotgun right now.
But Frank Cooper hit forward to last year, had 15 home runs, which was the Gwinnett County record.
Looking downfield Simmons a cannon arm on a great catch on the sideline Oh, that's big time That's Jeff Frank caught one to watch a big time play.
Mr. Bock.
How about Clint Simmons and Jeff Frank core right there?
No, there's a battery made some baseball almost.
Actually, Frank caught plays outfield.
Look at that gun elbow.
Look at this cannon.
And look at the catch.
Looks like Chris Carter on the line.
I mean, does not get any better than that.
Holy smokes.
They talk about his arm and baseball threw out 19 of 22 would be base stealers.
That's just so big time right there first and ten ball at the 31 yard line and west side making they'll continue to move the ball they won't throw it unless it's third down.
I would not imagine the handoff the straight ahead the shot doc is a bust as they throw and fighting fighting fighting down to the 24 yard line a gain of about seven on the play.
Right side of that park for you offensive line is Armstrong level good opening holes the right side they've been running right quite a bit.
I still can't get over that Simmons to Frank caught pitching catch that's that was something he's throwing it he's throwing elbow and he's running a little bit to the left side and he threw that ball probably 30 yards.
How about Shawn Dawkins?
7.6 yards per carry, 114 yard, 17 carries.
Second and four ball on the 25 Parkview continue to roll to give it up the middle of Dawkins.
He is cut down short of the first down to be about third and three.
But basically you want west side make it just to hold their head up, make a play, get on the scoreboard, that bagel off that board, go into spring ball feeling exceptional about yourself.
That Frank a family boy.
You were talking Frank here you were talking about what an athlete he is.
His father is a sister, played basketball at Oglethorpe.
His mom ran track at Vandy.
His dad played soccer, golf for Vanderbilt and his brother played football for Gardner-Webb.
That's called good genes, among other things, 34 out of a shotgun.
They take the hand out, they look downfield across the body there and.
More play by Simmons just threw it away great coverage by the Seminoles.
So we're going to get another look at one of the best foots in the game.
What are we doing here?
Here's a good look at Salmons.
This is a Greg Johnson.
Oh, Craig Johnson, by the way, they had a Parkview A Panther Jamboree.
He had a 58 yard field goal at the Jamboree.
So he's the leg for.
Another that baby.
All right.
Hammered it.
Oh, he's down the hammer, down 42 yards, 30.
Nine yards, 39 ball would have been good from that kick would have been good for I don't know where but deep hard to believe some of these kids are high school players.
But look at the foot on this.
How many is he clearing that by?
Well, that would have been good from from 50.
You know, Anderson is getting a little long in the tooth at times, Mr. Bok, that left foot of his.
Wall don't give Dan Rivers any ideas the way he drafts.
We could go into the high schools.
Taking an opportunity in this high school broadcast, Mr. Bok, to lay out your Atlanta sports agenda, if you will.
Come on down.
Next thing you know, we're going to get a dissertation on Bobby Cox.
Please tell me that's not coming back home.
Both of these teams play with great hard.
27 nothing park view leading West Sides West Side.
Macon has had an incredible run here, a ten three season unranked in the playoffs and they rolled in here full of confidence with a coach who has been here before.
But they ran into the dynasty that the Black Panthers program and they have gotten stomped.
On Seminoles get yourself a run down.
In Boston 25 outside of the 31, an individual play here out of the 40.
And that's battling Clint Kent, who has been involved a lot today.
Bo really makes a nice run.
And we haven't talked about Parkview as special teams.
We have talked about the kicking game, but the kicking game is absolutely superb because they've able to positional kickoff, you know, they're able to pin people on the sideline.
Luckily, somehow West Side Macon has been able to get something out of it too long.
Returns after two great kickoffs.
Parkview scoring grab nine plays, 33 yard took 4 minutes and 28 seconds and Johnson hammered a 42 yard field goal.
Chandler Penn and it cornerback and now handoff straight ahead to George Pressley who is cut down by the way what is gardner-webb you familiar with that school good.
So John Drew played basketball.
What league are they in?
Gardner-Webb.
I'm not familiar.
Well, you obviously don't remember Bucky Pope, the Catawba killer.
Now, I know John Drew, though, second and eight ball at the 44 yard line of West Side looking down field.
Oh, great.
Over the middle, down to the 37 of Parkview it's Dexter Howard.
He is a good look as sophomore wide receiver and nice combination of Chandler Penn to Dexter Howard.
Take a look at it.
Well, a poise here from Chandler Penn knew exactly where he was going with the ball.
And it's a very accurate tight spiral.
What year is Chandler Penn?
He's a senior.
Tony Mathis be back next year is the start of Chandler Penn getting a chance in his final game as a quarterback.
Tony Mathis, couple of catches on the year splits in the left side.
We don't want to see a shutout.
We'll look at some points.
So that's a false start.
Oh, every time they get something going, just something that sets them back, takes their momentum away.
And bites them.
Tony Mathis, a great athlete, as evidenced by the fact he's playing wide receiver right now.
That ball false start on the offense.
You see it right here on the right side.
Number 75, hello.
Trying to get to the postgame spread a little early, jumping offsides first and 15.
No, he's not trying to get to the postgame spread.
He doesn't want to yield.
So the kid's last night coming off the field in tears.
I mean, it puts so much emotion into this game.
Tony Mathis on the catch in some good tackling by Parkview Warren Dawson Lane 11.
As Dawson close on that so quickly does Mathis didn't have a chance on.
That 740 to go west side Macon trying to get off the Schneid getting the end zone here get somebody a touchdown in the Georgia Dome would be a big throwback.
It's been here before, though.
They had a game here earlier this season and it know a match up at the Georgia Dome.
They played in the car he killed kickoff classic.
Back to pass Mathis flushed out of the pocket He'll go right in hot pursuit Parkview and Mathis Hudson going into practice man did he take a tough kid over there?
Can hammered by Todd Stewart looking for Clint Kent who's at wide receiver we've talked about part of the special teams that they both impressive bunch they have a message in their fieldhouse back at Parkview special teams may win the game for us but don't let special teams lose the game for us.
Words to live by.
Yes indeed.
This would be the first shot out of the dome this year about here's the life of a handheld camera guy.
Look at him on the sideline.
Here, watch him.
Oh, gee, TV getting in the mix and kept him Tracy look at Tracy Bo where.
To go trace.
Kept his balance too.
He took it, took the hit, kept his feet.
Is a park his 12th.
Man forward pass on the offense five yard penalty and a loss of their.
Second.
Tracy Tracy bounces right back.
He's a warrior.
He's a sophomore, Tracy.
And he's going to be going to Clemson next year.
Pass the line of scrimmage when he threw that ball.
That is not allowed even when you're trailing 27,000 1315 here.
Math is back under center, trying to get a first down here and move the chains haven't had much success in 13 long today MATTHEWS are going.
To go back around across the series go take off just the 35 to the 3225 that the 2020 map is.
One of the first times that I could get his athleticism going.
I think we may have a facemask down there.
We have a fumble on the hit and west side.
Make it.
We'll turn it over.
Todd Brooks looked like he recovered it.
Flag down on the play.
Let's see what we have here.
They want to go back.
Bo.
I think it was a halfback option.
If they wanted to even attempt.
Oh, great.
Strip Joey Sturdevant recovers Bo the free safety.
You remember that name?
How can you forget that name?
He's had a big offensive play in this second half.
Bo hold the New York Yankee baseball named Tom.
Sturtevant 652 to go.
The handoff is to C.J.
Thomas, the senior.
C.J.
Thomas and Christian Dawkins.
Sherman to Mitchell.
Strong safety, making.
The tackle and.
Clint Salmons still in the game 629 to go fourth quarter Parkview Leading West Side 27 nothing.
Thanks for watching us tonight on TV around the state of Georgia.
Don't forget, next Friday and Saturday night, my high school football championship, second.
And fourth down.
Either encroachment or a false start.
I think it was encroachment.
And I think coach flow, if they get into plus territory probably empty his bench.
But was it too early to start thinking about how these two clubs, Harrison and Parkfield, match up with each other?
I think that's going to be a great game.
Ball foul encroachment on the defense first half.
You Parkview was two or rather Harrison lost to Parkview in the quirky Cal kickoff classic and we've got a new quarterback in there now.
Justin Wade.
Dustin Wade, the sophomore.
They'll have the reins year and he finds himself playing under center at the Georgia Dome tonight what a great throw and he hands off he does it nicely c.j Thomas to carry.
I started to say they lost to Parkview by one point in overtime and that was based on the penetration after two five minute overtimes.
Parkview feels it was their worst game of the year.
They didn't come to play.
They didn't play well.
They think that at home they should be able to have a very good chance of capturing a state title against Harrison.
But they're going have to deal with the kid we saw last, Jonathan Walker and of course, Brian Green, that offense, Bryan Green at quarterback and Jonathan Walker at tailback.
Ball was was explosive.
Jonathan Walker was the you the quickest back that we've seen in two nights of playing.
Second and six ball in the 37 yard line Parkside side 27 arguing 27 nothing and they get straight ahead to C.J Thomas.
It goes for the first down it's this size ball that really was where everybody is undermanned against Parkview and the athleticism when they got guys playing both ways, both.
And although Coach Davis thought that would be an advantage for his club, the fact they don't play guys both ways.
I mean, third and fourth quarters, remember, they were tied ten, ten to East Kawada and it was a 3110 final.
Yeah, 30.
Absolutely right.
And I'll tell you what, you know, when you talk about that size, remember, know that size looked like almost a, you know, duplicity effect in the first half.
11 look like 12.
First step on the 45 handoff straight ahead.
A great little run by C.J.
Thomas.
Again, he's quite off of that game 3110 final.
That's where Jeremy Myers attended when Jeff Franco got the interception to break the all time record for the past few Panthers, if you recall, Bo.
And one of the things Jeremy Myers said when he came out of the stands, kind of a congratulating for breaking his record is he said that record doesn't matter.
You win a state title, so you got to go out and get that done.
And that's what I'll have a chance to do next week.
So Franco, he was there when he broke his record.
When he got his 12th interception, he said, Well, you've probably got a couple of cheap ones.
And what a great story.
Jeremy Myers is over at Georgia Tech, second and four.
The handoff is outside of Brad Lester, the freshman 23, 54 to go third and four.
You know Parkview when they played last time Bo the eight seven win four for Parkview against Harrison they fumbled twice in the overtime period and lost it and still won the game.
I think Coach Flow, just looking at the clock now and saying make it go faster.
Move along third and four, handoff up the middle and come up a little short.
Sean Dawkins getting.
Another carry.
As well, West Side now bringing everybody up to the line of scrimmage and coach flow is not going to take advantage of that.
He just wants to run the ball.
Jonathan Walker Bowl, by the way, and preview in next week's Harrison and Parkview matchup.
He said he wants another shot at the park for you Panthers.
He's a big timer and hasn't made a decision where he's going to school next year.
But what better way to highlight a tremendous season for Harrison and go to park for you and do something?
Revenge is a big motive in the National Football League.
In big time college athletics.
And, you know, also in high school.
I'm sure they'd like to be playing that game, though, in the Georgia Dome as opposed to having to travel to Parkfield.
Yeah, without a doubt.
We want to talk about atmosphere.
Oh, it's great.
It's great at Park View.
I mean, what that place is going to be like and they're going to have to get ready for the onslaught, expecting in the number of 12 to 15000 fans anyway.
They'll try to go more and put in some additional stands and really get that place ready to celebrate a state championship.
West Side takes a time out here, but when you talk about Park and you also have to include Brookwood, only a couple of miles apart, two of the best high school programs, the state.
You know Cecil flow as has become a legend in in Georgia high school sports and he's as proud of this team as is the one he won the national the state championship with a 97.
This team like no other team I'm proud of because they've they've battled through some adversity.
They've gotten they gotten over some hops that people said they couldn't get over.
You know, we struggled offensively to begin with and we made changes and we righted ourself.
And, you know, we're producing points now and it's a good balance in our defense.
It's been strong all year long and it's a good balance now.
Our team has played well and I'm tickled that they've stuck together as a team.
I haven't observed those offensive problems.
What I've seen up here tonight.
And they are a very well balanced team, they can run it, they can throw it.
Obviously, we've seen Salmons.
They ran a formation there basically to be able to hold on a football and I guess it was to get west.
I make an offsides on I'll be honest with you tonight.
I was looking at you for a moment.
Well, actually, what they did, they came out with their hands on their knees.
And then you were able to shift if you if you put your hands on the ground, you can't shift.
You can't move up and down.
After that, the hands on your knees.
The first man on the defense.
Five yard penalty, very similar to what Tom Landry used to do with the Cowboys.
Remember, before every snap, they would come out hands on the knees.
They would all go up in unison and then go down and put their hands on the on the on the grass.
Nothing wrong with that, by the way, at this point of the game, really.
I mean, you know.
Hang on to it.
Run the clock out.
Yeah.
I mean, they're not trying to embarrass anybody.
They're trying to hold the football and also trying to get some of their kids carries.
It may not get carries.
You have a senior, C.J.
Thomas, in his last game, certainly in the Georgia Dome, first in 10 to 43 to go try to run this thing out with the quarterback, Dustin Wade in the game they give to Thomas and Bo.
I got to imagine a lot of the reason why, Thomas continues gets these carries that he is a senior.
He exactly just go out with a flourish.
Next week, Harrison will have to start thinking about Jeff Frank, more about Sean Dawkins, about Clint Salmons, tight end Kirk Alexander, the offense certainly has come together and also Bo Joey Sturdivant, who's had three games in a row now where he's made a play like that to get down to the one yard line.
And a big catch we had earlier today.
A great way for a sophomore to break in.
The handoff to Thomas.
He fights his way down to about the 35 yard line clock continues to.
Move out of.
Territory.
Nothing worse they can do about this point.
No use calling you your last time out.
No, this score is indicative of what happened here tonight.
Doesn't need to be any worse.
Park view has dominated literally from the start.
The one hiccup was the Clint Simmons interception on their first possession.
Since that time it's been rock and roll for the past few Panthers ever handoff again up the middle of C.J Thomas.
He goes outside and gets cut down on the play.
Seminole still playing hard.
Four or five men waiting to the football, right?
Nikki making a hit.
They have a tradition with Parkfield, how they handle game day and season of Flow did not want to break tradition, despite the fact that they're playing a 9 p.m. game, which is not the norm.
And that's why the whole team went to breakfast this morning at the Golden Corral like they do with morning.
That's right.
Well, you know, you keep those issues together.
You know, you like the way they take the field.
You told me, Bo, you went, how many how many years before you change your underwear at you?
Miami.
Because you guys were on a hot streak.
Oh, no, you said h. We won a lot of games.
We were just thinking of steam in the South.
I've heard that they said that about our radio show, two fourth down and four flags down everywhere.
33 seconds to go in this one, somebody jumped somebody.
Procedure ball Patrick Alexander false.
Start on the offense five yard penalty their fourth down.
Oh they got a new quarterback in there.
Dustin Wade.
You've got this, by the way.
Nick Gower, their offensive coordinator, sees some flow talking with.
Dustin Wade, new quarterback, some new offensive linemen.
If you have TiVo, set your closet, your TV's.
Now next Friday 730 state's pro in shock in a four foray championship final and then Saturday night at Parkview, the Harrison Hoyas the Parkview Panthers play to call themselves the state champions from Georgia, Jonathan Walker and Jeff Francoeur and all kinds of other.
And you can see all of the games live.
Where are you going to see these?
Where are you going to see them?
This one's over.
Parkview Panthers run out the clock 27 to nothing.
The Parkview Panthers looking to repeat what they did in 1997 when they won the state championship.
And they are just about home, no pun intended.
They'll try to complete the state championship on Saturday night when they host the Harrison Hoyas, a total of fish and performance by one of the great programs in this state.
I think we might have one more play remaining.
Why would we bring them back for another play here?
What would be the purpose?
Might have been a defensive penalty.
You need, gentlemen, you need to call this a ball game.
They did.
They just did.
And they did.
And then there were two.
Cecil Flow with Robert Davis.
Season flow, Coach Flow and Coach Davis, two of the greats, two coaching legends in the state of Georgia.
And I know Coach Davis knows that he was undermanned.
Coach Davis knows he went up against the state power.
And they both himself have a lot of class, especially when this came.
Both it's very evident what the.
Lower coach Davis said.
You're saying you're too big for me, Coach.
And these Coach Flow is saying what a great job you've done to bring this young program to this point in the state playoffs.
That's deeper than any team has gone from a make in public school in 25 years.
Let's go down the field.
Rob's got the championship coach.
Well, coach, it's hard to believe saying that an undefeated team ever struggled, but you guys really did struggle offensively.
The of the year.
How gratifying has it been to watch these guys grow and come together and get to this point?
Well, it's great.
I mean, it's been a work in progress.
The kids have tried really hard.
There, fruitful bunch, you know, and they weren't they weren't happy with how things were going early.
Everybody was talking about how terrible they were.
You know, we can't score touchdowns, offense, can't play defense is playing good and.
We challenged them a little bit.
You know, we said, look, we make some changes.
We got to move the football.
You know what I told some of the kids that were in there that we changed out.
We got to do what's best for the football team.
Well, Coach, congratulations.
More breakfast at the Golden Corral.
Let's go back upstairs to gym.
Right.
Thanks, Rob.
Travel a great ballgame.
Aren't you Panthers?
Definitely the champions tonight against West Side Macon.
And of course, next weekend it'll be the five eight championship against Harrison.
We'll take a break.
Be back in just a moment.
You're watching the Georgia High School Association Football Championships on TV.
And welcome back to the Georgia Dome.
Parkview, a winner over West Side.
Make it 27 to nothing.
Jim Tanaka with the coach, Rodney Walker.
Rodney, it really was all part for you tonight.
It was a dominant performance by Park View.
They controlled the ball from the beginning and they just made a lot of great plays on defense and they had the better team.
Tonight, hats off to West Side for the fight they brought to Park View, but without a doubt, Parkview was the best team tonight.
Coach, we appreciate all your comments and the Q&A game and in the five game tonight.
And thanks again to help us out here at the Georgia Dome.
Well, thank you.
I certainly enjoyed it.
All right.
Now, coming up next week here on TV, Friday night, it's the quad, a state championship between state's burl and shore down in Columbus at 7:30 p.m. on TV.
