Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshiptime to play some football that's a championship team welcome to the georgia dome in atlanta tonight it's the georgia high school association 6a championship game as the third ranked tucker tigers take on the top ranked valdosta wildcats the tigers champions of region 4. they have won 13 straight since they opened the season with a 20 to 13 loss to kell right here in this building they've had a tough play off road last three weeks they've had to beat harrison mays and northside one robbins all three of those teams ranked in the top five at some point this season valdosta they've won eight in a row champions of region one they are also 13-1 on the season last week they traveled over 300 miles to win in the semifinals beating dalton 27-6 and good evening i'm matt stewart joined by former clark central gladiator former tennessee volunteer former atlanta falcons star state champion in 1984 former state champion in 1984 right big chuck smith how does it feel to be back in the state championship game with the valdosta wildcats for the first time since 1986. well when i see the valdosta nation all the way here it's almost like the whole county of lounge is here but it's amazing because this is how they travel but i remember back when i was playing i mean playing valdosta it was an honor they had a mystique about them playing against the wildcats and you know what they're doing now is phenomenal they're back they're backing football's just not right if valdas is not competing for a championship so it's good to see him here in the dome well this is amazingly their 32nd state championship game which is a state record they've won 23 state championships which of course is a state record but here's another amazing stat this is the first time they've ever played the state championship game here at the georgia dome and they've done it this year with two quarterbacks you know there's a saying in football if you have two quarterbacks you don't really have any well the wildcats have done it with josh belton and hunter holt and they've made it work well you know the head coach talked about coach rydermaker talked about whoever is hot he's the one that we're going to go to so it's a really interesting dynamic and coach rydermaker talked about he's never had this work ever in his career but the reason these two guys are making it work because they get along they're great guys and what he said it also unified the team he believes those two quarterbacks how well they got along also helped the wildcats come together and have such a great season meantime the tucker tigers playing in the state championship game for the fifth time ever a third time in the last nine years they won it here in this building in 2008 won it in 2011 lost to the creekside in 2013 they've done it this year with a rugged defense surrendering less than 11 points per game they've had 40 quarterback sacks led by their four-star aaron sterling at defensive end aaron sterling when i describe him explosive he comes off the corner he has great hands i mean he has range he can play the run he can rush the passer he is what we call a big time baller today in this game because he can do it all and he's what the college is covered look for him to have a big game today well you look at his offers georgia alabama and tennessee that tells you all you need to do you know it's big time if you're getting a tennessee offer now well george and alabama too yeah we've got a great game for you here tonight between valdosta and tucker the third member of our team he's been here all day since they opened the doors at 7am that's john nelson thank you very much matt good evening to you good evening dr rush and good evening however you are accessing us whether it's gpbtv gpb.org or the gpb sports at yes we know that valdosta played in the game 15 in the early 2000s but let's go to the wayback machine and show you the last time that they won a title it was 1998 henry odua crashes for mckitchen into the end zone to tie it at seven but the rest went to carlos gatlin first touchdown to break the tie he fakes out everybody including the cameraman 14-7 he would score one more time valdosta would win under mike o'brien 21-7 and that's the last championship that valdosta has ever won the number is in dispute 23 or 24 it depends on whether you appreciate the title that was won back in the early 1900s so the question is if you call the valdosta wildcats the new york yankees of georgia high school football or just high school football as i toss it back upstairs to you to light our last football friday candle of the year guys what are the tucker tigers in this matchup are they the boston red sox what do you think well i mean you can make that comparison or maybe the st louis cardinals or another one of those teams that have gotten there and they've won it they just haven't won it as much as valdosta but then again nobody has there's brian lamar in his fifth season as the tucker tigers head coach he's looking for his first state championship as a head coach in five seasons though 55-12 and he's been there for some of those state titles because this is his 11th season at tucker overall you can see coach bryan lamarr has his game face on and alan rodemaker his first season as the valdosta head coach promoted from defensive coordinator it's actually his third year as a head coach he spent two seasons at peach county back in 1999 and 2000 as the head coach the tucker tigers 22-7 winners over northside wanna robins in the semifinals last week valdosta 27-6 winners at dalton in the semifinals last week valdosta won the toss they have deferred they're wearing their black and gold tonight and your heads up georgia opening kickoff don't text and drive distracted drivers take lives and tucker will receive the opening kickoff that's going to be taken at the 2-yard line david davis out across the 35 and the spotting down at the 38 great return by david davis in good field position for the tucker tigers to open this ball game you know when you're just coming up first kickoff kickoff return you want to shake off some of the jitters you know getting used to this dome floor because a lot of these teams don't get a chance to play on field turf so they're used to playing on grass so it's going to be a transition but that's how you want to start here there you see the tucker quarterback the senior xavier shepard 1768 yards passing 17 touchdowns five interceptions and they're gonna go to the air on the first play we're going to go for the home run on the first play josh band out there and josh levine can't make the grab at the 20-yard line chase rogers running in coverage with him step for step and here's a look at tucker on offense look at the right tackle dylan wanham espn 4 star number 16 rated junior offensive tackle in the country with offers from florida ohio state and tennessee among others and in the backfield joshua van who they just threw the ball to 57 catches this year and 13 touchdowns first run of the game for this tucker team that averages nearly 250 yards on the ground that was broadwater got a couple of yards on the plays you look at valdosta on defense defense marshall 62 tackles he's put on 50 pounds since last year to become a college prospect james bush ware their linebacker breakout season 123 tackles and in the secondary jace rogers offered by south florida and then three jalen's beside him three players named jalen in the secondary none of them very big but all of them very active and fast and on third down the run by the tigers and they'll have to punt it nice work by devonta jones number 99 does a good job striking blocks you know tucker comes out takes a shot early he was what the receiver was open the ball was under thrown they come back and try to play a little powerball valdosta recovers from that and does a good job well joshua van will pun he's the wide receiver and the punter and he booms that one fair catch is called for by rogers at the 20-yard line 38-yard kick which is the average for band this season and that's where valdosta will start on offense for the first time tonight it's gonna be a lot of quarterback runs and you know this valdosta offense is built around the two quarterbacks a lot of carry is going to go between them today well the quarterback to start the game will be number four josh belton the 6-1 205 seniors completed 63 of his passes 1190 yards 13 touchdowns six interceptions he's also run for 377 yards and six touchdowns kevin gray gets the first handoff and gray trying to get around the edge and does and kevin gray picks up 13 yards on his very first carry well we know how talented this tucker middle three is but this is what you want to do start early get on the perimeter spread them out a little bit this about the team really fast a lot of speed demons on that offense so first and ten for the wildcats from the 33. look at that they got him spread out four wides traditional spread offense here gray goes in motion so empty backfield they look one way then the other with the screen pass to jr ingram and england picks up about 11 yards on the play here's a look at valdosta on offense graham lloyd and alan three two year starters on that offensive line led by the center lloyd and ingram who just made the grab highlights the backs and the receivers ingram close to 1 000 yards receiving this season and 16 touchdown receptions and gray fumbled the ball at the end of the play the 47 i believe they're gonna say he was down however trey leslie ended up with it but the play was blown dead as we take a look at tucker on defense aaron sterling the espn 4 star number 15 rated senior defensive tackle in the country gary vaughn the outside linebacker team leading 75 tackles eugene brown the pony espn three star he's committed to west virginia gray with the catch up to the 50-yard line pickup of about three on the play for kevin gray well you're going to hear me talk a lot about screens you've already seen two screens within the first six plays that's the foundation of the spread offense and that's what you want to notice tonight these are long handoffs these are these are secure plays that offenses like to use now and it's really something that you're going to see a lot tonight valdosta loves to run screens third down kevin gray first down kevin gray down to the 37-yard line before finally being tackled by malachi buckner the safety well good job by wesley veal downfield blocking an excellent job by the offensive line getting down field but i like this one cut and go he rolls up looks like he might have rolled up on one of his players i think that was veal doing an excellent job blocking downfield well chuck how about the way this valdosta offense is gashing this tucker defense on this opening drive yeah i mean you think about this they've thrown a screen to the left they run two sweeps to the right so when you look at it they're showing great balance they get they have tucker off balance right now first and ten from the 36. rogers first carry for him tonight and rogers picks up about a yard on the play something else to notice matt early on i was watching watching the tucker defense the linebackers is something to keep an eye on they're deep really deep and in the spread what they're trying to do is buy time so they can figure out is it an inside zone is it an outside zone by the wildcats offense it's really something to watch on that last play all three of the linebackers and that base three three came up tighter and they took the dive play so that's something we want to watch second down and nine rogers lost his helmet on that play so he has to come off the field gray play action belton looking downfield and throws and incomplete looking for trey fowler who has only one catch on the entire season they will go to him and it's incomplete third down yeah good job by brian strozier number nine for the tucker for tucker doing an excellent job that time he did two jobs took away the dive and he did a good job of getting pressure strozier's been offered by colorado state and louisville plays three different positions for the tigers middle linebacker defensive end and nose guard a lot of screens going to come out of this set quarterback draws lots of different options you have when you're on when you play a spread third down and nine belton heavy rush being chased has to throw on the run gets it downfield connecting with kevin gray downfield for the touchdown i mean excellent job pressure from the backside i mean this is just i mean he puts this on the money you can't make a better throw than that with pressure upon you excellent job excellent throw great catch that was demerius morrow with the touchdown catch 26 and not 28. it was hard to see up here but 26 demaryius morrow with his fourth touchdown catch and valdosta has a six nothing lead davis baldwin on for the p.a.t and he puts it through so valdosta goes 79 yards on eight plays on their opening possession and josh belton quarterback number one in this two quarterback system gets the touchdown pass to put the wildcats on top the ghsa football championship is made possible in part by regions it's time to expect more georgia's electrical membership cooperative the official energy provider of the ghsa the technical college system of georgia learn more earn more cigna go you heads up georgia and the governor's office of highway safety dot com and viewers like you thank you [Music] to marius morrow with the touchdown catch for valdosta and the wildcats on top seven nothing you should take a look at the wildcats 23 state championships which of course is a state record 888 wins or is it 912 that's a matter for debate so many wins no one can keep up with them all but we do know this it's the most in u.s history 36 region championships the 36th coming this year and then they've had so many great coaches i mean legendary coaches wright bazemore and of course nick heider who was the head coach when you guys went up against it yep and i know someone who doesn't forget one game the one that we lost in 87 down there so i can tell you this we can count it right but anyway you know got a chance to play against a great nick hyder phenomenal i mean this valdosta program i don't think there's a program where the kids have as much pressure on them as any program in the state they're expected to be here and something that nellie said earlier yeah they are the yankees that's how they look at themselves maybe not the new generation of football players around the state because they're younger and they haven't been here but yes they are the cowboys of old they are you know a dynasty they have that kind of tradition of mystique and so i understand the pressure comes along with the championships you know well back in the state championship game for the first time since 2003 but playing a state championship game here in this building for the first time ever they used to have state they didn't have the state championship games here they played plenty of state semifinal games here but never a state championship game and guys when you think about the valdosta wildcat mystique this is stuff that happens in elementary school it's bobcats tomcats and wildcats you learn the system early and chuck as you well know goes from elementary school and by the time you're playing as a wildcat you've got it all down over the head of tori and taylor so the tigers will start their second possession at the 20. it's going to be interesting to see if i let me think about if i'm right now on tucker's offensive side number one you think back to the first play they took a shot the receiver was open the ball was underthrown now the key here is going to be do be who you are i expect coach lamar and his offensive staff to come back run the ball that too tucker is run the ball you know run yeah run that wing t i agree with you totally i mean you come out you took your shot tried to get that quick touchdown now you need to settle in and run the wing t they're set up in the wing tief well actually they're not in the wing t formation right now they do run a jet sweep ball ends up in the hands of joshua van on the wide receiver jet sweep and van picks up about seven or eight yards on the play just the fourth rushing play for van this season well when we talked to coach lamar he talked about what they have they got the power oh and this is the speed sweep this you're going to see a lot of this today i mean they'll have a full back speed sweep to have a wing so it's part of the offense and what they want to do they're a power team they want to run the ball down your throat second down and three chris broadwater is that guy that can run it down your throat he picks up the first down at the 31 and a half broadwater averaging 6.2 yards per carry this year close to 78 yards rushing per game 1088 total 21 touchdowns and has 11 offers including western kentucky air force and army you know broadwater got some broad shoulders i had a chance to meet the young man he's uh he's the focal point he's the focal point of this offense six foot 215 lines up and the slot out there blocking for the wide receiver who just caught the pass up to the 35 yard line that was joshua vann did you see that adjustment nice job by joshua van the ball wasn't quite thrown where it should be nice ball handling here and nice job keeping your eyes on your work here getting the ball because look the corner makes a great play you know anton kincade he does antoine kinkade does a good job jumping on the ball so i mean that could have been an interception second down and six ball at the 36.
[Music] running the sweep nothing doing right there for samuel bryant got dropped for a loss that was james bush ware with the tackle when i saw chris broadwater blocking and looking backwards there's going to be some problems then you know he missed his block he's never good yeah bushways had a breakout season replacing four-year starter todd bradley who's now at georgia southern really kind of built like a safety playing the mike linebacker at 6-1-190 shepard field threw it too high for van and he got hit low and hopefully he's okay solid shot from antoine kincaid yeah he took a helmet to the thighs and could be a thigh bruise but you know nice half roll throws it then set his feet quarterback needs to set his feet that was ugly shot there now you don't like those if you're a wide receiver no boom right on the knee hopefully van is okay xavier shepherd you got to be able to set your feet you gotta that's a tough that's a difficult pass to make throwing on the move like that and van after taking that shot has to punt and by that time he probably got to be glad he didn't punt that could have been a punt block the reps might have saved him that time on the offense five yard penalty here against tucker that's going to back it up to the 27.
[Music] keith hammond's your referee for tonight's ball game well valdosta will have good field position here on offense if everything goes according to plan here yeah rogers standing close to the 45 oh booming kick by vance i guess the knee is okay rogers goes back to get it now he's turning the other direction he's got a wall he does he's got some space across the 40 and a 50. the 45 the 40. and wide receiver and backup corner finally makes the tackle at the 29-yard line that's a 42-yard kick but a 40-yard return well the first thing you notice here and if i'm tucker on special teams we call this elephants on parade when you're on special teams if you watch tucker everybody's running behind each other kind of like little league baseball you know i mean literally football the first time everybody just follows the ball you see here he has a wall but partly that has to do with the with tucker you know i mean you're not supposed to make these kind of plays in the state championship does an excellent job but this has more to do with what tucker's not doing than what valdos valdosta's doing from the 29-yard line belton's still in there he runs it up to the 23 and picks up about nine on the play probably about six on the play all right we talk about this all the time i always talk about the speed of the game right now valdosta's playing a lot faster than tucker i watched the defensive lineman come off the blocks it just seemed like they're not as quick right now are they unsure is it because of what valdosta is doing offensively that they're a little tentative they don't know which way to go yeah yep valdosta came right out executed their offensive plan and hit him right in the mouth tucker's got to respond second down belton lunges forward to the 17-yard line nice job quarterback power guys inside designed to go right inside right where that center is the center does an excellent job nice blocking on that play excellent work zach lloyd number 60 does a great job moving the defensive line off the ball that was one of the keys this this tucker defensive line is stout good job by zach lloyd and that down the line that's gray on the carry down to the 15-yard line [Music] even on that last play you might not notice this number 55 jaden green he's when the whistle is blowing the whistle as soon as the whistle blows he stops blocking they're out working tucker if you watch number 55 just keep your eyes on him he pulls look at this he's not going to stop he's going he's going he's still finishing look at that he knocks him out of the picture that's what you want to do they're finishing they're playing at a different pace right now than tucker second down from the 14 rogers gets it going to the boundary touchdown jace rogers 14-yard touchdown run but a flag down on the field it looks like a hold [Applause] holding during the run ten yards from the spot of foul repeat second down so watch kevin gray the running back on this play number 28 he's out there on the edge blocking for jace rogers and that is what you call holding he throws his hands out like he didn't hold you know that is a dead giveaway anytime you throw your hands up in the air when do you throw your hands up in the air in real life i'm guilty don't shoot i'm holding his hands up you know that you know that's the way it is i mean you you immediately you know confess your guilt when you throw your hands up in the air like that on a play third down and nine ball is at the 17. what an amazing grab by j.r ingram and valdosta tucker here in the first quarter you know they caught that pass right there matt that's just called go get it fade pass nice job of course by the quarterback does an excellent job throwing the ball gets it where your receiver can catch it i mean excellent work excellent work there now tucker's reeling right now 13 to nothing as davis baldwin is on for the p-a-t 14 to nothing mission take a look at your tcsg touchdown replay well i like josh belton sets his feet the quarterback but look at this i'm an excellent catch he goes and gets the ball we call that a go get it there is no there is no technique for that that's all about willpower go get it you got great coverage great coverage by tucker they're a man-to-man team so they had man-to-man coverage nice job here by josh belton number four getting the ball up and the receiver goes and just makes an incredible play ingram with his 17th touchdown grab of the season as you take a look at valdosta's 23 state championships by the decade seven of them coming in the 1960s they had three in the 1990s their last was in 1998 we had video of that in their victory against aj suggs the former tennessee volunteer who went on to play at georgia tech and was the starting quarterback for mckitchen that year uh ingram makes an incredible catch but you know his nickname is junior so you know down in valdosta right now saying look at junior not looking so junior is he nah man he's junior he looks looks like a great player he does a great job i mean he's had a phenomenal season coach rydermaker couldn't talk i mean just the accolades and everything he said he's receiving now all the all county all the things he's receiving i mean he deserves it you know and he's got the nice hair too man he might get the game ball for the hair with the water all on it right now scout team tight end last year as a junior didn't even get on the field and you know coach rademaker told us he always had the great body but he's just now starting to hit the peak of what he is going to be as a football player man and boys are on the hunt right now valdosta is on the hunt i know buck baloo is down there celebrating the georgia legend former valdosta wildcat excited about it but they're hunting right now a nine-yard return and you know he they're just getting they're just getting down field that was a great kick you got to give davis baldwin a lot of credit too got a lot of hair under that allows his coverage team to get down there and by the time he caught that ball they were already inside the 20. and that that's what you covet when you're on special teams i mean it's a plus anytime you get the ball you kick it and you stop them inside the 20. it's a plus keeper by shepard oh man he got jacked up at the 11 yard line [Applause] zacoby mclean who's their highest rated prospect on this team with five offers from south carolina wisconsin and nebraska alan rodemaker got on his defense even after the first possession when they held tucker he said focus on the little things read your keys i think they've been doing a good job of that so far no real panic so far on the tucker sideline handoff goes to davis and david davis up to the 20-yard line he's going to be about a yard and a half short of the first down probably one of the first if not the first positive play really for tucker good job inside this is what tucker wants to do they want to run the ball they double double both of the defensive tackles for valdosta they want to go downhill that was quintessential wing t offense right there how about the block thrown by the halfback samuel bryant on that play that's a first down run right there for broadwater as he nearly broke it there broadway out to the 28 yard line in a first down yeah the tucker offense right now you got to just calm yourself do what you do best and what they do best is running in between the tackles with broad water and when you're in a game like this you can't get out of your offense you can't flinch you're both championship caliber teams tucker's just got to take a deep breath and say let's just go to work yeah i think that's the key for the tigers is not to panic being down two touchdowns davis on the carry he picks up three up to the 30. valdosta they're running the base four man front they have a four they're running a even front four down lineman so anytime you get a chance to play against a team that's basically playing with two tight ends and that's what tucker's playing with what you're going to see now valdosta is bringing they got four down linemen they're bringing both their outside linebackers on the edges and they're vising everything what they want to do is vice every they want to force tucker to run inside second down and seven a minute to play here in the first quarter and there's that vice action again forcing bryant back inside well we talked about device you see the outside linebacker lined up here he's going to force everything inside and that's exactly what they want to do it's is really important for that to happen that's what antoine kincaid is supposed to do he wants to squeeze everything it's called a vice just like when you squi what a vice a real vice does you want to squeeze everything force everything inside so that's why tucker is going to have to make some plays with their arm the quarterbacks have to make some plays with his arm but they've got to figure out some way to get on the perimeter you saw number one antoine kincaid he's coming on the blitz they run away from it and separate flows downfield short for his tight end cameron richardson like xavier shepard if you on the replay you'll see he doesn't follow through he just kind of flicks it he's got to follow through see that he just kind of shovels it you got to follow through you got to chromebay say crowmate with your thumb down your thumb has to be down when you finish when you're a quarterback when you're throwing the ball or the ball is going to do what great point yeah it's going to be short yeah he's short yeah drift he just snapped it you're right he's not following through that's just kind of a snap throw [Music] and it's fourth down and tucker's having a punt again van punting for the third time in this game another booming kick let's see if tucker does a better job of coverage this time jase rogers has to call a fair catch and makes it following a 43-yard kick by joshua levan with eight seconds to play in this quarter you know we've been comparing valdosta all these legendary dynasties i just when i just looked that last time we forgot a dynasty and we i named dallas shame on me we talked about pros we talked about the yankees this is the pittsburgh steelers yeah the i mean the winningest football black black and gold and that's the better comparison they got that kind of history remember in the old days it was cincinnati moeller and valdosta in our in my day they were like the big time national powers right could be the final play of the quarter belton they set up the screen and gray got swiped down with a nice open field tackle by the tigers and gary vaughan on the final play of the quarter nice job by vaughn that one could have went some places but what a quarter it was and not for the tucker tigers those guys in black and gold right there two touchdowns the touchdown pass from belton tomorrow and then he did it again this time going to england and wintersville valdosta on top 14 nothing after one when you're in control of your finances i just feel like you're in control of your future when we were 56th win as a head coach tonight and his first state championship he has just won in a long line of great coaches that have come through tucker high school franklin stevens won two state titles there bill ballard phil lindsey keith malouth who's at mark ross and was the head coach for brian lamarr when lamar played for the tigers back in the 90s and mike fallure as well great family tree there and you know tucker you know they're big time man and their program that's really come out of years ago they came out of nowhere i remember like all of a sudden tucker's just kicking butt yeah but if you go over and see their feeder system i'm just telling fitzgerald field in that area i mean the tucker tucker tigers ain't going nowhere coach lamar has built the program as one of the best in the state and coach lamar will join us up in the booth here tomorrow for the benedict and fitzgerald double a state championship he'll be doing color with us on that game belton still in their quarterback goes to england this might go they've got the numbers out there and finally drugged down by jalen jefferson jefferson saved the touchdown there they had it set up to go yep and we talked about the screen screen number three now here that i'm counting excellent job guys this is a long handoff this is a play that hits the foundation of the spread offense for valdosta does an excellent job getting the ball out of his hands and you know he gets the ball in his hands you know how electrifying he is they were one block from that thing going the entire way 26 yards on the pickup to the 49. keeper belton this is a tucker tigers defense that was given up only 206 yards per game chuck they gave up 114 in the first quarter well they are because number one they're not getting off blocks but i thought belton was the quarterback that had the good arm he's running the ball with effectiveness and i'll tell you this it starts up front well he has thrown two touchdown passes that's true he's doing he's doing everything he's doing everything right now he's the hot qb right now yep first and ten ball at the 22. that's gray in motion up to the top a dying diamond throw formation up there and the run by belton and they get him on the ground that was terrell paxton number 56 making the tackle after a couple of yards on the play i really love the spread they had trips to the right three receivers the running back goes in motion they fake another screen and the quarterback does a quarterback draw i mean on you you got to be almost you got to almost think so fast when you're a defender now to figure it out you do i mean it's so confusing man it really is the offensive coordinator tucker pruitt is calling a fantastic game belton down to the 15 yard line he gets four on the play tucker pruitt has called an offense this year that's averaging just under 35 points per game and over 328 yards of offense and they're well on their way to blowing that number out of the water tonight and i'd like to see tucker now on defense i'd like to say hey you got to take the quarterback out of the game you got to i mean he can't he can't throw for touchdowns and run also so on the running plays you got to make sure that someone accounts for the quarterback i expect coach lamar and that defensive staff to make those adjustments or it's going to be a long day for him third down and four are you thinking another screen here or a jet sweep something like that yep i think a big inside dive keeper belton gonna throw in the run and intercept it tyler oglesby comes up with a pick at the goal line to keep valdosta out of the end zone and get the ball back in the tigers hands first pick of the season for oglesby and chuck it might be the biggest pick of their season well nice job by tyler oglesby does a good job right then valdosta is running a skinny post that's a skinny post demarius morrow's run he goes 10 yards and he slants inside he was lined up as the inside receiver there were two to that side he runs a skinny post excellent jump on the route and let me just tell you what that was that was a playmaker saying we cannot go down 21-0 took an excellent risk there but it paid off handoff goes to broadwater runs into his offensive time and bumps him out of the way oglesby what a story he is in fact both of the corners for the tucker tigers this year oglesby and mckinney were starting jv corners at the beginning of the year they lost keith best one of their top players one of their top corners in dekalb county in the atlanta area lost him to a second knee injury dion watkins was dismissed from the team and they ended up with oglesby and mckinney two jv corners starting for them and that's what's making it more surprising to me while valdosta is able to run on them because remember this tucker teams they're playing man-to-man they're playing man-to-man so that means you got four guys covering man you got seven in the box to stop valdosta so you know it's gonna be a challenge but we'll get back to that when valdos is back on offense and tucker's on defense but this tucker offense they got to do something got to do something but i mean they got 11 players within the hashes you know the two hashes on the field so again it's going to make it easier for valdosta to vice this tucker offense they have to figure out a way to hit the edge they're not going to be able to bang broadwater in the middle every time handoff goes to the halfback nothing doing for david's david davis zaccobi mclean is there and shaking his head he stopped him in his tracks and it's fourth down nice job by zakov mclean does a good job shoots the gap again there's a crack in the wall for the tucker offensive line the kobe mclean number seven does a good job of slipping that little crack that's all it takes offers from south carolina wisconsin and nebraska among his five offers he's just a junior with 16 tackles for loss on the season fourth down and van punting for the fourth time another rainbow shot fair catch called for by rogers at the 47 yard line and so the wildcats will start on the tucker side of the 50 following a 34-yard kick well pressure more pressure for the tucker defense they got to make a play you know right now you got valdos playing on that side of the field and it wouldn't surprise me to see valdosta come out and throw the ball they've had success to come out and throw the ball work the edges i'm expecting them to keep going with the screen passes they've had three screens they've had a lot of success because anytime you play man-to-man again you still got what you got guys that are man up so it makes it easier to throw a screen we'll see how tucker makes an adjustment on that but expect valdosta to keep running that screen and keep working the edges josh belton still in there at quarterback there's the screen set up for morrow and this time tucker is able to diagnose it and read it well jaylen jefferson making the stop out there on the edge two yard pickups good job by jefferson also antonio showers does a good job number 14. it's going to be important that's and anytime you're a screen team something else we want to notice how much effort is tucker going to give to these screens that's the number four screen because it takes an entire defense to play against the screen game second down and eight ball at the 45 gray in motion they look his way they're going to run the tunnel screen ends up in the hands of ingram and he is tackled downfield by gadsden in close to the first down i know i sound like a broken record even though these kids have never seen a record screen screen number five again that's what valdosta is going to do because again any time you played man-to-man we talked about you got tucker they have seven defenders in the box trying to stop the run yeah that ball was detected yeah at the line of scrimmage that was gary vaughn watch this deflect it and you know things are going right deflected by vaughn at the line of scrimmage and still ends up going for positive yards and a first down at the 37-yard line on the catch by ingram nothing doing on the hand off the grill you know i think i got something for is here i was thinking about that you know kids don't know what a broken record is but they do know what a broken phone screen is i know so instead of instead of as old folks saying it's a broken record we'll just tell them it's a it's a broken uh iphone right they just know about they get those they don't know about it they don't know the broken record to download your ipad is messed up your iphone's cracked yep belton throws complete to the 34-yard line and morrow with the catch he's already got a touchdown catch in this ball game and maro was close to the first down at the 28-yard line well let me tell you two things that don't work for defense no pressure no coverage yeah you got no pressure on the quarterback no coverage so what's happening right now we talked about this a minute ago valdosta should throw the ball let me know work the edges keep working the screens good job on the slant route they had three receivers to the right tucker is off balance completely right now they have no idea what's going on third down and one just inside the 29. gelatin gonna keep it and not pick up the first down nice play by jalen jefferson the pony he's just a sophomore they think he's going to be a really good player college prospect eventually well yeah coach lamar talked about him and he does a good job great job making a play there coming downhill and you know and that's what you need you got to your playmaker's got to make plays anytime you're in a game like this and it's just really important nice job by jalen jefferson making that play he's got a bright future fourth down and two and the wildcats going for it from near tucker 29 toss goes to gray and gray gonna throw a pass down field wide open wesley veal had a touchdown oh my goodness i mean that thing was executed to perfection until it got to the hands of wesleyville what a play what a break for tucker i mean he throws this thing in traffic i mean gary vaughan is taking him to the ground and he delivered the ball downfield and wesley veal let it go right through his hands wow will valdosta live to regret that one right now they're in control but a big break for tucker with 5 26 to play in the half every tv doctor knows when preparing for surgery use an overpronounced washing technique for dramatic effect [Music] they also know you need to get your annual checkup [Music] now prepare for your checkup with one touch using the my cigna app where you can find a doctor in your plan's network to save money manage your health and more need to be thorough cigna together all the way across 91 counties george's cotton industry employs over 15 000 people with more than 3 000 georgia farmers that bring cotton into our everyday lives when life turns up the heat and the pressure makes you sweat there's one sure way to cool down for those glory moments on and off the court cotton is with you for the win cotton the natural choice for georgia here in the first half valdosta on top 14 to nothing it should be 21 to nothing he just they just sent a gift back to the shop without unwrapping it yeah tucker dodges the bullet look at the excellent design play call no offensive lineman actually one goes downfield but for the most part excellent design by valdosta's offense none of the offensive lineman gave a clue by going down field excellent job tevin gray making the excellent throw and you know the young man just didn't get it but the point is though just you got it and then you got to have thick skin in this game yeah i remember when i when i worked with the jets rex ryan would say you got to have skin thick as armadillo even though armadillo doesn't have skin you get that they you gotta have thick skin when you don't make a good play you got to come back and just recover and just do what you got to do shepard gonna go for the home run streaking downfield as joshua van and overthrows well you feel bad for the kid wesley feel that's for sure that's a nightmare but hopefully he'll get a chance to redeem himself in this game yep nice coverage there by number five jace rogers one of the self one of the described by coach rodemaker as one of the midgets said i got four midgets back there but they're fast though rogers five nine harrell is five eight and they run four four forty so makes up for it big run as he's rumbling down field across the 40. eric simmons makes the tackle downfield but they unleash big old chris broadwater for the big run 16-yard pickup yep double-double here everybody on offensive line blocking down good job running and what i like to see there tucker's receivers blocking downfield locking down field and this is gonna be a bang bang game you know we're gonna bang him in the middle and you just saw tucker's not afraid to take a shot 54 blakey anderson or blake jefferson pardon me to center through a big block downfield too and that's a big hit right there by bushwear who's bushwhacked no he didn't bushwhack him he what he died out of him okay man we've been saying that i'm not is a nice little pop you know where the guy has to get up and spin his shoulder pads around and his helmet is turned sideways you know he's looking at his hole right second down and ten [Applause] low snap shepard picks it up throws complete the van gotta beat a man not gonna do it chase rogers textbook tackle drops him for a loss back at the 41. well i don't know about his description of his size by coach ryden maker but on that play he was about six foot eight i don't know that play he's super tall anytime the ball comes to the side but knight does a nice job on this on that tunnel screen getting up field that's what you're supposed to do you got to beat the block he beat the inside receiver and textbook tackle he wrapped up his legs and lifted his feet off the ground when you lift the runners feet off the ground they're going to go down they're going to end up on their face shepard crawls complete at the 37 yard line shepard stuck it in a tight window and a big time catch 20-yard pickup well shepherd makes his throat but i you know he does a good job setting his feet and that's what you want to do quarterback set your feet get your shoulders in the direction of where you want to throw fire the ball he finishes with his thumb down that's what you want to do at quarterback that's the kind of throws that he needs to make today to have a big game malachi buckner the safety in on offense made that grab now i'm not big on rolling against you throwing motion to the short side of the field that you get a penalty call there start on the offense five yard penalty yes i've never been a big fan of rolling against the quarterback's throwing motion unless you've got one heck of a quarterback like peyton manning maybe like a guy like that maybe matt ryan yeah a guy that can do it yeah you know and so you but the point is here i like the fact also that the offense of tucker they're trying to be more creative good job making the play on that last pass by xavier shepard the senior quarterback does a good job setting his feet keeping his composure because they've gotten some breaks here they're only down 14. get a touchdown you're still in this game so it's a lot of ball to be played that was offensive coordinator todd rick malone there talking to shepard on the sideline first and 15 shepherd scrambling running for his life eludes the man steps out of bounds at the 34-yard line shepard bought some time and picked up some yards and now it's going to be third down excellent coverage by valdosta there was no place for the quarterback to throw the ball i mean valdosta did a good job there playing cover two all the zones are covered there's nowhere for them to go and the quarterback has to take off there's no room for xavier shepard there's nothing there's nothing open excellent job valdosta well who do they have out there the only wide receiver i saw was number three joshua vann i didn't see anybody in the picture well that was a world receiver route then shepard jump pass throws it to grab water broadwater going down at the 31 yard line antoine concave there on the tackle that's worked by kincaid that play was a little slow developing [Music] that time you see that time valdosta they slanted to the right and that was right in the direct area where they wanted to throw a screen that was a screen pass that he ended up having to do a jump throw and pass with because valdosta was in the way kincaid got him low it was maxwell who hit him in the middle knocked him down it's going to be third down now from the 31. shepard got a block out there almost pitched by rogers and he might have picked sixed it if he'd held on to him again i'm not a big fan of young quarterbacks rolling to the sideline against their throwing motion to me this is this is just it's hard to have any accuracy you know because you're throwing to get your natural throwing motion that pass had an opportunity to be a touchdown see for the wrong team for the wrong team that's that's a tough throw to make again but again they've worked on this in practice so i'm not being critical from that standpoint obviously they can do it but it's a challenge when you're struggling right now to throw the ball down to two minutes to play in the half it's fourth down and four the tigers going for it at the wildcats 31 one wide receiver they're going to try to run for the first down and not get anywhere close davis david lost yardage on the play chuck they had one wide receiver going to try to run that four yards on fourth down i don't know how much chance of success they had for that thing well i'm gonna tell you we need to highlight jalen temple number 21 does a good job the blogger comes out trying to block he does an excellent job boom excellent job vicing and making the running back go inside look that time that was designed to go outside excellent job by jalen temple does a great job the senior cornerback squeezes everything you gotta vise it weisset doing a good job right now valdosta belton still in there at quarterback we've only seen one quarterback today from the wildcats that was fowler had it go off his hands it's going to be second down and 10. see i'm a little i'm better with that i like that maybe that comes from playing defense it's easier to get a quarterback against his natural throwing motion that time he's right-handed he rolled to the right made an excellent throw did belton yeah the receiver dropped it you know you can be a lot more accurate i believe personally throwing two rolling to the field throwing to the field and your natural throwing motion and you can get more on it if you got to get the ball downfield you got more power on that they run to the short side and kevin gray gets shoved out of bounds at the 38-yard line he picked up about seven on that run you know gray back this year didn't get a chance to play with the team and coach rodemaker said he worked his tail off to get back in with the program and he has had a tremendous season been a model citizen after not getting a chance to play last year as a junior he's balling right now 38 yards on six carries for gray in this ball game he also has a couple of catches for 38 yards third down and five belton going up top and threw it too far ingram the target and it's gonna be fourth down that was the first time we really had we did not see the wildcats in sync on offense yeah you're exactly right and i call that that's like to me that was a lazy series where nothing got done they kind of looked like they were just trying to figure it out fourth down and they've lined up to go for it in their own end it's fourth down this is just a lack of respect i was getting ready to tell you they certainly and now they're going to have a flag that's going to be illegal substitutions no offsides is the call against tucker oh maybe when the uh when the punt team when the offense left the field somebody jumped off sides to take a look at that five yard penalty and that'll be the first in the first down man that was well designed i mean again i don't know if the intention was to get him to jump but it worked watch tucker does duggar jump offside when they start moving well yeah he who was offsides though i don't know if we have a side angle brian strozier takes a step but to me it really looked like he was offsides but again this is design i mean give valdosta a lot of credit give ryden maker a lot of credit that's coaching you know but again you know pass complete ingram down to the 44-yard line so the new life following the penalty against tucker moves the sticks and the wildcats in tucker tiger territory again well slant pass right here good job you got receiver running the nice slant pass and quarterback getting it to him doing a good job belton throws and it is caught they got a foot down that's a completion at the 40-yard line four yard pickup to gray if i'm tucker i'm going back into a zone i'm gonna start playing like a cover two emma and that basically rushing forward i'm putting all my guys in coverage right now they're hitting them with the slants but they keep bringing a linebacker every time and that's where valdos is finding those easy passes at second down and six plenty of time on the play clock you see the receiver to the right inside the quarterback can snap it right now and run the slant pass and he'd have them belton missed tomorrow morrow on a short crossing route underneath the linebacker line and they couldn't connect now it's gonna be third down i mean it looks like almost like a little bit of a jailbreak i'm gonna tell you there's something that i think tucker should also do and this is something that and great defensive backs and great coverage team do you got to put your hands on these receivers a little bit i ain't seeing all i'm seeing is a lot of free release the the valdosta receivers aren't being hit they aren't being checked they're not being pressed you can't it's called don't give them a free release i mean everybody's getting a free release i mean the inmates are breaking out i mean the receivers are rolling right now third and six belton quick slam complete tomorrow and that's gonna be a first down at the 33-yard line just way too much pushing right way too much cushion i mean they're getting a free release as you see right here look at the wide receiver is going to catch up top he's going to go he didn't even touch i mean this is this is 707 man this is what valdosta did all summer screen set up for mauro over on the other side this time tomorrow weaves his way manson popping down there as he gets tackled at the 28-yard line time-out call by rademaker and valdosta i believe yeah they did call the timeout that's the first one that they've used here in the half another screen screen number six this was kind of a thigh out right here yeah that's a thigh out that was a thigh nice run but you know the screens are setting everything up with the screens working them on the outside but we just talked about the free release it ain't you just got to try to get your hands on them nelly what's going on bro well down here the biggest thing that tucker pruitt has tried to tell the offense is after that first mistake don't worry about it it's gone so just focus on what's been happening with us and don't get wrapped up in the past just focus on doing the little things right and it seems to be the message across the board for a team that has won a lot of games this year on defense at least offensively right now it's focus on what you're doing focus on the short stuff find your holes find your advantages and you're seeing it right now natalie from the speed of the game down there where you're at i mean valdosta just seems to be playing at just a lot quicker right now they are and i'll grant you that one dr rush and what you have with valdosta right now is a court is the quarterback that's going to be the passing quarterback when you want to take the air out of the football that's when you'll see hunter holt valdosta 226 yards of offense that's 20 yards more than tucker averages giving up per game going up top and tied up dante baker the tight end first time they've targeted him and he had no receiving space out there and now it's going to be third down all right now good job tucker's made the adjustment they went to a zone they had the cornerback was up tight getting his hands on him they had a safety over the top playing a cover two defense playing zone good job that also helped them on the running plays it's a big third down conversion right here he's gonna roll to the right let's run it right up the middle on the inside reed and he gets stopped shy of the sticks at the 26 yard line it's gonna be fourth down and two clock continues to run neither team has burned the timeout here valdosta two remaining and tucker three of course tucker they have no reason to burn a timeout they want to have to end this is the what is this the third or fourth fourth down i went for i don't really understand what valdosta is doing here unless they're gonna run it all the way down and try a field goal i think that's the yeah they've decided they're gonna try field goal here that's what they're gonna do they're gonna run the clock all the way down as far as they can and they can run it all the way down without the uh the play clock and they'll burn a timeout because ryden maker first year has done a heck of a job i'm sure that wouldn't be a problem but that was not a problem after they beat lowndes 38-13 in the season opener he said that was huge as far as propelling this team to where they are here tonight playing for the state championship he said more than anything him being a first year head coach and beating lounge so badly in the season opener in the in the wintersville classic he said it gave wildcats fans reassurance that the program was on solid ground in fact when rona maker first got there as an assistant coach right with with uh rance gillespie you know he said he talked to some of the old coaches like coach rudolph and those guys and they said you know what it's probably more important to beat lounge than it is to win the state championship and that's a good point because because you know locally that's their rivals and their rivals have been winning championships over the last decade you know so good stuff there good stuff lowndes has three state titles since valdosta won their last but the wildcats are here tonight going for championship number 24. baldwin on for the field goal this is a 44-yard kick and it is money number 45 kicks it 44 and valdosta has 17. looks like uh maybe the tucker lions were the team that had the three-hour drive wow what a half for the valdosta wildcats as they are 24 minutes away from the state title down to nelly thank you very much here with the coach all right as a defensive guy obviously a great source of pride in that first half that's what's gotten you the wins all year yeah well i thought points would be at a premium tonight and we're playing good defense and but i'm proud of our offense when we got down there we've scored points and that was a big kick for us and at the same time though you're proud of the offense and they shook off the pick that josh threw and have continued to roll so far yeah i mean that helped us really big field position wise we gave up a couple big plays but i think we got him correct but our offense got to keep playing because wingman took her out i don't think thanks for your time all right thank you alan rodemaker he's up he's got the first 24 minutes or his he's got 24 to go before valdosta gets that next state championship the halftime show officially starts right now thank you very much john nelson pretty action-packed first half i know and it's funny because coach rodemaker was telling us this week he's like i'd be surprised if this game gets in the 30s just because of the defense that we're seeing out there on the field but so far getting 14 on the board pretty good all right it's halftime the class 6a state championship game we'll hear from both the tucker and valdosta marching bands and believe me both are fantastic plus we'll get you up to date on for are you smarter holiday edition john it is time for the holiday edition of course naturally this time of year i'm in the principal's office so what's going on at tucker these days well i'm very proud of our students this year we've gotten off to a great start last year class 2016 had a 90 grad rate so very proud of the kids and the staff and what we've been able to achieve all right time to play the game that is sweeping the dome itself for the last time so let's go ahead and give the question it is who wrote and performs the holiday song with these lyrics tell your friend veronica that it's time for hanukkah is it a the beastie boys b adams uh b randy newman or c adam sandler i'll say c that is correct because it is the hanukkah song i see i almost did it in lyric so sandler first unwrapped the gift on saturday night live the song was later expanded into a movie called eight crazy nights with some content not suitable for youngins so tell your friend veronica that it's time for hanukkah i did it in rhythm thanks for hanging out appreciate it one principle down one to go when it comes to are you smarter guys thank you john big part of the padded tree of high school football is listening into the marching band so let's listen into the tucker tiger marching band brought to you by regions bank so so great job by the tucker high school marching band brought to you by regions bank and the crowd fired up for this one yeah i mean it all day long it's just gotten increasingly increasingly bigger in here i love the dome because it keeps all that noise inside so it feels like it's on fire in here it's electric for sure and we got a big crowd on hand for this and when we come back after this time out of the gpb championship game halftime show we'll hear from the valdosta youngest man in high school football he's the author of five books two on high school football in the great state of georgia breaking down john's georgia brought to you by georgia's emc's and you're gonna check out glen academy of school who made the championship game last year but really had to battle not only the opposition but the weather and everything else hurricane airmen and hurricane matthew we're going to spend some time in slash pine emc and tell you about one of the stars that we're going to lose once the season is over here in 2016 dj dallas and glenn academy the red terrors only seven teams got to end the season the way they wanted in 2015 glenn academy is still chasing after a title after their loss in the 5a championship to aletuna red terror dj dallas was clamped down on injured and contained flat out not happy when we when we got like after december 13th was the date of the state championship game and then after that like i went into like a state of depression kinda like i was just kind of mad and i put like the loss on myself and like now like we're ready like we're ready to go so as another senior state standout it's a chance to redeem even after losing the season opener to benedictine and getting clamped down on again and figure out how to improve even further i think for him you know obviously he's playing quarterback for us so you know in at the end of the day he's gonna he's gonna play on saturday either in the secondary or or catch footballs but you know for us the thing with dj is he's working on being the best quarterback he can be and he's working on improving his his passing game and he's gotten a lot better playing quarterback wasn't completely foreign to dj he did pick it up but there's still a lot for this athlete to do all around well last year i did play a little bit of quarterback um bradwell game i played like two or three snaps and like those three plays i scored so i was just like i feel like i can do it so when coach rock put me there the richmond hill game i i was just like yeah let's do it and it didn't it didn't take me long like i was getting used to throwing the ball again but it didn't take me long to get adjusted to just playing quarterback coach rock has been able to do for the red terrors down there at glen academy we get to lose dj dallas one of the great senior players and for the life of me mark you know where he's going to school i i can't fizz i'm physically incapable of doing that as a florida state grad i cannot connect my hands to where he's going to school well let me show you how mark rick does it he does it just like that okay so that's mark rick that's not me as a florida state grad i cannot do this under any circumstance anything orange blue or green i have issues well he's going to do a great job down there for no question about it we're looking forward to him at the next level really a terrific young man indeed when you get to go into these towns when you get to go catch up with folks in brunswick when you get to go to the coast as we did multiple times this year for multiple reasons you get to see a lot of just great kids and how they're being raised by their coaches their communities and their parents and dj is an example of one of those that we've seen this season dj good luck at the you yeah mark can do that i can't i'm not a big fan of miami either but anyway well yeah i was gonna say i had the chance to talk to him during the off season and then knew how hard he took that loss and he was on a mission this year but no matter what he's up to college and beyond he's a great kid he'll succeed at whatever so anyway it is time to head back up to the booth with matt stewart and big chuck smith for the second half of our class 6a state championship final between tucker and valdosta but first we are going to send things to the tcsg career play of the game and we'll see you at the trophy presentation i've always wanted to be a nurse i'm getting the clinical training i need with credits that may transfer and my tuition is free there are a lot of programs in georgia's technical colleges to choose from and i found the one that was right for me at the place that really cares for it and supports me the technical college system of georgia creating a better future for you and for georgia hi folks vince miller from milton martin honda in gainesville we want to wish all the teams in the state playoffs the very best of luck and if you think milton martin honda is a proud sponsor of georgia high school athletics you got that right [Music] [Music] so when you're in control of your finances i just feel like you're in control of your future when we were getting ready to open the business we shopped around a couple different banks but when we went to regions they treated us the best the customer service is i mean amazing our region's banker stacy has great advice for the business and our personal finances they walk in they treat you right it makes you just want to keep going back we're ready to take our next step [Music] at 60 miles per hour you go the length of a football field in five seconds but would you do it blindfolded when you text and drive that's what happens heads up georgia texting and driving is against the law [Music] i think it's important to never forget where you're from my journey started here this was kindergarten through fifth grade i was here i was in this exact library you know for me to come back here and share that and show these kids now i'm no different you know i walk the same hallways use the same bathrooms i think if you dream big and you know this there's no barrier to what you can do [Music] it should be one way of a football game tonight [Applause] welcome back to the georgia dome getting ready for the third quarter here valdosta leading tucker in the 6a championship game by the score of 17 to nothing here with tucker tigers head coach brian lamar let's start things off defensively look like they were getting chunks out of the screen game what'd you talk about with at the half yeah we got to do a better job of reading screens and doing a good job of chasing our guys uh playing a little softer on the edges than we should be so got to chase guys and do a better job on screens and then offensively they were clamping down early but then as the half went on in the first half you seem to be getting stuff with broadwater in them yeah i mean we started moving the ball we had some opportunity we missed a couple of shots we felt like you know we had some big plays in the passing game and we're just you know a little bit off right now so got to get going in the second half got half the play to try to win the championship all right go get him all right buddy all right brian lamarr head coach of the tucker tigers he's getting ready for his second half let's end it upstairs to matt and dr rush for highlights and stuff that's the official term all right yeah thank you nelly you know tucker gives up only 206 yards total offense per game valdosta had 230 on him in the first half right and josh belton the quarterback number four did a dynamic job running the ball and throwing and you know what's really impressive of what he's doing he's leading the offense he's showing energy but he's also getting them in the right place let's look at the highlights and it started early very first drive that was 79 yards for the touchdown well i mean it's phenomenal run here and i mean it starts here you see the effort you see the running back doing an excellent job and the throw on the run here by belton for the touchdown tomorrow was just spectacular well belton we talked about his play-making ability he does a good job running with running and throwing the ball second touchdown was set up by a big punt return poor coverage by tucker 40-yard return by jace rogers well jace rogers did an excellent job returning this punt here but i'm gonna tell you also he's done a fantastic job at corner he has four tackles on the day and the catch in the end zone by j.r ingram spectacular great job by ingram when you get man defense by tucker that you got to take a shot good fast but at the half davis baldwin drill the 44 yard field goal and you see the numbers they've almost tripled them up in total yards well tucker's got to wake up i mean they got to figure it out and here's the thing that's really interesting to me matt we know that they run the spread also but they've been in the wing t and showing a lot of power looks you know two tight ends two backs it's maybe time for them to transform right transform back into the spread and let's see if that does better for the offense of the tucker tigers only four first downs for the tigers in that first half and to make matters worse for tucker valdosta will be receiving the second half kickoff so already with a three score lead and a chance to add to it here as they start the third quarter with the ball in their hands well i expect tucker to come out fast i mean they better come out awake because if i'm let me think like valdosta should think and i know how they're coaches thinking coach rydermaker let's put our foot on their chest let's bury him let's try to go up here get a touchdown and make this almost impossible for an offense that struggles to throw the ball you know and we talked a little bit about talked about that with with tucker and we talked about that with coach lamar the ability for them to throw and he said they they were improved yeah but i got to see it on the field right now throw the ball clearly is one of the reasons why they're struggling to get first downs and chuck right now down 17 nothing they can still run themselves back into this game by playing solid defense but they fall down 24 to nothing i don't know that they can run themselves back into the game they got to find a passing game and you make a great point they got to find a passing game and something else you just talked about from a defensive standpoint i need to see some energy they got to create a turnover and what great effort does for a defense when you see guys running to the ball you always hear me describe i need 22 swinging arms to the ball that's how you create turnovers tucker has to run to the ball to create some turnovers to try to get back in this game versus valdosta second half kickoff is brought to you by heads up georgia don't text and drive distracted drivers take lives yeah i was kind of distracted by nelly today nelly geed up nice tie fresh suit nelly is that a new suit new tire come on man no this is an officially sanctioned patty nelson wardrobe and she had she wanted to go he wants she wanted me to go with the double green today so we went with the doubles she hey she knows good to know good to know that you think this is cheated up because man i have a big teacher in you trying to figure it all out brother save your double green for the 7a game grayson and roswell tomorrow i like that too and i like mark's look too mark got the christmas tie going he does he's yuletide jackie got her leather on hey mad at y'all looking sharp today crew we looking sharp adam lippy gonna kick off for the tucker tigers said he's gonna blast this one uh into the end zone non-returnable so valdosta will start their first possession of the second half at the 20-yard line i don't know if i like that rule about now i'm a kickoff return guy you know pretty much now because of the concussions and the you know taking away the physicalness of the game i understand you know now when the ball's in the end zone you can't return it but to me that's just a part of the game you got to have kick returns i would like to see him go to the college rule but no one's asked me but i like the college rule that you know it goes into the end zone if you don't bring it out right 25 right makes you makes you think about it a little bit that's right there you go so first and ten for the wildcats from the 20-yard line belton has gone all the way at quarterback and gray goes in motion to the top of the screen and dalton's going to run it on the very first play and dalton's going to get about five yards so a solid start to the third quarter very interesting chuck we started this game talking about their two quarterback system i haven't seen it well you know what coach rodenberger said whoever's got the hot hand is going to be the one to lead us and belton hasn't cooled off yet has he his hand is it ain't hot it's inferno it's it's volcanic volcanic er i mean it's burning up ether second down and five ball at the 25. gonna hand off to jace rogers and roger's gonna pick up four up to the 29 bring up a third down and one well big you know big down here for tucker you know you got to figure it out you've you want to get go three and out because in the locker room coach lamar when he gave a speech i can tell you this what he said let's go out let's give him three downs let's make him punt let's get the ball back let's put some points on the board this is a big down here third down and one from the 29 first down kerry right there got just enough across the 30-yard line to pick up the first that was a good run good good movement they looks like they had unbalanced to the right here valdosta took a shot too belton comes up grimacing sticking his mouthpiece in his helmet i've been seeing that a lot too lately kids and high school kids this year everybody's putting their helmets in the hole with the newly designed special you know the best equipment in the world now helmets that the high school players throws it's off the hands of the tight end jonte baker baker took his eyes off the ball because he saw the cornerback coming up you know that could have been a thigh out but josh belton's kinda he's still grimacing a little bit that shot he took that you talked about uh he's kind of reeling a little bit right now it's tough position there now one position i don't want my kids to play is quarterback and running back and one of them's a running back and you play running back i mean just your skill player running it he's gonna take some shots yeah he ran that last place that last play without his mouthpiece and we had movement up front obviously zach lloyd the center might have moved paul start on the offense five yard penalty second down you defensive lineman that you just loved it with the offensive lineman flinch he just got a free shot on the guy didn't you yeah i bet you now if he would have hit him really hard that would be a personal foul but you know i'm old school back in my day which my sons hate to hear we should really try to knock the guy out if you jump outside make him pay for it you know sometimes that can light a power under you you make a mistake nice job by strojer strikes a block does a good job coming through slanting good job using his hands finds the ball nice job making the tackle strozier is a solid 6-1 235 you know that you know what you want to say don't say just saw he's thick he is thick you go ahead and say what you always say okay that that's what you say solid he's thick in my turn broke it loose but strozier who's thick and fast caught up with him and that's going to be fourth down he's kind of built if he was a truck he'd be a dooley you ever seen a wide body do this he is thick i like them kind of guys those are kind of you got to have big guys like that wide hips big legs just take up space strolls is a baller bushwear punting it blasted out of there fair catch is called for by van at the 38 yard line made there 35 yard kick by bushwear and that's where tucker is going to go on offense for the first time in the second half let's see if they're able to get something going here they were not able to do much of that in the first half very little offense all right if i'm offensive coordinator todrick malone i'm gonna use some screens i might come out in the spread but i'm trying to move it around i'm not gonna spend the rest of the game trying to hammer it in the middle i know broadwater's a a great full back and there's a integral part of this offense but there they go that's what i thought they would do here's the spread let's see how they do with it what we haven't seen is tori and taylor run the ball at all so far in this game that ball is thrown complete to van van's got a first down and more and antoine kincade riding his back finally gets him on the ground at the 42 15-yard pickup there's a screen this is the adjustment i'm glad they made if you want to get back in this game we talked about it play the spread give yourself a chance here [Applause] handoff goes to david davis and he gets his body across the 40-yard line we'll maybe get nellie to check on see if there's anything wrong with tori and taylor or whether it's just a coach's decision taylor is their leading rusher 1315 yards although he's listed as a backup halfback he's their leading rusher he has not had one carry in this game he did have a kickoff return early in the ball game maybe he got hurt i don't know but we have not seen him hardly at all i know nellie's going to find out shepard wide open space out of bounds at the 27.5 yard line oh great call great call by todrick malone offensive coordinator at tucker i mean just does a a complete naked bootleg run and this was a design play and if he goes vertical if he goes vertical inside joshua van's block he might have scored a touchdown yeah but but nice job here they're opening up they found a way to hit the edges which is going to be the key to their success todd malone who has been in four finals with tucker as the offensive coordinator valdosta jumps into a six-man front stem where the stem is when you the linebacker's off the ball and then somebody say go and everybody jumps on the line of scrimmage and uh good job malone the oc and 08 and 11 when they won it under franklin stevens in 13 under lamar when they lost at the creek side and back here again in 60. i like the adjustments made spread them out a little bit here shepard going up top looking for van jump ball and rogers got it chase rogers went up and got it well jace rogers been balling all half man first half had four tackles right there gets an interception i like he goes and gets it at the highest point but shepard puts it up there sky ball and jace rogers out jumps joshua van for it wildcats get it back at the heart of our community are the businesses that don't skip a beat george's electric membership cooperatives stand behind local commerce whether keeping farms running or shining a light on new ventures we bring business large and small to our communities creating jobs driving development supporting dreams georgia's emc's so much more than electricity [Music] [Music] welcome back 7 38 to the third here at the georgia dome here in the 6a final valdosta still shutting out tucker by the score of 17 to nothing in the open we went into the wayback machine when it came to gpb since it's our 20th year of doing the football championships showed you the last time that valdosta won a title how about the last time tucker won a title let's go into the not so way back machine tucker made their way to beat lovejoy 22-7 and it was a battle of juwan williams and alejandro benefield two of the most athletic quarterbacks of this particular season when it came to 2011 and you also had a lovejoy defense that went into this game averaging a little less than five points allowed when it comes to this particular matchup and it was a great victory for franklin stevens in 2011 they went in 2013 lost to creekside here on this field but once again with tucker they've got the pedigree and you should we showed the graphic a little earlier on about all of the guys that have made tucker football what it is going all the way back to mike floor so tucker has the pedigree and everything is rolling back to 2011 when they won that last title they're trying to get it back but they're down 17 back upstairs they have won two state titles they've played in four state championship games prior to tonight they played in the state championship game way back in 1963 they lost to dublin 13 to 12 in 2008 as nellie was telling you right there they beat lovejoy actually they beat maris in 2008 15-3 and then beat lovejoy 22-7 in 2011 lost to creekside you saw the video just a moment ago 52-28 in the 2013 game so two and two in the state finals and down 17 to nothing here in the third quarter to valdosta the wildcats seeking their 24th state championship here tonight belton throws a screen pass it's going to be a double pass they throw it back to belton and wesley veal having a rough night threw it over belton's head probably good that he did because it might have been intercepted had he not well nice discipline nice job by jerry vaughn anytime the play goes away you got someone who has a responsibility of the quarterback rolling out and does a good job that time jerry vaughn number eight playing his responsibility they also got some tricks up their sleeves now coach roddenberger is coming in here to win throwing everything right out outside of the kitchen sink at him so veal limps off the field mighty got hurt on the shot after the pass was thrown and now hunter holds us in there in quarterback for the first time 32 yard pickup for hunter hold the height you step on yeah that was the heisman stiff that was a nice call again it's all set up with all the screen passes they've thrown three receivers to the left they run the quarterback power holt just makes a great player i mean that's a playmaker doing his job well 7 19 to play in the third and we finally see the second of the two quarterback system here for valdosta tonight 100 hold on the keeper down to the 44-yard line so holt comes in and gets 36 yards on his first two carries you know i'm gonna describe how hunter hulk's welding the ball he's running the ball like he's got an attitude a like attitude like man i just watched josh belton i just watched the last quarterback come in and dominate and now i'm coming to get mine so i'm like he's like okay belton's doing his but i like he's running with an attitude yeah he's come in and said look belton's been hot right i better do something i'm gonna be back on the sideline how about that taking advantage of his opportunity holt gonna run it again this time no running room gets dropped for the loss by strozier back at the 49-yard line feed me everybody says feed me right after every play feed me good play though looks like the ball was a little premature it's a good job strolling making the play he's flashing right now i think that was a screen pass really smart that time by holt not making a silly mistake i think that was gonna be a screen left he ate it you gotta live to fight again i really like the way strozier gets to the ball in a hurry doesn't he yeah he's balling man he's uh showing some good stuff today third down and ten swing back the other way for the inside screen he gets dropped at the 42-yard line by trey leslie and it's gonna be fourth down nine screens so far a lot of success did you see the face mask on this one maybe let's check it yeah right there that was actually a head twister that was a little more of a face mask you can't miss that one that was eugene brown the commitment to west virginia got a piece of that face mask and now valdosta gonna go for it fourth down they run a trick-a-roo here and they're gonna try to run and let's see did tucker get a time-out call they did they tricked him they had the punt personnel on there then they do the quick drill run off and try to get tucker and the wrong personnel and tucker got the timeout call valdosta's on the move i mean that's i mean they're i mean they're coming in with i mean i'm telling you they're coming in with with really a dynamic offense i mean they're showing the spread they're showing screens they're showing the ability to run power they got trick plays you know what they're doing they're playing it like it's a state championship game and they want to win it i mean they're not leaving anything this is the last game of the season we're not leaving anything in the playbook we're not saving anything we're using it all tonight nelly what you got on torien taylor all right here's the update he sprained his ankle last week in the north side game and it just hasn't fully come around so he's right now you see that's pretty much the extent of it right now cheerleader helmet on top of his head making sure to keep everybody engaged but don't look for him to be coming in unless he really needed to come in right now that ankle's still pretty bad from a week well he had 1300 yards rushing for the season averaging nearly 11 yards per carry in this wing t offense coming into tonight we saw him on an early kick return and that's all we've seen him so apparently the ankle as you pointed out nellie's just too much for him to go now they got bushwear out there to punt and i'm going to tell you a little bit something else here vann backs away from it it's rolling sideways and raldasta has pinned tucker inside the five great point what i was going to say about that what they did right there because they ended up punting anyone yes they what they did they just you they made tucker burn a timeout they're down 17 we're in the second half we've got 17 minutes left on the clock and tucker just had to burn a time out for nothing can you say gamesmanship you got it yep that is brilliant that is that's what you call coaching right there i had a great job by rademaker and his staff yep they're giving tucker's staff all they can handle it's gonna be interesting man todrick malone everybody had to figure it out again we talked about them pla running the spread right now you know it looks like they're gonna try to run it out here but for them to score points they're gonna have to put the ball in there and get to the edges they give it the broad water and he slams out across the 10 up to the 12 or 13 yard line and picks up close to eight on the play broadwater 44 yards rushing on seven carries tonight as the clock ticks under five minutes to play and now the clock is beginning to be a factor for tucker i don't know now we're you know we're under 17 minutes of game clock left in this game i don't know that you can run your way back into this game yeah they continue to run the belly which is which is a you know staple made of this offense and we saw the last series and you know i i really believe this at all levels now you run the ball for toughness but you're gonna you score points when you pass yeah the passing game gets you there you run for toughness you got to throw the score and i just think when you're at this level we're gonna have to better use their arm the quarterback's gonna have to make some plays and i'm talking about xavier shepard with his arm yeah and they have just not had any kind of plays in the passing game shepard's 5 and 10 for 45 yards davis barely got back to the line of scrimmage we talked about vice and every time you know forcing them to run inside how many players have you seen here that weren't go outside yet for tucker i mean what maybe two yeah on a drive on the interception drive of the last series two plays yeah they absolutely outside of the naked bootleg by chef only run they've been able to get on the perimeter night second down until running the reverse man wants to throw the pass deep jump ball samuel bryant was the target at the 50-yard line it's great coverage by jalen everett i mean they do a reverse pass again i mean they're throwing to me the last two deep passes they've thrown are the equivalent of really just throwing up a hail mary to me i mean you're just throwing it up and hoping yeah they catch it so in the interception by jace rogers on the series before i mean that's just a throw up i mean those aren't any there is no skill you go into that they gotta figure it out a little better here shepard gonna run gotta beat one man to get the first and he does did you see that know what they call that what you just saw xavier shepard give him they call him give him the business that's called give him the business watch this give him a little whoop a little wham give him watch this give him the oh the business i love it i like it missed on the tackle and shepard picked up the first down there you go when the army working got a run four carries 24 yards for shepard tonight remember this is a tucker offense that's averaging close to 250 yards rushing they're going back to the air complete the fan joshua van makes the grab at the 42-yard line picks up the first down only 97 yards rushing for tucker tonight yeah and that's where the hole is going to be anytime you got right here they're playing cover two you got two safeties over top directly in the middle where the play is going to be made and good job by tucker and good job guys by the quarterback xavier shepard finding it excellent job that time by joshua van but that's where that's the weakness of this zone defense it's going to be inside the safeties david goes in motion they fake a handle to davis downfield they go and nearly intercepted by jace rogers again what did we talk about earlier about throwing against run throwing the ball get your natural throwing motion again you can't at this oh that was a personal foul hit kevin on that one i saw a personal foul after he delivers the ball here watch this this is a personal foul personal foul on the defense 15 yard penalty results in the first down see when it's a penalty i can't give him a die out no if that was legal it would have been a legal die out but when it's a penalty yeah just to shove after the play a little nudge there by bushwear he hit him with his shoulder you know that was close close but anyway tucker needs a break on it needs a break i mean obviously the you know the throwing against the the motion that's a big part of the tucker offense right you got to have a strong arm quarterback to be able to do that on the carry we're trying to strip him with the ball he keeps it in his hands and gets down to the 38 yard line and obviously they've had success with that this season but not tonight against valdosta nelly time to go into the statistics machine and i guess it's the way back stats machine as well the last time that tucker was shut out halloween weekend 2009 in a 26 nothing loss to southwest dekalb franklin stevens was the coach they finished 9-3 it's been a while they're getting shut out here tonight by valdosta nearly ended the shutout right there the big fella got rumblin down to the eight yard line 29-yard pickup nice job on the belly plate finding some cracks right now that offensive line does a good job counter ot bring the backside tackle you know right now as you see they're they're moving moving some pieces right now big boys running he's got some talent man broadwater's got 11 offers including western kentucky air force and army has gone for 89 yards tonight on 10 carries yeah he's a great one he's uh getting after it you know as you see now maybe you know they're wearing them down a little bit but they found some cracks here running the belly play inside toddrick malone offensive coordinator sticking to his guns but i like what he's also done he's also spreading him out a little bit they're taking some shots here and there well and guys when we talked to brian at the half he said he had to change some things up and we hadn't seen on the tucker side we had not seen them do any kind of spread they wanted to try to do it between the tackles and get to the edge and you've seen what valdosta has done because they've made their money this year on the defensive side of the football so we've seen one card played by each of these guys on valdosta on offense it was the one quarterback system there was no two quarterbacks it was one quarterback for tucker it was just running the football then they widen the field and you're seeing what they're able to do it gets them back to running the football 10th play of the drive coming up for tucker first and goal to go from the eight tigers have got to get a touchdown here they got it eight yard touchdown run from chris broadwater who kind of took over the game on that drive and tucker on the board yeah he did he did an excellent job nice job on the belly excellent job by the tucker offensive line keep pounding pounding my dad used to always say keep sawing wood eventually you'll break through tucker broke through touchdown broadwater 22nd touchdown run of the season for broadwater lippy on for the p.a.t 58 of 62 on the season he's good on that one and it is 17-7 tcsg touchdown replay well good job by the offensive line getting the body on the body that's what you want to do you want to road grade the defense knock them off the ball a little bit that's the recipe for success right now for tucker bro as we rewind back let's just rewind it started with the post play on the slant it started with the quarterback getting out of the pocket running on pass plays so they've opened it up and now it's kind of softened up a little bit here on this valdosta defense now valdosta now they've taken a shot now let's see how they respond they went 96 yards 10 plays and 96 yards i mean their bags were up against their own goal pros today march down the field to put themselves back in the game and now that emotion that you were talking about you're starting to see it a little bit and i'm watching the bench here and i was just watching richard wiggins also the offensive lineman here doing an excellent job guys blocking on that play but i like the emotion i like the intensity that drive tucker looked quicker they look faster they look rejuvenated and that's what you got to have anytime you're in a heavyweight fight you got to be able to respond when you get hit in the mouth they got hit in the mouth early they responded let's see how valdosta responds when they took a punch broadwater had 54 yards rushing on that 96 play drive and lippy will kick off and again non-returnable so let's see if the tucker defense is able to build off the momentum given to them by the offense not to mention the rest they gave him on the sideline right as they shoot off that 96-yard drive well i like what kevin patterson's been doing in the second half you know getting his hands on getting getting the defensive backs a little tighter coming down not giving the wildcats so many easy passes because they're going to have to play a little more press if they're going to come up here and stop these screen passes well they go back to belton at quarterback after a series with holt belton going to the air goes complete with shantae baker and jonte baker picks up close to 20 on the play jonte baker the 6-2 218 senior with his 28th catch of the year well number 20 trey leslie gets caught looking inside and his man is running right behind him malachi buckner had to come up from the safety position to put the hit on baker and stop him after a 20-yard pickup well i i would like to see tucker send some pressure take it get back there you know they're running the quarterback's the integral part of the offense go take some shots try to take the quarterback of valdosta out of the game if i'm valdosta i'm going to them screams holt now in their quarterback now we're changing quarterbacks every snap oh man big hit by leslie who got caught looking in on that play that time he was looking right at the quarterback and nailed him tucker doing a good job taking away the screen passes but here this is again a designed run all this is based off of the screens they're hoping that tucker jumps on the screens left and the play was really meant to go right still got the quarterback draws in here out of this formation still got the screens got the slant passes right here you got the the receivers all two receivers inside have a free run right now of a slant pass second down and six grey goes in motion to the top of your screen holt gonna run it again dives forward to the 49-yard line got a three-man front gonna bring up third down and one we're down to maybe the final play of the third quarter this kid's coming in and bringing it though he's a good runner getting after it he's there leading rusher this season 635 yards on the ground coming into tonight's game third and one just shy of the 50.
[Applause] and oh man what a tackle by garen mckinney kept him from big picking up the first down on the final play of the third quarter it looked almost certain they were going to get the first down run right there and garen mckinney comes up with a big stop and it will be fourth down when we come back to start the fourth quarter broadwater carrie tucker into the end zone got him on the board it's a 10-point game as we head to the final 12 minutes this program on gpb is made possible in part by supporters of the georgia high school association including the following support for gpb comes cigna together all the way brian lamar tucker coach on the left allen rodemaker valdosta coach on the right wildcats 17-7 lead as we start the fourth quarter and here is the big play by garen mckinney stop tevin gray from picking up the first down he only had to get to the 50 and mckinney kept him from getting to the stripe and now it's fourth and one actually a little bit less than one as we start the fourth quarter and bushwear on the punt for the wildcats you wouldn't fake it here would you no i wouldn't i mean they've done just about everything else no i wouldn't i wouldn't want to give tucker short field here i would let them try to go the distance because remember they they've had success on that last drive but hadn't had as much as we thought they would i'd play defense bushwear goes all the way back and he punts it away and it's going to be taken by dunsin called a fair catch after he made the catch and it'll be down there at the 13-yard line well played game so far of penalties valdosta three tucker three so clearly hasn't been a big problem here today both teams have kept it pretty clean okay so chuck yep tucker goes back on offense they just were able to roll off a 96-yard drive on their last possession using broadway a lot but they did also spread it out right and through the ball so what do you expect from them here well i expect them to go right back to broadwater and try to test them in the middle but i also think they're going to still open it up and try to get the quarterback trying to get xavier shepard on the edge he's had a good job running he's done a good job running going deep looking for van and joshua van just pulled it in in between two men it's across the 50. well we talked about the weakness of this zone defense right now in valdosta good job by the receiver splitting the zone he spits the two safeties right here you see him he's right in the middle we talked about the weakness of this zone defense that's exactly where you want to hit him at that's where the home run ball is right there right in the middle they've been dave kingman tonight a lot of swings and misses but when they connected they connect he wouldn't got that though he really got that broad water i mean they kept trying and trying and trying to hit on that big play and they finally did here on their first snap of the fourth quarter well one of the reasons why let's also talk about the inefficiency of the throws i mean there haven't been any good throws i mean this the receivers truly haven't had great balls to play that time xavier schaefer put the ball right on the moon second down and eight wow great open field tackle on david davis right there and that was the kobe mclean again you may stretch this out you want to try to form a wall that's what defense is about and that's what valdosta does here it's just going to be important for valdosta to keep their composure and if i'm valdosta i'm uh i got you got to be smart about playing that zone that they're playing because they're having some some challenges now right now playing the deep passes two tackles for loss tonight for zacoby mclean a team leading 18 on the season it's third down and nine shepard fires to the my goodness or did he he might be a little bit short let's check that spot but man he was about two yards shy of the sticks and muscled his way up there yeah his arm he stretched those arm like he was one like part of the fantastic four stretch armstrong and my watch he puts those arms out there they stretch nice stiff on watches ah i like it he did get the first down they did six catches now for van tonight oh they're gonna go back to the power game who can broadwater six catches for 83 yards he goes to the bench to get a break that's the ballard football king kane made the tackle came by pumping his fist but broadwater picked up a first down on that run i'm gonna tell you wiggins inside 65 they're making it happen and then you gotta remember they're starting to sort of knock this off with the blind off the ball this offensive line we know they're tough we know the offensive line's tough valdosta will have to man up here this time nothing doing bushwear met him there broadwater's up over 100 yards and slow to get up right there he'll come off the field that's good news for valdosta because he has been a wrecking ball here in the second half blake jefferson got that big butt moving now i'm telling you that on offensive line number 54. you got wiggins i you know when the hippos get the rolling now they hard to stop when they come after you now you know what's the most dangerous animal in the in in the jungle now hippo yeah you know offensive line it's okay they like that now big boy you know i'm a big boy hard too man second down david davis dives forward to the 21 and now it's gonna break up a third down in five all right now it's third and five here i'm looking at valdosta taking the shot meaning you gotta blitz send some pressure send some pressure they're gonna tell you this now they're gonna try to get xavier shepard tucker's gonna try to get him out of the pocket and throw throwing the ball they're gonna throw the ball here you gotta send some pressure vans back in he's at the top of the screen he went instead to david and he got body slammed and it was the kobe mclean again his third tackle for loss tonight okay okay it wasn't the pass but they sent they brought pressure they were sending three linebackers it was going to be a blitz did a good job but this time it took care of the run so they did so they it would have covered the pass and they we're going to let them sit back there so obviously they shot the gaps and stopped the run excellent job on that play good job by zakobe mclean and devonshire marshall right there number 92 and it's fourth down eight minutes to go and tucker's going for it here i'm blitzing if i'm valdosta i'm sending guys i'm sending at least six different defenders shepard double move they're going for the touchdown knocked it doesn't matter the ball goes over on downs wow i mean let me just tell you one receiver route i mean one receiver route that time by tucker joshua vaughn joshua van is wide open i mean he's there the throw was just it was just under the throne it should have probably came earlier but the looking van i mean he does an excellent job but let me tell you what happened on that great blocking by the tucker offensive line you got what you want they max protect it he doesn't stop and go he's open there right but the ball came too late it came too late when he did the little stutter step he got his open and that's when the ball had to get there i mean they went max protect they had seven guys in protection it was the one receiver route work perfect separate throw valdosta back on offense and hunter hold the quarterback tackled out there and who's hurt on the play got a valdosta player hurdle to play zach lloyd their center is hurt on the play this is a cramp saw a lot of this earlier in the day and chuck you can tell him you played here in this building a long time it gets hot down there on the field it's really hot down there on the field yeah you know and inside this dome you know it gets really hot yep a lot of these kids got to remember they're not they're not used to playing on field turf so we'll take a timeout as they work on zach lloyd with 7 33 to play and valdosta leading by 10. the ghsa football championship is made possible in part by regions it's time to expect more georgia's electrical valdosta seven minutes and 33 seconds away from their 24th state championship but their first since 1998 as they lead the tucker tigers matt stewart chuck smith john nelson the gpb team the fourth of four games here today and every one of them has been absolutely thrilling and i think this game is going to come down to to the last couple possessions also and phil and valdosta getting a little conservative and you tell me seven of the last nine play offensive plays they've been running plays with when they were having success they were throwing screens they were throwing slants second down and seven morrow goes in motion will run it and leslie is there at the 29-yard line to meet him and it's gonna be third down in about two and a half well they are milking the clock that's what now eight of their last 10 plays have been runs and they've gotten completely away from the screen game i don't even know if they ran a screen in the second half but in the first half they ran nine screens and they had a lot of success it opened it opened it up for him a little bit so but i understand what they're trying to do well nelly foretold this he said holt would get in when they had the lead and they'd try to drain the clock by running holes a lot of quarterback runs third and one right here all right there he curves and your draw and it got him that time leslie got him great penetration by trey leslie right there to stop him and it's going to be fourth down and tucker should be getting the ball back here wow nine of the last 11 plays runs they're they're slowing down the pace and it's awesome so it's to me it's giving tucker an opportunity to get back in the game they're getting an opportunity to get another possession but tucker is down two scores and we're going to click under six minutes here by the time bushwear punts yep tucker's got to score fast we're gonna have to put the ball in there but broadwater's gonna have to break a long one so bushwear will punt it out of there man that's a great kick fan fair catch retreating makes it at the 22. you talk about flipping the field bushwear just did that right there 48-yard boom you know coach said he might be a college punter 48 yards right there situation i tend to believe him that was a heck of a kick right there and he's your starting mike linebacker when i when i played high school football we had an unbelievable punter adrian jarrell ended up going to know that game i mean i bet you could have been a pro punter he's listening now hey man i'm giving you some love you you had a club foot when you used to kick that thing he was a great quarterback played receiver at notre dame but um called him the j man yeah he was a beast everywhere i go people to this day when they say clay clark simply said so he's doing good doing real good first and ten ball at the 23. shepard rolling throwing tight and dropped it cameron richardson is a rather big fella at six five or six three two seventy yep should have made that play we probably wouldn't went far but i think they need to concentrate on anytime they go two receivers to any side they've had the the post a skinny post every time you know and it splits to safeties because they're playing the zone defense and um expect them to go back that you have success you want to repeat it they've caught some big plays they've caught some big passes on offense as tucker they got to give xavier shepard some throws downfield vertical four wides right here shepard i hope it's a cramp but i've seen that didn't look good it's like he pulled a hamstring possibly and van has caught virtually every pass that they've thrown here tonight that looked good for the young man six for 83 yards receiving yeah and there you go grabbed him right there at the 40-yard line hopefully it's just a cramp he can come back and finish and compete but if he doesn't had a great year man he's the baller he's been balling all day van has caught six of their eight passes completed here tonight doesn't look like he's coming back anytime soon shepard evie rush being chase great block in the backfield but that's not going to do it quarterback sacks and kobe mclean was in on that play [Applause] tyler blue and tyler blue [Applause] chuck i know you have a unique perspective playing those guys that are chasing after a tucker quarterback in a dark jersey what's it like going up against the mystique the reputation the history when valdosta walked in the room what's it like going up against valdosta capital v well i mean the mystique was there because the players had so much pride and belief in the history it also helped them play over their heads a lot of times and i just believe that a lot of times when you believe and you have a program that everyone believes they're winners it always makes you feel you're always going to win in the end and that's something that they always have had a lot of folks compare this 2016 squad to that 98 team not a lot of stars that 98 squad had only one division one football player these guys have been a team to get to this game 15. you know but here's what's interesting about it coach alan rademaker you know he's got this great team they're four minutes and 22 seconds away from winning the state championship but we talk about the mystique because we're old enough to remember it none of these tucker players were born the last time right none of these valdosta players were born the last time they won the state title and tucker hadn't had to go and play in valdosta when they're stomping on the ground when you're the visitor under the stands yeah well valdosta now back with the ball on the tucker side of the 50 and a chance to put this one away tevin gray on the run right there to take a look at some of the valdosta players that have gone on to play in the nfl there's one in there right now of course most of you know him from here in the state of georgia malcolm mitchell had a great career injury break but a great career nonetheless wrapped it up strong at georgia now with new england and valdos has a rich history but don't get it twisted now the gladiators we want to stay championship and beat bow down so it's 79 i think we're 79 let charlie dean back in man don't get it twisted we got hey we're going to make a comeback year like like this we got a good coach like rydermaker and david perrino at clarkson nothing doing for holt right there jeremiah williams among those helping him get on the ground and leslie might have shaken up his shoulder a little bit on that tackle and now it's gonna be third down remember tucker has only two timeouts left and now the clock really working against them because they're down 10. yeah and it's going to be tough here they got to figure out a way to get a turnover they just got to get the ball back you got to score here and you got to try to get the ball again it's going it's tough sledding right now for tucker valdosta's in total control third down and 12. holt stays in there at quarterback gonna run it right up the middle again and stopped in his tracks they're trying to strip him up the ball strozier making that tackle and tucker burns their second timeout and i have a lot of respect because i played against when we played valdosta was that 87 yeah the 86 87 year i mean they were just phenomenal i mean they they they had a 280 pound offensive line i remember the ajc here on the front of the paper they had their offensive line compared to the falcons yeah they were bigger than the falcons at the time you know so i mean they've always been a phenomenal program and you know these young men um you know they got a lot of history behind them alan rodemaker coming into today owen three is an assistant in championship games he was in the thomasville staff that lost the thomas county central he was on the peach county staff grants gillespie and he was a defensive backs coach at burns in south carolina when they lost the championship 31 guys interviewed for the valdosta head coaching gig when rance gillespie left for georgia southern gillespie was here today and he had conversations with rodemaker i'm fairly sure so rademaker gets it he understands what it means to this town since he's been the long time defensive coordinator only 254 from a title bush ware on the front for valdosta at the 41-yard line and goes straight up the chute tucker got some pressure on it that time not as good a pun it's going to be downed at the 24 yard line and tucker goes back on offense 21-yard kick you know and when they hired alan rodimeter rademaker and they decided to promote him from defensive coordinator beat the 31 other guys who was interviewed for the job the superintendent down there said that you know ryde maker believes that he can bring the passion and the tradition and the winning back about dawson he's got a plan to do it and here in year number one he's going to break a nearly 20-year drought for valdosta in the state championship you know one of the interesting things he said also we talked about him was he was the weight room coach yeah so you know you're in touch with the players a lot you know that's just a interesting mclame drops broadwater fourth tackle for loss for zocobee mclean tonight he'll be back he's just a junior him and jace rogers are defensive mvps tonight in my book for valdosta boom i'm sorry that's a dial he gets a yeah nice shot screen pass right now for tucker those kind of players aren't going to help you when you got to take some chances it's 2 minutes and 14 seconds left you you're going to throw an interception or we're going to throw touchdowns or you're gonna you know walk out of here without getting past the 50-yard line second down and ten shepard rolling and incomplete the buckner and it's gonna be third down you know continuing our conversation about the marvelous job that alan rodemaker has done this season looks like it's going to culminate in valdosta's 24th state championship you know i asked him i said you know when you took the job given where valdosta had been were there people in south georgia who believed that the valdosta wildcats time had come and gone that the football had passed him by and he said you know what there's some people in town who really thought that well he's proved them wrong well he has proven wrong and you know how it happens i mean you got classifications changing you got your crosstalk rivals winning championships and you know i understand that and just think about the pressure all the players have been under just to win another championship because you know what the old players are going to say you guys aren't quite as good as what we were but guess what they're going to wear a ring just like the old school did now i mean they're going to fit they're going to go right up in the history of valdosta wildcats and rademaker heard a lot of those comparisons he said i just hate him i hate to make those comparisons these kids have worked their butts off and all they've ever heard is you're not as good as you used to be and he said you know what we did not focus on the championship we focused on winning every day whether it was practice or game night classroom we focused on winning every day first down here tucker's last gas ball goes over to the wildcats and let the coronation begin i'm gonna tip my head also to jace rogers look man number five is balled out tonight i'm i mean he's gotten after it zakobi mclean balled out eric simmons antoine kincaid look this defense has been phenomenal tonight valdosta congratulations they are one minute away from putting another column on that list in a won by the 2000s first state championship since 1998 now just 60 seconds away from the wildcats kind of get me fired up you know hey so there's hope for the gladiators right clark central right you can come back and valdosta has come back all the way back yeah pick up some of my friends down in valdosta got a lot of good friends and i know how important this game was for them congratulations out to valdos and also congratulations out to tucker great year but you know you got to get back to the drawing board next year and try to get back here but this is valdosta's night they earned it tucker just burned their final timeout that's the last time they can stop the clock here with 53 seconds to go another fine run for brian lamar's team they're going to come up short however tonight in the 6a championship game start playing against teams that are have great corners and a lot of speed i think it's showing up for all the games today got to better throw the ball a little bit got to be able to make some plays downfield and that's one of the things that valdosta did very early the screen game was dynamic early you know josh belton was phenomenal throwing the ball running quarterback draws this was a valdosta team on defense that was swarming to the ball i mean they did everything pretty much right today what a first day of georgia high school championship action we've had on gpb i don't think we've ever had a better first day than this one four incredible games we've got four more tomorrows starting at 10 a.m yep 10 a.m start and it's gonna culminate at eight o'clock tomorrow night i'm fired up grayson roswell yeah i will have one a new suit just like my boy nelly clock running down man every valdosta is pretty this is the biggest this is the biggest crowd i've ever seen a high school team bring to the dome what i'm seeing from valdosta right now these fans are going crazy here lots of fans came up from lowndes county to support the guys and that was the final snap on a championship season nelly's got coach rodemaker you have officially brought back championship football to valdosta well listen what i told our kids this week was i'm tired of hearing about what your father and grandfather and uncle and brother did they've always told our kids we're not good enough you don't work hard as we do y'all don't get after it y'all don't practice as long as we do and i told them this is about you guys whether we won or not tonight this was about our kids and what they put in this year because i thought we had a lot of kids overachieved and the defensive coordinator who's now the head coach won it on defense yeah well they played well tonight because that's a good group right there i don't want to play them again i'll tell you that but um they played hard and they really have been the backbone of our whole team all year go celebrate congratulations very much alan rademacher adds another title to valdosta high back upstairs wow what a night for the valdosta wildcats as they win their 24th state championship coming in their 32nd state championship game appearance and you could hear the emotion chuck in coach rademaker's delivery and conversation there with uh nelly uh i tell you what those kids have been through a lot well they have a lot of pressure playing football in valdosta and for tonight they're back on top of the high school world can you imagine everyone telling you you're not good enough no it's time you imagine everyone's saying that you don't do this yeah and you know i do it all the time too sometimes my son went here all that but i understand the pressure they go under because the school i went to they're under that kind of pressure too but give a lot of credit to coach ryden maker he changed the culture and that's what it starts with first this ain't the old school culture it's a new championship valdosta culture congratulations out to coach rodermaker a smothering smothering defense tonight and offensively they did all that they really needed to do in that first quarter well they did josh belton came out he ran the ball with efficiency he threw the ball with accuracy he did what he had to do and i mean i can't say enough about the valdosta offense i mean they want to get to a vicious tucker defense and manhandle them 24 state championships but until tonight they had never won a state championship or play for one in this building the last year of the state championships at the georgia dome and valdosta walks out of here with the trophy oh they're tearing down the house the house that i helped build well dion said he built this but i was just kind of rolling you were started this morning with the double-a state title won by eagles landing or rather the single a private in double overtime i was trying to say that eagles landing christian beating fellowship 34-27 spectacular game cedar grove won their first title ever be greater atlanta christian to 19. how about rome knocking off uh buford i know to win the 5a championship and now valdosta back in the championship circle for the first time in nearly 20 years well you know and again i don't think this is the last time we're gonna see valdosta no but it's gonna be in the new mercedes dome not the count is this is a big one and one they will not soon forget and all these kids that are wearing the valdosta gold you know they're part of it all they ever heard about is what the football team used to be well it used to be is now is yeah they're back and think about how it all started it started by knocking off their rival lounge think how big that was for the program i mean you know you start start off by beating them and that that you know re-energized the community you know coach ryden maker said beat lounge won one of the toughest regions in all of high school football region 1 6a with all those great teams and probably every team in that region you know houston county didn't even make it out of the field in region one and they certainly were a top 10 caliber team probably the toughest region in all football they won that pays off for him here tonight with a big victory in atlanta winning the state championship yeah well it's going to be interesting to see what seal what happens now so when they go back to valdosta some they're going to say man you guys got a ring just like we do i love it i mean i love it it's just i understand what coach rodermaker what you go through anytime you play with a traditional legendary program you know you got the the basemores you got the nick hiders all the the legendary all the ghosts of the you know and the raptors and all that stuff and um this is really a testament to what these kids can do because it takes a community and it takes a great head coach and tremendous defensive performance tonight as they shut down a high-powered tucker offense the kobe mclean jace rogers all those guys balled out 17-7 valdosta the 6a state champions here in 2016. time now to send you down to the championship podium and mark
