As a boy growing up in Germany, Harry Lowenstein experienced the rise of Adolf Hitler and the brutal treatment of Jews. In the early 1940s, Lowenstein, along with his father, mother and sister, were sent to Kaiserwald, a concentration camp in present-day Latvia. He worked in the camp’s auto garage, fixing automobiles. When he was liberated at age 13 in 1945, Lowenstein weighed 65 pounds.
