JONATHAN CAPPS HAS SPENT THE BETTER PART OF THE LAST TWO DECADES MASTERING THE CRAFT OF GLASSBLOWING.
THE STUDENTS AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT AND BEYOND ARE THE RECIPENTS OF HIS VAST KNOWLEDGE AND AWARD WINNING CREATIVE TALENT.
HE TALKED WITH THE BROAD & HIGH TEAM IN HIS SPACE AT COLUMBUS GLASS ART CENTER ABOUT HIS PRACTICE.
IN THE HOT SHOP AT SHERMAN STUDI ART CENTER ON OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY'S WEST CAMPUS, HE SHOWED US HOW HE FLUIDLY MOVES BETWEEN TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES, WHILE CONSTANTLY PUSHING BOUNDARIES IN THE GOAL OF CREATING NEW DESIGNS.
>> I LIKE TO TELL PEOPLE THE STORY I GIVE IS THAT I SWITCHED SPORTS.
FOR ME, THE EXPERIENCE OF WELL AND TRYING TO PERFECT A CRAFT.
AND JUST LIKE ON THE FIELD, WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO PERFECT THE CRAFT OF BASEBALL THROUGH REPETITION AND MUSCLE MEMORY.
THAT WAS MY FIRST KIND OF CONNECTION TO THE MATERIAL ITSELF WAS THROUGH THIS SORT OF OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DRIVE TO PERFECT OR TRY AND LEARN THIS CRAFT THAT IS VERY DIFFICULT MATERIAL.
THAT WAS 22 YEARS AGO.
23 YEARS AGO NOW.
IN A SIMPLE WAY, WE ARE BASICALLY TAKING SAND SILICA, SODA LIME, SEVERAL OTHER INGREDIENTS AT ITS BASIC, BASIC LEVEL.
SUPER HEATING SAND AT 2400 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.
AND THEN, TO MAKE IT A LIQUID, AND THEN BRINGING IT DOWN TO A WORKING TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 2,100 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.
WHICH YOU WOULDN'T THINK 300 DEGREES MAKES THAT BIG OF A DIFFERENCE BUT IT REALLY DOES.
THAT IS WHAT WE WORK THE MATERIAL AT.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS MATERIAL IS THAT IT KIND OF HOVERS IN THIS GRAY ZONE.
IS IT A SOLID?
IS IT A LIQUID?
IT ACTS A LITTLE BIT LIKE BOTH.
WHAT I FIND INTERESTING AND WHAT I TEACH MY STUDENT IS THAT GLASS IS HAPPIEST WHEN IT IS A LIQUID.
THAT'S WHEN IT IS MOST STABLE, ACTUALLY.
WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, YEAH, THAT SEEMS SIMPLE.
WHEN YOU DROP A PIECE OF GLASS IT SHATTERS.
OF IT, IT STAYS TOGETHER.
SO WE GET TO WORK WITH THE MATERIAL WHEN IT IS AT ITS ABSOLUTE HAPPIEST STATE.
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I HAVE A VERY REGIMENTED PROCESS BUT IT IS PRETTY ASYMMETRICAL.
I WILL USE MY SKETCH BOOK.
I WILL GO INTO A DESIGN FORMAT AND THEN BRING THAT TO THE STUDIO.
OFTENTIMES I KIND OF HAVE A VAGUE IDEA BUT THEN USE THE STUDIO AS THE SKETCH BOOK.
I THINK PROTOTYPING AND EXPERIMENTATION, IT ALMOST LIKE A STRUCTURED IMPROVE.
YOU MIGHT KNOW WHERE IT IS GOING.
THERE MIGHT BE A HAPPY ACCIDENT.
USUALLY ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER THING LEADS TO ANOTHER THING AND THE PRACTICE I'M INVOLVED IN IS SORT OF AN ONGOING RESEARCH WHERE, YOU KNOW, I RARELY GET THE THING OUT OF THE OVEN AND SAY THIS IS IT!
IT'S LIKE, I GET THE THING OUT OKAY, NOW WHAT'S NEXT?
YOU KNOW.
AND THAT'S KIND OF HOW THAT WORKS WITH ME.
WHAT DREW ME TO GLASS IS ONE, IT REQUIRES TEAMWORK.
THIS CONNECTION, A RELIANCE ON OTHERS TO MAKE SOMETHING WORK.
I'M A PEOPLE PERSON AND I LIKE THE ENERGY OF THE GLASS STUDIO.
WE ARE FEEDING OFF OF EACH OTHER.
WHETHER I HAVE MY ASSISTANTS HELPING ME OR I'M HELPING SOMEBODY ELSE, WE ARE ALL INVESTED IN THE SUCCESS OF THIS THING WE ARE MAKING AND I FIND THAT SO INSPIRING AND IT REALLY DRIVES EVERYONE TO WANT TO DO WELL.
I LIKE WORKING WITH OTHERS.
I LIKE COLLABORATING.
YOU KNOW, I'M INSPIRED BY THE ENERGY THAT STUDENTS BRING TO THE CLASSROOM AND TO THE HOT SHOP.
WHEN I'M IN THE STUDIO WITH STUDENTS, IT FEELS LIKE COACHING.
OKAY?
IT FEELS LIKE COACHING, ESSENTIALLY, YOU ARE INSPIRING STUDENT TO HAVE THE CONFIDENCE TO DO SOMETHING THEY NEVER THOUGHT THAT THEY COULD DO OR TO INTERACT WITH SOMETHING THAT SEEMS A LITTLE SCARY AT FIRST.
AND AS A COACH, THAT IS WHAT YOU DO.
YOU TRY TO INSPIRE STUDENTS TO HAVE THE CONFIDENCE TO TAKE THAT FIRST STEP.
AND ONCE THEY TAKE THAT FIRST STEP, IT IS TYPICALLY A SNOWBALL EFFECT.
AND, YOU CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT.
SO, I COULDN'T MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THE BOMB POP BY MYSELF.
I THINK THAT IS PRETTY OBVIOUS.
IN BASEBALL, YOU EACH HAVE YOUR PART.
BUT IT IS NOT ONE PERSON ON THE FIELD WITH ANY TEAM SPORT THAT IS GOING TO WIN THE GAME.
JUST AS INVESTED IN THE WORK AS I AM, YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT GOING TO COME TOGETHER.
I WOULD SAY TO GET TO WHERE WE WERE FOR THAT TEAM FOR THE BOMB POP, SANTI HAS BEEN A STUDENT OF MINE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW.
BEN WAS A STUDENT OF MINE AND HAS NOW GRADUATED AND IS GETTING INTO HIS OWN CAREER IN GLASS.
SO WE ARE LOOKING COMBINED IN THAT STUDIO, AT LEAST SIX TO SEVEN YEARS OF EXPERIENCE JUST WITH MY ASSISTANTS AND THEN TACK ON ANOTHER 20 PLUS WITH ME.
IT TAKES A WHILE.
YOU KNOW.
IT IS NOT AN OVERNIGHT THING.
BUT I GUESS YOU COULD SAY THAT WITH ANY CRAFT.
WITH ANY MATERIAL.
YOU KNOW.
ONCE YOU START SOMETHING, YOU CAN'T STOP.
SO, THERE IS THE ADRENALINE JUNKIE IN YOU.
RIGHT?
THE ANXIETY THAT KEEPS ME HYPER FOCUSED.
IT'S ALMOST LIKE IF I DON'T HAVE THAT FEAR OR ANXIETY THAT IF THIS IS NOT DONE, IF WE DON'T FINISH THIS NOW, IT'S NOT GOING TO MAKE IT.
THAT KEEPS ME FOCUSED.
I LOVE THOSE MOMENTS BECAUSE I CAN SEE AS A VIEWER MAYBE IT IS, WOW, THAT IS TOO INTENSE.
BUT WHEN YOU ARE IN THE MOMENT, EVERYTHING GOES AWAY.
THAT'S WHEN MY MIND IS THE MOST QUIET.
I DON'T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT, YOU KNOW.
IS THERE BREAD IN THE FRIDGE OR WHATEVER IN THAT MOMENT.
YOU KNOW.
IT ALL COMES BACK WHEN IT IS DONE BUT IN THAT MOMENT, THAT IS WHEN MY MIND IS QUIETEST AND I THINK THAT FOR ME, THAT IS ANOTHER, I GUESS, PART OF THIS PROCESS THAT I AM DRAWN TO.
I GUESS THE TRAINING WE DO, THE REPETITION TO GET THE TECHNIQUE DOWN, WE JUST SORT OF LET THAT TAKE OVER AND YOU HAVE TO TRUST YOUR HANDS AND TRUST WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN.
DOES IT ALWAYS WORK OUT?
NO.
AND, YOU KNOW, I GUESS THAT IS THE NOT HIGH STAKES PART.
THAT THE STUDIO ISN'T NECESSARILY GOING TO GO AWAY, HOPEFULLY I CAN COME BACK AND TRY AGAIN.
BUT, YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW.
IT IS THOSE MOMENTS OF INTENSITY.
IT IS THOSE MOMENTS OF PERCEIVED CHAOS, YOU KNOW, LOOKING IN, THAT WHEN YOU ARE IN IT WITH THE TEAM, KNOWING EVERYBODY IS ON THE SAME PAGE, I'M GETTING CHILLS TALKING ABOUT IT.
KNOWING THAT WE ALL KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON AND EVERYBODY KNOWS THEIR PLACE AND THEIR ROLE IN THAT MOMENT, IS JUST THE HIGHEST HIGH THAT YOU COULD HAVE.
WHEN THAT THING DOES COME OFF AT THE END AND GOES IN THE OVEN, IT'S LIKE THE BEST DRUG.

BLOWN GLASS, TORCHWORKING, STAINED GLASS, FUSED GLASS –ARTIST MADI CANO DOES IT ALL.
WITH DEGRESS IN BOTH ART AND BUSINESS, HER COLORFUL AND SOMETIMES WHIMSICAL CREATIONS ARE HER FULL TIME VOCATION AS WELL AS BRINGING JOY.

I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THIS ALL ON MY OWN AND BUILD MY BASEMENT STUDIO.
I'M AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST.
I CAME TO OSU AS A BUSINESS MAJOR: I KNEW I WANTED TO DO SOMETHING ART RELATED TOO, ON THE SIDE, JUST TO KEEP MY SANITY A LITTLE BIT SO I ENDED UP DOING A BUSINESS AND ART, BOTH BACHELORS DEGREES AT THE SAME TIME.
HERE WE ARE I GUESS NOW DOING GLASS EIGHT YEARS LATER.
AND, USING MY BUSINESS DEGREE TO DO MY OWN BUSINESS AS MY ART.
THERE ARE SOME TIMES WHEN I'M GOING THROUGH A GLASS STORE AND I'M REALLY PHOTO COLOR MATCHING.
I WILL ONLY REALLY LOOK AT ONE PIECE OF IT AND GO OKAY, THAT'S THE ONE I WANT.
THAT'S THE PIECE OF PEACH THAT ACTUALLY MATCHES.
SO THAT'S WHERE WE ARE GOING TO AIM.
I FEEL LIKE MY ADHD WAS ENHANCED WITH GLASS.
YOU HAVE TO THINK SEVEN STEPS AHEAD.
IS THIS COLOR GOING TO WORK WITH THIS COLOR?
THAT IS LIKE THE FIRST THING IN MY LIFE I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO USE MY ADHD TO AN ADVANTAGE.
ACTUALLY ABLE TO THINK MULTIPLE STEPS AHEAD WITH, YOU KNOW, ONE PIECE.
THINKING, YOU KNOW, HOW IS THIS ONE HEAT RIGHT NOW GOING TO AFFECT WHEN I SHAPE IT WAY LATER ON?
WHEN I'M THINKING ABOUT ESPECIALLY MIKE SNAKE PLANT WITH THE LEAVES THEMSELVES.
HOW IS HEATING THE ENTIRE PIECE BEFORE I STRETCH IT VERSUS HEATING IT AND STRETCHING IT A LITTLE BIT AND HEATING IT A LITTLE BIT.
ALL I HAVE LEARNED IN THE HOT SHOP ARE BASICALLY THE SAME ON THE TORCH.
IT IS USING THAT SAME KNOWLEDGE OF THE MATERIAL, JUST ON A SMALLER SCALE AND HOTTER.
I THINK ONE OF THE SKILLS THAT HELPED ME OUT THE MOST THAT I LEARNED AS A SKILL OF MINE IS BEING MORE AMBIDEXTROS.
I CAN PUT MY MAKE UP ON WITH MY LEFT HAND NOW.
IT IS USEFUL TO HAVE BOTH HANDS KNOWING WHAT IS GOING ON AT THE SAME TIME.
ANY GLASS IN GENERAL IS GOING TO BE A TRIAL AND ERROR.
NEW COLOR COMBINATION YOU ARE DOING.
MY PROCESS AND TECHNIQUE IS FINDING NATURAL PLANTS AND KIND OF JUST NATURAL INSPIRATIONS ESPECIALLY LATELY.
I HAVE BEEN GARDENING A LOT.
AND DOING MY HOUSE PLANTS A LOT.
SOMETHING ABOUT LIKE BEING ABLE TO MAKE GLASS LOOK REAL LIKE PLANTS AND BE ABLE TO STUDY THOSE AND SEE THE COLOR WORK AND SEEING LIKE THE COLOR PATTERNS AND STUFF LIKE THAT, MOST OF THE PHOTOS ON MY PHONE ARE CLOSEUPS OF PLANTS NOW.
SO YEAH.
THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT LIKE, BEING ABLE TO SEE REAL LIFE IN THE GLASS LATER ON.
YES.
IT IS A WEIRD BLEND OF REAL LIFE AND GLASS SOMETIMES.
THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF THAT IS LIKE WHICH COLOR LOOKS BEST?
AND STUFF AND THINK I SEE THE COLORED GOLD RUBY HERE, FUSCHIA, CHARTREUSE.
BUT IT IS REALLY UNTIL YOU GET THOSE COLORS TOGETHER AND AS YOU ARE WORKING WITH THEM, SOMETIMES, THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO WORK TOGETHER.
I JUST HAD MY FIRST SOLO MARKET THE OTHER DAY SO I HAD MY REALLY BIG SNAKE PLANT PIECE THERE.
BUT IT WAS SO FUNNY, THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT WOULD WALK BY AND JUST THINK I WAS SELLING PLANTS AND THEN THEY WOULD DO THIS LIKE, DOUBLE TAKE AND LIKE STEP BACK AND BE LIKE WAIT, THOSE ARE GLASS!
AS AN ARTIST, YOU CAN'T BE AFRAID TO MAKE PRODUCTION WORK TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A LIVING.
WHATEVER SELLS AND PAYS THE BILLS AND DOESN'T KILL ME FIRST IS KIND OF THE GOAL, RIGHT?
SO AS LONG AS I'M NOT MISERABLE DOING IT.
I WOULD RATHER BE DOING THIS THAN BE SITTING AT A DESK JOB.
NOT GOING TO LIE.
I WOULD SAVE MY SHOULDER BUT IT WOULDN'T SAVE MY SANITY.
I HAVE BEEN TELLING MY DAD THAT ALL THE TIME.
I COULDN'T SIT IN A CUBICLE ALL DAY.

ANYBODY THAT COME TO ME WANTING A BIKE, THEY ALREADY KNOW IT'S GOING TO BE LOW TO THE GROUND.
IF YOU WANT SOMETHING HIGH, THEN I'M PROBABLY NOT THE PERSON TO COME TO.
THE FIRST LOW RIDER I HAD EVER SEEN WAS A 50 CHEVY TRUCK.
IT WAS ALL BLACK.
IT HAD CHROME RIMS ON IT.
AND I PICKED UP MY FIRST LOW RIDER MAGAZINE WHEN I WAS YOUNGER AND I SAW THE BIKES AND I SAW THE ART AND EVERYTHING ABOUT IT JUST, I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH IT.
>> WHEN IT COMES TO FLOW, WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN.
I LOOK AT BODY LINES ON OLD CARS.
THAT'S WHERE A LOT OF THE DESIGNS COME FROM.
THE FLEET LINE IS SOMETHING I DESIGNED AND THAT IS KIND OF WHERE THAT DESIGN CAME FROM.
THE 48 FLEETLINE.
I WAS ONCE TOLD WHEN YOU ARE DESIGNING SOMETHING, ESPECIALLY A BICYCLE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE BIKE FROM THE BEGINNING AND NOT STOP ALL THE WAY TO THE VERY END.
THAT IS WHEN YOU GOT THE PERFECT FLOW.
AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT REALLY STUCK WITH ME.
WHEN I'M IN THE ZONE, THERE IS NO DISTRACTION.
THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BREAK MY CONCENTRATION.
IF I'M HAVING A BAD DAY, I JUST BUILD BIKES.
I HAVE NO FABRICATION OR WELDING BACKGROUND.
I DIDN'T THINK I COULD DO IT BUT I STARTED DOING IT AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT.
IT IS MY ART.
IT IS MY PASSION.
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
RIDEABLE ART AND CREATE SOMETHING NOT ONLY I CAN ENJOY, BUT OTHER PEOPLE CAN ENJOY.
WHEN I THINK NEW MEXICO HAS A BIG CULTURE WHEN IT COMES TO LOW RIDER THEMES.
AND WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.
JUST, NOBODY IS THE SAME.
AND THAT'S KIND OF HOW THE BIKES ARE.
EVERY ONE OF THESE BIKES ARE DIFFERENT.
JUST LIKE SHOES OR ANYTHING ELSE.
YOU KNOW.
IT JUST KIND OF FITS.
THE INDIVIDUAL PERSON THAT IS ACTUALLY RIDING A BIKE.
WHEN IT COMES TO THE ODD FELLOWS, IT IS ALL ABOUT RIDING TOGETHER.
WHILE WE ARE ALL RIDING, PEOPLE THEY COME OUT OF THEIR HOUSE, THEY ARE ALL SMILING.
THEY ARE HAPPY.
WAVING.
IT IS JUST A REALLY GOOD FEELING.
IT ALWAYS PUTS A SMILE ON SOMEONE'S FACE.
IT IS BIKES THAT BRING US TOGETHER BUT IT IS THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE US STAY.
IT IS ABOUT FAMILY.
IT IS ABOUT FINDING YOUR GIFT.
IT IS ABOUT DOING SOMETHING THAT CAN TAKE YOU AWAY FROM THE EVERYDAY DISTRACTION.
WHATEVER YOU ARE GOING THROUGH DURING THE WEEK.
WHEN YOU ARE ON THESE BIKES, YOU DON'T HAVE A CHOICE BUT TO JUST SLOW DOWN.
AND TAKE EVERYTHING IN AROUND YOU.
IT JUST BRINGS EVERYONE TOGETHER.
AND IT JUST, EVERYONE IS ON THE SAME PAGE.
WE ARE JUST IN THE MOMENT.
