M.A.R.I.A.N.A Okay, awesome.
Can you tell me about how you heard about the internship program?
Yes, of course.
I heard about the internship program on social media.
And then right after I decided to go find okay and tell you tell me why students should join the film, TV and media program.
Working with professionals just gives you a sense of confidence you know, as artists were always um.
self-conscious and stuff like that.
But working with like minded people always inspires you to go more and get of your comfort zone.
Keep learning.
Not only that, but people are super cool.
here.
Yea, you know, we're always helping each other out.
If someone doesn't know something, the other person might know it.
and they were always teaching each other it's always a teamwork.
That makes the dream work and it's all here.
What's up, everybody?
And welcome back to Rhythm Lounge.
We have GoodKnight, Jake.
Here with us a.k.a Jake.
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day and being here And sharing your talent and your music with us.
So Jake this was your very first televised performance.
How does that feel?
It feels It feels amazing.
Like I never thought I would do this this early in My career and all that.
Yeah.
So that was your first televised performance.
What was the most surprising thing about that?
Honestly, these...
This right here, I didn't think like They were going to really customize it for a Again, theatrical for you over here.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like, I know you mentioned the back Lights and everything, the whole stage.
And they the SBVC FTVM students.
Put some effort into it, so.
Yeah.
Um.
What would you say is the most difficult part about songwriting?
Because I know you performed a song called Harley Quinn, which was, I'm sure, inspired by Harley Quinn.
Can you tell me a little bit about about that honestly, Honestly, This song was not inspired by Harley Quinn at all.
Maybe a little bit, but I'm I don't even say Harley Quinn.
In this.
It's honestly I just Write the thoughts, just jot down the thoughts.
And sometimes it can be hard to like, Do I want to get that personal or do I want to....
Right.
I don't know, say this or that and trying to Or this is the And I find myself Moving words around to make it flow better And still all the time and all that.
Gotcha.
So when you're writing a song.
Specifically when you wrote Harley Quinn, What was the thou.. thought process behind that?
And do you typically run those songs by your family?
Or your friends before you share them with the world?
Mm.
I'll probably run them, definitely not the family, But I'll ride share a couple of friends in the massive Family... You ain't getting the exclusive.
Maybe a couple of friends.
Gotcha.
Okay.
Sometimes nothing.
I just throw it out Yeah.
Gotcha.
And for that track Me...
I was just thinking about, man, I don't even know, Okay.
It just, it just came about basically Like that in a natural way.
So I know you mentioned during the break That, you know, with your music, it's very interesting For you to...you know, have to PG-13 your music a little bit.
So what, what, what would you say was the learning curve here with having to, you know, Um.
Remain in a PG-13 format in terms of your lyrics?
It was easier because that kind of rehearsed Like slurping up the words.
Yeah.
So it wasn't too bad.
It kind of felt like, dang, I'm barely saying any of the lyrics Cause I mostly be swearing and at all that.
I wrote most sentences throughout most little bars.
So when, when you're rehearsing, are you usually rehearsing.
In front of people.
or I'm picturing because you know me, I'm not an artist, But I rehearse every day in the bathroom More often in the shower and then singing.
But where do you where do you typically rehearse and how do you do that?
Probably in the room or in the living room.
Gotcha.
With all honestly, I've actually drove down to this spot in Highland, like It's just Dirt road, like just empty field.
And I'll go park my car, put it on and just go crazy.
I'll run around the field rapping and stuff like that.
I feel like that would be a great theme for a music video.
Just like empty field Going ham out there with your your lyrics and what not.
So that would be awesome.
So you said you've recorded videos.
Have you done any music videos yet?
or is that something on your to do list?
Yeah, I've done two music videos.
It's been over a year since I don't, so I definitely need to do another one, but I'm just waiting for that track like, yeah, Gotcha... Yeah.
Then I want to do one for or just I really want to go all out for him, you know?
I mean, yeah.
So do you, do you create your own tracks too?
Yeah, I produce all of my stuff.
And write.
And sometimes it makes a master.
Sheesh.
So from beginning to end then.
Yeah.
Wow.
So how long would you say on average It takes you if you're, if you want to start a song?
Obviously a song generally starts or begins With inspiration From that point to completion once it's mixed and mastered.
How long is that process typically for you?
Sure, it could be.
Honestly, it could be two days or it could be like Three months.
Wow.
Okay.
So the two songs That you performed, how long did each of those take from beginning to to complete?
You know what?
That was... those like I just started making them And it honestly just finished them up I went to a studio headquarter studio in Moreno Valley to record those, actually, and they mixed in, mastered them.
But, uh, I just was making the beat and I was loving the beats.
And the first one weren't the chaos.
That beat is really important to me.
Just, it just sounds really like retro in like, space.
It just sounds dope to me to what I like.
And that Harley Quinn beat, that was just something I made.
I was going to sell it like I was going to put it up a because I I don't sell beats, but I really am trying to I think I'm at that level where people but then I was like, I will rap over it.
Gotcha.
Okay.
Save that one for yourself.
Put it in the pocket.
Basically, so for some of our audience, viewers who don't necessarily understand what mix in mastering is, can you explain that to, to me in them basically just getting the beat and getting your vocals and just leveling them out.
So whatever you could I mean, people go all crazy with it.
Sometimes they make it sound distorted over overdrive.
You like to some that wouldn't make sense, but it's like authenticity thing and.
So what do you prefer in terms of sound when it comes to mixing and mastering?
What's like your go to style for that?
I really haven't found a yet, to be honest.
That's still what I'm looking for, but I really just like to sound like powerful engines.
Like, I don't know, maybe sound ugly a little bit.
Maybe sound, I don't know, Like pretty, pretty gritty a little.
Yeah.
Or... Or just sound like n Just like.
Yeah, yeah.
Gotcha.
Okay.
And I know what, you're only 19 years old, so you still got some time to figure that one out.
So I know you also mentioned that you are from Highland and you are a graduate of Citrus Valley High School.
Did you ever perform for your score, any of your friends or on campus or any of that stuff When you...
When you, you really get into it then?
I got into it in high school like it was a freshman year.
I was like, I'm going to make music.
It was honestly with that era when like all the SoundCloud rappers were like, it's like SoundCloud became a big thing.
Everyone had SoundCloud.
Yeah.
And honestly, that's kind of like Spark and even though I don't like I'm not like a SoundCloud rapper or anything but that's really just like, like ex and just that era I was like, I need to do it too.
And then it didn't even start happening.
I didn't even drop a song to like Senior the beginning of senior year and, and COVID hit.
So... yeah.
I didn't really get to be like the high school rapper.
I wanted to be able to, Yeah.
I did a performance, just at like my house liked because I got friends who are doing, they were doing rock band.
Like I got friends who were in bands and stuff and we would just put together shows and I'd be like, I'm going to do a song.
Right, I'm going to Perform.
Yeah.
And it would just be like a like a low key thing.
Like, no one really knew I rapped or anything like that, but, Gotcha.
So you did mention COVID, the whole pandemic kind of twisted.
It took a turn.
I'm sure your senior year was kind of a very nonconventional as it was for many other people in many different industries and parts of the world, every part of the world and whatnot.
But how would you say that affected your creation of music and did that play to your advantage any point?
It definitely did play to an advantage because I was just home just making stuff.
And I don't know, it was like a strange time, Yeah.
And I'm a strange artist therapeutic too, And I'm a strange artist therapeutic too, I'm sure during that time.
Yeah.
It was just, it was a ... it was just like, yes, I think it worked out for me like.
It's cool.
I think I wouldn't have changed it, to be honest.
Like, I sucked, but I wouldn't want to not be class of 2020 because I was cool.
Like, Yeah, we was that one, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
To go through that, that's kind of cool.
That's awesome.
So you did mention or I mentioned obviously during that time was difficult for everybody.
But I think also during that year of 2020, which is your graduating year, everybody kind of found spent a lot of time doing random things like YouTube, watching extra YouTube videos or discovering new music.
What, what are some artists or videos that you discovered during that time?
That's a good one.
Um, there's artists and I've been into this artist, but it was during, it was just during those COVID hours that I just had his music all replayed and he honestly inspired me because it's like rap, but it's like different, but it's like crazy.
And he's “JPEGMAFIA ”.
I don't know "JPEGMAFIA".
Yeah, he was the one that like, like I was trying to find out what, what type of music do I want to make because I want to make this, but I can't really explain it.
And then when I heard his stuff, I was like, oh, this is like, he's like, doing what I want to do, right?
Right.
Yeah.
And he's just, yeah, he's I think he's the go.
That's awesome.
You discovered some musical artists.
I discovered my love for some ASMR videos during that time, people whispering in tune in my ear, put me to sleep anyways.
But so I understand, too, you are a huge fan of Michael Jackson.
And when did that when did that come about?
And have you been a fan since you were.... you were a child?
Honestly, I think everyone's a fan of Michael Jackson.
I wouldn't say I'm like I wouldn't say I'm like a mega fan.
But I mean, I grew up around Michael J... like Michael Jackson DVDs, and I was seeing those.
I was.. For a Second.
And you took a quick pause.
You grew up around Michael Jackson.
No.
Nonsense.
Yes.
I thought you were sharing an exclusive music.
I just I remember every day you wouldn't you just hear Michael Jackson at home, Right?
Yeah.
So what's your fav... Oh, so I'm assuming you're like a lot of your family is also MJ fan, right?
Yeah.
Nah.
Everyone.
What's your... what's your... What's your favorite song?
I was telling you, there's this one jazz song.
I can't I can't tell you.
I don't know.
I don't remember.
But the smooth criminal is like, fire smooth.
Fire...

And What else.
Can you... Can you do any Michael Jackson dance moves?
You know, I swore I used to be able to moonwalk, but I don't think I can do it in these brand new Converse.
You can't do in a..
Wait.
Can you do it for us just one time?

Nah, not hopefully I'm going to have some money and Just... Just make.
