Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwe continue our series looking at each of the gubanatorial candidates and their campaign priorities Tonight we turn to the Democrats starting with Congressman Josh Godheimer who's serving his fifth term in the House known for his moderate platform and as a co-chair of the bipartisan problemolvers caucus Senior correspondent Joanna Gaggis has more Not to be forgotten in this race for governor is Congressman Josh Godheimer who much like his colleague in the House Congresswoman Mikey Cheryl has also tried to paint himself as a fighter Quite literally in fact with this AI generated ad in Congress Godheimer got the impossible done passing infrastructure and gun safety laws and fighting for Jersey to stop Donald Trump's tariffs and chaos Now he's ready for the big one But the real question is can he generate the political muscle he'll need to win this primary race money sure helps and he recently transferred $10 million from his congressional campaign into a super PAC He says he's just playing by the rules and that he's the only candidate with a plan to cut taxes One cuts property taxes by about 15% for everyone Two helps middle class uh folks with a tax cut It says to renters we're going to give you a rebate to help you out And to seniors who as you know are on fixed incomes and really struggling Uh so many of them it it gives them a a bonus if they stay in Jersey when they hit 70 because we want people to be able to stay and be near their their loved ones Josh for Jersey as his slogan refers to himself has been staunchly pro- Israel and has repeatedly called for US backing of Israel in the conflict overseas That's led to protest from some Palestinian supporters He was also the only Democrat from New Jersey to vote in support of the Lake and Riley Act that allows detention of non-citizens accused of a crime He was also perhaps the loudest candidate decrying the congestion pricing in New York which is now well underway Rowan University's Ben Dorin says at the end of the day New Jerseyians care most about their wallets Are you going to uh vote on the situation in the Middle East are you going to vote on affordability and standing up to Trump i think affordability and standing up to Trump will be the bigger issues at the top of people's minds and I think that's why you're going to see more messaging on that In a race where most attacks have been against front runner Mikey Cheryl no one is talking about accusations against Godheimr that came out several years ago accusing the congressman of creating a toxic work environment for his staff It seems for now they're all focused on the issues These are his top priorities We need to stand up to Trump On the major issues from healthcare to the environment to gun safety every candidate shares the same goals And on the issue of abortion rights we will all stand up to Trump and his extremist attacks on women's healthcare It may be true all the Democratic candidates do share the same goals And Godheimer like Mikey Cheryl and Steven Fulip has about 5.5 million to spend in these last few weeks to try to differentiate himself A recent internal poll conducted by Godheimr puts him within five points of Cheryl But according to that poll Fulpup and Ras Baraka are even closer This is now what elections look like without the political machine picking the candidates But ask the average person in New Jersey who any of them are and you'll likely get no more than a shrug Maybe an AI boxer in the ring is just enough to get voters to remember the name Josh when if they get to the polls For NJ Spotlight News I'm Joanna Gagas
