I´M ISRAEL DUFFY, YOUR HOST FOR THE EVENING A SENIOR AT ST. LOUIS HIGH SCHOOL.
AFTER ABOUT SIX MONTHS OF A PANDEMIC WE´VE HAD TO ADAPT TO SOME CHANGES IN OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.
WE´VE ALSO SEEN A POINT IN HISTORY WHERE TEACHERS ARE FORCED TO LISTEN TO THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS.
TONIGHT WE´RE GOING TO DISCUSS EDUCATION AND THE UNHEARD EXPERIENCES OF STUDENTS IN VIRTUAL LEARNING FROM OUR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
TO START OFF, WE STARTED VIRTUAL LEARNING A PRETTY LONG TIME AGO.
DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY FIRST IMPRESSIONS THEY WANT TO SHARE WITH US?
CADEN, I FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY.

I REMEMBER, I THINK IT WAS FRIDAY, ACTUALLY, AND WE WERE ALL, YOU KNOW, GETTING TIRED OF SCHOOL.
IT´S KIND OF BORING AND CORONAVIRUS WAS JUST STARTING OUT.
I REMEMBER EVERYONE GOT THIS E-MAIL THAT SAID, YOU KNOW, THAT WE´D BE GOING ONLINE FOR A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE OF CORONAVIRUS.
I WAS REALLY EXCITED BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, AT THAT MOMENT ONLINE MEANT STAYING IN BED LATE AND DOING WHATEVER YOU WANT DURING CLASS.
IT DIDN´T END UP THAT WAY, BUT I REMEMBER BEING VERY HAPPY THAT WE DIDN´T HAVE TO COME INTO SCHOOL.

AT FIRST I WAS, LIKE, YOU KNOW, I THINK I CAN GET INTO THIS, BUT THEN AS TIME PROGRESSED I WAS, LIKE -- SITTING ON A CHAIR FOR WAY LONGER THAN I WANTED TO BE IN, I REALLY LIKE BEING AROUND OTHER PEOPLE, AND I DON´T LIKE JUST STARING AT A SCREEN.
IT´S NOT THE SAME DYNAMIC AS TALKING WITH EVERYONE ESPECIALLY IN SPANISH.
I CAN´T STAND SPANISH ONLINE.

IT´S PROBABLY SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR TEACHER IS SAYING IF YOU DON´T HAVE SOMEONE VISUALLY IN FRONT OF YOU EXPLAINING STEP BY STEP WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.
I DON´T WANT TO TALK ABOUT JUST THE BAD THINGS THAT COME WITH VIRTUAL LEARNING BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MUCH TIME TO TALK ABOUT THAT TYPE OF STUFF.
IS THERE ANYTHING GOOD THAT ANYONE´S GOTTEN FROM VIRTUAL LEARNING?
MYSELF, PERSONALLY, I´VE BECOME MORE ORGANIZED.
>> I FEEL LIKE VIRTUAL LEARNING IS A LITTLE BIT MORE COMFORTABLE BEING IN THE SPACE OF THE HOUSE, BUT THAT´S REALLY THE ONLY BENEFIT, IN MY OPINION, THAT I TOOK AWAY FROM VIRTUAL LEARNING.

OTHER THAN THAT, WHERE I DISAGREE WITH CADEN, I FEEL LIKE SOMEONE IS AHEAD OF ME, AND I KNOW THAT WE DON´T HAVE MUCH TIME LEFT AND I HAVE TO PICK UP THE PACE BECAUSE I DON´T WANT TO BE THE ONE PERSON THAT IS COMPLETELY BEHIND WHEN THE TIME IS UP.
>> SCHOOL CAN BE PRETTY STRESSFUL BY ITSELF, AND ESPECIALLY NOW THAT IT´S VIRTUAL, IT JUST FEELS LIKE THERE´S A WHOLE OTHER LAYER OF STRESS ADDED TO IT, HAVING TO BASICALLY FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO YOUR WORK ON YOUR OWN BECAUSE IT´S KIND OF HARD TO GET YOUR TEACHER AT THE TIMES THAT YOU NEED THEM.

HOW DO YOU GUYS FEEL ABOUT KEEPING YOUR ZOOM CAMERAS ON, AND HOW DID YOUR SCHOOLS HANDLE THAT?

WITH REGARD TO CAMERAS, I WOULD USUALLY KEEP MY CAMERA ON AND IN CLASS TIME WHEN I WAS DOING VIRTUAL, IN-PERSON NOW, BUT I KNOW SOME OF MY FRIENDS LAST YEAR WHEN WE WERE FIRST STARTING VIRTUAL AND WE HAD AN ENGLISH CLASS AND OUR TEACH YOU ARE HIGHLY SUGGESTED THAT WE HAD OUR CAMERAS ON.
IT WAS HIGHLY SUGGESTED.
SO IT JUST DEPENDS ON THE TEACHER, BUT USUALLY WHEN I DIDN´T REALLY CARE, I KNOW A MAJORITY OF THEM KEEP OFF THE CAMERAS, BUT TO ME IT´S COOL.
>> I GO TO PRIVATE SCHOOL, SO KEEPING IT IS A REQUIREMENT AFTER YOU GET YOUR PARTICIPATION POINTS, BUT I DON´T REALLY THINK IT SHOULD MATTER BECAUSE I´M TALKING, AND YOU´LL PROBABLY GET SICK OF ME, BUT FOR THE OTHER KIDS AND ARE QUIET IN CLASS AND I FEEL LIKE THE CAMERAS ARE AN ISSUE AND YOU HAVE TO SHOW YOUR FACE ALL OF THE TIME AND I´M LOOKING AT MYSELF AND IT´S STILL KIND OF WEIRD LOOKING AT YOURSELVES CONSTANTLY TO BE IN SCHOOL.

I HAVE MY CAMERA NOW, BUT I HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS THAT HAVE SWORN AGAINST NOT HAVING A CAMERA AND POSSIBLE TO KEEP A CAMERA.
I DON´T HAVE A PROBLEM KEEPING MY CAMERA ON.
IT DOESN´T BOTHER ME TO HAVE THE CAMERA, BUT IN HIGH SCHOOL THEY GAVE ME THE FREEDOM TO KEEP IT ON, AND I WOULD ALLOW THE CAMERA TO BE ON, BUT YOU KNOW.
KEEPING CAMERAS ON ARE QUITE THE DILEMMA, BECAUSE YOU HAVE STUDENTS THAT ARE SELF IS-CONSCIOUS ABOUT THE WAY THAT THEY LOOK OR DON´T HAVE THE COURAGE TO COME IN CLASS AND SPEAK OUT FOR THEIR CLASS OR EVEN HOME ENVIRONMENTS.
I WON´T SAY PEOPLE HAVE BAD SITUATIONS AT HOME, BUT MAYBE YOU DON´T FEEL COMFORTABLE SHARING IT WITH THE REST OF THE CLASS OR YOUR HOME, EVEN.
WE CAN MOVE ON TO ANOTHER TOPIC.
PARTICIPATION.
A LOT OF SCHOOLS ARE MAKING YOUR VIDEO CAMERA A PART OF YOUR PARTICIPATION.
I FEEL LIKE PERSONALLY, IT SHOULD BE BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF PARTICIPATION YOU GIVE TO A DISCUSSION LIKE HOW MUCH YOU´RE ADDING TO AN ACTIVITY OR GIVING INPUT ON.
CAN ANYBODY TOUCH ON THAT TOPIC?

IN SCHOOL YOU WERE WITH THE TEACHER AND YOU´RE WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND YOU WERE ABLE TO DO THAT, BUT ONLINE IT´S JUST A LOT HARDER.

SOME OF MY KIDS HAVE CLASS THEY DON´T HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY EVEN IF THEY WANT TO AND I FEEL IT´S NOT FAIR TO THEM BECAUSE THE CONVERSATION COULD HAVE GONE SO MUCH BETTER IF WE WERE IN PERSON.

I FEEL LIKE -- IT´S NOT BECAUSE OF THE CAMERAS, BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE´S CAMERAS ARE OFF AND WHEN SOMEONE ASKS A QUESTION, I THINK IT IS FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO TALK, BUT NOBODY TALKS SO THEY´RE WAITING FOR NOBODY TO TALK, AND -- THE CONVERSATION DOESN´T JUST REALLY HAPPEN AND YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR THAT ONE PERSON TO SAY SOMETHING OUT OF THE BLUE BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE IS DOING ANYTHING.
SO, YOU KNOW.

I HAVE TO TODAY, WE HAD A DISCUSSION ABOUT CAPITOL HILL, AND WE WERE JUST TALKING AND IT WAS MOSTLY EVERYBODY IN CLASS AND THE PEOPLE ON ZOOM WEREN´T REALLY ABLE TO PARTICIPATE BECAUSE YOU CAN´T CHATTER HOW WE´RE CHATTING, AND I HAD -- SOMEONE HAD TO CALL ME BECAUSE TOO MANY PEOPLE WERE TALKING ON ZOOM.
THEY CALLED ME ON ZOOM TO PARTICIPATE IN THE IN-CLASS CONVERSATION BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO GET THEIR VOICE HEARD BECAUSE WE WERE TALKING ABOUT RACE AND ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS AND IT WAS A VERY JAM-PACKED CONVERSATION.
SO I THINK THAT IT IS DEFINITELY A LOT HARDER TO MAKE YOUR OPINION AND TALK IN CONVERSATIONS AND ALSO BACK TO WHAT CADEN SAID ABOUT THE ONE PERSON ZEROING ON ZOOM.
I FEEL LIKE, YEAH, IT´S REALLY MESSED UP HOW THAT KIND OF FLOWS ON ZOOM BECAUSE YOU CAN´T SEE THE PERSON AND THAT´S WHYY GUESS YOU GET THE ON-CAMERA PARTIS PAGSZ.

I THINK IT´S A LITTLE TOO HARD TO BE A TEACHER AND TO TRY TO KEEP THE KIDS IN CLASS ENGAGED AS WELL AS THE OTHER KIDS ENGAGED.
MY IDEAL ZOOM WOULD BE EVERYONE BECAUSE THAT´S THE EASIEST WAY TO HAVE EVERY SCHOOL PARTICIPATE BECAUSE YOU´RE AN EQUAL AMOUNT THIS WEEK.

I FEEL LIKE WORKING MIKES -- A LOT OF PEOPLE´S MIKE DOESN´T WORK AND THEIR INTERNET DOESN´T WORK SO YOU DON´T COME ACROSS THEM AND IT DOESN´T WORK.
SO USING THE MIKE ON THE INTERNET, AND I FEEL LIKE I DON´T FEEL IT´S A NECESSITY TO HAVE ALL OF US ON THE SAME PLATFORM, BUT IT -- YEAH, TO HAVE ALL OF US ON ZOOM, I FEEL LIKE MOSTLY THE KIDS IN THE CLASS INTERACT MORE SO THERE IS MORE INTERACTION WITH THE KID, BUT -- YEAH.
PROBABLY TEACHERS CAN ENGAGE WITH THE ZOOM MORE THAN THEY DO.

THE ZEEN TIME IS EXCESSIVE.

FOR ME, PERSONALLY, YEPT TO SEND OUT NAME, BUT AT MY SCHOOL I´VE HAD TROUBLES WITH TEACHERS AND UNTIL THE LAST DAY OF THE QUARTER OR SEMESTER TO PUT IN GRADES AND I´M, LIKE, YO, WHAT´S GOING ON?
I´M STRUGGLING.
I HAVE COLLEGE WORK AND I´VE GOT STUFF THAT I´M GETTING TO.

MY SLEEP SCHEDULE IS MESSED UP AND THEN I´M TIRED FOR THE VIRTUAL IN THE MORNING AND IT´S ROOM TO REPEAT, ROOM TO REPEAT AND IT´S HARD TO KEEP THE GRADES UP, YOU KNOW?

I HAVE A STORY ABOUT MY HISTORY HOMEWORK.
I, YOU KNOW, TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES HAPPEN AND WE HAVE A LIVE GRADE BOOK AND WE CAN SEE OUR GRADES UPDATE CONTINUOUSLY, BUT MY TEACHER DIDN´T UPLOAD MY GRADE UNTIL AFTER THE ASSIGNMENT WAS DUE, SO I DIDN´T SEE THAT MY GOOGLE CLASSROOMS DIDN´T TURN IN THE ASSIGNMENT AND IT WAS MARKED AS NOT DONE SO I GOT A ZERO.
I WAS, LIKE, WAIT A MINUTE.
I HAD A 90-SOMETHING ON MY AVERAGE AND NOW IT HAS DROPPED DOWN TO A 70-SOMETHING, AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THAT IS.
SO IT´S JUST, LIKE, I NEED THOSE -- THOSE UPDATES REALLY QUICK SO I CAN GET ON IT BECAUSE I DON´T REMEMBER THE HOMEWORK.

WHEN I WAS ABOUT TO SAY WHEN I WAS GROWING UP LIKE I´M AN OLD -- LIKE, BACK IN THE DAY, MAN, MY MOM -- I USED TO BE SITTING AT THE TV SCREEN AND MY MOM WAS, LIKE, YOU HAVE TO MOVE OR BACK UP OR GO OUTSIDE AND DO SOMETHING BECAUSE YOU´RE LOOKING AT THAT SCREEN TOO LONG.
NOW WE´RE SPENDING EIGHT HOURS OF OUR DAY JUST STARING AT A SCREEN TALKING TO TEACHERS AND STUFF.
DOES ANYBODY HAVE AN OPINION THEY WANT TO SHARE ON THAT?
>> YEAH.
I DON´T WANT LIKE IT.
I JOIN ZOOM ON MY PHONE AND I WALK BECAUSE I´M A WALKER.
EVEN IN CLASS I HAVE TO WALK.
I CAN´T SIT DOWN IN A CHAIR.
THAT´S JUST ME.
YEAH.
>> PERSONALLY, I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE A POINT ABOUT US SITTING IN FRONT OF OUR SCREENS AND I DON´T HAVE THAT BIG OF A PROBLEM BECAUSE WE´RE OF THE GENERATION WITH THE SCREEN AND WE HAVE OUR FACES IN OUR PHONES OR LAPTOPS AND WHATEVER.
SO I DON´T HAVE THAT MUCH OF A PROBLEM BECAUSE I WATCH A LOT OF YOUTUBE AND VIDEO GAMES.
I´M NOT ON MY PHONE THAT MUCH, BUT I´M USUALLY ALWAYS ON YOUTUBE AND PLAYING GAMES AND I USUALLY HAVE A SCREEN RIGHT IN MY FACE, SO BEING ON ZOOM ISN´T THAT BIG OF A DEAL FOR ME.
>> YEAH, I THINK IT´S FUNNY THAT THOSE SAME TEACHERS ARE THE ONES THAT EXPECT US TO BE A MINIMUM EIGHT HOURS A DAY.
I DON´T WANT LIKE BEING ON THE SCREEN ALL DAY BECAUSE I HAVE TO WALK AROUND.
LIKE, I CAN WALK AROUND AND GO OUTSIDE AND SOMETHING, AND I HAVE TO SHARE MY SCREEN.
YEAH.
AND I DON´T WANT TO JUST PARADE ALL OVER MY HOUSE WITH MY SCREEN ON.
>> TO BE HONEST, ADDING ON TO I AM ON TECHNOLOGY A LOT EVEN IF I´M -- BUT SCHOOL EQUALS STRESS AND I´M WATCHING OR PLAYING VIDEOS.
NOW YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES PLAYING VIDEO GAMES WITH MY FRIENDS CAN BE STRESSFUL, BUT I FEEL LIKE IT´S A DIPS BETWEEN DOING HOMEWORK NON-STOP AND TALKING TO YOUR FRIENDS WHILE PLAYING A VIDEO GAME, YOU KNOW?
IT´S A DIFFERENT TYPE OF SCREEN TIME.

EXACTLY.
IT´S INTERESTING BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU´RE TRYING TO DO AND ALL THAT TYPE OF STUFF.
LUCKILY, I´VE HAD MY PARENTS LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER MAKING SURE THAT MY SCREEN TIME IS THE RIGHT SCREEN TIME.
