A BON VOYAGE INDEED.
MYKONOS IS CONSIDERED THE MOST COSMOPOLITAN GREEK ISLAND.
IT'S INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN FOR THE SHOPS, CAFES, AND CLUBS THAT LINE THE STREETS OF CHORA, ITS CAPITAL.
DUE TO ITS PROXIMITY TO DELOS, THE SPIRITUAL AND COMMERCIAL HEART OF THE ANCIENT WORLD, MYKONOS HAS BEEN FAMOUS FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

DELOS HAS BEEN A SACRED ISLAND SINCE AT LEAST 1000 B.C.

THIS IS WHERE YOU GET A REAL SENSE OF WHAT THE CYCLADIC ISLANDS ARE ABOUT, 'CAUSE IT'S A BIG CIRCLE OF ISLANDS AROUND [BOTH] >> THE ISLAND OF DELOS.

>> NOW, I KNOW THAT DURING THE TIME THAT ATHENS HAD CONTROL OF THIS, THEY DECREEDED NO ONE COULD LIVE OR DIE ON THE ISLAND.

BECAUSE A PLAGUE, A DISEASE HIT ATHENS IN THE 5TH CENTURY B.C.
THE ATHENIANS CONSIDERED THAT THAT WAS THE ANGER OF GOD APOLLO SENT TO THEM, SO THEY DECIDED TO PURIFY HIS BIRTHPLACE BY IMPOSING A VERY STRANGE LAW THAT PROHIBITED BIRTHS, DEATHS, AND BURIALS OF HUMANS ON THIS ISLAND.
>> FROM DELOS, ONE OF THE LARGEST ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARKS IN THE WORLD, WE RETREAT TO THE MAZE-LIKE PEDESTRIAN STREETS OF MYKONOS.
>> THIS IS WHAT THEY TALK ABOUT WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT MYKONOS.
THIS LITTLE ALLEYWAY, THE SMALL, NARROW PASSAGEWAYS.
>> SO ALL THESE BUILDINGS ALL TO YOUR RIGHT, ACTUALLY WERE THE PIRATES' HOUSES >> PIRATES' HOUSES?
>> YEAH, THEY USED TO DOCK THEIR SMALL, MANEUVERABLE SHIPS UNDER THEIR BALCONIES AND TAKE ALL THE LOOT ON THE BALCONY AND THEN COME OUT FROM THIS SIDE OF THE HOUSE AS IF NOTHING HAD HAPPENED.
>> ARE YOU SAYING ALL THESE JEWELRY SELLERS ARE PIRATES?

WHEN IN GREECE LAST YEAR, MY WIFE AND PRODUCER JULIE, TOOK A TUMBLE, BROKE HER ELBOW AND SPRAINED HER ANKLE.
THAT DIDN'T STOP US.
AFTER FINISHING OUR CAPPUCCINOS IN LITTLE VENICE, WE HEADED OUT OF TOWN TO DISCOVER THE REST OF THE ISLAND.
THE NICE THING ABOUT MYKONOS IS THAT THERE ARE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE VISITOR.
THERE'S CERTAINLY THE ANCIENT HISTORY OF DELOS, WHICH IS VERY CLOSE BY.
AND MORE THAN 32 BEACHES AND ALL THE WATER ACTIVITIES THAT GO ALONG WITH THAT.
INTERESTING ARCHITECTURE, FABULOUS NIGHTLIFE, AND THOUGH MOST OF THE PEOPLE MAKE THEIR LIVING FROM TOURISM, THERE ARE STILL PLACES ON THE ISLAND WHERE YOU CAN GET AWAY FROM ALL THAT.
I LOVE THIS LITTLE TOWN.
I WAS HERE ONCE BEFORE AND IT IS SO DIFFERENT THAN THE MOOD DOWN IN THE HEART OF MYKONOS.
>> IT'S THE VILLAGE OF ANO MERA SITUATED UP ON THE HILLS.
A LITTLE VILLAGE OF ABOUT A THOUSAND OF PEOPLE LIVING OVER HERE.
>> IT'S NOT VERY TOURISTY, BUT THERE ARE SOME REALLY NICE RESTAURANTS.
THIS IS THE LITTLE RESTAURANT I ATE AT LAST TIME, HAD A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE WITH THE PEOPLE.
THEY EVEN GAVE US A BOTTLE OF WINE TO TAKE BACK HOME.

PEOPLE HAVE LIVED IN THIS ISLAND SINCE 3000 B.C.
THEN AT AROUND 1650 B.C., THERE WAS AN EXTRAORDINARY VOLCANIC ERUPTION HERE THAT SANK THE HEART OF THE ISLAND, CREATED THIS 11-KILOMETER WIDE CALDERA, AND AFFECTED CIVILIZATIONS ALL OVER THE AEGEAN.
THE SETTING ALONE GUARANTEES THAT THIS WOULD BE ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR GREEK ISLANDS.
SANTORINI'S POPULARITY IS EVIDENT BY THE MEGA CRUISE SHIPS THAT ARE DOCKED HERE JUST BELOW THE MAIN TOWN OF FIRA.
NOW, THE NICE THING ABOUT BEING ON A SMALL CRUISE SHIP LIKE OURS IS THAT THESE MEGA CRUISE SHIPS WILL BE GONE BEFORE SUNSET.
ON THE OTHER HAND, WE'RE GONNA BE HERE 'TIL MIDNIGHT, SO WE'LL BE ABLE TO ENJOY SUNSET FROM OIA, ONE OF THE SMALL TOWNS HERE ON SANTORINI.
THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO SCALE THE ANCIENT CALDERA'S 1.200-FOOT FACE TO THE MAIN TOWN OF FIRA.
FIRST, YOU CAN HIKE THE 588 STEPS FOLLOWING ONE OF THE FRIENDLY AND FRAGRANT MULES, WHICH IS ANOTHER WAY TO MAKE THE CLIMB.
OR YOU CAN GRAB THE CABLE CAR, WHICH IS FAST AND COMFORTABLE.
SO, AMALIA, WHAT DOES THE CRUISE DIRECTOR DO?
>> ON A SMALL BOAT LIKE THIS, IT'S COORDINATING EVERYBODY'S LIVELY EXCURSION, BESIDES GIVING INFORMATION ON THE PLACE, ON THE ISLANDS, SO FINDING GUIDES.

HAVING WON ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM 200 YEARS OF TURKISH RULE IN 1898, IT JOINED MODERN DAY GREECE IN 1913.
NOW, IF THE HARBOR HERE AT RETHYMNO IN THE NORTHERN COAST OF CRETE LOOKS A BIT LIKE SITTING ALONG A CANAL IN VENICE, ITALY IT'S BECAUSE THE VENETIANS WERE HERE FOR 300 YEARS AS WELL.
THE TOWN IN ARCHITECTURE AND STYLE STILL REFLECTS ITS VENETIAN AND TURKISH PAST.
FROM RETHYMNO I HEAD INTO THE HILLS TO THE TOWN OF MARGARITAS, WHICH IS NOTED FOR ITS POTTERY.
GEORGIE, HERE IN THIS VILLAGE THE POTTERY MADE FROM THIS VILLAGE WAS FOR PEOPLE TO USE?
>> THEY PRODUCE CERAMICS FOR EVERYDAY USE.
>> EVERYDAY USE.
>> SOME OF THE FORMS HAVE ALREADY DISAPPEARED.
THEY DON'T PRODUCE IT ANYMORE.

ON THE OTHER HAND, MONEMVASIA, THE GIBRALTAR OF GREECE, IS MORE CONNECTED TO ITS PAST.
FOUNDED BY THE BYZANTINES IN THE 6TH CENTURY, IT HAS SEEN MANY CONQUERORS.
ONCE THE HOME OF THOUSANDS, TODAY IT HAS LESS THAN A DOZEN RESIDENTS.
YET WHILE THE UPPER TOWN LIES IN RUINS, THE LOWER TOWN PERSISTS AND PROSPERS WITH ITS RESTAURANTS, CAFES, AND SHOPS.
MONEMVASIA MEANS "SINGLE ENTRANCE."
AND AS IF PROTECTED BY ITS SOLE PORTAL TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD, THE TOWN CONTINUES TO REVEL IN ITS CULTURAL HISTORY.
EACH PASSENGER IS ON THEIR OWN JOURNEY.
AT THE CAPTAIN'S DINNER, THEY SHARE THEIR DISCOVERIES.
