One aspect to the recovery effort is animal rescue.
Kentucky Mutts Animal Rescue has been on the ground in London, helping to reunite animals that were lost during the storms and supporting the pet owners, who not only have to care for themselves, but their furry family members as well.
Kentucky Mutts Animal Rescue has rescued over 7000 dogs since starting operation in 2012.
But Vicki Crook, the executive director, says that the aftermath of the May 16th tornado is unlike anything her team has experienced.
The first day we were at Sunshine Hills, which was one of the hardest hit areas, one of our volunteers actually lived there and she was killed.
So, we went to Sunshine Hills.
We took race horses immediately.
And we're working with people just to find missing animals.
There is a little girl who had been on vacation, and her dogs were actually with her grandparents house that was demolished, and that was the first day they were there.
And the dogs were actually in the rubble.
We started moving stuff and helping them and carrying stuff, and we could hear a little hand.
And her name is Hannah.
I think she was a dog.
And I think is what she was.
Finally, some men with backhoes and stuff came in here, and she actually was found at the very bottom underneath the mattress.
Praise God she was not hurt.
Nothing wrong with her at all.
Kentucky much has helped to reunite several dogs with their families, but there's still a lot of work to be done for the animals in the area.
We still have several that are missing that we're working with.
Miss Kami to trap.
They're terrified, the doctor traumatized, and they're terrified.
So we're still working.
We're still working on that area.
And there's lots of cats missing that.
We're trying to work with forgotten felines, which is the cat rescue locally that we partner with.
And, they're out there setting traps for the cats, too.
Finding missing animals is just one part of Kentucky.
Much work in Laurel County.
They also transfer shelter animals out of the area and into foster care in order to make room at the local shelters for the strays found after the storm.
Our communities came together in a major way.
Corporate animal health and wellness has.
We have pulled dogs from the shelter to open space for them.
They're seeing a large influx of dogs.
So we pull and our dogs are going directly to the vet.
Our vets have been up here at the airport going free microchip and free rabies vaccines.
So it's it's all of us working together.
Kentucky Mutts has a tent set up at the London Corbin Airport, where pet owners can pick up free pet supplies or bring lost dogs to have their microchip scanned.
And for those who can't make it to the command post, Kentucky Match makes regular deliveries to the community.
We have frantic medicine.
We have crates, we have, bottles.
We have anything I could possibly want.
We have it.
They just need to reach out.
Crook and her team say it's been hard work, but serving the London community, human and animal, is work worth doing.
It's like watching a miracle to be truthful with me.
It's very rewarding for us to be able to reunite with the pets, with our family and every life that we see saved.
It's about hope and we all need some help right now with this.
What's going on?
Kentucky Mutts Animal Rescue can also help pet owners with long term care, like veterinary services and even temporary foster care, while families get back on their feet.
For Kentucky edition, I'm Mackenzie Spink.
That lady, I got a thank you.
Mackenzie.
Kentucky Mutts says that the most in-demand donation items are flea and tick medication, as well as pet food.
