I'm a master gardener volunteer, and I've been foraging mushrooms for about a decade, and I grow shiitake oyster mushrooms and wine caps at my house.
When you inoculate shiitake logs, you need to find a hardwood.
Usually, oak works good, and it needs to be harvested while the tree is dormant.
So like October to April, when all of the sap is still down in the roots, The tools that you'll need are safety glasses.
A plunger for the mycelium spawn the inoculated, sawdust spawn with shiitake mycelium and a, drill or an angle grinder with this high speed drill bit.
That makes drilling multiple logs way faster.
What we're going to do is drill, in a row, and then the second row will do offset.
So it makes almost like a diamond pattern.
And then we will plunge the mycelium into the log and it will, be sealed with a cheese wax.
And that will, keep it.
It will keep the mycelium in the log and it will help it, grow and start to eat the wood.
And then in about 12 to 18 months, you will have, cytokines coming out of your log if you keep it in a nice moist, wet environment.
