I'm your host, the VOID Jones.
And here's what we have coming up for you tonight.
TV issue men's golf hit the links and came away with another ugly act championship.
Laker lacrosse battled for 2 wins in 3 games this week while celebrating their senior class You-you.
Baseball played 5 games taking home.
3 wins.
Lakers Softball's.
What there we could beat the rival Bulldogs to the North in our future.
This week highlights the TV issue, women's golf team and Olivia Store.
It's making a major impact on the team this season pocket in Laker Nation as the Grand Valley State Sports report starts right now.
The Grand Valley State men's golf team went into the Glee actor Medal match play on Saturday is the number one seed and they lived up to that seeding taking down Purdue Northwest and Wayne State in route to the Clery Act championship.
>> This title of the 9 per program history for the Lakers.
She defeated Purdue Northwest 41 in the semifinals to advance to the Finals in the finals.
The Lakers pull off a clean sweep winning the title by a perfect 5 to 0 score.
These 2 rounds were medal match play for each match is scored by the cumulative number of strokes.
One rather than the number of kids want the player up by the most strokes after 18 holes wins the match up against the Pride Charles.
The long shot a 63 to win his match up by 8 strokes while group Coble shot.
67 win by 4 strokes.
Nick Krueger and Bryce Wheeler each one by 2 strokes with crew shooting.
A 66 and Wheeler carding.
A 68 Charlie Cooley card.
71 in his matchup in the Finals.
All 5 Lakers won their matchups but by.
>> Kruger and Wheeler, each winning there's by 5 strokes.
Troopers shot a 69.
We were shot.
A 71 of their victories.
Cooley won his match up by 3 strokes carting around of 70.
But the long shot a 68 to win by 2 strokes.
Couple shot a round of 70 winning by one stroke.
>> The men's golf team is now off until NCAA Regionals which take place from 11 to 13 at the Bridges Golf Club in Winona, Minnesota.
>> Winners of 8 in a row Gvsu lacrosse took down conference opponent Davenport, twice and regional opponent.
Walsh on the road to the issue is now 11 4 overall 5 and o in the Gliac and head coach McKenzie Lawler gives us more insight now on her team and how things are going coach.
Well, compared to have you.
Thanks so 8 in a row, you saw an opponent twice in the week in Davenport and sandwiched in between was Walsh.
But just your thoughts overall, some good wins, obviously with conference but also in the region.
>> Of course, the first game.
I think we had a little bit of a slow start with the original schedule.
Didn't have a plan to play Davenport on Wednesday.
There's just a makeup game from earlier in the year and we have the holiday weekend off with Eastern.
I just think the one-day prep on Tuesday before Wednesday was a little bit tough.
But then we really had a strong 2nd quarter going 11 1 and then kind of put the game in hand.
But I think the highlight of the week was definitely the big win against Walsh on Friday.
Those are really important when to give us a chance to make it to NCAA regionals this year.
And after close half, the team really responded after half time faced a little bit of diversity.
But Molly bursting any champagne.
And Maggie Hammer really stepped up in that game.
>> Yeah.
So going back briefly to your first one.
You mentioned there with Davenport, a Grande Valley winning that.
21 to 10 that big second to the corner there.
11 to one.
You outscore them.
So one of the biggest offensive outputs really of the year, right?
I mean, you've got many champagne with the 6 goals you've got out, shooting them big time in that category 30 to 16 and the draw controls 19 to 3.
So executing well there.
So that got us started very well.
But boy, it was the offense, like you say when she got roll and it was there.
>> We did.
I think our drought unit really stepped up in that 2nd quarter.
And we're able to capitalize on those offensive opportunities and really just dominate the time of possession in that quarter.
So it was great to to go on that strong run.
>> So 21 10, the final there in the win over Davenport.
So let's get into that when it's Walsh.
I will ask you specifics of what you said.
Half that.
That's probably strategy.
But the take me inside, what what's the mood at halftime there?
And then the explosion in the 3rd quarter.
But what what in general that you talk about?
>> I think the biggest spark was probably as always eclairs goal as time expired.
At the end of the 1st half, you know, we had a great defensive stop.
And, you know, everyone's kind of yelling with about 30 seconds left that we've got to get the ball up the field.
And so we pretty much ran coast to coast and was able to get a free position shot which capitalized with less than a second to go and put us up 5, 3, which I think I'm really gave the team a little more confidence with that.
2 goal cushion at halftime.
I'm Maggie Hammer really stepped up in the 2nd half when she scored 4 goals in 3 minutes.
And she's been a little frustrated with the last couple games of just not performing the way that she had maybe earlier in the season.
And I really to her leadership and her focus to turn it around and have agree to games on Friday and Sunday this week.
>> Yeah, that 2nd half, particularly the 3rd quarter at was a 0.
You're outscored them there and the draw controls.
Look at me.
I I don't know a lot, but I can see 20 to 2.
You've got to like that advantage.
>> We do.
And we had a similar advantage without on Sunday.
Again, Maddie has been so consistent.
She has great chemistry with my Libor singer and Ashley Roth on the circle.
I'm Sydney.
Stone and Aislinn are doing a good job.
Kind of is complementary drop, he says.
And so I think each game they're getting more competitive to, you know, go from 60% to 75, you know, up to 90 plus in those 2 games that was really great for them to set the tone.
>> Yeah, it was similar numbers to draw controls there the second time against Davenport because you hosted Ali winning at 14 to 5.
But 21 to one in the draw control category and the shots on goal 2078, which again continues that we've talked about that a couple of weeks now that that shooting and shots on goal continuing to get better.
>> Overall, it was better way to again, a bit of a tough start and that Davenport game on Sunday, it was senior day.
So there's just a lot of emotions.
And the pre game is a little bit different than usual and a lot of happy memories, but also tears of seniors careers wrapping up.
And so that's hard to all the sudden shift gears and start, you know, and a very important conference game be, unfortunately started that 1st quarter for 7 shooting and then really got back into, you know, what, we've been shooting in the streak and so was nice to see a bounce back from that.
>> That's right.
2 wins against Davenport in the middle was the win at Walsh.
So now conference foe, you've got the won a game.
You can go to the the up here.
Hopefully no more snow.
I don't know June into but the playing side right?
There will be an indoor.
>> We're getting that will play inside the dome.
I think it's nice.
You know, this is the week before finals.
And so to just have a single opponent, I think that helps our student athletes, you know, balance their other responsibilities.
Northern has done a great job this season.
They won a lot of close games.
And, you know, they have a handful of really competitive scores that we have to be aware of defensively.
So we're excited to hopefully handle that match up a little bit better than we did earlier this season.
>> Yes, so that will be at Northern Michigan.
That's going to be on the next Sunday of of this coming week.
3 o'clock start as you go up there, winding down regular season and conference play, but 11 for overall 5 and o in conference play in 8 straight.
So coach, thanks for coming in.
Appreciate your insight.
Thanks.
We'll be right back.
As the Grand Valley State Sports report continues here at Wgu.
Well, the past week was an important stretch of the schedule is Grand Valley welcomed regional foe Northwood and conference heavyweight Wayne State Allendale GVSU topped North would split the four-game series with the Warriors to run their overall record of 22 11 coach Jamie the telly and joins me now with more details for U.S.. Coach.
Welcome.
Thanks for having me.
Challenging week, weather wise, the opponent you're facing had to maneuver all the way through that.
You guys take 3 out of 5.
And just just give us a little bit of an overview of why this this week was so important that you just finished and we have plenty more coming up.
But why was this past week so poor?
Well, it's it's weeks like these that make being around the sport fund.
You play good teams that both have really good records.
They have good teams.
>> It's fun to go head to head with those types of teams.
You know that this part in this part of the season.
So, you know, the way that the weather is bad and it's it's just about every single weekend we've had to shift some stuff around which we did this weekend, too, because Sunday's weather didn't look very favorable, but we had to get 4 games in Friday Saturday.
So we did have a minor switch there.
No big deal.
Our guys came ready ready to play against north.
What it is is great.
We swung it really, really well on a on Tuesday there and is just really, really good approach from the start, guys, just, you know, execute what we asked them to execute, which was great.
And we carried into the weekend and played pretty well know when states a really good team, so to go to into its been with them for the weekend.
It was really good baseball, you know, all weekend long except for the one game on our part.
But it was 2 good teams going at it.
So a lot of fun.
>> Yeah, you began, as you say, Tuesday against the north would gliac opponent no longer but within the region.
Important 19 to 11 new kind of beat them up and kind of when you call these like a staff day, a bullpen day, you know, a lot of guys contributing pitching in this game and you get the 19 runs, including 5 in the 6, 5, months to do so.
You're really poured about late.
>> Yes, so those midweek games and as interesting says, talking to one of the umpires.
And he said, you know, I just hate on fire in the midweek games behind the plate, because there's, you know, it's always staff days.
And and teams are just running pitcher after pitcher out there.
And you never know what you're going to get in.
You get a little bit of weather, little bit of wind or whatnot.
Then it just kind of runs everything up a little bit.
But we were able to swing around to our part, everybody's in the same situation.
So it's it's apples to apples there.
So it's not like one team has this this major advantage by not playing a weekend before anything like that.
So >> again, 2 good teams going at it.
And I was I was happy to see we come out on top.
That's right to beat Northwood.
Wayne State, the big conference opponent them for for dancing around the weather.
You guys get that.
So and you're able to to start this four-game series with a bang.
They can logon a walk-off home run.
You guys win it by a 4 to final.
>> Yeah, maybe my memory is bad.
But I don't recall the last 21 years that I've been here that we've had a walk-off home run to win.
We've had a handful walk offs but never a walk-off home run.
So that was exciting against a good team to start the series.
That was awesome.
And they was just locked in for the bat to so very well prepared.
>> Yeah, Rick Husky, great job pitching is always 71 on the year leads the conference in winds and the Aria believe as well.
So doing a great job.
So you would take that game won in dramatic fashion fall in game 2.
That was a bit of a frustration because you had the lead late, 5, 2, They would get you then Saturday in the opener.
That was that what you touched on?
It was kind of a one pound game and all of this week.
But then coach, talk about that.
85 win.
Game 4 of the series with Wayne State.
This is the second game of the doubleheader Saturday.
It's really important because you want to win that the even up the series 2 to and you got it.
>> Yeah, it's interesting because if you get blown away like we did in that first game and they feel really good pitcher, too.
And that was part of it.
But we didn't have very well either or or pitch very well.
So it's kind of a a real well-rounded blunder in game one there.
And it's it can be a challenge to rebound and come back in game 2.
So, you know, in specially we came out in the top of the first gave up 5 runs.
So just like at on that on that note, and finally, we cut our losses.
And in our guys, you know, our guys are able to bet a lot of it and competing and hang around and just keep chipping away.
And just like that, we we tighten.
We've got a lead.
>> That's right.
Winning that 8 to 5 for Grand Valley there.
20nd win of the year.
Good work.
Bullpen here to Puckett.
When all the they came in some strong innings to help you kind of study things and get a chance.
>> Yeah, that was a big-time outing out of our bullpen.
I think once we went to the bullpen, I do know that we give up around sweet about 5 in the first and that was it for the game.
So a stray zeros.
Really good to see.
>> So Grand Valley with the threat of the 5 for the week against good competition.
All right.
So lots of stuff ahead on the schedule.
Let's talk about that.
Hillsdale will be at home coming up Wednesday.
And then it's a four-game series of Purdue northwest for the weekend.
>> So hillsdale's going to be another good regional point we've already played, wants their good team.
These these midweek games can go one way or the other.
The important thing for us is good practice.
I say this all the time.
This good practice lead a lead into our game is good.
Preparation demonstrate, you know, good, good practice habits, execute everything that we're trying to within our approach, both on the mountain at the plate.
And, you know, we can go in and compete with good teams.
Now Hillsdale is they can swing it.
So they do have some offense.
We'll see where that with arms because it's a midweek thing again.
So both teams are probably going to be staff and a little bit.
And then going into the weekend with Purdue Northwest, you know, they're playing better than they were earlier in the season.
They did the Wednesday once and I believe they be Davenport wants to so so they can they can so give you a game.
>> Yeah, absolutely.
So that's 4 again, one on Friday.
The double header Saturday been the single game on Sunday has to feel good to come into the week off a win like you guys had some Saturday in game 2 kind of propels.
You forward feels good.
But yeah, it's job throughout that week and a good look.
A heavier Jamie thing.
Yeah.
Hope and people.
Ron, thanks, right.
We'll be right back.
As the Grand Valley State Sports report continues here in Wgu.
She beat you softball.
Had a great weekend home downing Northwood, Wayne State and Ferris State from there win streak to 13 in a row and coached in.
The Callahan is here to give us more insight into the glee.
AFC's top team now with 30 wins on the year.
Coach.
Welcome kind of a congrats.
Not that I know Im passing because you're not focused on that right now.
But that is a big deal.
Great week, obviously rolling through this.
But a little bit.
Everything you kind of had some shut out and then you had some games you had when late?
>> Yeah, you know, I mean, the other teams are always kind of switching their pitching rotations around and stuff depending on where they think we're going to throw.
And and so sometimes we get the hand again, sir, there.
Number 2, we're or whatever.
Then we get the better pitcher, maybe in the second game.
You know, so you got to be able to play both ends of it.
And we've we had some close ones.
We had some on extra inning games over the last week.
And now we we battle.
We talk about resilience all the time.
And and the team stuck to that.
>> Yes, north with the first opponents of downing them a game 1, 8, nothing coming back.
We checked with the very nice job.
Pitching scattering the hit you when it 2 to one.
>> And this was the island with a walk-off sac fly to win it for what it was.
It was deep and we had runners on second and 3rd and speed at second base, particularly.
And so I knew it was deep enough, Allison and I wasn't taking any chances.
So and the girl made unbelievable catch.
But she fell down so that that opened the door for us to get that second run in.
>> So you grab both say the shot out of the game.
One of the 2, 1, and game 2 over Northwood.
Wayne State would be the second opponent for you for the week.
And again, this is a little bit of kind of both types of games.
You get another shot out 8, nothing and then coming back in game 2 in a way that 5, 1, Yeah.
>> Yeah.
We've been struggling a little bit this year, but we always know that they're pretty pretty scrappy team.
And so we knew we had to had to get the bats going with them.
And now we are fortunate to do that.
>> That tell us a little bit more about the Ingram here.
Complete game in this one.
He's able to get that with 86 pitches.
Just one run, walks 5 strikeouts.
4 hits really did a nice job.
>> Yes, she has.
And, you know, we want that was one thing.
We needed her to step up.
We needed her knowing that we had some, you know, graduation last year and things like that.
And then we knew Ashley was going to be the one that we were going to need.
And just a confidence level, her demeanor, her control, things like that.
I mean, she still has some work to get doing.
She knows that.
But at the same time, she's really stepped up to that role.
And and that's what we needed.
And we're grateful for that.
>> And to be honest, her 4th Glee Act, which are of the week honor, by the way, as well to show off of last week so that it was fair state, of course, big rival.
But this is the weather has not cooperated a whole lot in these games, but you win game one of the double header, a tendon.
Things are able to get that very nicely.
Game.
2 was postponed.
More on that a bit.
But you're able to get a get a good, good job here against a tough opponent or tribal.
>> Yeah, and conditions were great.
You know, they have a turf infield, you know, to the ball was wet most of the time.
And so our defenders that a great job of making sure the throws were where they needed to be.
And then Hannah, she was she just throwing well right now.
But then she's getting run support, you know?
So we broke it open the 4th inning day to get some some cushion.
And that was the nice part about that.
>> Yeah, it's with 5 innings thrown.
Just 3 hits.
No runs, no walks.
7 strikeouts Grand Valley picking up their 30th win of the year with this one over fair State, 33, the overall mark.
So another busy week which, you know, of course fingers crossed.
You can get these vendors.
You'll have a double header.
The fair schemes have been moved to the 30 of correct that the double have back to the fair says NAFTA make 2 trips.
But this week for Grande Valley, you're going to be with Saginaw Valley State, a double header that will be on Wednesday Saturday.
You'll have a double header with Davenport and then a double header.
Sunday's going to be at Wayne State.
>> Correct.
So second off the tough opponents, tough opponents.
We had some really tough games with them at their place here week and a half ago.
And so we know they're going to be ready.
They're going to come in hungry.
And and so we've we've got to be ready for them.
Same thing with that important Wayne.
Nobody is a slouch in our conference.
And so we know we have to be I'm prepared and his focus is weakened and everybody wants to to get us.
You know, we've got a target on our backs and now we just need to play our game.
>> And it's tough to I would imagine this coaches where, you know, seasons regular season, you can start to see an end to it to get one I potentially on the region are the postseason play.
But you want your team thinking about that.
Just that next game.
>> We are we focus on, you know, what is in front of us right now?
You know, one pitch of the time, you know, even one inning at the time.
And so we break it down when every inning, you know, when every pitch and the players have done a great job at that this year.
>> Absolutely.
13 straight for the Lakers softball 33 overall market.
Thank you.
Thank you.
We'll be right back.
As the Grand Valley State Sports report continues right here in the TV.
>> The issue women's golf has looked great this season as they head into the glee acts championed ships this week.
We'll take a look at one student athlete is contributing to a lot of the success this year.
Tom Cleary has the story for us.
>> The Women's golf roster, a Grande Valley right now has a Canadian player, one from Spain in still another from Argentina, all of whom found success a long way from home.
And yet the Lakers, most unlikely hero right now might be a player from Michigan whose grandparents raise their kids near Grand Rapids, including one who is now one of the top women's golf coaches in America.
That player is Olivia stole his mother.
Stacie, slow by the school is the women's coach at Michigan State and who with husband Jim stole raised.
Olivia, the pact are off to Allendale.
>> Yeah, you know, I think the beauty of Grand Valley for, you know, Stacey, coming from a mom's perspective and also coming from a coaching perspective was it's still close to home, but it gets her out of the home, gets her own unique experience in college somewhere.
She can grow on her own, become her own self.
>> I knew I didn't want to go far away.
Like the other schools I was looking at.
We're farther way, but I'm more of a homebody was like this is perfect.
Our Hathaway is good.
I love the school and its big so these are good.
I was like this is my place.
>> Like teammate Megan Myron, a youth hockey standout in Canada.
Olivia's path in Gulf hasn't been a straight line from the cradle either.
She embrace volleyball until her mid teens before informing her parents.
She might want to pursue goals just over a half-decade.
She's become a college standout.
Having won 3 individual title since October, including one tournament last fall when she tied the school record with a final round 6 under par score of 66.
>> I feel like I get his own like I'm like I just on the course.
I'm like I'm here liked.
I might as well play the best I can.
And I think the biggest thing is the pots are just on that day and I was hitting shots close the hole.
>> With length off the tee and power Stolz a player who bears watching in the future.
And if you're wondering how she ended up a Laker instead of a Spartan playing for her mom, well, you're not alone.
>> One of my biggest philosophies and recruiting is to always find that kid that their ceiling has not been met yet.
And those kids are always really exciting to me and a lot of potential tons of room for growth.
And Olivia was definitely that person.
>> In her second year of college golf, Olivia has helped Grande Valley become a national championship team contender thanks to their 3 victories and 5 other top-five finishes with only 4 healthy players last fall.
And 5 team members total this spring.
They force themselves into a close knit squad that values everyone's contribution.
>> I mean, I definitely think it brings us together off the course like we're all so close.
We hang out all the time in this league.
You don't have to draw like everything is just good together.
It's always in the back of your mind of, you know, who's going to get sick and and that and so forth.
But there was a time in my career where I had 10 on the roster and I'll never do it again.
Sell.
I'm happy with my 5 this year.
And we've got 2 more coming next year and not graduating anyone's pulling back at the magic number of 7.
>> While Olivia's mother and dad are just an hour or so down the road near Lansing, the way they've nurtured their daughters, athletic rise brings to mind with golf legend Sam Snead used to tell people about grip pressure on the club.
Partin you're holding a baby.
Birds need would say time enough to hang on to it but loosen up so you don't hurt.
It's a lesson Olivia stole and all of her family members seem to have mastered this year.
The Grand Valley State Sports report.
I'm Jon Cleary.
