And welcome back to an all-new episode of the Grand Valley State Sports report here in WG Vu.
I'm your host, Steve Lloyd-Jones.
And here's what we have coming up for you tonight.
TV issue lacrosse took Home Ugly Act tournament championship in Allendale.
Lakers softball continues to perform.
Well, taking 3 out of 4 this week.
It would be issued.
Baseball enters their final week of the regular season as they look to position themselves for the postseason walk in Laker Nation as the Grand Valley State Sports report starts right now.
Well, congratulations are in order for the GB issue.
Lacrosse team.
>> McKenzie Lawler's team top Davenport in northern Michigan when the gliac tournament championship for the 3rd year in a row which Lawler's here in the studio to tell us more as the Lakers look ahead.
The Midwest Regional tournament coming up in a couple of weeks.
Coach welcoming congratulations 3rd year in a row.
Thank you.
So you're able to get the winds over Davenport and Northern Michigan.
The latter of those very close.
But you have to deal with the different circumstances will go through that in a moment.
But let's start with a win over Davenport.
You get this done.
21 to 2 and yet you advance through that opening round of the of the conference tournament.
But personal milestones here for from a hammer and Molly Burke singer.
>> Yeah, Maggie got her 100th career goal and that game which was very well deserved in super exciting for her.
And she also broke the record for most games played as a Laker.
I don't think there's anyone more deserving.
Maggie has put so much into this program and her decision to be the one person or class to come back this year as a 5th year.
It has been great having her leadership so really excited that she gets to leave her mark on Grande Valley lacrosse that way.
And then Molly, also pastor 200 career points record.
She's just been such an offensive threat even though she's a two-way midfielder.
So great for her to reach that point as well.
>> Yeah.
For singer with 4 goals, Champagne had 4 hammer had 3.
Ashley Roth had 3 Sydney, Stone.
3.
Just go down the list here.
Your shots on goal dominated them.
25 to 5 and the draw controls 18 to 7.
>> Yeah.
The first 2 games.
I think we had great quarters against Davenport but didn't necessarily play a full 60 minute game.
And that was something that we're a little disappointed with.
And so I thought the team did a great job being really focused and execute our game plan and all 4 quarters.
>> Absolutely.
21 to Grand Valley down stabbing port that would bring up Northern Michigan 3rd time.
They've made some adjustments.
I will ask you to break that down.
That's probably into stuff you don't want to say publicly but they it's tight.
You have to deal with some injuries to 11 to 10.
You win this and had to come back in the 4th quarter to double them up.
42 in that quarter.
>> Yeah, they change their defensive game plan a little bit.
And I think, you know, for us we would have handled that probably a little bit smoother, like to say.
But unfortunately, Maggie Hammer head injury early on in the game.
She gave it everything she had trying to come back and kind of fallen a few more times.
But she got a great goal.
And again, that just shows the heart of her as a competitor and as a leader for this team.
And I think some of our other players really struggled stepping up.
You know, they've sometimes done that and it's a little bit easier to do it in a 21 to 2 type of a score versus when we're behind.
And I think we saw a little bit of nervousness and more from our team afraid in to make a mistake versus being excited to make the play.
That's going to give us ahead.
And there's no person we trust more as a coaching staff.
The Molly bursting or to do that.
And so I think she really kept her cool.
She was frustrated with where we were for sure and score, but she didn't let that impact your play.
And she had great cause turnovers, you know, to give us extra chances when maybe we made an offensive mistake, she was our go-to player, basically the entire 2nd half to get those goals.
I think that was just a great leadership moment for her that she didn't want this to be her last game with this team and really stepped up when we need it or.
>> Yeah, Grande Valley would win it.
11 to 10 is the final score.
There are up 5 to 4 at half-time.
So I help my neighbors and your had 7 goals.
7 of your 11, many champagne at to make a hammerhead once in the Stone one to to do that.
But again, it was a big 4th quarter.
The out shot him in the game on goal.
22 to 14 and again, you control the draw controls a 16 to 9.
But what's that like for your team where, you know, maybe not the case.
Every game you have to really buckle down, particularly in the 4th quarter to pull one out.
>> Yeah, it's a blessing and a curse when we're not necessarily in that situation, you know, and this win streak, almost all of our games have been close to 10 goal victories.
And so you have it may be felt that pressure spot in a while.
And so I think it's a great position to be and have that type of the game before, you know, hopefully looking to NCAA regionals, you know, but I think that's just where you kind of saw that tightness and, you know, a little bit of fear at times in our players.
But then it was also great to see those people who did step up.
You know, Miley, obviously a huge way.
But we also have other players off our one of our freshman Joe Dennison, even though we did when the draw controls its not to the number that we are used to winning.
And so we made a change in the end of the 4th quarter and she helped us win those last 3 draws and as a freshman when the game is is, you know, tight and it's tied.
And it's the first time you went into the game, just so proud of of her stepping up and, you know, being confident that you could make a difference.
>> That's right.
As you one of the 11 to 10 and those opportunities for people to do it.
And she did so that the regional tournament again, let's talk timeline a bit because it's dependent on when different conferences play their turn, their tournament championships.
The act is done, but you're waiting talking on the national scene.
You're waiting on other conferences here.
>> There are there's a few other conference tournaments that will play out next weekend there, but probably about half and half and finished this weekend and who has yet to play.
So, you know, we're waiting for some results in our Mac and the next regional rankings will come out on Wednesday.
But, you know, it doesn't matter the margin of victory.
That's not one of the NCAA criteria.
So we got a win and we needed to win.
And, you know, we're pretty confident that I think that will keep us in that 4 spot to be able to advance to postseason.
>> That's right.
Regular season title 3rd year in a row here as well conference tournament title.
Congratulations on that McKenzie and and good luck with your team as you're moving forward and hopefully more to come in the Midwest region.
Thank you.
We'll be right back.
As the Grand Valley State Sports report continues right here.
Wgu TBS.
You softball took 3 of 4 from opponents this past week.
A double header with Ferris State was canceled Sunday but not before a Grand Valley.
Split with Purdue Northwest have swept a doubleheader at Parkside.
Let's bring in head coach Dana Callahan with the latest coach.
Welcome.
Thank you.
So solid week, obviously you guys number one seed going into the conference tournament.
More on that in a moment.
But yeah, a lot of great things here.
The split with a double header with Purdue Northwest will begin there and then the double header sweep of Parkside.
But you guys got things going for 3 when they're over.
Purdue Northwest on the road and historic day for Libya goal.
>> Little does.
She was all out, you know, this weekend as she is every day and that was nice to see her get that recognition.
She has been one of the most consistent players we've had and in our program, right from day one, you know.
So it was nice to see her or her efforts throughout the last 4 plus years, you know, come to fruition with with that record.
>> That's right.
We're talking about case you don't know this levy ago will set the all-time GV issue.
A career hits record at 301.
Now she top Kati Marton with 300.
And how about Lydia getting 300 at a home run?
>> Yeah, you know, Susie loves that.
The home runs.
And Stephen, she's been, you know, extremely consistent, just getting base hits and hasn't had the as many home runs as she would like.
But she's doing just fine in that regard.
But yeah, that was that was a nice moment for her.
>> So that was the first game of the doubleheader here with the produce northwest on the road for Grand Valley.
Beyond us.
Great pitching 19th win of the season.
She picks that up 7 innings.
9 strikeouts, no walks.
Lakers win that for 3.
You fall in the second game.
So that would snap the winning streak will talk about that a lot.
But you you fall 5 to one and that one.
>> Yeah.
We left a lot of runners on base in both those games.
You know, Purdue's got a little bit smaller feel the wind was blowing out and they had a lot of dropped ball pitchers.
So we just kept him ground-ball ground-ball ground-ball.
We have bases loaded several times that we just couldn't capitalize on in both those games.
And the pitcher for the second game is one we haven't seen for a while.
She did a really nice job.
Keeping us off balance and stuff with a nice drop ball and a mix under speed.
So that will be one will have to prepare for moving into the conference tournament because I'm sure we'll see him again produces a strong team.
So, you know, sometimes a loss like that was after a win streak is is not all bad thing.
It kind of gives you any go check a little bit.
And and now we'd rather have it the past weekend as opposed to moving forward in the postseason.
So we reset little bit on Saturday.
You could tell that he was fired up and ready to play.
And and I didn't like the feel what that loss was.
So >> we'll be ready.
Moving forward.
Ba adjusted well on the Kenosha, Wisconsin against Parkside there.
The the next couple of games for the Lakers.
They would take both blinking Parkside 9 in the first game 5, nothing in the second game.
Good offense here.
My goodness.
Goble 3 hits again in the first game against Parkside Spicer with a couple Hollister with 2 island with to.
You're getting the offense as well as the pitching.
>> Yes, we had to change venues because of the rain and things like that in the field we played out was a beautiful field, but it was it was big.
And so there's a lot of space in the outfield and I think we had 3 triples in the first game and stuff like that.
So it's a it was nice to see them getting the ball to the outfield again after struggling the day before and we took advantage of that.
>> So the finale of the double header there at Parkside, the last of the games played this week for Grand Valley that win it 5, nothing playtech.
Excellent.
Pitching 7 innings thrown a couple walks couple of strikeouts.
She did great again.
Good offense here.
Clearly come or so homerun.
Wagner had 3 RBI Spicer.
Another couple of hits it.
You just spread it around and and you finish the week and that that double header with a real exclamation point.
>> Yes, and you know, like I said, the that's the fun thing about this team is it's not just one person that was relying on.
You know, everybody is getting their share of the hits and we're spreading it around, like you said, and you know, so if somebody is struggling, we know somebody else is going to be there to back them up.
And and you know, that's the fun part about it.
And it's just that's the way we play the game.
>> Well, Grande Valley talk about playing the game and this is the 5th consecutive year Grande Valley's one at least 20 conference games.
That doesn't happen by accident.
>> It doesn't.
It doesn't end soon.
Especially when you're playing teams 4 times do during the regular season.
They know you very well.
They know what your weaknesses are and what your strengths are.
And that's a challenge, you know, and our team has been very creative so that we're not too predictable, hopefully.
But we also, you know, we come to play.
We know that we've got the what we need to do.
And then we come ready.
>> Well, now you're a little bit of a holding pattern, as we say here going into the week.
You know, the gliac tournament is ahead.
You know where you're going to play Rosemont.
Illinois could play Thursday in the number one seed.
But you don't know who you're going to play it.
>> Correct.
The there's potential games today that are determine who that would be it.
For the most part.
It's locked up as to who is going to be there.
What 6 teams will make the tournament.
It's just a matter of how the seeding rings out and then who's going to play who on Game Day one.
>> So you get what some rest going into that.
How much do you, you know?
>> Practice workout leading into it.
We had yesterday off will practice light today.
Probably be a little heavier tomorrow.
We'll still left before we we go but will practice every day.
The steep dive sharpen the, you know everything.
A nice and tuned in.
We'll be ready to go on Thursday morning.
>> We should mention the double header with Fair statement said the beginning that was canceled due to weather.
And so the Lakers not able to play those who get that off day yesterday.
>> Can you teach me how to do a drop-off to Dan Rivera says the pitching do she would be the one to task on that.
One of the I mean that it's a changeup.
What is a drop ball into the brawl that's moving down.
Okay.
Okay.
So.
>> How you hold the high really said no direction of the spin and not the spin is moving down, you know, and a 12 to 6 was and it's going to move down curve ball is going to move side to side rise ball is going to move up.
So it's just all how the ball spins and what direction it's going to go.
>> All right.
You guys prepare for that and congratulations there on the 5th year 20 consecutive conference wins.
We'll be right back.
As the Grand Valley State Sports report continues here in Wg what was a week of close games for GVSU baseball.
But unfortunately, the Lakers found themselves on the wrong end of 3 one-run losses to Davenport, Iowa now stands at 27 15 overall and 14, 11 with an ugly act.
Time to welcome in head coach Timmy that he'll youn with more for us.
Jamie, Welcome.
Thanks for having me.
It's tough.
You guys battled here.
My goodness.
So we're going to go through it.
Close game, close game growth.
It's an unfortunate they would just edgy each time.
But you guys persevered were pushing through there.
>> Yeah, yeah.
I mean, we played we played well.
They're just a couple key moments.
And then it's a game, a little things when you play really good teams, which doubt Davenport has some talent.
When you played talented teams, it's it's a game, a little things.
And that's about to execute when when the game see the execute and another couple situations that we had opportunity that that they capitalize on.
We did.
So, you know, unfortunately, we lost it for.
>> Yeah.
Well, the big inning game of that series that you played there, that one on Friday, kind of a little bit of a flavor of that as you were you lose it.
3 to 2 had a late lead in this game maker.
Koski was fantastic.
Again, 8 innings thrown 9 hits the scattered that one.
Ron couple a walks.
It's 5 strikeouts.
Get some good production in the middle of that word or 2 and you you get a chance.
But then they come back and get.
>> So next been just a repeat every single week that we talk.
It feels like I'm telling the same story about him.
Just so reliable, throwing strikes and competing in and he threw really well.
He deserve to get a win out of that, unfortunately.
And I think 8 the 9th inning, we give up around each and in just a little mistake, I would just mentioned a minute ago, just, you know, those little things.
And that's the that's the time we need to bear down and make a play, make a pitch, you know, drive in a run, move around or whatever it takes.
You know, then they they persevere.
>> McCormick go Brunson each with a couple of hits in that game.
The Lakers fall 3 to 2 that first of the games against Davenport that on Saturday doubleheader you would bounce back.
Kobe Phipps good outing on the Hill.
He picks up a 7th win and you win this 1, 3, to one.
>> So kind of story of our team is, you know, no matter what if we start off slow, we always battle back as we were getting shut down for about 5 innings offensive.
Lee and Kobe just kept us in the game.
He kept on strikes getting outs when he needed to.
We had some timely defense behind him.
And then in the 6th inning there's a seven-inning game and the 6 inning we kind of came alive with the bats and put up 3 and help them out to, you know, to to pull off a comeback win there.
>> Yeah.
Grande Valley, the big 6th inning, 3 run 6 hits totals.
So you kind of had to they could do with not a lot of offense there but that strong pitching keeps you in it.
You want it 3 to one.
So that was the first game of the doubleheader Saturday game 2.
This would have a weather element to it here.
Eventually this game would be settled on Sundays.
You you have the makeup to it.
They would end up winning it in the suspended game 8 to 7.
>> So we had, you know, we had opportunity.
We had a lead and then they had a seven-run, I think is the 4th inning that a seven-run inning.
And there's so many little things in there that we had a hard time just kind of stopping the bleeding, so to speak and and just cut our losses.
And, you know, we give up a run or 2, OK, but cut our losses.
We just we weren't able to do it.
But but again, the story of our team, we battled back and made it 87.
We had opportunity.
Vaughn is 87.
We had opportunity with the bases loaded and then the next day, you know, we finished the day.
The 9th inning just another opportunity bases loaded in and their center fielder made great plays that it could have been sacrifice flies.
Just kind of a bang-bang play home playing came through the really big throw.
Got a good hot catch.
Tag amount.
We're done.
Yeah.
>> Yeah.
5 for the Lakers with the fall in the finale of the doubleheader Sunday and then or that that last game.
They had the suspended game that made it up last of the series.
>> Some good hitting in here to what kind of a core work.
He was swinging.
A good stick along with the guys.
Yes, O'Connor has been swinging really well.
The last to know several weeks.
He's had a good season so far and hopefully continues into, you know, into our postseason.
But he's he's really find some barrels some in-person power.
Great to see.
>> Yeah, so this again, we want to go to my are kind of back up to the big picture.
This hurts because you really one of these games to help set you up in the regional tournament.
Tell us more about sure.
>> Well, that's that's what we want to do.
Every year is get into our regional compete, have an opportunity to go to our World Series, which we've done several times.
You know, it's it's something that we're we're striving toward working working hard, you know, to try to get to that point.
Yeah, this this presents a little bit of a hurdle.
But, you know, as close as lot of these games have been, you know, moving forward, there's no reason that our team can compete were down a lot of players.
And it doesn't even matter.
We don't even talk about.
That's not even a thing.
It's just next man.
And let's let's go compete.
You know, let's compete with what we've gotten and getting around just like we did this weekend.
Those are good baseball games.
You know, whoever comes out on top, you know, unfortunately it it wasn't us.
But >> whoever wins those baseball games, those are great baseball games.
Yeah.
And the key thing to remember is it could be you who comes out the next time on top because you're right there with them.
All right.
Coming up this week, another really busy week for you here.
Davenport will finish up with a one-game U.S. situation with them Wednesday and then its second, all about the state for for coming up Friday through Sunday at home as well.
>> Sure.
So it's conference play and we want to finish strong as we possibly can.
You know, our our guys worked hard all season.
There's absolutely no.
Let's right now we're still striving forth our best.
But and as you mentioned, you know, you go into a tournament play after hopefully playing well this weekend.
Anything can happen.
You know, there's no reason that can't be honest.
There's no reason.
So, you know, keep working and seeing what happens at the end of the day.
>> Yeah.
That resiliency of the baseball really forces you to have that done that I mean, day in day out.
But then big picture of the season.
Yeah.
To push through those tough times.
>> Yeah.
It doesn't mean that you really get tested.
It's becomes more of a mental test than it is physical.
There's so many things right now that I'm not sure that we've got to work on all these physical skills.
It's not about being locked into the moment so that we can perform in the moment.
I'm not so much.
Let's go correct.
All the things we're not to that point.
We've got good players and a good team, but it's more about performing in the clutch them and that's what we need right now.
>> Yeah, taking lessons that you need, but also probably forgetting stuff you don't need to think about to hear from the past.
Well, Jamie, appreciate you coming in.
And I know it's a tough week by way of the scoreboard, but still good things to look ahead to Florida.
You have me.
All right.
We'll be right back.
As the Grand Valley State Sports report continues IWGP.
>> The women's golf roster, a Grande Valley right now has a Canadian player, one from Spain in still another from Argentina, all of whom found success a long way from home.
And yet the Lakers, most unlikely hero right now might be a player from Michigan whose grandparents raised their kids near Grand Rapids, including one who is now one of the top women's golf coaches in America.
That player is Olivia stole his mother.
Stacie, slow by Dick's Toll is the women's coach at Michigan State and who with husband Jim stole raised Olivia, the impact or off the Allendale?
>> Yeah, you know, I think the beauty of Grand Valley for, you know, Stacey, coming from a mom's perspective and also coming from a coaching perspective was it's still close to home, but it gets her out of the home, gets her own unique experience and college somewhere she can grow on her own, become her own self.
>> I knew I didn't want to go far away.
Like the other schools is looking at.
We're farther way but I'm more of a homebody was like this is perfect.
Our Hathaway is good.
I love the school and big cities are good.
So it's like this is my list.
>> Like teammate Megan Myron, a youth hockey standout in Canada.
Olivia's path in Gulf hasn't been a straight line from the cradle either.
She embrace volleyball until her mid teens before informing her parents.
She might want to pursue goals just over a half-decade.
She's become a college standout.
Having won 3 individual title since October, including one tournament last fall when she tied the school record with a final round 6 under par score of 66.
>> I feel like I get his own like I'm like I just on the course.
I'm like I'm here liked.
I might as well play the best I can.
And I think the biggest thing is the pots are tough on that day and I was hitting shots close the hole.
>> With length off the tee and power Stolz a player who bears watching in the future.
And if you're wondering how she ended up a Laker instead of a Spartan playing for her mom, well, you're not alone.
>> One of my biggest philosophies and recruiting is to always find that kid that their ceiling has not been met yet.
And those kids are always really exciting to me and a lot of potential tons of room for growth.
And Olivia was definitely that person.
>> In her second year of college golf, Olivia has helped Grande Valley become a national championship team contender thanks to their 3 victories and 5 other top-five finishes with only 4 healthy players last fall.
And 5 team members total this spring.
They force themselves into a close knit squad that values everyone's contribution.
>> I mean, I definitely think it brings us together off the corps like we're all so close.
We hang out all the time in this league.
You don't have to draw like everything is just good together.
It's always in the back of your mind of, you know, who's going to get sick and and that and so forth.
But there was a time in my career where I had 10 on the roster and I'll never do it again itself.
I'm happy with my 5 this year.
And we've got 2 more coming next year and not graduating anyone's pulling back at the magic number of 7.
>> While Olivia's mother and dad are just an hour or so down the road near Lansing, the way they've nurtured their daughters, athletic rise brings to mind with golf legend Sam Snead used to tell people about grip pressure on the club.
Partin you're holding a baby.
Birds need would say tight enough to hang on to it but loosen up so you don't hurt.
It's a lesson Olivia stole and all of her family members seem to have mastered this year.
The Grand Valley State Sports report.
I'm Jon Cleary.
>> And that's all the time that we have this week here in the Grand Valley State Sports report.
GVSU Baseball will wrap up the regular season with 5 games this week.
