What happened?
-This is a free and cool style shift unique to Japanese animation.
-Whoa!
Cool.
-Anyways, do you know how people catch the flu and show symptoms like fever and coughing?
-I don't.
-It's all because of viruses.
Viruses are matter too tiny to see with your eyes.
Bacteria are small, as well, but they are unicellular organisms.
Viruses are much smaller.
-That's real small.
-These viruses actually can't survive on their own.
-Huh?
Then how do they live?
-They enter other creatures and multiply themselves.
-Multiply?
-Yes.
Viruses have just one objective.
-Together: That is to multiply.
-Oh.
You multiplied.
-Together: We often hear of flu epidemics on the news, right?
That's the result of viruses multiplying.
-That's scary.
-In modern science, viruses are not considered organisms.
A virus is a pathogen smaller than ordinary sized bacteria.
And in the case of influenza, it's made up of about 95% protein and 5% RNA.
-I can't believe something so small is making me feel so bad.
-I know, right?
Isn't it amazing?
This is a virus.
-Hello there, Virus.
-Hello there.
-Of course, on its own, it can't do much harm.
But once it enters the body... -[ Groans loudly ] -When it enters a living host, the virus begins to multiply and evolve even though it doesn't have the structure of a cell and isn't a living organism.
-So it's not alive, But it is?
Weird.
-The basic structure of a virus is a genome surrounded by a protective protein shell known as the capsid.
Understand?
The flu virus is what causes symptoms like cold shivers, fever, muscle pain, and also sluggishness.
-Ugh.
That's so scary.
-Medicine doesn't seem to be effective if not taken within 48 hours of being infected.
-Oh.
Oh, Yeah.
So why do we wear masks?
-Masks generally aren't for our own protection, but rather to make sure we don't infect others with viruses.
-Oh, I see.
-That's right.
And do you know what is important for keeping viruses from entering into our bodies?
-Mm...oh.
Don't go see anyone and don't talk?
[ Buzzer ] -Not quite.
The best prevention is washing your hands.
-Washing hands?
-The influenza virus has a phospholipid membrane.
And soap can break down this outer layer.
When we wash our hands with soap, the virus's ability to infect drops dramatically.
-So, washing our hands is important.
-That's right.
Hand sanitizers also have the same effect as washing, but once you're infected, it's best to rest and get plenty of sleep.
It's also important to drink plenty of fluids like tea, juice, and soup.
-I'll drink a bunch of juice.
-Please do.
So, to recap, wash your hands frequently to prevent infection and wear masks to prevent spreading any infections you have to others.
-Wash your hands to protect yourself and wear masks to protect others from the virus.
-That's right.
-It's weird that cells are organisms, but, for some reason, viruses are not.
-They aren't in how we describe things today.
But our understanding may change in the future.
Huh?
-Wha?
-[ Cackling ] We're here to multiply and make more of our own.
