Such policies are at the center of debate over parental rights
The Hanover Township Board of Education voted Tuesday night to repeal Policy 5756, a measure that had been in place to prevent schools from outing transgender and nonbinary students to their families. That's the district where the debate over parental rights and transgender student policies set off a firestorm during a second reading on Tuesday.
Board members voted to repeal what's known as Policy 5756, introduced to the state in 2018 to prevent schools from outing transgender and non-binary students to their families.
It was all part of an effort to make a more inclusive environment.
Well in May, Hanover adopted a new policy requiring educators to disclose a student's gender identity to their parents, prompting the state attorney general's office to step in filing a civil rights complaint against the district and requesting an emergency court order to stop Hanover from carrying out the new policy.
Hanover now joins other districts, including Colts Neck and Millstone, that have abolished 5756 altogether.
As other districts are also considering appeals.
Supporters say the move allows parents to be part of the conversation.
Opponents argue the move is anti LGBTQ and eliminates other protections.
