I've lived here for 45 years, and during that time, it used to be very hard to find white pelicans in town.
we're pretty sure that these guys wintered in the southern, and south central United States, down like in Texas, of Florida or stuff.
And they work their way up and they make this wonderful stop at chambers Grove Park.
That's where they it's what you call staging, where they gather in a group and rest and pig out and get ready for their final stretch of migration.
They're really fun to see right now.
They're getting ready for breeding.
And so virtually all the birds, males and females have what's, ornithologists call a plate.
and it grows in the spring, and then it kind of disintegrates and falls off, after the breeding is done, they're really cool to see.
They have these plumes sticking out the back of their heads, especially the males.
And they're so exciting.
And this is the time we get to see that right here in town.
