THE SEVERAL YEARS SANDWICHED BETWEEN ADOLESCENCE AND ADULTHOOD IN A CHILD'S LIFE ARE PIVOTAL FOR DETERMINING WHO AND WHAT THEY WILL BECOME.
SO MANY FORCES ARE AT PLAY, SO MANY INFLUENCES THAT CAN EITHER REINFORCE AND ENCOURAGE A PERSONALITY, OR COMPLICATE AND DERAIL THAT VERY ACT OF BECOMING.
NANETTE ROBERTS, FULL DISCLOSURE, HAS HAD TWO OF MY KIDS IN HER EUREKA HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA CLASS THESE PAST SEVERAL YEARS.
THEY'VE ALSO BEEN IN HER PLAYS.
THEY ADORE HER, AS DO MANY OF THE OTHER STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN HER CLASS AND STARRED IN HER MANY EHS PRODUCTIONS.
SHE IS DEMANDING BUT RESPECTFUL, AND HAS DEVELOPED A CHEMISTRY WITH HER STUDENTS THAT HELPS THEM BE THE BEST THEY CAN BE, ON AND OFF THE STAGE.
SHE IS A SINGER, AN ACTRESS, A DIRECTOR, A WRITER, AND SEEMINGLY ABOVE ALL A GIFTED EDUCATOR.
WE SIT DOWN WITH HER TO DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTS EDUCATION, THE CHALLENGE OF RUNNING A ONE-TEACHER DEPARTMENT, AND HOW CREATIVITY HAS HELPED SHAPE HER LIFE.
WE ALSO DISCUSS THIS CURRENT PRODUCTION OF MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT, HOW THE KIDS HAVE RISEN TO THE OCCASION WITH A COMPLICATED PLAY, AND WHY IT'S ABSOLUTELY PIVOTAL THAT THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT WHAT THESE KIDS, AND THEIR TEACHER, ARE DOING.
THEY ONLY GET A SMALL ANNUAL ALLOCATION OF $700 FROM THE DISTRICT, SO A HUGE PERCENTAGE OF WHAT THEY DO IS SELF-SUPPORTED.
THAT MEANS YOUR ATTENDANCE MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.
BUT FIRST, THE NEWS.
IN AN UPDATE TO AN OLDER STORY, THE EUREKA POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK THAT A DEAL HAS BEEN STRUCK WITH CITY ADMINISTRATORS TO ADDRESS THE DEPARTMENT'S ONGOING STAFFING SHORTAGES AND SUPPORT OFFICERS IN THE FIELD.
SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, DETECTIVE JOSEPH COUCH, EPOA INTERIM PRESIDENT, ISSUED A STATEMENT ASKING FOR THE COMMUNITY TO UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES IT'S FACING, AND TO HELP SEE THEM ADDRESSED.
COUCH ASKED FOR CITIZEN SUPPORT, EVEN WHILE CLEARLY STATING THAT THE UNION'S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CITY WAS A GOOD ONE.
THIS WEEK, COUCH ISSUED ANOTHER LETTER, STATING THAT A DEAL HAS BEEN REACHED AND THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CITY AND ITS OFFICERS WAS STRONGER THAN EVER.
“EUREKA POLICE DEPARTMENT ALONG WITH THE EUREKA POLICE DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF, CITY MANAGER, CITY COUNCIL AND OTHER CITY HALL ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF HAVE BEEN WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP TO ADDRESS STAFFING NEEDS, ” THE LETTER STATES.
“TO THAT END, THE EPOA AND THE CITY OF EUREKA UNDERWENT CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS DURING THE MONTHS OF JANUARY AND FEBRUARY.
DURING THESE NEGOTIATIONS, IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY MANAGER AND OTHER CITY HALL ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF SUPPORT AND VALUE EPD PERSONNEL AND THE CRITICAL PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICES THAT WE PROVIDE TO THE COMMUNITY.
” ACCORDING TO COUCH, THE NEW CONTRACT WILL HELP WITH RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT.
AS ALWAYS, COUCH REITERATED, PUBLIC SAFETY REMAINS THE OFFICERS' AND THE CITY'S TOP PRIORITY.
HERE'S MY CONVERSATION WITH NANETTE VOSS, ENGLISH AND DRAMA TEACHER FOR EUREKA HIGH AND DIRECTOR OF THE PLAY, SPAMALOT, PREMIERING THIS WEEKEND.
>> I CHOOSE "SPAMALOT" BECAUSE I FELT INSTEAD OF A MUSICAL MUSICAL CAST I HAD A COMEDY CAST.
IT IS HIGH COMEDY.
I KNEW THEY COULD PLAY UP THE COMEDY.
PEOPLE SHOULD SEE IT BECAUSE IT IS YOU KNOW LOVINGLY RIPPED OFF OF MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOE LAY GRAIL.
IT HAS ALL OF THE ELEMENTS OF THE MOVIE PLUS SONGS AND THEN PLUS SOME SONGS THAT ARE HAVE BEEN IN MONTY PYTHON.
AND THE STUDENTS ARE HILARIOUS.
THEY GET IT.
THEY GET THE COMEDY.
THE PHYSICAL COMEDY IS INCREDIBLE.
WHEN I SAY THINGS LIKE KING ARTHUR MAKE YOUR ENTRANCE A LITTLE BIT LONGER.
I WANT TO PATSY CLOP THOSE COCONUTS LIKE YOU'RE DOING A CHA-CHA.
LIKE YOU'RE DOING SOME RUMBA.
THEY'RE LIKE OKAY, AND THEY DO IT.
AND I'LL SAY OKAY I NEED YOU TO LAY ON THE FLOOR AND HOLD THIS THING AND I PROMISE IT'S GOING TO BE FUNNY.
THEY DO IT.
>> WHAT WOULD YOU SAY FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF DOING A HIGH SCHOOL PLAY.
AND TALK ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF THE WORK THE KIDS PUT INTO THIS.
IT'S A LOT OF REHEARSALS AND LATE NIGHT DEDICATION.
SO CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT HOW IT IS TO BRING ALL OF THAT TOGETHER.
>> SURE.
IT IS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT.
BUT IT TAKES A LOT OF PLANNING.
A LOT OF PLANNING AND PREPARATION AHEAD OF TIME FOR -- ASSUME THE WORST.
ASSUME THE WORST WITH THE BEST INTENTIONS.
WHAT I MEAN BY THAT THAT IS THAT HIGH SCHOOLERS CAN STRUGGLE TO COMMIT TO THINGS.
AS PERHAPS YOU KNOW.
AND THAT MANY OF THEM ARE EXCITED ABOUT BUT THEY'RE ALL SUPER EXCITED ABOUT DOING COOL STUFF.
SO YOU'VE GOT TO CAPITALIZE ON THE EXCITEMENT AND LIKE MAKE THEM RECOGNIZE THE COMMITMENT WITHOUT MAKING THEM TRAMMED.
IT'S LIKE YOU'RE DATING THEM AND MAYBE YOU WANT TO BE A LONG-TERM THING BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO SCIR THEM AWAY.
YOU HAVE TO BE HERE 45 TIMES A WEEK BUT YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A RA REALLY GREAT TIME.
SO IT'S GOING TO BE TOTALLY WORTH YOUR TIME.
THAT'S HOW YOU'VE GOT TO PLAY IT TO THE KIDS.
PLANNING IT INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT.
THE AMOUNT OF THINGS I HAVE TO PUT IN PLACE AHEAD OF TIME.
IF I THINK ABOUT "SPAMALOT" "SPAMALOT" IS A TECH HEAVY SHOW.
THERE'S SO MANY PIECES INVOLVED.
SO FROM A BIG SET TO LIKE HOW DO WE DO HAND GRENADES.
COWS FLYING OVERHEAD.
AND GIANT RABBITS THAT MAKE THIS SHOW STAND OUT FROM OTHER SHOW.
THEY'RE CONSTANTLY CHANGING LOCATIONS.
HOW WAY AHEAD OF TIME WHAT ARE THE QUICKEST WAYS.
I WANT TO THAT TO BE MY MAIN SET PIECE.
AND THEN WHEN I THINK ABOUT TECH AROUND THAT WHAT DO I WANT LIT.
I NEED THE TOP OF THE CASTLE LIT.
AND THE FLOOR.
WHERE IS THE SOUND GOING TO GO.
HOW MANY PEOPLE AM I GOING TO BE MIC.
ALLOF THE PROPS INVOLVED ALL OF THE TECH INVOLVED, ALL OF THE BUILDING INVOLVED IS STUDENT DRIVEN TOO.
AND THE FACT THAT I HAVE TO CONVINCE THEM AGAIN LIKE WE'RE GOING ON THIS CRAZY JOURNEY TOGETHER.
YEAH WE'RE GOING TO SPEND FIVE SATURDAYS TOGETHER, AND I'LL PROMISE I'LL GET YOU PIZZA.
ALL OF THOSE THINGS LIKE TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE IT'S WORTHWHILE.
I THINK THAT THE HARDEST PART IS THAT I AM YOU KNOW YOU'RE AT HELL WEEK.
SOHEL WEEK THAT EVERYTHING COMES TOGETHER.

I THINK THAT THE PART OF IT I COULD BE THE SORT OF LEADER WHO FREAKS OUT, WHO GETS MAD YELLING AT THE KIDS.

LEADING IN PARTICULAR HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE THERE IS A FIRMNESS AND A GENTLENESS AND HEAVY PREPARATION INVOLVED IN ORDER FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW WHERE THEY FIT IN THIS GIANT PUZZLE THAT WE HAVE, AND WE'RE GOING TO PUT ALL THOSE PIECES TOGETHER.
THIS WEEK WE'RE AT THE POINT WHERE YOU LIKE YOU'RE PRETTY CERTAIN YOU HAD ALL OF THE PIECES WHEN YOU STARTED BUT MAYBE ONE OF THEM HAD FALLEN UNDER THE TABLE.
NOPE, THAT'S SOME LINT I DIDN'T NEED THAT.
THERE'S SOME OTHER STUFF UNDER THE TABLE AND OH THERE'S THAT PIECE.
AND YOU HAVE A REALLY AWESOME PICTURE.

THESE ARE FORMATIVE EXPERIENCES FOR THESE KIDS.
AS THEY'RE DEALING WITH US AND YOU'RE GOING THROUGH A STRESSFUL WEEK.
YOU MAY HAVE FIRMER, AND YOU'RE NOT MAD.
IS THE WHOLE PROCESS FIGURE IS OUT HOW TO CARRY FROM ANYWAY AND TO FRUITION.
BUT CONSTRUCT FOR THEM A VALUABLE EXPERIENCE THEY'RE GOING TO CARRY FOREVER.
WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL I WAS IN THE BAND FOR GREASE, AND I CHERISH THAT MEMORY.
IT'S ONE OF MY MOST VALUABLE MEMORIES FROM HIGH SCHOOL.
AND JUST REMEMBER THAT WAS SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF MY LIFE.
TO A BAD TEACHER IT WOULD BE ANOTHER FIVE DAYS OF THE WEEK.
I KNOW YOU'RE NOT THAT.
I'VE HEARD FROM BOTH OF MY KIDS HOW YOU ARE AN EDUCATOR AND INSPIRER.
AND HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT RESPONSIBILITY AND HOW YOU THINK ABOUT IT?
>> MAN, I NEVER DON'T THINK ABOUT IT.
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
I TAKE THIS JOB -- I TAKE IT REALLY SERIOUSLY.
I LAFAYETTE A LOT BECAUSE IT'S JOYFUL BUT I WALK INTO EVERY ONE OF THESE EXPERIENCES I'VE DONE THIS BEFORE AND THIS IS MY 11th YEAR HERE AT EUREKA HIGH SCHOOL AS THE DIRECTOR OF THE PLAYERS HERE.
BUT I'VE BEEN MUSIC DIRECTING AND DIRECTING SHOWS FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS NOW.
I'M ARMED WITH ALL PAST SUCCESSES AND PAST FAILURES.
AND SO THE WEIGHT OF ANY SHOW WEIGHS HEAVILY UPON ME, AND IN THAT PLANNING PROCESS I REALLY THINK ABOUT -- I DO THINK ABOUT OKAY WE'RE PROBABLY NOT GOING TO GET ALL THIS STUFF DONE BUT I'M GOING TO PUT IT ON THIS CALENDAR.
IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD.
NO THIS IS PART OF THE PROCESS.
I ANTICIPATED THIS.
THAT'S SOMETHING MANY OF WILL REMIND YOU'RE THE COSTUMES OR DUE.
IT WAS ON THE CALENDAR.
AND THEY GO OUT AND TEASING EACH OTHER WHICH IS AWESOME.

I FEEL THE WEIGHT OF MAKING THIS WEEK SO MUCH MORE PLEASANT THAN IT COULD BE.
I HAVE HORROR OF HIGH SCHOOLISH EX135ER7B9SS OH MY GOD WHY ARE WE GETTING YELLED AT ALL THE TIME.
HOW CAN I SHOW THEM THAT I ORCHESTRATED THIS BUT THEY DID IT.
THEY WERE THE ONES PRACTICING ALL THE STUFF.
LEARNING THE SKILLS.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER.
AND REALLY I GAVE THEM THE TOOLS TO MAKE THIS REALLY COOL THING.
AND I'M STILL HERE.
BUT I'M NOT ABANDONING THEM.
I'M NEVER GOING TO BLAME THEM.
THERE'S SO MANY TIMES I COULD HAVE DONE THAT BETTER.
KIDS NOT KNOWING THE CHOREOGRAPHY.
THAT'S ON ME.
I DIDN'T DO I9.
WHICH IS NOT ENTIRELY TOO.
I AM VERY SERIOUS ABOUT IT.
AND I COMMIT DEEPLY TO THESE KIDS.
LIKE YOU'LL NEVER NOT SEE ME AT A REHEARSAL OR TECH DAY.
I'M ALWAYS GOING TO BE THERE.
THEY'RE LIKE MY LITTLE FAMILY.

SO ALL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL I DID THEATRE.
I WAS LIKE SOME OF THESE CRAZY GUYS I WAS IN MULTIPLE SHOWS AT THE SAME TIME AND I TOOBLING A BREAK FOR COLLEGE.
THOUGH I DID GO TO COLLEGE BRIEFLY FOR MUSICAL THEATRE, AND I HAVE LOTS OF TRAINING THAT'S HODGEPODGED TOGETHER.
I DO NOT HAVE A DEGREE IN THEATRE.
I'VE TAKEN ACTING, DANCE AND VOCAL COACHING.
I AMASINGER ABOVE ALL THINGS AS FAR AS MYSELF CREATIVELY.
IT'S VOCAL WORK THAT I'M A SINGING COACH.
I'M IN A BAND JIM ALLMAN BAND YOU SHOULD CHECK IT OUT.
WE'RE ALSO AWESOME.
BUT AS A SINGER LIKE THAT'S REALLY LIKE MY JOY IN PERFORMING COMES THROUGH SINGING.
THEATRE WAS ALWAYS A VEHICLE FOR ME TO SING WHEN I STARTED OUT.
I REALLY LIKED ACTING TOO.
AND IT'S STILL IT'S NOT MY FIRST LOVE.
BUT I LOVE IT OBVIOUSLY.
ONCE I STARTED TEACHING MORE I TAUGHT AT CR AND TAUGHT ENGLISH FOR EIGHT YEARS BEFORE I MOVED TO THE HIGH SCHOOL.
WHEN I WAS TEACHING THERE I STARTED MUSIC DIRECTING AT EUREKA HIGH.
I STARTED WORKING WITH OTHER DRAMA TEACHERS.
AND THEN WHEN I GOT MY CREDENTIAL IT ALL HAPPENED.
I HAD ALREADY BEEN THERE.
THE DRAMA TEACHER WAS LEAVING AS I GOT MY CREDENTIAL.
I SLID INTO THE ENGLISH JOB AND THEATER JOB HERE.
SO ALL OF THE WRITING WORK I DO AND THE TEACHER AND ALL OF THE THEATRE WORK I DO MADE SENSE ONCE I GOT THIS JOB HERE.
I STILL PRACTICE A LOT OF THEATRE.
I'M IN A SHOW RIGHT NOW FOR RED CURTAIN A NEW BRAIN THAT GOES UP IN MAY THAT'S A MUSICAL.
IT'S A REALLY COOL MUSICAL YOU'VE PROBABLY NEVER HEARD THAT.
I RUN RED CURTAIN AT THE FIFTH AND D STREET FORMERLY DCRT.
SO MY WORK IN THE THEATRE SINGING ON THE STAGE AND ACTING A LITTLE BIT IN SHOWS TO OVERSEEING WHOLE THEATERS AND THEATRE PROGRAMS WHICH IS CRAZY.
IT'S CRAZY TO ME.
I NEVER WOULD HAVE IMAGINED THAT.
>> THE VALUE OF ARTS EDUCATION IS SOMETHING THAT'S NOT DEBATE BUT NEGLECTED OVER TIME, AND THERE'S BEEN THIS HEAVY RELIANCE OR ON STEM EDUCATION WHICH IS VITALLY IMPORTANT.
I THINK IT'S JUST AS IMPORTANT TO FOCUS ON KIDS BEING CREATIVE AND BEING ABLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN WAYS THAT CHANNEL ENERGIES THAT MIGHT MANIFEST IN NEGATIVE WAYS IF THEY'RE NOT HANDLED.
DO YOU FEEL -- FIRST OFF HOW DO YOU FEEL -- OBVIOUSLY YOU'RE A DRAMA TEACHER.
HOW VALUABLE AND WHAT IS THE VALUE OF ARTS EDUCATION FOR KIDS.
YOU SEE KIDS WHO HAVEN'T HAD A CREATIVE OUTLET BEFORE AND YOU GIVE THEM.
WHAT GOOD IS IT FOR KIDS TO BE ON STAGE OR PERFORMING THAT KIND OF THING.

I LOVE ARTS INTEGRATION, AND ARTS EDUCATION IS I THINK THE BEST VEHICLE TO APPLY EVERY DISCIPLINE THAT YOU LEARN INDIVIDUALLY IN A CLASSROOM.
SO THE ARTS IS MATH.
AND THE ARTS IS HISTORY.
AND THE ARTS IS SCIENCE.
AND THE ARTS IS ENGLISH, AND WRITING AND CRITICAL THINKING.

>> AND IT'S ALWAYS AMAZING TO ME THAT IT'S NOT ALWAYS SEEN AS A CAPSTONE.
IT IS NOT NEXT TO STEAM EDUCATION IS BETTER STEM EDUCATION.
BECAUSE SO MUCH OF THE ARTS IS SCIENCE.
SO MUCH OF IT IS CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
IF YOU THINK ABOUT LIGHTING AND SOUND AND THING LIKE THAT AND MORE ADVANCED WAYS.
JUST ON THE GROUND LEVEL I DO OFTEN IN THEATRE BASIC THEATRE CLASS THE ONE THEATRE THAT IS COMPRISED OF THREE DIFFERENT THEATRE CLASSES AS FAR AS THE COURSE CATALOG GOES.
SO I'VE GOT STAGECRAFT KIDS AND THEN A LOT OF BEGINNING THEATRE KIDS.
>> THAT'S ONLY ONE PERIOD.
>> ONE PERIOD TEACHING TO THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF STUDENTS WHO SIGNED UP FOR THREE DIFFERENT CLASSES.
FIGURING OUT HOW TO ACCESS THEM ALL.
I'VE DONE IT FOR 10 YEARS.
I'VE CERTAINLY FIGURED OUT I TAKE THE ADVANCE KIDS AND THEY END UP OVERSEEING THE YOUNGER KIDS.
BY THE END OF THIS YEAR THE ADVANCE KIDS WILL BE IN CHARGE OF PROJECTS WE DO IN CLASS.
BUT THE VALUE FOR ARTS EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS WHO STRUGGLE MAN I CAN'T EVEN TELL THEATRE CLASS IS LIKE THERAPY AND THE STUDENTS WOULD SAY THAT TOO.
WE START IN A CIRCLE ON THE FLOOR EVERY DAY.
THEY HAVE JOURNALS.
THERE IS SOME PROMPTS AND SOMETIMES IT'S SILLY LIKE DO YOU SHAMPOO YOUR EYEBROWS AND SOMETIMES IT'S DEEPER WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT ADULTS WOULD HAVE TELL YOU THAT THEY DIDN'T TELL YOU AND YOU FOUND OUT ON YOUR OWN.
THAT'S A WHOLE CLASS BECAUSE IT'S AMAZING WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU CREATE A SPACE THAT IS SAFE WHERE THEY FEEL SEEN.
OF COURSE I KNOW EVERYONE'S NAME.
I KNOW SOME OF THEIR INTERESTS.
I TYPICALLY KNOW WHAT THEIR FAMILY SITUATIONS AND WHAT THEY HAD FOR BREAKFAST.
IT'S AMAZING HOW KIDS WHO LIKE NEVER FELT COMFORTABLE BEFORE SHARING JUST TURN INTO LIKE THESE BEAUTIFUL HUMANS THAT ARE CONFIDENT AND THEY FEEL LIKE THEY CAN BE THEMSELVES IN MY SPACE.
I HAVE LOTS OF TRANSKIDS, LOTS OF GAY KIDS, AND THEY FEEL SEEN.
AND THAT'S SO VALUABLE.
WE WERE DOING MONOLOGUES.
I HAVE THIS KID HE'S A JUNIOR.
THERE'S A FRESHMAN WHEN HE STARTED.
HE WAS REALLY QUIET REALLY SWEET GUY HIS FIRST TIME AROUND.
BARELY COULD UNDERSTAND WHAT HE WAS SAYING THE TIME.
HE'S A JUNIOR.
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME TAKING THIS HE DID HIS MONOLOGUE TODAY.
IT WAS MEMORIZED THE DYNAMICS WERE BEAUTIFUL THE EMOTIONAL INTENTION BEHIND IT WAS INCREDIBLE.
AND LIKE YOU COULD TELL THAT HE HAD HEARD EVERYTHING I HAD SAID, EVERYTHING WE HAD TALKED ABOUT.
ALL OF THE EXAMPLE VIDEOS WE WATCHED.
EVERY MOMENT OF REFLECTION.
YOU JUST DID IT AND IT SHOWED TODAY.
I'VE SEEN HIM IN OTHER CLASSES.
WAS STANDING BY HIMSELF ON THE STAGE.
I CAN'T IMAGINE HIM HAVING A PLACE OTHER THAN THEATRE CLASS TO HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE, AND I ALSO HAVE KIDS IN SPECIAL DAY CLASSES WHO COME TO MY CLASS.
I'VE ALMOST EVERY YEAR.
I HAVE A STUDENT WHO'S BLIND AND THAT'S RAD BECAUSE THAT REALLY CHANGES THE DYNAMICS OF OUR ROOM.
LOGAN IS HERE SO WE'RE GOING TO PLAY THIS GAME DIFFERENTLY SO HE CAN EXPERIENCE IT.
BUT LIKE I LOVE IT BECAUSE THERE NO OTHER CLASS THAT ANYONE CAN TEACH WHERE WE HAVE LIKE CRAZY EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTERS IN LIKE CIRCLE TIME AND THEN WE ARE BELLY LAUGHING IN LIKE FIVE MINUTES ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE.
AND EVERY KID IN THERE NOTS EACH OTHER'S NAMES.
NOT JUST ME.
THEY KNOW EACH OTHER.
AND THEY NEVER WOULD HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER IN ANY OTHER CLASS.
>> YOU'RE TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO GO TO THE SHOWS THIS WEEKEND AND NEXT WEEKEND.
HOW IMPORTANT IT IS THAT THE AUDIENCE SHOW UP AND SUPPORT HIGH SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE.
>> THIS SHOW HAS BEEN A CRAZY TRAIN RIDE BECAUSE THE AUDIENCE NEEDS TO KNOW.
WE JUST GOT OUR AUDITORIUM AFTER BEING CLOSED FOR A YEAR AND A HALF.
THERE IS NO TECH DIRECTOR IN THAT AUDITORIUM.
THE LIGHTS AND THE SOUND AND HE HELPS ME BUILD SETS.
THIS PARTICULAR SHOW HAS BEEN A LABOR OF LOVE.
IT HAS BEEN CALLING IN FAVORS TO ALL OF MY THEATRE FAMILY.
AND THESE OTHER HUMANS THAT ARE WAY OUT DON'T WORK AT EUREKA HIGH SCHOOL ARE TEACHING HOW TO HOW TO HOOK THINGS UP.
THE AUDIENCE NEEDS TO KNOW.
THIS SHOW HAS BEEN SO MUCH WORK FOR US, JOYFUL WORK BUT SO MUCH WORK.
BUT THE THINGS THAT HAPPEN CHINAED THE SCENES.
WE'VE PAID FOR A TRIP TO NEW YORK.
WE NEED TO REFURBISH OUR SUPPLY.
I WOULD LIKE TO GO TO ASHLAND AND RIGHT NOW OUR ONLY FUND-RAISING IS THROUGH DOING SHOWS REALLY UNLESS WE DO OTHER WEIRD FUND-RAISERS.
SO COME AND SUPPORT US BECAUSE THE ARTS ARE COOL.
THE KIDS ARE AMAZING.
AND THE EFFORTS THEY PUT INTO THAT AND THAT FUNDING THE ALL WE GET.
I ONLY GET $700 FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICE EVERY YEAR FOR MY PROGRAM AND IT IS FOR THIS SHOW IT WAS $2,500 FOR THE RIGHTS.
AND THEN WE CERTAINLY HAVE SPENT PROBABLY ANOTHER $1,500 TO $2,000 IN SUPPLIES OF PROPS AND CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND ALL OF THOSE SORTS OF THINGS THAT WE NEED TO PUT IT ON.
WE'VE SPENT PROBABLY ABOUT $5,000 JUST TO GET THE SHOW GOING.
BUT NUMBERS ARE IMPORTANT PEOPLE.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR PROGRAM IS SELF-SUPPORTING.
>> IT IS SELF-SUPPORTING.
AUDIENCE IS OUR BREAD AND BUTTER.
WE HAVE CONCESSIONS.
WE'LL BE SELLING SWAG THAT ACCRUED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
SO THERE WILL BE OTHER WAYS TO SUPPORT THE EUREKA PLAYERS.
IT IS THE ONLY WAY WE CONTINUE TO FUNCTION AS A DEPARTMENT.
SOFIA WHO IS NOT IN THE PLAY HAS HELPED OUT THIS YEAR BY CREATING THE POSTER.
PAM LOT WILL BE ONCE AGAIN, SPAMALOT WILL BE SHOWING APRIL 5TH, 6TH, 11TH, 12TH, AND 13TH AT 7:30 PM, AND APRIL 7TH AT 2 PM.
TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR, $10 FOR STUDENTS AND SENIORS, $15 GENERAL ADMISSION.
IT PROMISES TO BE A ROLLICKING GOOD TIME.
