Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(dramatic music) - Good evening and welcome to Horizonte, I'm Julio Cisneros.
Tonight we restart our show with a look at Hispanic voting trends.
A recent New York Times/Sienna College polls A reI decide howto vote is I look at if the candidate has held office before, I look at what they've done in that office.
I very seldom actually pay attention to the party affiliation.
However, as it happens, the party affiliations, since I am a Republican, I am a Republican for a good reason, and that is that in most cases, I am in accordance with what the Republican Party stands for.
- I really look at the issues that are important to them, their platform, and seeing that they're going to provide a platform worthy for all Arizonans.
- [Jose] The social media, again, doesn't have any influence on me except the extent that it enables me to find out what the candidate has done in the past.
- [Cesar] I always ensure myself that the person that is going to represent me, my family, my neighbors, my friends, my constituents as a state representative, that they're doing it for the right reasons that they're doing it for Arizona's integrity.
- [Jose] I used to prefer by mail but I am not going to be voting by mail anymore.
I like the convenience, but I have become aware that there are certain problems that come up as part of voting by mail.
So from now on, I'll be voting in person in my precinct.
- [Cesar] Arizona really is a model for mail-in voting.
But of course, I still love seeing people at the polls exercising their most fundamental right.
- The reason why so many Hispanics are leaning towards a Republican, the policies that have been supported by the Republicans are much more in line with what the good percentage of the Hispanic population believes.
- The Democratic Party has to do a better job at telling the narrative, telling the story of what it really means to protect our fundamental rights.
- Right now the country's very much in the wrong track.
We're in the wrong track in terms of foreign policy, we're in the wrong track in terms of immigration, border of security, the economy.
- It's sad when we start hearing individuals lose faith in their country.
We need to do more, not just politicians, but members of our community, we need to wake up - Join us to talk about Hispanic voting tr catch up to other ethnicities as far as voting patterns.
about 30% of the electorate being Latino and it's lower than that across the United States, I think it's about 20%.
But I agree with everything thathe people in my family, I think about their concerns are about the economy and getting good paying jobs and being able to retire and having good schools for their kids or their grandkids.
Those are, I think the driving issues that we see going forward.
And I think, again, I mean we've seen polling that shows And I is put your money where your mouths are.
It's not gonna happen by osmosis.
Latinos aren't just gonna automatically become more conservative ois I think a little bit of an angst out there in the electorate about how things are going.
Optimistic in the long-term, but in the short-term
