Thank you.
- I started playing guitar in probably the mid to late '80s.
- [Host] Ladies and gentlemen, Hope Anchor!
(lively rock music) - The Clash is my favorite band.
I mean, I got 'em right here.
(team cheers) Being a father forced me to get sober, and quitting drinking is probably the biggest thing that has affected the way I write music in that I wasn't sure, when I quit drinking, would I still be able to visit the dark place that is where I write from?
(rock music drowns out singer) My songs aren't about unicorns and glitter.
They're about the ugliness of life.
After a few weeks sober, I picked up my guitar, and I was able to go back there with intent, with focus.
Like, being in more control of my creative destiny in each piece of music that I'm writing.
♪ Running away from the truth ♪ I suffered from anxiety that led to my alcoholism for, you know, decades, and I feel like, right now, my guitar playing is an extension of my anxiety, which makes it me.
♪ But the rain won't stop ♪ I'm Terry Linehan.
I play guitar in Hope Anchor.
I find that, right now, my largest pursuit is to try to incorporate the guitar tones of the '80s, but use more of a Tommy Dorsey blueprint for how to compose music.
I really like the lush soundscapes of, like, the '40s and '50s, like Henry Mancini's work, like the "Breakfast At Tiffany's" soundtrack.
♪ I can't live here anymore ♪ Hope Anchor's sound is definitely post-punk.
It started out as more of a replacement sort of thing, and then we decided to kind of widen our sonic footprint, if you will, to be more along the lines of Lords Of The New Church or Killing Joke, working in those influences with the already established '80s stuff like The Cure and Jesus and Mary Chain.
The current lineup is Rob Senecal, Robbie Shaggs on bass, Paul Myers on drums, and Steve Demers on guitar, and Pip, Paul Everett, on vocals.
In the back of my mind, I'd always known that I wanted to play with Pip.
It came together pretty organically and naturally.
Like, our writing relationship, we're able to write stuff really easily together.
My first band started in 19.
I almost said 1889.
That would've been something.
That would make me a miracle of science, huh?
I started my first band in 1989, and it was called Voice of Reason, and then we turned into a band called Smear.
So, after Smear, I was in a band called Water Dog.
A lot of good things happened to that band.
It's a shame it ended too early.
We were signed to Atlantic Records and we got to go on multiple tours with, like, Dance Hall Crashers, No Doubt, The Lunachicks, The Muffs.
A lot of stress falls on you for that, and you're hearing a lot of different things from a lot of different people.
You know, when you're 23 years old, it's kind of hard to deal with, and, eventually, we just imploded.
After Water Dog broke up, I started a band called The Frustrators with Mike Dirnt from Green Day.
The Frustrators did really well.
We headlined the Fillmore and sold out most of the shows we played.
So when I moved back to Rhode Island, it wasn't just to open a bar.
It was also to start playing music again, and being in my 50s right now, I'd be happy to keep this band going for as long as we can.
Every show's a gift.
We're at that age in our music life where the next show isn't guaranteed, where the next year isn't guaranteed.
It's smell the roses time.

I never really, like, learned to play, but I never put the guitar down because somebody was better than me or 'cause they said, like, "Oh, dude, you suck."
I remember, like, one time, me and my friend Billy, we recorded like a three-track demo, and I gave it to my friends and they were like, "You can have this back."
(exciting rock music) My name's Izzy.
I'm the singer and guitar player of Typhoid Mary.
Typhoid Mary is responsible for bringing typhoid fever to America, and our sound is fast, loud, out of tune at times, fun, unexpected.
The songs are short, and I don't know if I said it already, but catchy.
♪ Going through my head, going through my head ♪ ♪ I got a lot going through my head ♪ - Dee Dee Ramon, Johnny Ramon, and Tommy Ramon and Joey Ramon.
I can't remember if I already said 'em, but they're all dead, unfortunately.
With the Ramones, I could just easily just grab my guitar, learn that song in a few minutes, and it also inspired me to write my own music, 'cause I realized it doesn't have to be that deep to write good music.
Well, my mom gave me a guitar.
It was a crappy Yamaha, and that thing was collecting dust for a little bit.
Once I got into the Ramones, I just picked that thing back up, learned some power chords, and started writing my own music.
(rock music drowns out singer) The first real band I had was senior year of high school.
We called it a band, you know?
We never played shows, but the joy that we had back then, I think, going back on it, it was just like, wow.
Like, you know, those were so much fun.
We didn't know how to play our instruments.
We felt like we were a band and we bonded.
(exciting rock music) Be authentic.
Write your own music.
When something's fake, people are gonna know, and I actually had a conversation with my mom about this.
When you open up an old photo album, every single photo in that album is 100% authentic.
You know, when you look at a picture of your grandparents or your old cousins and everything, you see that moment.
It's like that's exactly what they were feeling because they weren't trying to post it on social media for likes, and they weren't trying to look a certain way for the camera.
Just be yourself and people will like that more, because they feel like, you know, you're a real person.
You have real stories to tell.
(exciting rock music) (band vocalizing) A lot of people believe in their 20s that you're too old to rock and roll.
You're too old to play with your friends with music.
It's always good to have goals and aspirations, but for that, it was really like, let's just, and still I have this philosophy, have fun with it.
If you're having fun with it, keep it going.
If something's wrong, fix it, and with that, it was just really, let's have fun with it, until my mom was just like, "Hey, you know, get out of the basement," and that day did come.
That's why it's important for me to like the Ramones is 'cause it got me the music, it got me the band, it got me my friend, it got me my guitar, it got me these moments in time that you can't really, you know, really recreate or even expect.
