Beato Ortiz Hernández says tortillas are in his blood. As a kid in the Mexican state of Guerrero, he said they were never missing from a meal. When he immigrated to Richmond he longed for a fresh, nixtamal tortilla – so he decided to make his own.

[BEATO HERNÁNDEZ speaking Spanish] KEYRIS MANZANARES: Beato Hernández is a local restaurateur and the man behind this factory, Virginia's first large scale tortilla manufacturer, which produces over 80,000 tortillas a week.
It's a labor of love, as the tortillas are made using the ancient process of nixtamalization, which involves cooking the corn in pickling lime or “cal” a nod to Hernández's indigenous roots [BEATO HERNÁNDEZ speaking Spanish] KEYRIS MANZANARES: Hernández says this isn't just about making tortillas.
It's about celebrating his identity and providing customers with a taste of home.
