Governor Andy Beshear has signed House Bill one, the bill that cuts the state personal income tax rate by another half percent to 4% next January.

He says he's been concerned about the impact it would have on the budget, but says Kentuckians do need relief from inflation.

The governor says he would have preferred a cut in the sales tax, but he says the Kentucky General Assembly didn't give him that option.

I have one bill in front of me, one bill about whether or not we can help our people at this time of high inflation.

So today I'm going to sign House Bill one that's going to lower the income tax on Kentuckians.

And I hope as we get through this period where, again, groceries cost too much, that this helps everybody out there at least a little bit.

The Republican Party of Kentucky isn't impressed by the governor's move.

In a statement, the party says, quote, This is just the latest example of Andy Beshear taking credit for Republican policies after having previously vetoed them.

Last year, Andy Beshear vetoed the process, which makes today's Republican tax cut possible.

What's different between last year and this one?

There is an election this November.
