Where to Watch Contact
Contact is available to stream on pbs.org and the PBS app.
- Imagine a dance class where professional dancers, beginners, students, and seasoned performers all share the same space.
That's the vision behind Dance Class for Humans, and Meagan Bertelsen is here to tell us how this innovative program is making contemporary dance even more accessible than ever.
Thank you so much for being here.
- Thank you, Liz.
- And there's so many classes, so many options for people.
Why is it important to make sure that kind of the pomp and circumstance is put to the side and that everybody is placed on a level playing field?
- Yes, Dance Class for Humans is for everybody, and everyone is bringing so much knowledge to this space, whether you've had years of a specific kind of training, or if you just love to move and you are embodied in your daily life.
And so by bringing together so many different perspectives, I think that that is actually the true teacher, and this community is what is carrying forward our collective learning and collective knowledge as we enjoy dance to the fullest.
- Yeah, and you were telling me that it's for all ages.
There are people from an array of different ages and backgrounds who participate.
- Yes, in my dance career, this is the first really truly multi-generational space that I've seen.
And it is so wonderful to see the vibrancy and clarity that some of these older bodies bring to the space that it's unlike anything else, yeah.
- I love that, a sense of community and doing it at an affordable price for people, and making sure people are able to get in and do this, right?
- Absolutely, we're also the only sliding scale class model in the city, and that makes a huge difference for especially freelancers, but anybody who wants to try to take class for the first time, just to make it as accessible as possible.
- Oh, I love that, thank you so much for stopping by and sharing this information.
