Ortiz-Torres uses destruction as a form of creation in his decades-long body of work.

Ruben Ortiz-Torres discusses how he transforms symbols of oppression into subversive art. From glitter-encrusted Tijuana police cars ("Chota, Cholos, and Narcos") to a black monochromatic star-spangled banner made of the ashes of a burnt American flag ("Black Star Spangled Banner"), Ortiz-Torres often uses destruction as a form of creation in his decades-long body of work.
