How to Catch a Poacher

“Terminating” the Indiana poaching issue with some clever tech.
Whitetail deer aren't an uncommon sight in Indiana. On the contrary, deer can be found all across the state, north to south. Even Indianapolis is known for having deer herds living in and around the city, notably in Crown Hill Cemetery. But with an ample number of deer comes ample numbers of “opportunistic” hunters. The hunted and the hunter.
Don't worry.
Bambi's fine, really.
And there's a questio as to just who was being hunted.
Because our hunter is no hunter.
At least not in the legal sense.
He's a poacher.
And our deer is no deer.
He's a decoy.
And believe it or not, our first decoy deer were actually just plywood cutouts with a deer hide slung over them.
And it all began as a grand scheme concocted by the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) to catch illegal hunters.
And then, some of our guys, a little more ingenious, started getting into the robotics.
And then we evolved from that to the full, head turning, tail flipping deer.
The result is “Artie” the artificial deer.
Robo deer, if you will.
DNR sets them up so poachers can shoot them back down.
Arties got a few bullet holes to show for it.
And the poachers, they get arrested.
I think it's a bunch of bull@$&!
Across Indiana, went undercover with officer Dean Chadley and Kenton Turner.
Normally, DNR officer hide out to see if they can bag some poachers.
But today Across Indiana, just wanted to see how common people would react to simulated wildlife.
You know, because really a lot time that that's all it takes to convince somebody that it's a real deer.
Just a little, little flip of that tail, you know?
Sure enough, Artie didn't attract any poachers, but he did catch a few looks, although some people didn't seem to notice him at all.
So we decided to place Artie in a more conspicuous location, like right next to the road.
We have had people get other vehicles and tr to scare it, and they get closer so they really can't figure out quite what it is.
It gets kind of funny sometimes.
Dean and Kenton freely admit the decoy can be kind of fun.
That is up until the point somebody starts shooting.
County Special Officer, put the gun down.
But we wanted to draw people's attention, not their gunfire.
Which is why we arrange to put Artie in the Indianapolis Zoo right next to the reindeer in the petting zoo.
Can I pet it?
Hey, make your tail go up, Mister.
Let the record show the kids just love decoy deer.
There aren't really any hard and fast rules about who poaches.
It's a it's a problem for all ages actually.
Next, we took Artie over to the mall.
Attention, shoppers.
Pay no attention to the deer.
Pay no attention to the deer.
According to Dean, it's not so far fetched to imagine somebody taking a shot at Artie in the middle of a shopping mall.
He warned me early on in the operation that deer poaching is a widespread problem.
Poaching is a problem anywhere you have deer, you've got deer, you've got poaching.
If you think you don't, then you're wrong.
If you got deer, if you got deer downtown, somebody's going to take it.
You know, they're going to take it.
Downtown?
Anywhere.
Surprisingly, we didn' get too many reactions downtown.
Although we were able to attract some people brandishing firearms.
Indianapolis finest.
But I've been out here all day long and didn't see no deer at all of a sudden I'm going to go home and see that thing looking at me, and, just don't make it.
Do you, deer hunt?
Yeah, quite a bit.
Well, that's what I told hi I said, we're going to shoot it and have venison for dinner tonight.
Do yo think you will ever created deer that will actually run and prance across the woods?
Run and prance?
Maybe not, but, we're working on some things to make it move a little maybe.
Like what?
I can't tell you.
A secret?
Yeah.
They're going to give away all of our secrets yet.
