(lively music) - The Hozho Path Renewal Foundation aims to address the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women.
Meri Bennett joins us now to share how the organization protects indigenous women and girls by transforming awareness into action.
Welcome, Meri.
- Thank you, Liz.
- So tell me how this all began.
- So last Thanksgiving I personally don't celebrate Thanksgiving just for cultural reasons, but I went for a run and I went for a run with a red hand print on my face because I know of the epidemic that's happening throughout the nation and through Canada.
There are over 5,700 Native American indigenous people that are missing from the reservation, from tribal land.
So I went for a run to bring awareness.
I went down Main Street in Kaysville so that I could bring awareness to that.
- And from the run to the foundation, now with five pillars that you're working to address this issue, can you tell us a bit more about the foundation?
- Yeah, so the foundation, the five pillars are reclaiming heritage, so we have our podcast, community involvement and the events and awareness.
We also have personal growth and healing and we are working towards future, our future generations.
And then eventually bringing in, especially what we just talked about, creating a safer environment for our community.
- And going back to the run a little bit, you also want people to run in kind of memory or in honor of someone?
- Correct, yes.
So on our run signup, we are able to... We have the list of names of people who have gone missing and we want them to select and put it on their bib, put their name there, and we will be contacting their family to let them know that they haven't been forgotten.
- How can people get involved?
- So you can join the run, you can listen to the podcast, you can volunteer, you can show up and sponsor or donate for the run or donate to help the podcast grow.
But any kind of awareness, any kind of sharing, any kind of involvement would be great.
- Well, you're doing incredible work.
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing this information.
