Brad: Hello!
And welcome to the show.
Today we're meeting someone else who came in first place: Jesse Owens.
Yadina: Jesse was born in the United States and became one of the greatest runners ever.
Brad: But it wasn't easy.
Jesse was often treated unfairly because he was black.
So he had to work extra hard, and focus on doing his best.
Xavier: And the best thing we can do right now is start the show!
Brad: Good idea!
(giggles) Let me try that again.
(zap) (crash) Xavier: Ahh, nothing like a grand opening!
Brad: I don't play too many sports, but bowling, I'm actually kinda good at!
Rufus: Step aside when you see me rollin', here comes Rufus, I'm the best at bowling!
Xavier: Who is that?
Yadina: Apparently he's Rufus.
And he has his own bowling shoes!
Brad: His own bowling shoes?
Awesome!
Yadina: You're up, Brad.
Show us what you got!
Brad: Okay!
(squeaking) (squeaking) Rufus: Rad Rufus coming at ya!
Aww yeah, easy-peasy!
Brad: That was, that was just a... a practice throw, you know!
Warming up my arm.
(nervous laughter) (deep inhale and exhale) Rufus: Rufus is the best!
Ahhh Yeah!!
Ruu-Fus, Ruu-Fus, Ruu-fus!
Brad: Ooops!
Rufus: Wooo Hoooo, still counts as a win for me!
Brad: (sighs sadly) Xavier: It's alright if you don't know how to bowl yet.
Brad: But I DO know and I was excited to show you, but...
This is not going the way I wanted at all!
Grrr!
Maybe I just shouldn't bowl.
Yadina: Xavier, we have to help Brad.
Brad: (sad sigh) Xavier/Yadina: (gasp) To the Secret Museum!
Brad: Guys wait!
What about the shoes?
Guess I'll go return them.
♪ Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?
Yadina: And where we'll go?
Brad: And when?
(coockoo clock sounding) Brad: (chimes) Yadina: Look out below!
Xavier: Wooo-hoo!
Xavier/Yadina: Hi, Berby!
Berby: (bleep blarp) Brad: Hi, Berby!
Berby: (bleearp) Brad: Upf!
Xavier: (humming excitedly) Berby: Whoooo!
Xavier: We're getting something!
Brad: Running shoes?
Yadina: (gasps) Or maybe they're magic bowling shoes.

Berby: Whoohoo!
Xavier: That's who we're going to meet, Jesse Owens.
Yadina: In Alabama, in the United States.. Brad: In the year 1921.
That's... (gasps) a 100 years ago!
Oh, I hope Jesse Owens can help me get my bowling game back.
Or at least keep the ball in my own lane.
Xavier: Only one way to find out... Ready for adventure?
Yadina: Ready!
Brad: Well, travelling through time can't be any worse than that bowling game... (deep breath) Ready!
Berby: (bleep blarp bloop) Yadina: Here we go!
Berby: (blarp bloop) Xavier: It's happening!
Yadina: Hang on Dr. Zoom!
Xavier: Wooohoo!
Brad: Whoaaa!
Berby: Whoohooo!
(zap) Xavier: So, this is Alabama in 1921!
Brad: Oof!
Nope!
My time traveling is still worse than my bowling.
Yadina: I smell strawberries!
Brad: What... was... ...that?
Yadina: A strawberry tornado?
Xavier: Hey, it's Jesse Owens!
Berby: Mhmm.
Jesse: Have you guys seen my sister?
We're racing to see who can get our strawberries home first.
Xavier: Oh!
Ah, sorry, we haven't seen her.
Jesse: She beats me every time.
But not today.
Because I'm going to focus on doing my best.
As soon as I can find her, that is.
Yadina: Is that her?
Jesse: (gasps) Yadina: I'll take that as a 'yes'.
(splash) Jesse: Ugh-ahh!
Jesse's Sister: You may be faster, but I'm still going to win!
Brad: (gasps) Yadina: Watch out!
Jesse: Ugh!
Aaaah!
Jesse's Sister: I won!
Yadina: Wow, Jesse, you're really fast.
Even if you did run into that hay bale.
Brad: Ya!
What happened?
Jesse: I got distracted.
If I want to be any good at running, I know I have to stop worrying about what other people are doing or saying, and just focus on doing my best.
But, it's not always easy.
Brad: Yeah.
Especially when other people chant their own name really loud and have super fancy bowling shoes!
Jesse: Um...sure!
Yadina: Here are your strawberries, Jesse.
(giggles) Minus a few.
Jesse: Thanks for the help.
Maybe I'll see you guys at the next race!
Brad: I wonder if Jesse will ever get better at racing other people?
Berby: (bleep blarp) Xavier: Looks like we're about to find out... (zap) Brad: Whoa.
Where are we?
When are we?
Berby: (bleep blarp) Xavier: Berby says we're on a school track field, 12 years later.
Hey, there's Jesse!
Yadina: Look, his shoes are just like the ones we saw in the Secret Museum!
Brad: Woah.
He is good!
Runner #1: But Jesse's not as good as us!
Yadina: Hey, that's not very nice!
What about team spirit?
Runner #1: Hmpf!
Brad: Why would they say that about Jesse?
Xavier: I don't know.
Jesse: (breathing hard) Runner #1: Alright, go!!
Hmpf!
Jesse: (breathing hard) Spectators: (cheering) Xavier: Are you okay, Jesse?
Jesse: (sighs) I lost.
Yadina: At least you didn't run into any hay bales this time... Jesse: This is way worse.
I'm on the school track team now, but... most of my teammates don't want me here.
Brad: But why?
You're a really good runner.
Jesse: It's because my skin is a different color than theirs.
They see that and just assume I'm not as good as they are.
Yadina: That's so... so... ridiculous!
Everyone should be accepted!
Jesse: I know.
I love being Black.
The way they treat me makes me feel sad and even angry sometimes.
But, not today.
I'm going to stop thinking about them, and focus on doing my best.
For me.
Brad: Focus on doing your best.
(whistle sounding) Jesse: Well, here goes the next heat... Yadina: We'll be cheering for you!
Jesse: Thanks!
Team Runners: Gooo team!
Group: Hmpf!
Runner #1: Going again Jesse?
Why, you're not as good as-- Jesse: You?
We'll see about that.
Now excuse me, I have a race to run!
(calming breath) Focus on doing your best.
(starting gun shot) Yadina: Woohoo!
Xavier/Brad: Yeah, go Jesse!
♪ (suspenseful music) ♪ Brad: Look at him go!
He's doing it!
He's doing it!
Crowd: (roaring) Yadina: Whoa.
Where are we now?
Xavier: We're in Germany, three years later... Where Jesse is competing at the Olympics against some of the best runners in the world.
Brad/Yadina/Xavier: (gasp) Jesse: Focus on doing your best!
Xavier: And he's winning!
Yadina: Go, Jesse!
Brad/Xavier: Wooohooo!
Yadina: Yeah, Jesse!
Crowd: (roars) Jesse: I did it!
Crowd: (roaring) Xavier: Ah-mazing!
Yadina: Yay, Jesse!
Brad: Yes!
He didn't listen to what anyone else was doing or saying.
He focused on doing his best.
He even won an Olympic gold medal!
Crowd: (roaring) Brad: If Jesse can do that, then I can focus on doing my best at the bowling alley.
Xavier: Totally!
Berby, lets go home!
Berby: (bleep blarp bloop) (zap) Brad: Ok, I can do this.
(squeaking) Rufus: Yaaaaaaaa me!
Brad: (calming breath) Jesse's voice: Focus on doing your best!
Come on, come on!
(nervous gasp) Yadina/Xavier/Brad: (loud cheer) Brad: I did it!
Xavier: Nice one Brad!
Brad: I've never gotten that many pins down before.
Rufus: Hey, good job.
Brad: Thanks Rufus.
(zap) (ball crashing into pins) Brad: Striiiike!
Meeting Jesse Owens was incredible!
Yadina: At the 1936 Olympics, he won a total of four gold medals.
Xavier: It was a really big deal.
Brad: Jesse proved that being great doesn't depend on what you look like or where you come from.
Xavier: Thanks for joining our awesome adventure to meet Jesse Owens.
Brad: Who used to be a kid, just like you and me.
Yadina: So kids like you can change the world!
I am Yadina.
Xavier: I am Xavier.
Brad: I am Brad.
And I will always focus on doing my best.

♪ (scat singing) ♪ Xavier: Hi there, welcome to the show!
Yadina: Today we're meeting an amazing singer, Ella Fitzgerald.
Brad: There was no one like Ella.
Listening to her just makes you feel good!
Xavier: And she was one of the best at a style of singing called 'scatting'.
Yadina: That's when you make musical sounds with your voice.
♪ (scat singing) ♪ Xavier: ♪ Yaba-daba-daba.
♪ Yadina: ♪ Yeba-daba-bob-doop ♪ Xavier: ♪ Ba-da-ba-daaa!
♪ Yadina: ♪ Ba-daaaa ♪ Brad: ♪ Du-da-du-badoo!
♪ (zap) Brad: It's okay, you can do this.
Easy, Brad, easy!
Close your eyes and take a deep breath.
(deep breath) ♪ (humming) ♪ ♪ (soft ballet music playing) ♪ Yep!
♪ (soft ballet music playing) ♪ (hard record scratch) Xavier: Uh, what are you doing?
Brad: Um... nothing!
Nohing at all!
(nervous laugh) What?
I'm just-- scratching my back!
No, not there, not there-- Oooh yaaa, that's the spot.
Xavier: Annyywaaaay, wanna practice for tonight's dance party with us?
Yadina: We've practiced lots.
Hit it, Xavier!
♪ (upbeat dance music) ♪ Brad: But, I can't dance like that.
Xavier: That's okay.
Just dance like um-- Yadina: Brad.
Brad: Not a good idea.
Maybe I just shouldn't go.
Dr Zoom: (squeak) Yadina: But you love to dance Brad.
Xavier: Yeah!
Yadina's right.
You just need a little help!
And that means... Yadina/Xavier: To the Secret Museum!
Brad: Nevermind, I take it back.
Look, I'm dancing I'm dancing!
Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?
Yadina: And where we'll go?
Brad: And wheeeen...?
Yadina: Look out below!
Xavier: Wooohoo!
Yadina/Xavier: Hi, Berby!
Berby: (bleeearp) Brad: Hi, Berby!
Berby: (bloop blarp) Brad: Upf!
Xavier: (excited humming) Berby: Whooo!
Xavier: We're getting something!
Brad: What is it?
Yadina: Kind of looks like a burnt pizza.
Berby: (blurp) Brad: I like burnt pizza.
'Burnt' is my 7th favorite flavor.
Xavier: Whatever it is, it belonged to her, Ella Fitzgerald.
That's who we're going to meet!
Yadina: In New York City, in 1934.
Brad: 1934?
That's almost 100 years ago!
Yadina: I hope she can help Brad figure out how to dance like-- Well...Brad.
Brad: I hope she can help me dance like someone else.
Anyone else.
Xavier: Only one way to find out... Ready for adventure?
Yadina: Ready!
Brad: Wait no, no, no!
Not Ready.
Berby: (bleep blarp) Brad: (concentrated groan) Ready!
Xavier: Uhhhhh...you okay?
Brad: (giggles) So-So ready.
Berby: (bleep blarp blurp) Yadina: Here we go!
Berby: (bleep blarp) Xavier: It's happening!
Yadina: Hang on Dr Zoom!
Xavier: Wooohoo!
Brad: Woaaah!
Berby: Whoohooo!
(zap) Xavier: Whoa.
New York City in 1934 is... Yadina: Sparkly.
Xavier: Hey, check out those dancers!
Yadina: Oh, maybe one of them is Ella.
Berby: (blurp) Uh uh.
Brad: Nope.
Well I guess that's the end of that.
Time to go home!
Stage Announcer: Ella Fitzgerald!
You're on in three minutes!
Ella: Three minutes?
(nervous groan) Berby: (bleep blarp bloop) (whirring) Xavier: There she is.
Ella Fitzgerald.
Brad: Hi um, Ella?
I-I'm Brad?
You look nervous, are you okay?
Ella: I am really nervous.
This is amateur night at the Apollo Theatre.
I was going to dance, but look at those two.
I can't compete with them!
I've decided to sing instead.
But now i'm not so sure.
Brad: Someone once told me to take a deep breath when I'm nervous.
It helps you feel better.
Ella: That's good advice.
My mom always told me to "Be yourself".
Maybe I'll try both those things.
Stage Announcer: Ella Fitzgerald, you're up!
Ella: Okay, here goes... everything.
(audience member coughing) (popcorn crunching) ♪ (soft dramatic music building) ♪ (microphone feedback) Audience: (groaning) Ella: (deep breath) A one, two.. ♪ A tisket a tasket ♪ ♪ A green and yellow basket ♪ ♪ I bought a basket for my mommy ♪ ♪ On the way I dropped it ♪ Xavier: Whoah, Ella was going to dance?!
Yadina: Yeah, she's a really good singer!
Brad: Maybe the Secret Museum is telling me... to be a singer?
(clears his throat) ♪ (screech) ♪ Nope!
Ella: ♪ --to the market, ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ A tisket a tasket ♪ ♪ A green and yellow basket, ♪ Brad: What?
I was just tying my shoe.
♪ Yadina: It's already tied.
(giggles) Ella: ♪ ...dropped iiiiiiiit!
♪ (enthusiastic applause) Xavier: Ella, you were amazing out there!
Yadina: Ya, you didn't look nervous at all!
Ella: I love to sing and decided to just be myself.
Was it okay?
Xavier: Okay?
Brad: It was incredible!
Yadina: Dr. Zoom and I think you should be yourself all the time!
Ella: (hums happily) Brad: I do love a happy ending.
But... How does this help me go to the dance party?
I still can't dance!
Berby: (blarp blooop) Brad: If you think it'll help?
Berby: Whoohoo!
(zap) Yadina: Where are we?
Brad: When are we?
Berby: (bloop bloop) Xavier: Berby says we're at a recording studio 4 years later.
Yadina: Heyyy, look at all the burnt pizzas.
Xavier: Oh yeah, they're records.
Berby: Mhmm!
Xavier: Ah-mazing fact, waaaay back before computers or cell phones, people used records to listen to music.
Ella: ♪ ...and yellow basket, ♪ Xavier: Music like that!
Yadina: Hey, that sounds like Ella!
Ella: ♪ ...on the way I dropped it ♪ ♪ Pa-pa dua-du-du du-dua ♪ ♪ pi-pi dua-di-du du-duout ♪ ♪ ba-ba-ba pa-du-dua ♪ Brad: Wow, she's even better than before.
♪ Dubi-dub-da-da ♪ ♪ Dubi-dub-da-da ♪ ♪ Dua-dua-dooooo - hey-ba!
♪ Yadina: Ella, you sounded just like the instruments!
How did you do that?
Ella: Oh, well, I don't really know.
I just love the sound of musical instruments, and I get a kick out of trying to sound like them.
I guess I was just... being myself.
Brad: It was incredible!
Can you do it again?
Ella: Of course.
Once more from the top!
♪ (jazz music) ♪ Ella: ♪ (singing) ♪ Xavier: Soooo good!
Yadina: She's even impressed Dr. Zoom.
Ella: ♪ --a yellow basket, ♪ ♪ I bought a basket for my mommy, ♪ ♪ on the way I dropped it ♪ ♪ A tisket a tasket ♪ ♪ duli-da-da-du-ta du-and dua ♪ ♪ Da-da-da-da-da ♪ Xavier: Looks like Brad's impressed, too.

Ella: ♪ du-a-du-a-dooooo ♪ Brad: ♪ Da-ba-da-ba- baaaa ♪ (ahem) (chuckles) I was just scratching my back, then tying my shoelace and- Yadina: We all saw you, Brad.
Xavier: You were definitely dancing.
Ella: In a way I've never seen before.
And I loved it!
Brad: You... You did?
I think I get what dancing like Brad is now!
It's doing what my heart feels and my brain makes up in the moment.
It's being myself!
Ella: You should always be yourself.
Because there's no one in the world quite like you.
Brad: Thanks, Ella Fitzgerald.
Guys, I think I'm ready for that dance party now.
Xavier: Let's go!
Yadina: Yes!
Xavier: Bye, Ella!

Xavier: Berby, let's go home.

Dance party, here I come... Yadina: You have to open the door.
Brad: It's just-- you haven't seen the full Brad dance yet.
Maybe I could show you before we go in?
Sort of like a warm up?
Yadina: Yeah!
Xavier: Give us the full Brad.
Brad: (deep breath) I present to you the butterfly's journey!
♪ (upbeat dance music) ♪ Yadina: Ohhhh I get it, he's a caterpillar!
♪ (dance music) ♪ Xavier: Now he's in a cocoon... ♪ Yadina: And now he's a butterfly!
♪ Yadina/Xavier: Whooooaaaaa.
Brad: So, what do you think?
Too much butterfly, not enough?
How's the cocoon?
Yadina: We love it!
Xavier: Yup.

(blowing kiss) Brad: Then what are we waiting for?
