Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipthe Princeton Community is shaken tonight after their neighbors were targeted by a sudden immigrations and Customs Enforcement operation sources say men in unmarked Vehicles wearing police gear began knocking on doors approaching people in the neighborhood and interrogating them early Wednesday morning the mayor says the city was given no warning that ice would be present and as senior correspondent Joanna gagas reports his office is now awaiting word on what prompted the interrogations as community members press Ice for answers they were driving around Princeton they were out of their cars some of the agents asking for identification to workers and to um just random people on the streets ice agents conducted an operation in Princeton early Wednesday morning leaving the community that has a large immigrant population shaken from what they experienced we saw that he he stopped right in front of us on the other side of the Street and took a picture of us anhela Ramos Works in Princeton and watched ice agents stop day workers standing on various Corners before taking a picture of her and her friend and then beeping at them this was so terrifying and it's also we took it as such a disrespect um he was like honking to tell us that you know he is the authority that he'll be back community members and Princeton's mayor Mark Freda take issue with how the operation was conducted and their failure to communicate with local or state government that they were coming they have officers where invest at allate police they are ice they should have identification large letters that clearly identifies who they are they're not all dressed the same they don't all have the same vest they're in different types of unmarked Vehicles all of it he says leads to potentially dangerous interactions with ice agents you're in the middle of your own community and all a sudden an unmarked vehicle pulls up and some guy jumps out with a bulletproof vest and a gun you you know how you're going to react to that or how our police are going to react if we don't know that those are ice officers it's the potential for a problem is is pretty real ice issued a statement saying they had targeted three non-citizens for arrest and that one was taken into custody by ER officers ice officers had their own complaints saying the other arrest was blocked by public interference with officers in pursuit of the individual warning that obstruction or otherwise interfering with an ice arrest is a crime and places all parties in Jeopardy but community members say they have different accounts now of how many people were actually detained we believe and we are um investigating and knowing that there was more than one arrest on Wednesday morning we're hearing reports that anywhere from 8 to 10 individuals were apprehended by Ice we are also hearing reports from Ice themselves um from I them which says that only one individual was arrested so it's from 1 to 10 we're getting U multiple information too some people said six people were arrested we don't know if they were just detained for a moment and let go we don't know anything um uh that that has been verified ice has a responsibility to verify that congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman who represents Princeton says a lot of answers are in order we need to understand their protocol we need to understand what responsibility they had to let somebody know that they're coming to town and we have to have an understanding that you just don't ask people in the United States of America to show you their um identification I don't carry my identification on me all the time that's that's not American the American friends service committee offers free legal advice to immigrants and says the operation will have a long lasting impact on this community it has a debilitating effect on the community people are now afraid to go out to go to work they're afraid to walk in the street to take their children to Camp to school fearful that you know at any given time they can be arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement the mayor is now working to determine how much his officers will oversee ice if and when they come back to town I'm Joanna gagas NJ Spotlight news [Music]
