Groups are holding events and out canvasing to teach immigrants about the protections they're afforded under the U.S. Constitution, whether they're here legally or not.
And what to do if or when they're approached by federal immigration agents.
Raven Santana reports.
Some of the members of Make the Road, New Jersey have been working around the clock to fold hundreds of these pamphlets.
It's part of a new, massive community outreach called Know Your Rights.
For communities that are at highest Risk to Encounter.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as Ice at Home, on the streets, or at their workplace.
Everyone needs to know their rights.
We have a lot of members who are in mixed status families, or one parent may be undocumented, the other not.
Maybe their kids are our citizens and their parents are not.
The new initiative comes after President Trump implemented a mass deportation plan since taking office, putting millions of new Jersey families at risk.
Diego Barta, Soggy, is the communication manager for Make Their Own New Jersey this week.
They're in Perth Amboy, where they are canvasing areas where the most vulnerable live, eat, shop and work.
A lot of folks call it like Cinco Skinner's or the Five Corners.
This is a really heavily, immigrant population.
This is the heart of downtown Perth Amboy.
So there's a lot of businesses who are, from immigrant descent, that a lot of immigrants go out and buy from.
People are scared.
People are scared to go out.
People are scared to, like, go shopping, go eating, go to the parks, you know, go take walks.
People are really, really afraid.
Member Milena Samin knows that fear firsthand.
She immigrated from Ecuador in 2016 and lived in the US undocumented for four years before finally becoming a citizen.
She witnessed her own family member being detained by Ice during that time and knows the fear that people are feeling, which is why, she says, educating folks is so important in order to do that, you need to connect with people and surpass this barrier.
This is so important because our organization, as someone who really does encourage to, for them to know their rights well, this is just one of three groups, and they're spreading out to three different areas here in Perth Amboy, hoping to spread awareness.
And these fliers that they say will educate people on what to do if they're approached by Ice.
We are in, in a part of the city that is supposed to be, you know, packed with people and like, people are out buying, like eating in the restaurants, as you can see here.
I don't even know if you noticed, but the restroom that we went into, the first one, it was empty.
There's usually around this time because they came home from work, lots of people eating at the restaurant and like, you know, hanging out there.
But right now, it was just the cookers that were in the restaurant, so not very much people.
Do you think that's because people are afraid?
Yes.
So what are your rights if confronted by the soggy says after remaining calm, remember the following vital information.
So if they encounter ice in their homes or in the streets, they have the right to remain silent.
So everybody has the right, regardless of their legal status.
And also they have the right not to provide any information to the Ice agents.
So, if an Ice agents stop you and ask you for your name, for your aid or to identify yourself, you can say, like, I have the right to remain silent and ask if they are free to go, if they have if the agent said that they have an order against them is, they have the right to request that order for the ice to show them, and they have to make sure that order it has, their names have their date of birth.
And also a sign is stamped by a judge.
Border side use guidance is echoed by Perth Amboy immigration attorney Alan Pollock, who says his phone has been ringing off the hook.
Pollock stresses preparation is also key, especially for those who are at highest risk of being detained.
You know, whether that's, you know, saving up money for a bond or, you know, setting up documents to maybe temporarily give custody to somebody else in case they do get detained, or giving power of attorney to somebody to handle some of their assets and property if they're detained.
Next Tuesday, they plan on holding an event in Passaic and in Elizabeth.
They also hold meetings every Thursday at their office in Perth Amboy.
For anyone who may want more information or guidance on what to do if they or someone they love has been approached or detained by Ice.
