[Music] typically what happens is when adults like me make decisions for and about students without getting their their input it's not always the decision that will move or motivate our students and time and time we say why isn't this working we thought this was a great idea but it was our idea and not their ideas it's just a whole different generation of students they think differently and so they move differently than we do so that's why their input is so important in our district they call them Scholars but anybody can be a scholar but to the outside world they may think a scholar is a student who gets perfect grades and does everything right so to the outside world we say student voice inside we say scholar voice so we have 10 high schools in acon public schools and there's one student from each high school and the students basically they are non-traditional leaders we're looking for the student who has not been tapped to lead but has that leadership ability um and these students can come from all genres they can be the A+ student but they can also be the middle ofthe line student and they can also be that student who needs a lot of encouragement their school principal or their school counselor recommends them after they're recommended they go through an interview process and then from there they're selected to serve um and so we have because the program has grown so much we have a scholar B board or a student board but we also have we have a new superintendent his name is Dr Robinson he started with us in August and one of the things that he wanted to do was have his own advisory team of students so there are also two students from each High School who will serve on his advisory team and this is a brand new process um the mayor there's also a mayor youth Leadership Council in akan and so we have about 50 students who will serve on that and then there's also another Council coming up called The Summit County Youth Council and that's the the region we live in the county that we live in and we'll have about 50 students who will serve on that Council as well too visit us online at ideast stream.org welcome for more web extras links to resources and to watch the documentary you are welcome creating safe and supportive schools a production of idea stream public media
