LET ME GO BACK A LITTLE BIT EVEN FURTHER.
I'M REALLY NOT AN ARTIST.
I'M JUST KIDDING.
[ LAUGHTER ] I STARTED OUT AS A DANCE TEACHER, K THROUGH FIVE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND I HAD SO MANY WONDERFUL ART TEACHERS IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND IT WAS AT FAIR ARTS IMPACT WHEN I FIRST CAUGHT THE FIRE FOR VISUAL ARTS AND IT WAS BECAUSE OF SO MANY BEAUTIFUL ELEMENTARY ART TEACHERS THAT ALLOWED ME TO LOOK AT THE PROCESS, ALLOWED ME TO COME IN AND PLAY WITH THE OTHER KIDS, AND I USE THAT WORD A LOT BECAUSE THAT'S JOY.
SOMETIMES WHEN I GO PAST THE PLAYGROUND I HEAR THE SOUND OF PURE JOY, JUST SKIPPING, RUNNING, JUMPING.
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT FEELING OF LOVE AND JOY, DOING NOTHING, BUT PLAYING.
THAT'S WHAT I DO.
I PLAY.
I STARTED WITH JUST PAINTING CHAIRS.
JUST PAINTING ANYTHING ON WOOD THAT I COULD FIND.
I STARTED MAKING THE STROKES OF THE PAINT WITH JUST ACRYLIC PAINT.
THAT WAS IT.
I WAS GONE.
I WAS HOOKED.
IT'S SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAY THAT PAINT WENT ACROSS THERE AND THAT -- PEACE AND THE SILENCE OF JUST THAT MOVEMENT PULLED ME IN.
SO OF COURSE, NOW, I'M PAINTING EVERYTHING IN TOWN.
ALL OVER MY HOUSE, I'M PAINTING THIS, PAINTING THAT AND I WOULD JUST GO IN MY ROOM AND I WOULD JUST PAINT, AND I'M TELLING YOU, IT WAS HEAVEN.
MY INSPIRATION TODAY COMES FROM EVERYWHERE.
IN MY FAMILY, IN WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD, THE POSITIVE, THE NEGATIVE AND MY DUTY TO LIFT, MY COMMITMENT TO LIFT.
I HAVE MORE BEHIND ME THAN I'M GOING FORWARD WITH NOW, AND I THINK TIME INSPIRES ME.
THE LACK OF TIME, THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME AND THEN THE ABILITY TO TREAT TIME AS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR, A VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GET THAT BACK.
ONGOING IS HOME GOINGS IS AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAMILIES CELEBRATE IT'S A FUNERAL.
MINISTERS AND THE CHOIR OVER HERE.
THOSE ARE MY THREE COUSINS IN THE MIDDLE AND THEY'RE GRIEVING AND THEY'RE AT THE FUNERAL AND THEN OVER HERE MY UNCLE AND MY AUNT AND A COUPLE OTHER PEOPLE ARE GOING TO THE CEMETERY IN THOSE FOOTSTEPS GOING THAT WAY.
I WAS AT THE FUNERAL, AND I'M SITTING THERE AND I'M SAYING I CAN'T LET THESE -- THESE MOMENTS ARE SO IMPORTANT.
DO I SKETCH SOMETHING DOWN SKETCH SOMETHING DOWN.
I HAVE TO RETELL THIS.
SHE WAS 98.
I KNEW HER ALL MY LIFE.
I CAN'T LET THIS MOMENT BE GONE AND NEVER TALK ABOUT HER AGAIN, BUT I SAID IF THEY WILL REMEMBER THIS, IF I EXPLAIN THIS TO THEM, IT'S LIKE A PICTURE IN TIME.
YOU KNOW, LIKE HOW YOU WRITE.
PAINTING IS SOMEWHAT LIKE WRITING BECAUSE YOU'RE TRYING TO GET ALL THESE VALUABLE CONCEPTS IN, THE BEGINNING, THE MIDDLE AND THE END AND THAT'S THE BEGINNING, THE MIDDLE AND THE END LIKE A BOOK.
>> I WANT TO TELL STORIES OF THE CLOTILDA EACH THOUGH IT WAS AGAINST THE LAW TO ENSLAVE AFRICANS.
THE SHIPS STILL WENT OUT AND THE LAST SHIP WAS THE CLOTILDA.
I WANT THEM TO KNOW THAT AND THAT THE DESCENDANTS OF THE CLOTILDA STILL EXIST.
THERE WAS THE STORY OF MY GRANDMA.
SHE WAS AN USHER.
SHE WENT TO, LIKE, THE FOURTH OR THE FIFTH GRADE, BUT SHE DID HER BEST AND SHE WAS THE HEAD USHER AT MOUNT PLEASANT BAPTIST CHURCH IN ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT.
THAT MEANT SOMETHING, AND THAT ALL OF OUR EXISTENCE HERE MEANS SOMETHING.
IT REALLY MEANS SOMETHING.
I THINK THE MOST REWARDING THING FOR ME OR ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING THINGS IS THAT SOMEBODY REALLY GETS IT.
THEY LIKE IT.
NOW LET ME TELL YOU, WHEN I FIRST STARTED DOING THIS IT WASN'T VERY POPULAR.
PEOPLE DIDN'T REALLY, REALLY LIKE IT.
IT'S, LIKE, WHAT IS SHE DOING, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?
I'M TELLING YOU, THAT'S WHY I'M SAYING, TIME -- IF YOU CONTINUE TO WORK AND GROW WHATEVER YOU'RE GROWING AND DOING IT JUST GETS BETTER IF YOU COMMIT YOURSELF TO IT BECAUSE ALL THOSE LITTLE STRUGGLES IS YOUR STRENGTH.

I JUST WANT TO SPEAK REALLY THROUGH MY ART.
I THOUGHT IT WAS VERY POWERFUL TO BE ABLE TO TELL A STORY VISUALLY WITHOUT ANY WORDS.
MY THEMES ARE ALL ABOUT THE SUBJECTS AND IT'S ALL ABOUT TELLING THEIR STORY, AND I WANT TO TELL IT IN A VIBRANT, ENERGETIC WAY THAT PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THESE PEOPLE, SO I STUDIED ART, AND I WANTED TO MAKE IT MORE INTERESTING.
I CAME TO THE POINT WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE AND I WANTED TO DECORATE MY FIRST APARTMENT, AND I DIDN'T WANT TO HANG A FLOWER ON MY WALL.
THAT'S JUST NOT THE TYPE PERSON I WOULD HAVE, YOU WOULD NEVER FIND IT AND THE SUBJECTS I PICKED IS SOMETHING THAT I'VE BEEN INTERESTED IN ME.

YOU WOULD FIND THE LOUIE ARMSTRONG AND JIMI HENDRIX AND IT WILL THEM WHAT I FEEL ABOUT, AND I WANT TO MAKE IT MORING ABOUT INTERESTING THAT'S SOMEONE WHO 10 YEARS OLD CAN LOOK AT A PIECE I CREATE 11 LEARN SOMETHING BY BEING LOOKING AT THE PIECE.
>> THE FOUNDATION IS OIL PAINT, SPRAY PAINT AND COLLAGE.
I HAVE EVOLVEDED TO USE OTHER MEDIUMS LIKE MARKERS, ACRYLIC PAINTS.
IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE SUBJECT THAT I WANT TO CONVEY HOW TO DO IT.
THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT YOU CAN'T PAINT.
YOU HAVE TO USE PHYSICAL ITEMS THAT YOU FIND AND IT REALLY CREATES A LOT OF DEPTH FOR MY ART.
IT GIVES IT TEXTURE.
IF THE PERSON IS A LITTLE BIT MORE EDGY OR CONTEMPORARY OR RESERVED IT'S WHAT I WANT TO CONVEY ABOUT THEIR PERSONALITY AND SO, FOR EXAMPLE, I HAVE A DANNY BROWN PIECE AND HE'S WILD AND EDGY, AND SO I USED A LOT OF COLLAGE AND SPRAY PAINT TO BUILD UP THE BACKGROUND OF THAT PIECE, BUT THE FOUNDATION IS OIL PAINT FOR THE ACTUAL FIGURE.

>> ABE LINCOLN IS ONE OF MY MOST ICONIC PIECES THAT I'VE DONE.
I THOUGHT HE WAS JUST A REALLY INTERESTING GUY BECAUSE HE WAS A BOXER, AND ALL THESE CRAZY THINGS THAT NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW ABOUT HIM, SO WHEN I DID MY RESEARCH ABOUT HIM, ALL YOU COULD FIND ARE BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS, AND I WANTED TO BRING THAT TO MODERN DAY, SO YOU HAVE TO ADD COLOR OR OUT CONTEXT AND THEN WHAT I DID WITH MY FIRST RENDITION OF HIM IS HES TAKING A PICTURE OF HIMSELF IN A 35-MILLIMETER CAMERA WITH A TUXEDO ON AND IT MADE HIM THE CHARACTER BROUGHT TO LIFE.
SINCE THEN, I'VE DONE SEVERAL MURALS OF HIM WITH THESE KALEIDOSCOPE GLASSES WHICH I THINK ARE PRETTY COOL.
IT SORT OF JUST MAKES HIM LIKE AN ICON INSTEAD OF JUST STALE IN HISTORY.
I USE A LOT COLOR AND MOVEMENT TO TRY TO CAPTURE YOU AS LONG AS POSSIBLE AND MAYBE PUT DETAILS AND THESE ARE THINGS THAT YOU MAY NOT SEE UNTIL THE FIFTH TIME AND MY PIECES ARE VERY DIVERSE AND THEY CAN BE PLACED IN A HOME OR RESTAURANT.
FOR ANY PARTICULAR VENUE.
SO IT'S REALLY INTERESTING THAT YOU CAN FIND SOMETHING BY LOOKING AT THE PEACE OF MIND.
>> I HAVE A MISTY COPELAND PIECE THAT I DID.
PHENOMENAL PERSON, AND SHE'S ACCOMPLISHED SO MANY THINGS AND BROKEN SO MANY BARRIERS AND THROUGHOUT HER PIECE I INCORPORATED A LOT OF MAGAZINE COVERS AND SORT OF ICONIC PIECES OUT OF HER TIMELINE, AND I CHOSE THIS POSE THAT WAS REALLY SORT OF BEAUTIFUL.

IT'S IN THE EARLY PHASES OF PAINTING.
I DO MULTIPLE LAYERS, LIKE YOU'LL FIRST TONE IT WITH THE BROWN AND THEN I GO BACK AND ADD COLOR AND I'M ALSO WORKING ON AN NWA PIECE THAT I'M PICKING BACK UP AFTER A YEAR OF SETTING IT DOWN AND THINKING ABOUT WHAT I WANTED TO DO FOR THE BACKGROUND AND HOW I WANTED TO CAPTURE THEIR ESSENCE WITHIN THE PIECE.
IF I WANTED TO DO MORE GRAFFITI AND ADD MORE SPRAY PAINT AND COLLAGE TO THAT PIECE.
EAZY E IS RIGHT IN THE CENTER AND HE'S IN THE FOREFRONT OF THIS AND HE'S GUYS ARE BEHIND HIM SO I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT HIM, BUT ALSO NOT HAVE, LIKE, THE BACKGROUND OVERPOWER IT AND IT LENDS ITSELF TO BEING A QUIET BACKGROUND AND IT'S IN YOUR FACE.
>> THE PHRASE THEY TYPICALLY USE FOR A PORTRAIT IS SONG LYRICS FROM THAT MUSICIAN AND SOME ARE MOVIES THAT THEY WERE IN.
IF IT'S CLOSER TO HOME LIKE DANNY BROWN, THEY DID DO DETROIT STREET BACKGROUND AND A WONDERFUL STUDIO THAT WAS INSIDE AND I WOULD INCLUDE.
A LOT OF ARTIFACTS INCLUDED THAT FOR THE PEACE.

THE BOOK IS ALL ABOUT TWO SISTERS WHO WERE HALF SISTERS.
THEY WERE SEPARATED AT BIRTH.
ONE SISTER ENDED UP STAYING IN GHANA AND MARRYING A BRITISH MAN WHO CAME TO COLONIZE IN GHANA, AND THE OTHER SISTER ENDED UP BEING SOLD INTO SLAVERY.
IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO HAVE THE SHOW BE A GREAT REPRESENTATION OF THE STORY, AND SO I WANTED TO HAVE ARTISTS THAT WERE INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS FROM AFRICA.
I WANTEDED TO HAVE ARTISTS THAT WERE LOCAL ARTISTS AS WELL AS NATIONAL ARTISTS.
SO WE HAVE NATIONAL, INTERNATIONAL AND REGIONAL ARTISTS REPRESENTED IN THE !

>> RIVER SPIRIT IS AN ACCUMULATION OF DIFFERENT FABRICS THAT I'VE PAINTED AND -- AND EMBELLISHED.
I MAKE A FORM OUT OF WHAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED, LIKE, PAPER MACHE, AND I CURE THE PAPER PULP FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS.
THIS HAPPENS TO BE A REPRESENTATION OF THE STRUGGLE OF SOMEONE THAT IS FROM THE MOTHER LAND, AFRICA.
SHE LIVES OFF OF THE RIVER.
HER SPIRIT COMES FROM THE RIVER.
SHE IS THE RIVER SPIRIT.
>> HE IS A SOUTH AFRICAN ARTIST AND HE IS A PAINTER WHO DOES COLLAGE WORK WITH FABRIC.
I LOVE HIS WORK BECAUSE HE'S REPRESENTING OFTENTIMES WOMEN IN HIS CULTURE, HE REPRESENTS PEOPLE THAT ARE SOCIALITES AND HE REPRESENTS SOMEONE WHO IS A ROYAL PERSON IN SOUTH AFRICAN CULTURE SO HE DOES WORK THAT IS DEFINITELY INSPIRED BY WHAT'S HAPPENING IN CULTURE.
HE HAS A PIECE OVER HERE CALLED FAMILY.
THIS PIECE OVER HERE THAT HAS THE MAP ON THAT WAS CREATED DURING THE TIME OF COVID.
HE WANTED TO SHOW HOW FAMILY MEMBERS WERE STILL ABLE TO BE TOGETHER AND COMMUNICATE EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE, YOU KNOW, HAVING TO BE DRAPED WITH THESE FABRICS AROUND THEIR FACES.
WHEN WE THINK ABOUT HOME TYPICALLY WE THINK ABOUT THE CURTAINS IN OUR GRANDMOTHER'S LIVING ROOM OR WE MIGHT THINK ABOUT THE SOFA PRINT OR THE FLORAL PRINT THAT WAS ON THE SOFA AND WE OFTEN THINK ABOUT QUILT AND THE BEDDING AND THE THINGS THAT KEPT US WARM IN THE EVENING.
>> IT HAS A TREMENDOUS HISTORY.
THEY STARTED QUILTING DURING ENSLAVEMENT TIME DURING THE MID-1800s IS WHEN THE COLLECTIVE STARTED AND THEY DIDN'T CALL IT THAT AT THE TIME AND THAT'S WHEN THE LADIES STARTED QUILTING AND EVENTUALLY THEIR QUILT BECAME THIS INTERNATIONAL PHENOMENON.
YOU CAN SEE THE QUILT IN THE SMITHSONIAN.
THEY HAVE BEEN COLLECTED ALL OVER THE WORLD.
I DROVE TO THE BEND AND MET A WOMAN BY THE NAME OF QUEENY PETTWAY WHO WAS A VERY, VERY FAMOUS QUILTER AND THESE QUILTS REALLY SYMBOLIZE WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR HANDS AND A LITTLE BIT OF SOMETHING.
JUST A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, A LITTLE BIT OF THAT AND IT TURNS INTO THIS.
>> THIS IS TULULA BEULAH, AND TULULA BEULAH IS MY VERSION OF OF WHAT WE CALL A SCARECROW OR A GARDEN FAIRY THAT WOULD BE PLACED IN THE GARDEN OR WHAT WOULD BE FORMALLY KNOWN AS THE PLANTATION.
THESE ARE MOSTLY A COLLAGE OF CUTTING FROM ART PIECES THAT I HAVE MADE OVER THE YEARS AND DESIGNED FOR WHAT I CONSIDER WEARABLE ART.
THE DREAM POT NEXT TO HER IS THAT AS A CHILD I HAD A NEIGHBOR THAT WAS DOWN IN SOME OF THAT USED TO TELL US -- JUST TEAR OFF A PIECE OF COTTON OR TEAR OFF A PIECE OF FABRIC.
THINK ABOUT YOUR DREAM AND DROP IT IN THE POT, HONEY.
IT WILL COME TO YOU, SO THAT IS WHAT THAT'S FROM.

SO CECILY ANTOINET DID A COLLECTION CALLED TION WHERE SHE DEVELOPED SCULPTURAL PIECES INCLUDING PHOTOGRAPHY AND WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THESE PIECES IS THAT IT SHOWS THE DEPTH, THE RICHNESS AND THE VARIETY THAT WOMEN CAN USE, AND SO IN LOUISIANA THERE WAS THE TION LAW AND FOR WOMEN, THEY HAD TO WEAR A HEAD COVERING, AND IT WAS LAW.
THEY COULDN'T LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT IT.
IT WAS ALMOST LIKE A REINVENTION OF WHAT THOSE LADIES LOOKED LIKE A LONG TIME AGO AND THE VARIETY AND HOW CREATIVE THEY HAD TO BE TO COME UP WITH THE DIFFERENT STYLES THAT THEY HAD TO WEAR AS A WAY TO IMPRESS WHAT BECAME AN ENHANCEMENT.
IT IS SUCH AN HONOR TO BE SHOW CASING ARTISTS WHO ARE LOCAL AND NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BECAUSE IT REALLY REFLECTS THE EXTENT TO WHICH OUR COMMUNITY HAS AN ABILITY TO INVITE ARTISTS AND PERSPECTIVES FROM ALL AROUND THE GLOBE.
MUSEUMS HELP SCHRANGE OUR WORLD BY INTRODUCING US TO HOW LARGE AND VAST THE WORLD IS, BUT HELPING UNIFY US AROUND THESE COMMON THINGS AND THESE THINGS WE HAVE IN COMMON.
