Ballast Research

Special | 4m 59s

Possible solutions to prevent invasive species entering the Great Lakes in ballast water.

Zebra mussels and other invasive species likely entered the Great Lakes in the ballast water of ships. These invasives have had a devastating impact on the Lakes' ecology. It may be possible to develop a method of treating ballast water to kill or filter out invasives. To see if these new methods can be safe and effective, a new test facility has been constructed on Superior's harbor.
