PBS North, and Great Lakes Aquarium, Glensheen, Lake Superior Railroad Museum.
Sites that match a variety of both interests of the youth and areas of Duluth.
Does that sound okay?
The program has been around for more than 20 years.
It started as a collaboration between St. Louis County and the University of Minnesota Extension.
And there are four main goals of the program.
1.
To increase youth volunteerism in the community and get them more connected to their communities; 2.
To build job skills; 3.
To connect with a positive adult role model.
And at the end of the program: 4.
They can earn up to $200 towards a recreational or cultural activity of their choice.
And so that helps them get more connected to other positive development experiences.
I love being able to do the check ins over the summer, so I visit each site and check in on the volunteers in action and it's always just a really positive experience for both sides.
The mentors really enjoy what the youth contribute to their site, and the youth really get a good experience by being out and volunteering.
