A RIGHT TO ABORTION, NEARLY 824,000 VOTER SIGNATURES, MORE THAN TWICE THE REQUIRED NUMBER AND SUPPORTERS SAY THAT IT'S THE MOST EVER SUBMITTED FOR A BALLOT MEASURE IN STATE HISTORY.
IN ADDITION TO PUTTING IT IN THE STATE CONSTITUTION, ANY LAW OR POLICY OR PRACTICE THAT DENIES THAT BEFORE A FETUS IS VIABLE.
>>> AN INITIATIVE CAMPAIGN THAT CALLS FOR OPEN PRIMARY ELECTIONS SUBMITTED 180,000 SIGNATURES, WELL ABOVE THE REQUIREMENT.
IT CALLS FOR ALL CANDIDATES TO APPEAR ON THE SAME BALLOT AND EFFECTIVELY ENDING TAXPAYER FUNDING FOR PARTISAN PRIMARIES.
SUPPORTERS SAY THAT ELIMINATES DISCRIMINATION BASED ON PARTY AFFILIATION.
>>> CALLING FOR PRESIDENT BIDEN TO WITHDRAW FROM THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE.
THEY SAID THAT THE PRESIDENT NEEDS TO SHOULDER THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEMOCRATS KEEPING THE SEAT AND PART OF THAT RESPONSIBILITY IS TO GET OUT OF THIS RACE.
ADDING THAT THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO LOOK ELSEWHERE.
THE SECOND DEMOCRAT IN THE HOUSE CALLING FOR BIDEN TO WITHDRAW AFTER LAST WEEK'S PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE.
BUT PRESIDENT BIDEN VOWED TO STAY IN THE RACE AND KEEP HIS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN RUNNING.
ALONG WITH KAMALA HARRIS, HE MADE A SURPRISE APPEARANCE ON THE CALL TODAY, DESCRIBED BY THOSE IN APPEARANCE AS A PEP TALK, BIDEN SAYING I'M RUNNING AND THE LEADER OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND NO ONE IS PUSHING ME OUT.
AND THEY SAID THAT BIDEN HAS NO PLANS TO PUSH HIMSELF OUT.
SAYING THAT HE IS CONSIDERING WITHDRAWING FROM THE RACE?
>> THAT IS FALSE.
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF RUMORS OUT THERE AND THE PRESIDENT IS IN THE RACE TO WIN IT.
AND HE'S THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE.
FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE, WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING THAT WE CAN TO BUILD AN APPARATUS TO REACH VOTERS >> GAS PRICES THE AREA ARE UP, AN AVERAGE OF $3.60, 6 CENTS HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
THE PRICE INCREASED IN THE LAST DAYS, AND 15 CENTS FROM LAST WEEK.
THE PRICE OF GAS IS STILL 30 CENTS LOWER THAN THIS TIME LAST YEAR, BUT INCREASED DEMAND OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND AND THE HURRICANE SEASON COULD MEAN HIGHER PRICES DOWN THE ROAD.
>>> 30,000 JOBS LAST MONTH, THE INCREASE WAS LOWER THAN EXPECTED AND A PULLBACK FROM MAY.
AND IT WAS MORE WIDESPREAD.
42% OF NEW JOBS IN JUNE WERE IN THE LEISURE AND HOSPITALITY SECTOR.
>>> KUMER PRICE INCREASES WERE DOWN MORE THAN EXPECTED IN MAY AND THE FED RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT IT WAS HOLDING INTEREST RATES STEADY.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THE CURRENT ECONOMY AND ECONOMIC CONDITIONS IN THE FUTURE?
JOINING US NOW, IS IT THE CONSUMER PRICES UP 3.5% YEAR-OVER-YEAR IN MAY AND NOT DOWN ALL THAT MUCH, BUT THE INCREASE IS NOT THAT GOOD NEWS >> IT'S A GOOD DATA POINT, SO MONTH OVER MONTH, IT'S ZERO AND THAT'S A GOOD DATA READING.
THE FED LIKES TO LOOK AT THE PCE, THE PERM CONSUMPTION INDEX AS WELL AND THAT'S UP 2.6% YEAR-OVER-YEAR AND IT READ MONTH OVER MONTH.
AND THAT'S A GOOD STARTING POINT >> AND THE BASIS IS FLAT IN A COUPLE OF YEARS?
>> WELL, WE HAD SOME FLAT MONTHS AT THE END OF 2023 AND THAT WAS OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER AND THAT WAS THAT ILL-FATED ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE FED, SAYING THAT IT'S COMING DOWN, AND WE'LL HAVE THREE RATE CUTS IN 2024, AND THEN IT THEY HAD ANOTHER JUMP IN JANUARY, SO BY THEIR RECENT HISTORY, THEY'RE GOING TO WAIT FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE THEY MAKE A MOVE >> IT WAS JULY, BUT WE'RE GOING TO GET TO THE SECOND HERE, IS IT GAS?
IS IT HOMES?
WHAT STILL IS KIND OF PUSHING INFLATION?
>> PUSHING UP INFLATION, YEAH.
THE HOUSING PRICES, IT'S A LITTLE BIT OF AN INTERESTING FORMULA IN THE INFLATION INDEX.
WHAT YOU WOULD PAY IN RENT FOR A HOUSE AND REALLY IT'S LOOKING AT WHAT THE RENTAL MARKET IS DOING, AND THAT'S GOING UP, AND GAS PRICES HAS BEEN A BRIGHT SPOT IN LOWERING INFLATION.
WE HAVE SEEN YEAR-OVER-YEAR COSTS BUT INFLATION AND INSURANCE COSTS HAVE GONE UP AND IT'S A MIXED BAG AS FAR AS PRICES INCREASING >> SO SHELTER COSTS AND STILL MORE INFLATION AS A WHOLE?
>> YES, AND AGAIN, IT'S KIND OF A VOLATILE INDEX MONTH OVER MONTH, BUT THOSE ARE THE MONTHS PUSHING INFLATION UP FOR NOW.
>> I KEEP HEARING THAT CAR INSURANCE IS UP BIG TIME.
AND I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY.
>> AND I DON'T HAVE A GOOD ANSWER FOR YOU EITHER.
BUT YES, WE DID NOTICE THAT IN THE INDEX.
INSURANCE OF ALL TYPES, AND THAT WAS THE SURPRISE IN JANUARY.
THAT WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CATEGORIES THAT HAD A JUMP IN COSTS AND KEPT INFLATION HIGH.
>> SO LET'S GET TO THE FED, HOLDING STEADY.
NO CUTS, BUT NO INCREASES AND THEY WERE KIND OF PROPOSING ALL SORTS OF STUFF THIS YEAR AND WE HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING, WHAT'S GOING ON?
>> IT'S WHAT THE FORECASTERS WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE EVERY SIX WEEKS, SO I WOULDN'T PUT MUCH ON THAT, BUT THE MARKET, THE INTEREST RATE CUTS AND THE REAL ESTATE MARKET FOR THEM, LOOSENING UP THE HOUSING MARKET AND GETTING MORE BUYERS IN HERE AND THAT'S NOT THE CASE, AND THE FED HAS LOW UNEMPLOYMENT AND WE HAVE HAD GREAT UNEMPLOYMENT NUMBERS IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS AND THAT HAS GIVEN THEM THE TIME AND THE PATIENCE TO KEEP FIGHTING INFLATION AND TRY TO GET TO THEIR 2% TART >> IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THE ECONOMY IS STEADY WITH WHAT WE HAVE SEEN IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, AND IS THAT THE REASON THAT THE ECONOMY IS STEADY?
ARE THEY DOING A GOOD BALANCING ACT >> THEY ARE BENEFITING FROM A REALLY GOOD EMPLOYMENT MARKET.
A BETTER THAN EXPECTED ABOUT EMPLOYMENT MARKET, WHERE EVERYONE WORRIED ABOUT THESE HIGH INTEREST RATES CAUSING A RECESSION, THAT THE BUSINESSES WILL FULLBACK AND BORROWING IS HIGHER AND THE PROJECTS, AND HIGHER INTEREST RATES THEY DON'T, SO THAT WAS THE WORRY, IF WE KEEP INTEREST RATES HIGH FOR THIS LONG, THERE'S A CHANCE OF A HARD LANDING AS OPPOSED TO WHAT THE FED IS SAYING, THAT WE ARE LOWERING ECONOMIC ACTIVITY ENOUGH TO GET RID OF JOB OPENINGS THAT DON'T EVEN HAVE A PERM WORK.
REDUCE THE OPENINGS AND WORK IT AS BALANCE.
AND THEY'RE JUST TRYING TO GET THE LABOR SUPPLY AND DEMAND IN BALANCE AND TAMP DOWN INFLATION.
SO BECAUSE THEY HAVE A GOOD EMPLOYMENT MARKET, WE CAN KEEP THESE INTEREST RATES HIGH >> AND THAT'S WHY THE FED IS KEEPING THE INTEREST RATES HIGH.
NORMALLY THEY THINK OF MORTGAGES.
THE IF THE FED CONTROLS THE INTEREST RATES, THE IMPACT ON THE ECONOMY IS PRETTY STRONG, IS IT NOT?
>> YES, IT IS.
THEY'RE ENCOURAGING SAVING RIGHT NOW, AND IT'S WORKING, AND WE BELIEVE THAT THE CURRENT POLICY THAT THE FED HAS IS A GOOD ONE FOR THE LONG-TERM HEALTH OF THE ECONOMY.
WE WANT LOW INFLATION LONG-TERM.
>> WHAT INDICES ARE SAYING I KIND OF LIKE THE WAY THINGS ARE RIGHT NOW?
>> I THINK MOST INDUSTRIES WOULD LOVE AN INTEREST RATE CUT.
CONSUMERS MAKE UP 77% OF THE ECONOMY AND WE LOVE TO BORROW.
IF THE BORROWING COSTS ARE LOW, WE'RE GOING TO SPEND MORE, BUT MOSTLY, IT'S THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY.
WE HAVE SEEN IT HERE, WE SEE IT NATIONALLY.
A 7% MORTGAGE RATE IS TOO HIGH FOR SOMEONE WHO STILL REMEMBERS WHEN THEY COULD GET A 3% MORTGAGE.
SO WE'RE DRAMATICALLY LOWER IN TERMS OF SALES VOLUME FOR RESAIL HOMES, AND THE REAL ESTATE MARKET IS IMPROVING THIS YEAR IN PHOENIX, DOING QUITE WELL, BECAUSE THEY CAN HAVE LOWER INTEREST RATES, AND OFFER A 5% RATE AS OPPOSED TO WHAT THE MARKET IS OFFERING AT 7.
SO THAT'S WHO IS REALLY -- ANYONE WHERE YOU HAVE TO BORROW.
SO ON THE DEVELOPMENT SIDE, A LOT OF APARTMENTS WITH PENCILING RIGHT NOW, WITH THE HIGHER INTEREST RATES.
SO CONSTRUCTION AND REAL ESTATE.

ARIZONA COMPARED TO THE COUNTRY, HOW ARE WE HANDLING ALL OF THIS?
>> OUR LAST READING IN PHOENIX WAS BETTER INFLATION THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
WHEN INFLATION IS AT ITS HIGHEST, PHOENIX IS HIGHER.

>> 2 OUT OF 3 SAID THAT THEY PLAN TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER, TRUE?
>> YES, THAT'S WHAT OUR SURVEY SHOWED AND IT'S LIKE AN AMAZING STORY, BECAUSE PART OF WHAT WE SAW IN THE SURVEY IS THERE'S AN ABIDING FACE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS, AND PEOPLE WANTING TO PARTICIPATE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE, BUT THAT LIVES SIDE BY SIDE WITH A TREMENDOUS SENSE OF DISCOMFORT, WITH THE WAY THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IS OPERATING.
SOMETHING LIKE 80% OF RESPONDENTS SAID THEY THINK THE DEMOCRATIC AND REPUBLICAN PARTIES ARE OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE FOLKS OF THEIR GENERATION.
SO THERE'S A LOT OF CONFLICT OUT THERE.
>> WE HAVE 80% SAYING THAT THE CURRENT POLITICAL SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK FOR THEIR GENERATION, AND DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS DON'T WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR THE COUNTRY.
THAT'S PRETTY CYNICAL.
>> REGISTERED VOTERS UNDER THE AGE OF 30 ARE DISTINCTLY INDEPENDENT.
39% OF THEM.
MORE THAN THE TWO PARTIES COMBINED.
IF I WAS PART OF THE CAMPAIGN FOR REPUBLICANS AND DEPUTIES, I WOULD BE VERY CONCERNED THAT 80% OF THE RESPONDENTS BASICALLY HAVE SAID THE PARTIES DON'T HAVE THE BEST INTEREST AND THEY DON'T REPRESENT THE INTEREST OF YOUNG PEOPLE.
AND WHEN WE DID THE FOCUS GROUPS AS WE DESIGNED THE SURVEY, PEOPLE WERE UPSET AND ANGRY.
>> WHAT ARE THEY MOST ANGRY ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO POLITICS AND THE TWO PARTIES RIGHT NOW?
>> CLOSE TO 60% THINK THAT ALL POLITICIANS ARE CORRUPT.
THAT'S AN INCREDIBLE NUMBER.
THEY FEEL THAT THE PARTIES HAVE RESTRICTED THE POLITICAL PROCESS, SO IF YOU LOOK AT SOME OF THE DATA POINTS, WE SAW THAT 95% OF YOUNG PEOPLE THINK THAT ALL VOTERS SHOULD HAVE COMPLETE AND EQUAL ACCESS TO THE ELECTORAL PROCESS REGARDLESS OF THEIR AFFILIATION, AND YOU SAW IN THE NEWS REPORTISH THE INITIATIVE JUST FILED FOR THE BALLOT WOULD DEAL WITH THAT QUESTION.
THEY THINK THE SYSTEM IS BIASED AND THEY WANT IT REFORMED.
>> THEY CAME OUT IN FOCUS GROUPS THAT YOUNG PEOPLE FELT THAT THE PARTIES WERE NOT HELPFUL IN GIVING THEM INFORMATION IN MAKING INFORMED DECISIONS.
THEY FELT THAT EVERY ISSUE WAS POLITICIZED AND IT WAS A BLACK AND WHITE RESPONSE AND SO MANY OF THE ISSUES THEY'RE STRUGGLING WITH WAS VERY COMPLEX >> SOUNDS LIKE EVERY ISSUE IS A SALES JOB.
>> IT I THINK THAT IT HAS TREMENDOUS IMPLICATIONS MOVING FORWARD >> OTHER BELIEFS AND CONCERNS, I WOULD IMAGINE HOUSING, INFLATION, AND SAME AS OTHERS BUT FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE >> COST OF LIVING, VERY BIG CONCERN.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING, VERY BIG CONCERN.
WATER SUPPLY, A VERY BIG CONCERN.
THAT WAS LIKE 81% OF RESPONDENTS AND FAIR AND SECURE ELECTIONS.
THAT POLLED VERY HIGH.
SO THERE'S KIND OF AN AWARENESS OUT THERE AMONG YOUNGER VOTERS THAT THERE'S A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM AND THERE'S LACK OF TRUST AND THAT THE SYSTEM ISN'T WORKING FOR THEM >> WHAT'S ENCOURAGING IS THAT DESPITE THE FRUSTRATIONS OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM, DESPITE OTHER AVENUES TO VOICE THEIR CONCERN, THEY'RE INDICATING THAT THEY'RE GOING TO SHOW UP AT THE BALLOT BOX >> ARE THEY INDICATING CERTAIN TYPES OF CANDIDATES?
OBVIOUSLY YOU RAN INTO SOME ISSUES, BUT THEY'RE GOING TO SHOW UP AND WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO VOTE FOR AND WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO VOTE AGAINST?
>> WHEN WE LOOKED AT THE ISSUES, ECONOMICS, SECURE ELECTIONS, OTHER ISSUES, UNDERSCORES THEY'RE ENGAGED AND ALSO REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS.
BUT WE ASKED THEM THE QUESTION ABOUT BALLOT INITIATIVES, PARTICULARLY FOR THOSE THAT DID NOT VOTE, THAT THEY REGISTERED IN 2020 AND DID NOT VOTE, INDEPENDENT, THE BALLOT ISSUE OF REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND FAIR ELECTIONS, AND -- WERE ALL DRIVERS AND INDICATORS THAT IT'S GOING TO DRIVE THEM TO THE POLLS >> WHAT -- I KNOW THAT YOU GUYS ASKED ABOUT WHERE GEN Z VOTERS GET THEIR NEWS AND INFORMATION, AND WHAT DID YOU FIND OUT?

BUT A LOT OF IT IS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA.

AND THE FOCUS GROUPS, WE GOOGLE AND WE DON'T TAKE ANYTHING AT FACE VALUE.
WE ARE INTRODUCED TO IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT WE DON'T FACT CHECK AND I FOUND THAT ENCOURAGING >> INDEED.
AND CAN YOU COMPARE -- I KNOW IT'S DIFFICULT TO DO, BUT CAN YOU COMPARE TO PREVIOUS GENERATIONS?
IT SEEMS AWFULLY CYNICAL FOR YOUNG FOLKS, BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK?
>> ONE THING THAT I WOULD SAY, I ONCE HAD A CONVERSATION WITH HOWARD DEAN.
OH, YEAH, YOUNG PEOPLE ARE REGISTERING AS INDEPENDENTS BUT THEY'RE GOING TO TURN OUT TO BE DEMOCRATS BECAUSE THERE'S NO PLACE ELSE TO GO.
I DON'T THINK THAT'S GOING TO BE THE CASE GOING FORWARD AND PART WHAT HAVE WE SAW, THAT 40% OF GEN Z VOTERS WOULD CONSIDER VOTING FOR AN INDEPENDENT PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.
THEY'RE VERY AFRAID.
