Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipHello, I'm Pia Toscano, coming to you from Nashville, Tennessee.
And this is Classicalia, a brand new PBS competition that's on the search for the greatest young classical musicians in the world.
We received entries from performers all over.
Now, the 12 performers who rose to the top will face off.
Who will win?
You'll have to watch to find out.
Now, I am thrilled to talk to Gisela Dekort Mesalles, who is in Vienna.
Hello, Gisela.
How are you feeling?
Hello.
I'm really excited to be here again.
Now, when did you start playing the saxophone?
I started playing the saxophone when I was five years old in this music school.
And then I went to the conservatory and now I'm at the Superior Conservatory at Barcelona.
That's incredible.
And how many hours a day do you have to practice for a competition like this or just to be as incredible at this craft as you are?
I play like three or four hours a day.
That is so inspiring.
What made you want to choose the saxophone?
I was between the piano, but the- My parents were separated, so I couldn't get the piano from one place to the other.
Then I thought about the clarinet, but I didn't choose it, because my sister played the clarinet.
So I got the saxophone.
And I'm really, really happy to play the saxophone.
Beautiful.
And how would you feel if you won the entire Classicalia competition?
I would feel really proud and really amazed and excited.
Well, we are rooting for you and you're doing so amazing.
Thank you so much, Gisela.
What an incredible performance.
Now, I am thrilled to talk to Andrew Sijie Li.
Now, do you like to hear other musicians playing the music that you're working on?
Yeah, I think it's, uh.
It really opens your eyes to, you know, different interpretations, different ... And it inspires you a lot to kind of change up your playing and, yeah, make it your own.
So, yeah, I definitely enjoy hearing many different interpretations.
That's amazing.
We are so grateful to have you in this competition.
Thank you.
Best of luck.
Oh, my gosh.
Andrew, I can't believe you're only 14 years old.
That was stunning.
I don't know how the judges are going to make this decision, but we can only choose one.
So now it's time to introduce our three judges, Albert Franz, who is a Bösendorfer artist, a concert pianist and an educator.
Gerald Grünbacher is the founder and managing director of the Vienna Mozart Orchestra and a former clarinetist with the Vienna Philharmonic.
And Christina Petrowska Quilico, who's a virtuoso pianist.
Let's go to our host in Vienna, Arabella Fenyves.
Let's hear what the judges have to say about your performances.
Gerald?
Let's start with Andrew.
It was a really, really great performance.
It's enjoyable to listen to your music.
And you, Gisela, It's amazing, your tone, your range, from the pianississimo to the fortissimo - it's great.
And what you can do with your instrument is impressive.
It's a big, big impression for me.
Thank you, Gerald.
Albert?
Gisela, you played with was such an extraordinary expressive range and tonal range.
So here you really put emotion behind every single note.
And it always feels like it has its place in the whole story.
Wonderful artistry and such a pleasure to listen to you.
And Andrew.
I have to say, I didn't expect this.
I had to keep checking.
Wait, is he really 14?
Is that it?
Something that you don't expect - that you really don't expect from an artist of your age is this the sense of Beethoven's architecture and his architecture as storytelling and you were able to do that.
And it's only going to grow.
So hats off.
This is absolutely wonderful.
Thank you, Albert.
Now, Christina.
With the saxophone, I mean, I felt like dancing.
And really was involved in the emotional content.
And with Andrew, the opening was so thoughtful, and I felt that you embraced the silence.
You took time, which really a 14 year-old- Ie rarely heard that great maturity.
And a counterpoint to the left hand, which I often don't hear.
So a little dialogue.
Lovely details in both your play.
So bravo again.
Now we can only pick one of you as the winner of the Classicalia intermediate competition.
So that means we have to make a choice.
And the winner is ... Andrew Sijie Li.
Congratulations!
Thank you.
How do you feel?
I feel really honored and really excited to have this opportunity be presented to me.
So yeah, I'm really thankful for this.
Thank you for watching Classicalia.
I hope you will support programs like this with a contribution to your local PBS station.
It's so important that the arts continue to shine a light for future generations.
Thank you so much.
