What do you think, Abu Dhabi?
Huh?
What?
That's right.
Well, good evening everyone, and welcome to this year's International Jazz Day, global concert from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
(crowd cheering) Do you know today marks the 14th time the world has come together for such a jazz day.
Millions of people of all ages are celebrating this jazz day all over the world.
The spirit of jazz is alive in classrooms, community centers, theaters, in town squares, to name a few, with concerts, education programs and outreach initiatives taking place in over 190 countries.
Jazz is, at its core, a constant act of reinvention.
It's about listening to each other.
And in that spirit, there's something we can all take to heart.
Jazz Day has become a powerful global movement, one that reaches across borders, beliefs, and generations to touch and inspire millions of lives.
And through the language of jazz, we discover common ground.
We foster understanding, we create unity, and we add the rich ever evolving story of our shared humanity (crowd cheering) (jazz music) ♪ There's a somebody I'm longing to see ♪ ♪ I hope that he, turns out to be ♪ ♪ Someone who'll watch over me ♪ ♪ I'm a little lamb that's lost in the wood ♪ ♪ I know I could, always be good ♪ ♪ To one who'll watch over me ♪ ♪ Although he may not be ♪ ♪ The man some folks think of ♪ ♪ As handsome ♪ ♪ To my heart he carries the key ♪ ♪ Won't you tell him please to put on some speed ♪ ♪ Follow my lead ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ How I need ♪ ♪ Someone to watch over me ♪ ♪ Yeah ♪ (jazz music) (jazz music) Yes.

You may not speak the same language, but when you start to play, everything comes out.
So I think that's important.
That's what's gonna move the world forward.
(jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (crowd cheering) - The most important part of the jazz is the session of improvisation.
It's this thing that you create in the moment and you cannot repeat that.
You know, you cannot play the same solo twice.
Jazz is synonymous of freedom.
- I think one of the most incredible things is that jazz as an art form and Cuban music and Latin jazz, I mean, they all come from the same tree.
I think this is such an incredible opportunity to see all of those things on the same stage.
And oftentimes you don't get to see that.
You get to see them compartmentalized in these little boxes, but it really is the same.
It's the same group.
(jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) - [Band Member] Hip pa!

Music is unspeakable, this is why we play, 'cause it speaks the unspeakable.
In improvisation you really let go but you have to abandon yourself to the spirit.
And so when the spirit sings, is when I sing.
(jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (jazz music) (crowd cheering) - Was that incredible or what?
You know, as musicians, music is our life.
We live and breathe music.
Individual expression is cool.
But the really cool thing about International Jazz Day is that it's about much more than just music.
At its heart, this celebration is about something we feel very deeply about, and that's education.
That's really important.
So sit and watch as we show you a meaningfully deep aspect of International Jazz Day.
♪ Jingo ♪ ♪ Jingo ba ♪ - Kids have such a imaginative way of thinking.
- Let's try that again.
And I think if we really engage that at this age, it's such a powerful thing.
And we do it through music.
♪ Jingo ♪ ♪ Jingo ba ♪ Somebody else may be from a different culture, a different place in the world.
But all that falls apart when you're just in the moment human to human connecting.
The act of listening is, it's an active thing.
I think music has power to bring out the element of light and of joy and of connection and of spirit that is vibrant in everybody.
- We're gonna do a little presentation on the history of jazz.
(jazz music) - Good afternoon, we're welcoming you into our living room.
It's wonderful to come to International Jazz Day and see everybody on the same page.
'Cause sometimes you have to see somebody doing something to make you feel like it's okay to do it.
I think that's something that hopefully will make young girls decide, "Oh yeah, I can do that."
I didn't see any other women play drums ever until I got to college.
But I was so young when I started, I never really thought about it.
There's a level of entertainment, but it's not what we think of the most, entertaining people.
We think about inspiring people.
- The piano player could jab the piano anytime he wants to make it sound more like jazz.
We call that comping.
And that's how jazz works.

Gershwin called it a musical kaleidoscope of America.
It was bold, elegant, and unapologetically modern.
A collision between classical music and jazz, blurring the lines between traditional form and the popular spirit of the time.
Jazz is at its core, a constant act of reinvention.
It's about listening to each other.
The music literally reimagines itself with every note and every phrase and every breath.
Like the great architect Frank Gehry, who by the way is with us tonight.
(crowd cheering) What he said about architecture was "Architecture's like jazz, you improvise.
You work together, you play off each other.
You make something, they make something."

Ladies and gentlemen, friends, fellow musicians, and all of you joining us here tonight in beautiful Abu Dhabi with its vibrant cultural heritage and bold vision for the future.
As we gather together across borders and cultures, we're reminded that music is a universal language that speaks to our shared humanity.
And jazz... You know what jazz is?
It's the perfect translator.
As my best friend and jazz visionary, Wayne Shorter once said, "For me the word jazz means... I dare you."
(crowd cheering) So tonight, let's continue to affirm our commitment to music and jazz's enduring legacy by honoring its pioneers and nurturing the next generation of musicians who will carry its message forward.

But now I'm afraid our global concert comes to a close.
Each year we end with a song that has become an anthem.
Not just to peace, but a possibility.
A song that echoes far beyond the notes and lyrics.
A song that lives in the hearts of dreamers everywhere and a vision of what the world could be if only we chose to imagine it together.
It was John Lennon who gave us this vision.
(crowd cheering) "Imagine" is beloved by billions.
Not just a song, but as a beacon of hope.
So thank you all for being with us and part of this unforgettable evening.
