Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshiplate yesterday congresswoman Mikie Sherrill Mikie Sherrill joined the small but vocal group of lawmakers calling for President Biden to step out of the 20124 presidential race now Cheryl's the only lawmaker in New Jersey to take this stand and one of just a handful of congressional Democrats saying it's time for Biden to pass the torch closed door meetings were held among Democratic caucus members yesterday leaving many wondering whether the dominoes would begin to fall within the party but many seem to be remain standing at this Point holding in their support of the president but it's a tenuous place to be with less than 6 weeks to go before the Democratic National Convention where President Biden's nomination will be confirmed so will we see a massive shift between then and now North Jersey media.com colonist Charlie style wrote a piece looking at where New Jersey leaders are landing on the matter and he's here now to talk about the broader implications Charlie great to talk to you so we see you know a lot of Discord playing out right in front of our and while Democrats still remain pretty split on whether the President should step aside should pass the torch just taking a step back and looking at it does that move if the president were to do so would that send the Democratic party into a tail spin to you mean to to withdraw and step aside I I I think um I think you'll see a the fear is that that we'll have a or the Democratic party will crumble into a civil war between the more progressives and the centrists about the future of the party and which standard Bearer would be the more uh likely person uh to do to carry the torch or to unify the party and I I think it it that's the big fear right now is that As Trump sort of skates around goes to Ries and just watches the uh Democratic party train wreck the Democrat party is losing the opportunity to prosecute the case against him and losing the chance to win so essentially what I hear you saying is this is a timing issue and the more time that goes by the harder it is and yet we saw late yesterday uh congresswoman Mikey Cheryl the first of anyone in New Jersey to boldly call for the president to step aside essentially saying she doesn't believe that he can win does Mikey Cheryl doing this and and those who have joined in this call does that sign then to voters a lack of confidence within the party and then some who may have supported the president say you know maybe I'm not going to turn out to vote how what impact does this have on voters well I I think in a lot of ways it's a gamble it's a bet that the voters uh are with her in this position I'm talking about congresswoman Cheryl that there are enough people in her sort of now moderate District it's a it's a Centrist district with a strong liberal base in her hometown area she's gambling that majority of people in her District share that view that he has to go and that there is no chance to win with Joe Biden at the top of the ticket I don't I'm not so sure that's a uniform feeling across the state though we're seeing other members of Congress New Jersey members of Congress rally behind Joe Biden so I think it's a really fluid situation I don't think there's any clear picture yet for you know any kind of consensus yet for the Democratic party right now the black Congressional caucus is standing behind the president hakeim Jeff is standing behind the president we have Bonnie Watson Coleman here in New Jersey so already as you're saying there is that split is the the endorsement of the black Congressional caucus enough to secure the president's position where this really this movement doesn't pick up enough steam I think it's a very important one black voters particularly Black Women Voters have been a loyal um firewall for President Biden um so I I I think that's enough I think that will be a very important if he is able to hold the line um and and stabilize I think that will be a a look back on their support will be their support will be seen as key yeah one of the more interesting things is that that you have now some of the more Progressive members of Congress Who had who been uh upset with Biden over things like Gaza are now rallying behind him and ironically calling him the most Progressive President we have ever had and they're out there hoping to use this moment to push him to the left well thank you for the analysis Charlie style as always we're going to be watching I know you'll be following it good to have you on tonight sure my pleasure
