State Climatologist David Robinson explains why hurricane activity is picking up

Forecasters predicted the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season would be historically busy, but for much of the summer things were quiet. That has changed in recent weeks, most notably with Hurricane Fiona slamming Puerto Rico and Canada. A new storm, Hurricane Ian, is set to make landfall in Florida later this week.
