Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipso will Donald Trump join his challengers in the next debate he's not focused on that right now the former president instead turning himself into the Fulton County jail in Georgia tonight he left Bedminster earlier today for what will be his fourth arraignment but plenty of factors make this Georgia case unique I'm joined right now by former New Jersey Attorney General John farmer to talk it through John great to have you with us now we know the former president Donald Trump will surrender to Fulton County jail tonight just talk us through what we're going to see what's going to happen so this is uh this is basically an arraignment on the uh on last week's indictment on under the Georgia RICO statute uh he'll appeal before a judge his rights will be read the charges will be read to him um and the bill will be set and I I gather they've already agreed on a bail amount of two hundred thousand dollars under Georgia law he can post 10 percent of that twenty thousand dollars and secure his release um the purpose of bail is to secure someone's reappearance in court it's a little bit absurd in case of Mr Trump because where is he going to go it is will be a mug shot we haven't seen that before we've seen that for all of the other 18 co-defendants yeah and this will be I think this will be his first mug shot so to speak at standard practice uh when someone's arrested um uh to be fingerprinted and have their uh the photograph taken and uh it's just a normal part of the process and he's like everybody else being subjected to that process now these are Ricoh charges just talk us through what some of the most significant charges are here that he'll face well the RICO statute is deliberately very broad it's to capture a racketeering activity it's corruption on an Enterprise scale and this is really I would say the kitchen sink indictment um and basically it captures all of the efforts um uh that that President Trump is alleged to have engaged in to overturn uh the election in Georgia and and also the the uh the national election so um part of Rico is predicate acts which are uh any act doesn't necessarily have to be criminal that's in furtherance of the conspiracy uh to overthrow the election so clearly Central to this case is going to be his phone call to Brad raffensberger the Georgia Secretary of State where he asked him to find 11 000 votes uh but but it also goes much deeper than that and encompasses actions taken in other states uh to further the conspiracy that's alleged to basically change the results of the 2020 election John how do you compare this case to some of the other the three other indictments really when it comes to evidence when it comes to how strong this case is hard to tell how strong the case is I think it's going to be a very complex case to try this is sort of the it's sort of the yin and yang with the with the January 6th indictment federally they chose to be very lean very focused and that will be a very a much quicker trial and easier trial to accomplish they simply have to to prove the efforts to obstruct Congress on the January 6th so the federal government chose to do a much more streamlined indictment probably because they want to try the case in a quicker fashion and John just finally there have been attempts made to delay some of these Court proceedings until after the election this is always kind of that balance of the the perception perhaps that there's election interference Happening Here with these cases how does a judge come to that decision I think the judge if he does his job he will let the actual merits of the case decide the pace and I don't think the Judge can be concerned about the calendar he can't he's got to make sure that the case is tried um you know not based on Election timetable based on the merits of the case yeah great Insight John farmer New Jersey's former Attorney General and director of the Eagleton Institute of politics at Rutgers University thank you so much thanks for having me
