Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(folksy banjo music) - [Narrator] President George Washington was the only Founding Father to run unopposed for reelection until James Monroe.
James Monroe was the fifth US president.
During the war, he served in the Continental Army and developed a strong relationship with Washington.
But during America's early years, they fell into different political factions.
Monroe's first diplomatic mission to France ended with him called back in disgrace.
Washington disapproved of his republican principles.
Monroe felt this was unjust and shared his grievances publicly, cementing their rift.
We're not sure if they ever mended their relationship, but during his presidency, Monroe mirrored some of Washington's values, suggesting their relationship was healed, or at least that some respect was restored.
