Every region has its dog heroes and canine companions.
In the latest episode of "Mossback's Northwest," host Knute Berger introduces us to dogs who have been explorers, movie stars, and dogs who have kept us warm.
Salish peoples made blankets from the fur of woolly dogs.
The breed, now thought extinct, resembled large fluffy Pomeranians.
Like sheep, their coats were sheared annually.
A terrier mix named Owney became the postal service's mascot in 1888, riding train mail cars to the Northwest and around the country.
He even took an around-the-world publicity trip.
And yes, Owney had his own postage stamp.
Finally, Lassie was a movie star, stealing the spotlight from a young Elizabeth Taylor.
Berger claims Lassie as a Northwest dog because in the 1940s, much of the filming of "Lassie" movies was done near Lake Chelan.
