Five years ago, 15-year-old Aji Piper was one of a number of youth plaintiffs who sued Washington and other states for failing to safeguard his life and liberty by curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
Over a decade ago, Washington, British Columbia, and Oregon pledged to cut greenhouse gases by 2020.
This is a region that considers itself a global leader on climate action.
But none of the jurisdictions have cut gases.
In fact, according to InvestigateWest, emissions increased 5 to 7% in Washington and Oregon, and B.C.
's emissions grew at a rate five times the Canadian average.
Last September, 20-year-old Aji Piper was in federal court, hearing the Washington Attorney General's Office tell judges that they could not hold the state legally responsible for its part in the climate crisis.
Meanwhile, California drove its emissions down by 5% between 2012 and 2018.
