(calm music) Sidewalk accessibility is a year-round problem for people with disabilities or mobility issues.
Snow and ice cause even more challenges.
A large proportion of Seattle sidewalks between 80 and 85%, are next to private property.
During snowstorms, the responsibility for clearing sidewalks falls to property owners, which leaves many sidewalks unshovelled and difficult to maneuver.
Unshovelled sidewalks can prevent wheelchair users from getting home during a snow storm, and slippery ice is even more of a hazard.
Crosscut spoke to wheelchair users who want snow plow drivers to be more cautious of where they push snow.
Piles of snow are often dumped on sidewalks or left on the shoulder of the road, a space those in wheelchairs sometimes use when no sidewalks are available.
