Before the depression, St. Louis had a number of auto manufacturers. One of St. Louis’ biggest fires broke out in 1962 in subzero temperatures. Former Fire Chief Tom Long talks fighting the fire and bitter cold at the Ralston Purina Checkerboard Square headquarters. Although he would was too old to be called to service in World War II, St. Louis Rabbi Ferdinand Isserman was determined to serve.
