Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- My name is Robyn Wu.
I go to Emma Willard School.
I'm a senior, and I play piano.
(brooding piano music) The piece I play today is "Troubled Water."
"Troubled Water" is based off of the spiritual melody "Wade in the Water," and the theme is like that.
♪ Wade in the water ♪ And that theme comes back again and again, and you have to really make sure you're voicing out that theme, because it shows up again and again in each section.
It's almost fantasy-like.
It takes the main theme, and it twists and turns it through various sections.
(scampering piano music) (commanding piano music) My teacher actually started researching and playing female composers last year, and I like how this piece...
It was written by Margaret Bonds, an African American female composer, and having that bit of diversity in my repertoire was nice.
(momentous piano music) I think the jazzier sections are more difficult to play because the chords are very big and, like, rich in my hands and there's a lot of different notes that are almost dissonant and it's hard to, like, tell the chord that you're actually playing (chuckles).
(brooding piano music) I started playing when I was five years old.
At first, it was kind of like a hobby, but as I grew older and with the guidance of Dr. Kim, it became something that I really enjoyed.
In a normal school year, I usually practice, like, in between classes or after homework is done.
Our school has a lot of nice pianos, so it's very easy to slip into a practice room.
(despairing piano music) (jaunty piano music) I hope to continue playing in ensemble groups or practice myself in college.
Dr. Young Kim nominated me, my teacher.
I'd like to thank Dr. Young Kim.
She's really helped guide me through my growth as a pianist and as a person as well.
I'd like to thank, of course, my family.
(jaunty piano music continues) (momentous piano music) (accomplished music)
