TONIGHT ON "GREATER BOSTON," IN AN EFFORT TO HELP MORE DISPLACED PEOPLE RESETTLE IN THE U.S., THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION IS INVITING PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME TO DIRECTLY SPONSOR THE ARRIVAL OF REFUGEES IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
IT'S MODELED AFTER A PROGRAM ALREADY UNDERWAY FOR PEOPLE FLEEING UKRAINE.
ONE MEMBER OF THAT PROGRAM, NOW SETTLED IN NEW ENGLAND, WILL JOIN ME AHEAD.
THEN, REVOLUTIONS IN A.I.
ARE THREATENING THE WORLD OF ACADEMIA AS WE KNOW IT.
WE WILL TAKE A LOOK AT CHAT GPT AND THE VERY REAL REPERCUSSIONS IT IS HAVING AT COLLEGES IN BOSTON AND BEYOND.
>> Reilly: WHEN RUSSIA INVADED UKRAINE NEARLY A YEAR AGO, MILLIONS WERE FORCED TO FLEE THE COUNTRY.
AND SINCE THEN, SEVERAL THOUSAND OF THEM HAVE COME TO THE U.S. THAT INCLUDES OLEKSANDRA CHEPENKI, WHO CAME TO NEW ENGLAND LAST FALL, ALONG WITH HER SON, THANKS TO A PROGRAM CALLED "UNITING FOR UKRAINE".
IT WAS FIRST LAUNCHED LAST APRIL, AND ALLOWS UKRAINIAN REFUGEES TO COME TO THE U.S. FOR UP TO TWO YEARS, WITH REGULAR AMERICANS SERVING AS SPONSORS.
AND NOW, THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION IS EXPANDING ON THE IDEA BEHIND THE UNITING FOR UKRAINE PROGRAM, WITH THE NEWLY ANNOUNCED "WELCOME CORPS," WHICH WILL ALLOW CITIZEN SPONSORS FOR REFUGEES COMING FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, TOO: >> THE WELCOME CORPS IS THE BOLDEST INNOVATION IN THE US REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT IN FOUR DECADES AND IT REFLECTS THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION'S COMMITMENT TO EXPAND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AS WE REBUILD OUR REFUGEE PROGRAM.

AND SHE MOVED TO THE U.S.
THIS STARTED TOGETHER THEY STARTED TOGETHER IN THE UNIVERSITY AND THEN I HIRED HER TO WORK AT OUR PUBLISHING HOUSE IN UKRAINE.
SHE WAS A TRANSLATOR.
ENGLISH TRANSLATOR.
AND WHEN SHE HEARD THE TERNL NEWS ABOUT RUSSIAN ATTACKS, OF COURSE SHE CALLED ME.
AND ASKED ME WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU.
CAN I HELP YOU.
SHOW.
WELL, IN THAT TIME I DIDN'T PLAN TO COME TO THE U.S.
BUT ANYWAY, SHE TRIED TO HELP ME HOW SHE COULD.
AND WE DECIDE WITH MY FAMILY TO GO TO BULGARIA.
AND SPEND SUMMER THERE, BECAUSE OF MY SON, FOR HIM TO BE BY THE SEASIDE BECAUSE HE HAS SOME HEALTH PROBLEMS.
THAT IS WHY WE CHOOSE BULGARIA.
AND IT WAS A HARD TRIP.
MY CITY WAS LOCATED IN THE NORTH EASTERN PART OF UKRAINE AND IT TOOK US ONE WEEK, ALMOST, TO GET FROM EASTERN BORDER TO THE WESTERN BORDER OF UKRAINE, THE BORDER WITH ROMANIA.
AND OUR CAR BROKE DOWN.
IT WAS REALLY A LONG, STRESSFUL TRIP, THAT I WON'T FORGET.
AND.

SO WHEN WE TALKED EARLIER TODAY, IF I AM CORRECT, YOU SAID TO ME YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF FRIENDS WHO ARE COMPETITIVE CHESS PLAYERS.

FIRST COUPLE EVERY MONTHS I SPENT IN MY UKRAINIAN FRIEND'S HOUSE IN WAKEFIELD.
AND THEN WELL, THINGS CHANGED SO I RECEIVED A JOB OFFER AND THEN I MOVED TO LOWELL.
SO NOW I STAY IN LOWELL.

THIS STORY HIGHLIGHTS, IT SEEMS TO ME JUST FROM OUTSIDE THE WORLD THAT YOU OPERATE IN, THAT THERE ARE A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT ACTORS THAT CAN PLAY A ROLE DEPENDING ON THE PARTICULAR SITUATION, DEPENDING ON THE PROGRAMS THAT ARE IN PLAY.
THERE IS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, STATE GOVERNMENT, ORGANIZES LIKE YOURS AND THE ONE THAT OLEKSANDRA NOW WORKS FOR.
AND THEN THERE ARE INDIVIDUALS WHO COULD-- BENEFACTORS, MEN AND WOMEN WHO DECIDE TO TAKE ON THIS RESPONSIBILITY.
HOW IS THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION'S NEW PROPOSAL GOING TO SHIFT THE BALANCE BETWEEN THOSE VARIOUS PARTIES THAT EXITED BEFORE?
>> YEAH, YOU'RE RIGHT.
THERE ARE NUMEROUS PEOPLE INVOLVED IN RESETTLING PEOPLE AND BRINGING PEOPLE TO THE U.S., EVEN WHEN IT WAS TRADITIONAL RESETTLEMENT PROGRAM.
SO TRADITIONALLY, A U.S.-BASED RESETTLEMENT AGENCY WOULD BRING PEOPLE FROM ABROAD, FROM A COUNTRY OVER.
THEY WOULD SPONSOR THEM IN THE WAY THAT THEY HAVE TYPICALLY DONE IT AND BRING THEM OVER THROUGH A SETTLEMENTMENT PROMISE, THE RESETMENT PROGRAM, THAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE THE RESETTLEMENT PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN THE U.S. AND IT HASN'T CHANGED VERY MUCH UNTIL RECENTLY THERE HAD BEEN SOME COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMS WHICH ARE AFFILIATED WITH RESETMENT AGENCIES BUT WERE NOT OPERATING SEPARATELY.
SO IN THE LAST YEAR OR SO WITH THE START OF THE EVACUATION OF AFGHANS, DURING THAT CRISIS THERE REALLY LAUNCHED A LOT OF COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMS THAT WORK THROUGH A COMMUNITY LEAD SPONSORSHIP WHICH WERE OPERATING SORT OF SEPARATELY FROM THE TRADITIONAL RESETTLEMENT AGENCIES, UNDER UMBRELLA NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
AND THEN THERE IS ALSO COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMS WHICH ARE BEING LEAD THROUGH RESETTLEMENT AGENCIES JUST TO MAKE IT MORE CONFUSING.
AND THEN LAUNCHED THE SPONSOR CIRCLES AND THE UNITE FOR UKRAINE PROCESS WHICH ARE INDIVIDUALS THAT CAN BRING FOLKS OVER WITH THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT.
THROUGH THE SAME PROCESS AS PEOPLE COME OVER THROUGH SETTLEMENT AGENCIES BUT BEING SUPPORTED INDIVIDUALLY.
>> SO I HAVE TO ASK YOU ABOUT THE UPSIDES AND DOWN SIESD OF WHAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT WANTS TO DO HERE.
BECAUSE AS OLEKSANDRA'S STORY INDICATES, ON ONE HAND IT IS WONDERFUL THAT YOU FOUND A SPONSOR WILLING TO DO THIS.
YOU HAVE NOW BEEN ABLE TO MAKE A BRAND NEW LIFE FOR YOU AND YOUR SOFNLT YOU ARE NOW WORKING, HELPING PEOPLE IN A SIMILAR SITUATION TO WHERE YOU WERE WHEN YOU CAME TO THE COUNTRY.
NOT VERY LONG AGO AT ALL.

AND WELL, I WAS GOING RAMBLE ON ABOUT OTHER THINGS BUT I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE MINE USES RATHER THAN PLUSES BUT ARE THERE UPSIDES AND DOWNSIDES TO THIS APPROACH.

ME LOOKING AT THE PROGRAM THAT HAS SORT OF EXISTED THE SAME FOR A LONG TIME.
BUT THERE IS A REASON THERE IS IS RESETTLEMENT PROVIDERS, RIGHT.
SO INE HAS BEEN OPERATING FOR OVER A CENTURY, WE HAVE DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE COMPLICATED PROCESS IT TAKES TO BRING SOMEONE OVER.
THE APPLYING FOR BENEFITS, STATE AND FEDERAL AS YOU MENTIONED.
AND IT CAN BE LONG.
WE ARE USED TO SERVING PEOPLE UP TO FIVE YEARS.
SO I HOPE AS THEY LAUNCH THIS PROGRAM, THE SPONSOR GROUPS THEMSELVES UNDERSTAND KIND OF THE COMPLICATIONS AND WHAT IT TAKES TO HELP SOMEBODY GET ON THEIR FEET.

AND LAST NIGHT I RAISED IT WITH MY OWN CLASS TEACHING POPULISM AND HALF THE STUDENTS HAVEN'T HEARD OF IT.
AND THE OTHER HALF HAD HEARD OF IT.
BUT WHAT REALLY STRUCK ME ABOUT IT WAS THAT STUDENTS WERE REALLY INTERESTED IN IT.
AND REALLY INTERESTED IN WHAT I HAD TO SAY ABOUT IT.
AS IN MANY USE THE TOOL, THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED IT.
THEY SAW THE TEXT IT GENERATED BUT THEY WERE LIKE WELL, WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS, IS THIS GOOD, IS THIS BAD, OR WHATEVER.
I PUT IN A MID TERM QUESTION I USED LAST YEAR, A TERRIBLE QUESTION, THEY GAVE A VERY GOOD ANSWER TO IT.
AND SO I TAUGHT THAT ANSWER WITH STUDENTS AND SAID HERE IS WHY THIS IS A GOOD ANSWER.
BUT ALSO HERE IS WHY THIS IS A BAD ANSWER.
AND I ASKED THEM WHAT THEY WOULD GIVE AND THAT LEAD TO AN EXCELLENT DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR AS AN ESSAY.
THERE WERE KEY THINGS IT LEFT, THERE WAS NO REFERENCE, NO EXAMPLES, ALL THE MAIN THEMES THAT I HAD TALKED ABOUT.
SO I SAID WELL, IT FAILED BECAUSE THERE IS NO REFERENCING.
SO IT IS PLAGIARISM BUT THERE WAS NO ARGUMENTATION THERE SO BUT THE STUDENTS HAD GIVEN IT AN A BECAUSE THEY WERE BLINDED BY HOW WELL IT WAS WRITTEN.
IT LEAD TO A GREAT CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT EXACTLY I'M LOOKING FOR.
SO THE FACULTY I CONSULT WITH AND TALKING TO ABOUT IF IS THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO USE T AND LIKE GIVE THEM THE ANSWERS AND SAY HERE IS WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT IT, HERE IS WHAT IS BAD ABOUT IT AND THE STUDENTS ARE EXCITED TO USE IT AS A STUDY AID TO GET A GOOD START, AS A SUMMARY TOOL.
BECAUSE A LOT ARE-- ABOUT GOOGLE AND USING GOGGLE SEARCH FOR THINGS HAS BECOME PRETTY COMFORTABLE RIGHT NOW AND IT IS CLUNGY AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT.
THEY ARE SEEING THIS AS ANOTHER TOOL IN THE TOOLBOX AND LOOKING TO FACULTY AND LOOKING TO TEACHERS TO SAY HOW CAN I USE THIS.
HOW CAN THIS HELP MY LEARNING.
HOW CAN THIS HELP ME LEARN MORE FOR YOUR COURSE.

INSTEAD OF A MID-TERM OR FINAL AND WRITE AN ESSAY AND THAT IS IT, ST DONE WITH, YOU GET THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY ABOUT WHAT KIND OF POTENTIAL IS THERE TO TELL THE STUDENTS TO BE CREATIVE, TO ENGAGE IN AMAZING WORK WITH ALL THESE WONDERFUL TOOLS THAT WE HAVE.
BUT THAT VL HARD TO DO.

BUT THE MORE SOPHISTICATED THE QUESTION, THE HARDER IT IS FOR THEM TO ANSWER IT.
THE OTHER THING THAT I HEARD IS THE LESS, AND I WILL JUST ADD ONE OTHER POINT, WHICH IS I HEARD SOME TEACHERS TALK ABOUT THE IDEA THAT PROFESSORS TALK ABOUT THE IDEA THAT YOU KNOW, RATHER THAN-- SORT OF, RATHER THAN JUST LIKE DENY IT, AND FIGHT IT, YOU KNOW, AK TECHNOLOGY.
IT'S THERE.
WHY DON'T YOU USE IT.

THAT IS EXAMPLES OF WHAT WE HEAR ABOUT CRITICAL THINKING.
