Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- We're spending time with Jared Bowen this morning, and not only talking about Amanda Gorman, but what's happening in Salem where the Peabody Essex Museum is taking a look at the women who revolutionized fashion, Jared.
- That's a really strange thing, if you think about it, for most of fashion history, it's actually men who've been the major designers of women's clothing, deciding what they wear and how they might wear it.
So, Made It, this new exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum on view through March 14th takes us through 250 years of women's fashion.
We see the whole arc of when women started to take fashion into their own realm, and push back, and say I think we'll put ourselves in our own clothes, thank you very much.
And I spoke with Petra Slinkard who's a director of curatorial affairs, and she's a fashion and textiles curator there, about this long, slow process of revolutionizing fashion for themselves.
One big example, Coco Chanel, who was not at all happy about men like Dior in the 1950s essentially putting women back into tight-fitting dresses, maybe even corsets you would describe it.
