♪ ♪ Fade away ♪ ♪ Like Taurus moon in cloudy skies ♪ ♪ Taurus moon ♪ ♪ Still on my mind ♪ ♪ Taurus moon ♪ ♪ Still makes me smile ♪ (soft guitar music) Hello, everyone.
My name is Jasmine Janai.
That song was called "Taurus Moon."
I journal a lot and I was going through a devastating breakup, and I was talking about how the daytime was really easy because I could keep myself busy, but when the night came around was when I would really start to feel emotional.
And so I tried to journal to get through it.
And when I was journaling, when I was done with that entry, talking about all of that, I looked at my phone and it said that it was a Taurus moon.
The moon was in Taurus.
And so I just kind of timestamped it, and that's how that song came about.
And this next song is called "Nameless."
It's a little bit after my breakup.
I was going through my crazy rambunctious situation-ship phase.
I was just into these like two, three-week flings, and I really didn't want anything serious to come out of this 'cause my heart was still being broken and I was using people to escape how I was really feeling.
And so I think I actually met somebody.
We went on a couple dates, and I didn't want it to get too serious.
And then we went to the studio and I wrote this, and I never really saw them again after that.
That was, I love them because they brought this song into my life.
And I wrote this song called "Nameless."

I know.
And, but I grew up in Phoenix and I always did choirs.
I went to Russia with my children's choir growing up, and I played a lot of sports.
And then when I got to high school, I had a full-ride volleyball scholarship to Utah.
And when I was in Utah, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do.
I think I switched my major like three times.
And then on spring break I ended up going to Atlanta randomly and recording in a recording studio for the very first time.
And it was like this message from the heavens that just shot into me.
And I was like, "I have to pursue this."
And so I called my mom and my dad separately, and I told them both that I was not going back to school on my volleyball scholarship and that I was gonna move to Atlanta to pursue my art.
And I didn't know anybody in Atlanta.
So they were pretty worried for me.
But eight years later and things are finally starting to work out for me and my career.
So that's how I ended up here.
This next song is called "Curious."
And I wrote it when I was just in a really fun time in my life where I wanted to try everything and everyone.
And the song is called "Curious."
(soft, moody music) ♪ Floating in the backseat ♪ ♪ Bottles are bare ♪ ♪ We always end up here ♪ ♪ You never even ask me ♪ ♪ How much I care ♪ ♪ You just assume I mean what I say ♪ ♪ White lies but they treat you well ♪ ♪ You don't know me ♪ ♪ I'm not very well ♪ ♪ Smile while the moon's in my face ♪ ♪ Baby, don't ask 'cause I'll say ♪ ♪ I was just curious ♪ ♪ Hands on make me feel mysterious ♪ ♪ Didn't ever wanna give you up ♪ ♪ But I was just, I was curious ♪ ♪ I was curious ♪ ♪ Did you ever notice ♪ ♪ How I lied awake at night while you dreamed of me?

My mom growing up, she had a big art closet, and we weren't really allowed to watch TV.
She's a hippie.
And so anytime I said I was bored, she would say, "Do you wanna paint?
"Do you wanna make clay?
"Do you wanna play your guitar?
"Do you wanna play piano?
Do you wanna make jewelry?"
And so I think I grew up always making things and being creative.
So, it's not really any surprise to anyone who really knows me that this is the career path that I chose.
I find myself usually influenced to create based off of life experiences.
But there are a few times where I've heard a song from the '20s by Peggy Lee and that inspired me.
Or most recently I was in therapy and I was talking to my therapist, and she told me to paint a picture of the two sides of me that I struggle with, the light or the dark, or the part of me that likes to act out and the part of me that wants to just heal myself all the time.
And so I drew a picture and I stared at that picture for a long time and brought it to the studio and ended up making a couple of songs from that.
I think that the duality definitely does express itself in my music.
I feel like in all of my songs, later on I realize that I'm questioning something or I'm never quite certain or I'm on the fence or I'm going back and I'm going forth.
It definitely influences my life, which inevitably influences my music.
So this next song is called "C'est La Vie."
And it is about an affirmation to myself when I'm feeling low, because being an artist is incredibly hard and trying sometimes just to believe in yourself.
And I sometimes go back and forth with, "You can do it," and then, "What the heck are you doing?"
And I just go back and forth.
So when I'm in between these two places, I like to play this song to myself and it's like a reminder, some good words.

I catch myself being mean to myself sometimes almost and giving myself these unrealistic expectations.
And there's this small part of me that is always around, and she kind of tells me, she's like afraid.
So she tells me that maybe I can't do it, or what if I'm not cut out for this?
And I used to be really mean to myself and to that part of myself.
And I try to be kind to her, and I try to pour love into that part of myself.
And so when I wrote "C'est La Vie," it was kind of just another way for me to take care of her and to be kind to myself, because I don't like when people are mean to my friends or when people talk about people I love.
So I shouldn't talk about me that way either because I love myself, and so I have to be a little bit extra protective of myself sometimes.
When I make music, I feel like it's a way that I can get how I'm feeling out, because I've never been good at really expressing exactly how I feel.
I feel like things get lost, or I'll think it's one thing how I feel, but then I'm like, it's another.
And I think when I write these songs, so first of all, all of these songs that I write that you're hearing come from my journal entries, first of all, and so I write these journal entries, and then I can make songs from them, which is a way for me to finally say what I feel without actually having to say what I feel.
And I feel like it's out there in the world so I never have to really say it again, if that makes sense.
I think that in this new age of social media and everyone's attention span is getting shorter and shorter, that some artists may feel the need to have like a wow factor or just say something that is crazy or a little bit left field or out of pocket, just to kind of get everybody's attention.
But you know, I just say people can make what they wanna make.
But I try to come from a authentic place and a genuine place, because I am going to make music that lasts for a long time.
I want your kids' kids' kids to play my record while they're cleaning.
All these songs from my project that's coming out, I want it to be around for a while.
So, not to say that that takes away from anybody who does quick, catchy things, but that's just not where I wanna go.
This next song is called "Good Girls."

Like one drink, one drink and some oysters.
And then, all of a sudden it's Monday, and the sun's coming up and we had been up for days, what felt like days.
And so this song was just about having a little bit too much fun with my girlfriends.
"Quality Time" is just such a feel-good record.
I wrote it because I am a earth sign.
I'm a Taurus queen, and "Quality Time" is one of my favorite love languages because time is the only thing that you cannot get back.
So, when you give it to people, especially when I give it to you, it means a lot, because we could all be doing literally anything else.
