My name is Carlyle Griffin.
I'm very excited to be with you all here in Muscle Shoals today in from Nashville.
(gentle guitar music) That last song I wrote with a friend of mine by the name of Meg McCree, who I also wrote this next song with.
And this experience was a different one for me when it came to songwriting.
I walked into our session that day, and I had a chorus kind of already written out, but I didn't know what to do with it.
I didn't know what the story was yet.
So I brought it into Meg, and we got to talking a little bit, and she was telling me about an exercise that Bob Dylan used to use where he would take newspaper articles, magazine articles.
He'd comb through them and kind of highlight names, places, phrases, anything that spoke to him, and he would use that to sort of craft his stories.
And so that's what we did.
She had some old "New Yorker" magazines laying around the house, and we cracked into those and started finding some inspiration, and that's how we built the verses of this song, so hope you enjoy it.
This one's called "Question Mark."

This is another one I wrote with my friend Meg, and this one was a fun one to take into the studio 'cause I played it very often acoustically in songwriters' rounds up in Nashville for a while, but in my head, I heard a lot of different things that this song could become.

How'd you get from Nashville to FAME?
So like I mentioned earlier, I met Jay through my friend Matt at the Greasy Chicken Review, and he and I got to talking a little bit that night, and I had never been down here.
I was aware of Muscle Shoals 'cause I grew up listening to a lot of Muscle Shoals artists, a lot of Aretha Franklin, a lot of Wilson Pickett, and Clarence Carter, and the Allman Brothers, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and all that stuff.
So I was familiar with it, and I don't know, in my brain, it seemed like this very large and mythical place, you know, where all of my heroes came.
And so he invited me down to write, and I was so excited and got down here, and I just immediately kind of felt like I was home.
It was a very odd sensation.
But I think this area reminds me a lot of home, and that might be partially why, and also just because immediately out of the gate, as soon as I started playing music here and meeting people here, like, they were connecting with what I was doing.
So a little while ago now, but it was a fun one to write and a fun one to record, and I don't get to play it very often, so I'm gonna take advantage of playing it right now.
