Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell buried beneath President Biden's re-election announcement Tuesday were any White House dreams for governor Murphy and U.S senator Cory Booker the two top Democrats endorsed the president just minutes after he launched his campaign video touting Biden's track record and successes but both Murphy and Booker were considered potential 2024 presidential candidates that's if Biden didn't run again Governor Murphy is already confirmed to make two trips to the Capitol this week among them a fundraising event with top donors for President Biden Murphy's Oval Office plans are sidelined for now so what does he do next I'm joined by Bergen Record columnist Charlie Style so Charlie you write that Murphy is having to surrender to reality here is this really the end of any Oval Office hopes for him at least right now I think for now but uh permanently no I mean a65 and we have an octogenarian running for president as an likely nominee for the Democratic party we have a Republican former president who's only four years behind him who is in the pole position to become the Republican nominee and this is the Revenge of the ulcers and you know if these guys can uh you know build that kind of power and or have that kind of position in their uh you know their golden age I mean um then you know that that extends The Horizon for anybody uh office seek or anybody who's got Ambitions yeah I mean that's a good point but where does he go from here because as you mentioned and we've talked about numerous times I mean Murphy's been in Israel he's certainly got his role within the Democratic Governors Association he's been out there looking very presidential um making deals and and statements um you know about National topics Jabs that uh Governor Ron DeSantis so where does he go from here I don't know but I think he's putting himself into the uh the orbit of relevance in the in the second term a possible second term Biden Administration and that can mean any kind of uh whole range of positions uh and roles um and maybe another ambassadorship you know I it's really hard to say but at least by raising money and raising his profile at the same time I think Bill Murphy at least puts himself you know in the starting lineup what about for our other uh Jersey guys Chris Christie I'm thinking Cory Booker is there some scenario where they wait in the wings or at least for Booker um because as you mentioned uh Joe Biden is not getting younger during this presidency right I think Cory Booker is still a relatively young guy he has still has a a big future ahead of him um Chris Christie less so and you know you could argue that Chris Christie uh his moment passed in 2012 that was his best shot um and again I think if I was looking at it from the perspective of Chris the things that are so tumultuous the old rules of presidential uh campaigning and preparing to be a candidate have been thrown out the window I can't let you go without at least mentioning the line that you wrote in your column about uh Governor Murphy's makeover his hair stylist perhaps the one to lose the most here or do you expect to see him tone it down a little bit uh no um from I was told that actually his hair stylist told him to just grow out his hair and not do anything with it so the hair stylist apparently had very little to do with uh this new transformation transformed Phil Murphy's all right Charlie Stile thank you so much Charlie you're more than welcome [Music]
