Born in Boston, John Singleton Copley exhibited an aptitude for painting from an early age, painting future revolutionaries like Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Joseph Warren.
Copley's status was elevated in the late 1760s, providing him ample work and entering him into the elites social circles.
In 1769, he married Susanna Clark, the daughter of one of Boston's richest merchants.
As tensions rose between the patriots, Copley tried to remain neutral, but his commissions began to decrease.
With the Boston Tea Party resulting in the bankruptcy of his father-in-law, Copley found himself in an uncomfortable position and traveled to London where he would remain.
There he would paint for British aristocrats and royalty, eventually creating "Watson and the Shark," as well as "The Death of the Earl of Chatham."
