Some of you have been to New York to see me on Broadway.
Which for those of you that have taken the trip, I really appreciate it.

It's the hardest I've ever worked in my life.
But when you have material that you connect with so deeply, doing 300-plus shows and two shows on Wednesdays and Saturdays, it's an absolute joy.
And you find things in the music the more that you sing it.
Especially when you sing from the work of Stephen Sondheim, who to me is one of the great composers that we have ever had in musical theater.
[ Applause ] So I'm gonna do a little medley of two of my favorite songs by Stephen Sondheim.
The first one is from "Into the Woods," and it is a song that certainly in my country's political climate, is a message that we could definitely sing over and over again.
And the second song is one that I did not sing in "Sweeney Todd."
It was sung by the character Tobias.
It is the only song in the show not about murdering and eating people.
So it's very sweet -- a very sweet song.

So, I did a song for the American Film Institute, the AFI, for Francis Ford Coppola.
He asked me to sing "The Godfather" theme for his inauguration of his Lifetime Achievement Award at the AFI, which was like -- I was very nervous, because, like, you know, when Francis Ford Coppola asks you to sing for something, you know that you better get it right.
So I learned it in Italian, and, then, I found out like, "Oh, no, no, no, no, no.

I'm going, "Okay."

And my answer to that is that I actually love singing them now, more than I ever did when I was a kid, because I was getting these really, really lofty songs of love and loss and all these things that as a 17-year-old I had not been through yet.

And, you know, we were thinking about love.
I am so fortunate that I have the most incredible partner.
She's in Los Angeles.
And we always, like -- When life throws you crazy things, as it often does, our thing that we would always say to each other is like, "Well, yeah.
But, babe, we have to be the constant.
We are the constant in all this, while everything is just going haywire around us."
And so when I told Benj and Justin that that's kind of like what we call ourselves, is the constant, they're like, "That's really good.
And let's, like -- let's draw on that."
And so we kind of, like, developed this song that is really about that to me.
That is something that it is about.
It could be about your parents.
It could be about a pet.
It could be about a teacher.
Whatever that is -- and certainly in the world that we are in, I need to hold on to those anchors in my life more than ever before.

You're my constant.
[ Cheers and applause ] Oh, my goodness.
This song -- I heard this song in the back of a taxicab in Dublin, Ireland, while I was promoting my first album.
And I was in the back of a cab, and I'd split a few G's that night.
[ Chuckles ] And I was feeling it, and I was kind of, like, dozing off in the back of the cab.
And all of a sudden, this song comes on the radio, and I'm like, "This is the most beautiful song that I've ever heard in my life."
And, then, I was there.
I was at my hotel.
Life goes on.
We came back to L.A., and I started working on my second album, "Closer," with David Foster.
And we were working on something else, and, then, somebody came in the studio and said, "Hey.
This song is out of Ireland, and I think Josh would really sing it quite beautifully.
What do you think?"
And I said, "Hey, that's my -- That's my drunken taxicab song.
Yes.
Absolutely, yes."
So, I don't know what we were singing.
We totally put it aside, and we sang this song.
And to be honest, we didn't know this was a hit song.
It's very, like, beautiful, but not the kind of song you would normally hear on the radio.
And so when I recorded it, I thought, "Oh, this rocks, but I don't think -- Maybe nobody will hear it."
So, you know, to be able to go around the world and have a song that is an anthem in every single country -- And I'm so proud of that fact.
It's so wonderful that people have that.
And, so, London, I know you are a vocal crowd.
You've been so wonderful tonight.
So if you will open your hymnals to page 6.
[ Laughter ] You want to sing along with me, it would be my privilege to do so with you.
This is called "You Raise Me up."
You guys are amazing.
Thank you so much again.

Oh, man.
Union Chapel.
You're gonna give me a big head here.
Come on.
I never lose sight of what a privilege it is to do this for a living.
You know, there is a lot of division in the world right now, certainly a lot of division in my country.
And to be in a profession where I can, you know, literally -- in this case quite literally congregate people under one roof and share something that everybody loves together, during a time when everything out there is just yelling at us how scared and angry we should be all the time at each other, to be able to sing songs that I think reflect that, also, certainly keeps me sane during crazy times such as these.
And so this is a song that I sing it -- I sing it, because, like, I need to hear it over and over again.
Another one of my favorite composers is Paul Simon.
He's somebody that just has always resonated with me, one of the great lyricists that we've had.
And this song I think to me, like, represents you know, the beauty of our similarities and the beauty of our differences and what it means to be there for people and to share something together.
Be a bridge -- Be a bridge as often as you possibly can.
And you never know what troubled water you are helping people over.
I know that's cheesy to say, but it is very, very true.

I'm gonna sing one more for you.
But this has been a total dream come true to come back here tonight and sing some songs that have meant a lot to me.
This song is probably one of my top, like, one or two favorite songs ever.
And, you know, I'm sometimes scared as a singer to tackle songs, because I think I'm the first person to say nobody needs to hear the 500,000th version of this song.
But, then, you hear, you know, what the arrangement does, and you hear the production, and you hear, "Oh, my gosh.
Okay.
I think I can sink my teeth into this."
So, this is a song that has meant a lot to me.
And it doesn't really need an introduction, but I wanted to close with this one, because I love you guys very much.
